EDITOR’S NOTE

T

here’s nothing quite like being a small business owner, for all the good and bad that comes with it. It’s intense, humbling and on the best days, rewarding. Most people don’t know this but I wear multiple hats here… I’m the Editor and I’m also 1 of 2 owners for The Fresno Flyer. So the growth and progression of this paper is very near and dear to my heart, as you could imagine. Starting anything from scratch takes absolute sheer will and determination, but to see it come to fruition and completely take on the shape of your original design? That’s something not even the most tenacious of personalities can accomplish on their own, not even for a Bulldog Alum like me. And that’s because nobody gets where they’re going without a little help from their friends (see what I did there?) or more importantly, without others believing in that vision. If they can’t see what you see, then why bother? We were lucky, so to speak, when we started. We at least had the bones of the operations to begin building on our idea. If you remember, The Nickel (in all its incarnations) was the staple for free newspaper media in these parts for a very long time. When they left, they didn’t just leave behind a habitable market for us, they left a wide open door and it was an opportunity we didn’t ignore. We dove in and rode the storm of entrepreneurship. Two, almost 3 years later, we can definitely see our trajectory of growth with some noticeable improvements that were hard earned. But we’re still a ways off from where we want to be. So many people balk at the mention of Fresno. As if it’s some lofty idealist notion that Fresno could be the next big California city. Everyone is still glorifying LA and San Francisco, so much so that they unknowingly look down their noses, even if just a hair, at the Central Valley. I get it, though. Those big cities made a name for themselves world wide through rebellion and glamor, then decided they were going to start setting trends just as fast and beautiful as New York. But everyone needs to remember, those cities weren’t born great… they were made great. And Fresno’s well on its way of doing the same. But no one is going to notice until we start talking about it, sharing

all the incredibly cool and amazing things that happen here. The Fresno Flyer exists for that purpose. We want to parade the underground music, the independent films, the gutsy artists, the innovative app developer, the unexpected philanthropists… everyone who’s doing kickass work right here in our neighborhoods, out in front of everyone’s faces. To make each issue of The Fresno Flyer a tangible representation of the Central Valley’s blossoming artistic face and impressive ingenuity. Yet, we can’t get there without a little more help. You, the reader, you’re the linchpin to our continued and growing success. I want the dialog between us to be open, at least as open as one can be between reader and Editor. Did you enjoy the article on that Goth Rock band from Hanford? Or what about the review about that restaurant in the Tower District? Are we covering some good stuff or did we miss something? Honestly, our paper doesn’t do its job unless you’re reading it, so tell me what you want to see. And it doesn’t matter if you’re in Madera or Kingsburg or Selma or Oakhurst… because you’re part of the Central Valley with a voice every bit as loud, and we’re totally invested in hearing it. (it’s not just about Fresno, don’t let the name fool you) Tell me what you want to see more of. If you have a lead on an idea, send it to me. Or if you have something you want to write, let me know. Even better, are you an artist or musician or organization and want to feature some work? Call me. Email me. It all works. Help me shape this paper into an accurate reflection of the real Central Valley we know is here. Where to send letters: The Fresno Flyer ATTN: Lisa Talley 560 E. lank canvas… unlimited potential or utterly terrifying in all the right ways. Or, perhaps it’s a resonant surge of both. It’s a quiet unsettling call for a challenge, one you either answer or you don’t. Nothing sends the blood racing through the veins of an artist quite like the promise of an empty canvas. The exhilaration of such a moment was enough to have Fresno artist, Tifferz, pursuing it full time. She dove in, took the plunge, left her career, and is now chasing down that dream like it’s the last bus out of town. Did that make you uncomfortable? For a second it did, admit it. The mere mention of leaving a career you’re good at to pursue something of the uncertain would make most people squirm in their seats. But that’s the point. Tifferz makes it her business to bring out the thing that sends you shifting awkwardly under your skin through her artwork. “For Tifferz, it is important to embrace uncomfortable thoughts and images for what they signal to our emotions. Things which we initially recoil have valuable, and often misunderstood, significance.” Stated in an excerpt from her website. She’s not going for shock value, it’s something a little more subtle than that. “It’s being too comfortable that makes me uneasy. I feel that pulling yourself out of your comfort zone is all about growing up and expanding your horizons… Everyday I sit at my canvas I’m uncomfortable. My head fills with thoughts of ‘Am I good enough?’ ‘Will my work sell?’ Can I really make this dream a reality?’ That’s my fuel, that’s what I thrive

