Let’s Go Sugarless By Anglia M. Walpool

Sure, going sugarless sounds a bit harsh to most people, it may even sound a little repulsive around this time of the year. However, for the last six months, I’ve tried to reduce the amount of processed sugar in my family’s diet. But more specifically, I’ve focused on reducing the sugar in my own diet for better health. I realized that if I were going to expect changes from my family, it would be better if I were to look at myself first. Sadly, I still eat two pieces of red licorice once a week, but I’m working towards a healthier me, via baby steps and I am certainly a lot more mindful when I indulge in bad habits. In America there are over 28 million people suffering from diabetes. Diabetes is diagnosed when your blood sugar is too high which may result in numerous health problems. Type 2 diabetes is a degenerative disease that has increased in frequency as sugar consumption has increased. This form of diabetes accounts for 98% of all the diabetic cases in America today, and is considered to be entirely diet-related. Although it’s unclear why, people of certain races including Hispanics, African-

Americans, American Indians and AsianAmericans — are at higher risk. The risk for diabetes also increases with age. This may be because people tend to exercise less, losing muscle mass and gaining weight as we get older In some cases type 2 diabetes can be reversed through healthy eating, exercising and monitoring your sugar intake, but it also depends on your genes. The easiest way to go sugarless is to stop adding the sweet stuff in your food and drinks. Many people are not even aware of how many teaspoons or tablespoons of sugar they add into that bowl of oatmeal, hot cereals or sliced fruit, not to mention those alcoholic beverages, sodas, Kool-aid and sugary energy drinks. “The average American consumes about 19.5 teaspoons of sugar per day,” according to SugarScience.org. We are consuming way too much, almost 66 pounds of sugar per year. What’s even more disturbing is the human body is not made to consume excessive amounts of sugar in our bloodstream. It also increases your uric acid levels, damages your liver, causes weight

EDITOR’S NOTE

I

t felt like just a ‘blink’ didn’t it? One minute you’re throwing a turkey in the oven hoping against all odds you don’t dry the poor thing out and the next minute you’re standing empty-handed with your brother on the phone talking about gifts going under the tree for the nephews. Shit! Or whatever expletive suites your pallet, comes thundering out of your mouth in the kind of perfect silence that goes unnoticed by people on the other end of a phone. Now what? I don’t have kids, so I’m not dealing with this dilemma as often as those who do, but I do have 2 nephews and a niece. Which gives me some flexibility to give gifts that come with a little bit of an edge to them, making them the kind of gifts that only cool aunts give. But in this day in age, the digital age, gift giving has come with one hell of a painful price tag. And especially when it comes to shopping for anyone under the age of 18. How do you give a present that either isn’t a game console, computer, or isn’t an attachment to a game console, or computer? It’s a tough question. These days, if you’re not giving a gift that fits into any of the aforementioned categories, you might as well consider that gift a

professional dust collector. Like most of you, I’m not one for gambling money on things a person may or may not enjoy, and I certainly won’t settle for anything ordinary or useful like socks or a sweater (they won’t appreciate things like that until they’re 21 