off of. I love that everyday I am challenging myself to build the dream I want more than anything. To share my art with the world,” says Tifferz. Three years and counting, Tifferz is successfully making her dream a reality. Things are more of an adventure these days and she finds inspiration everywhere she goes, absorbing the potential in everything she sees. “I think, sometimes, I drive my boyfriend crazy when I tell him all of the different ideas I have going on my head at one time. When I’m out and about… I stop and take pictures. I sketch them in my sketchbook or save the image for further inspiration down the road. Music is also a big inspiration… I usually paint to Louis Armstrong,” shares Tifferz. The New Orleans spirit is present in Tifferz’s work, but not entirely because she’s listening to Satchmo while in the zone. It isn’t necessarily pulsating in the actual subject matter of her work, it’s the overall presentation of how the piece was assembled. Tifferz’s art is typically found with loud and bold colors that waltz over the canvas with zero apologies. “When you walk down the streets of the French Quarter, you can see history all over the place and at the same time, you can feel so much life running through its veins… I feel like my work reflects my time in the city,” offers Tifferz. Currently, Tifferz is working on a set of new pieces and as a result, taking a break from shows. She’s been very fortunate and has actually run out of her original artwork for viewing. Now is the time to go back and hit the blank canvases running, and she’ll be doing it in a different way this time. “I’ve started to work on larger, more elaborate pieces. I’ve recently started doing collage pieces and I love it! … It challenges me to think outside the box and not be too focused on one area of the painting,” Tifferz states. Of course, previous works are still available to view online by visiting her website www.TifferzArt.com, but there’s no timeline yet in when her new series will be ready for showing. In the meantime, fans of her work may actually commission Tifferz for custom, personalized pieces of art. Just visit her website and start the conversation, she’s happy to take on new

challenges as clients are always helping her stretch the artistic muscle and move in directions she never quite anticipated. “I’ve had some clients this year test my artistic limits and it was great. I’m learning what I am capable of through my commission work. For instance, up until this year I had never done figure work… I didn’t realize that I’d like painting the human form, and now I’m loving it,” says Tifferz. Stay connected with Tifferz’s artistic journey by following her work on Facebook under ‘Tifferz’ for her artist page and ‘Tiffany Salter’ for her personal page, on Instagram @tifferz_art and on her website, www.TifferzArt.com.

Christmas Gift Giving

T

By Mary Bell

he holiday season is fast approaching. Some people have already made their lists and checked them twice. Other people are wondering why they were so naught instead of nice all year long. Just how many uses for “coal found in stockings” can you find on pinterest? For most people, the Christmas shopping list can be boiled down into several categories – 1) the special people in my life that I sincerely want to give a dynamic gift, 2) the people I want to give a gift but have no clue what to give them, 3) and those who are required gifts that you would rather just not do at all. If you look at it another way, the gift ideas can fall into several categories as well. First, the perfect gift springs to mind and you don’t even care what it costs. It’s just that perfect for that special someone in your life. Second, when you come up with the perfect idea for someone, but it is way outside your budget. Third, the recycled gifts that will do in a pinch. Admit it. You’ve recycled a gift you have received. Just be careful to not recycle it to the person who gave it to you last year. That can be really embarrassing. And then there is all the rest of the people on your list. Just what do you do with them? You guessed it – the evereasy Gift Certificate. The Gift Certificate is like ranch dressing on the side – it pretty much goes with everything. At Permission, you can find something for everyone on your list. If

you want to gently suggest solutions for health issues to that struggling relative, CranioSacral Therapy is just the ticket. For the healthy person who wants to stay that way, maybe Raindrop Technique will excite them (in addition to promoting and enhancing good health.) Swedish massage is the answer for the stressed out and tense people on your list who you wish would just chill out. There are enough different essential oils – with different scents and applications – to be that unique and coveted gift for women, men, young, old, and animals alike. And of course, a Permission Gift Certificate allows everyone on your list to enjoy any service or essential oil that they like. The holiday season is no time to be stressed and harried. Make a choice this year to conquer your shopping list in the least anxious way possible. I can help you take the “sh…..” out of your shopping. That just leaves “opping” – as in options! See. This is getting easy already. Call me at 559-400-1352 to discuss your options. While we are checking off the people on your list, I will remind you to add yourself and make sure that you take good care of yourself as well. Don’t leave your holiday to chance. Pamper yourself, too – just in case your gifts end up in the recycle pile. You can also find out more about the work I do and how it can help you by visiting my website at www. PermissionCST.com

Fun Facts Christmas Edition Pt. I

1. The origins of Christmas can be traced back to ancient pagan celebrations such as Deus Sol Invictus (observed Dec 25), the Kalends ( Jan 1-5), and Saturnalia (Dec 17-23). The Christian Church disapproved of these festivals and co-opted the holidays by declaring Dec 25 as Jesus’ birthday. 2. The tradition of tinsel, which was invented in Germany in 1610, is based on a legend about spiders whose web turned into silver when they were spun in a Christmas tree. 3. It takes Christmas trees around 15 years to grow to 6-8 feet. There are approximately 30-35 million Christmas trees grown annually. 4. Most of Santa’s reindeer have male-sounding names, such as Blitzen, Comet, and Cupid. However, male reindeers shed their antlers around Christmas, so the reindeer pulling Santa’s sleigh are likely not male, but female or castrated.

ersian cuisine, a favored mistress of my home life. Containing strong flavors of garlic, turmeric, cardamon, and cloves, all playing together like a ballet on your tongue. It’s a delicious melody that is easy to fall in love with over and over again. However, finding a place in Fresno where Persian dishes are prepared as well as the recipes you’ve grown up with has proven to be challenging, but not entirely impossible. Phoenician Garden is that rare find that proved the impossible was possible. It’s a restaurant where one can sit back and enjoy a casual lunch or dinner. Take out is available in case you’d rather take your special order home. It’s a first class ticket escape from the grind of everyday food, minus the passport, complete with a wait staff that is equipped with excellent service and a kind disposition. Inside, the restaurant is spacious, clean, and the interior design suits the name ‘Phoenician Garden’ quite appropriately. There are booths available, along with

tables which are comfortable and able to accommodate small parties of 2, upwards to medium sized parties of 6. I arrived on a Saturday night and much to my surprise there was more than enough seating available leading me to believe that reservations aren’t necessary on a regular basis. I was immediately seated by the host and asked for my drink order, which arrived a minuted later. My order of lentil soup and kibbeh (seasoned meat fried in a shell of wheat grain) was the starter. Lamb shank was what I ordered as my entree. The lentil soup arrived within a few short minutes and was, to put it bluntly, magnificent. The soup was hot and perfectly seasoned with salt and lemon. A few bits of carrots were added for some sweetness, along with a touch of minced parsley… these small touches helped the appetizer sing. The kibbeh was piping hot, crispy on the outside and lightly seasoned on the inside. It also contained pine nuts on the inside which I thought were excellent. When the lamb shank arrived it looked simply stunning, and in fact all the plates I could see leaving the kitchen appeared just as impressive as what I had in front of me. The lamb was fork-tender and perfectly seasoned with salt, allspice, cumin, cloves, and garlic. The vegetable accompaniment that stewed alongside the lamb was saturated with all the same juices and spices, which was utterly sublime. The rice was seasoned with turmeric and cooked exceptionally well. The remaining vegetables of squash and carrots were a little under cooked leaving them a little too crisp for my taste, however they were seasoned and coated well with olive oil. In the end, it was a wonderful meal thoroughly enjoyed by what I am sure is one of many happy customers. The dish, the environment, the service… like I said, a terrific escape from the daily grind, one I hope you’re able to enjoy yourself. Fresno Collect-A-Con

A

signed poster of Spiderman by Stan Lee. A 1984 Topps Dan Marino rookie card. If you’re a collector, you know what these are potentially worth.. either monetary or personally. Finds like these are far and few between, but occur in the most unlikely of places. You’ll never know where they’re going to pop up, which is why a collector is always hunting. Just ask the man behind Collect-ACon, Dave Fly. Before Collect-A-Con, Fly had been a show planner for Frank & Son Collectible Show. One year, a man showed up with a van full of vintage Star Wars figurines, hundreds of unopened Boba Fett ships in fact. In case you’re wondering what something like that could be worth, a single unopened box goes for (at the time) $300 - $500. Now they’re worth upwards to $1,000. The guy in the van was asking $700 for the whole lot. Without batting an eyelash, Fly knew he had a rare opportunity and pooled his own $300 with another $300 he borrowed from his neighbor and walked away with a van load full of rare items for a steal! A successful deal like that earned him the name Captain Fly by his co-workers, which eventually evolved into Jedi Fly, the name he goes by today. Nowadays, Fly works on bringing these sorts of potential opportunities together by organizing his own collectible show, CollectA-Con. It’s a place where vendors, collectors and fans can get together to trade, sell, buy and share a mutual enthusiasm of the comic world. On December 10th at the Piccadilly Inn, collector’s will have a chance and opportunity at finding that long coveted item during Fresno’s Collect-A-Con. From 9am 4pm the event will be boasting items such as comics, action figures and trading cards from vendors like Legends Comics & Games, Super Friends Comics & Collectibles, Bases Loaded and others from Los Banos, Bakersfield and more. Collect-A-Con typically occurs around 4 times a year, so you won’t have to wait another year to check it out if you miss it this time around. However, items and vendors change each go around so you can expect a different experience from Collect-A-Con to Collect-A-Con. Admission is only $2 at the door, but upon your arrival you’ll also be included in the raffle occurring every hour. The vendors will be doling out giveaways from posters to comic books and more. So you’ll want to be sure to stick around even if you don’t hear your name on the first draw. But get there early, event coordinators say the last 8-9 shows were sold out.
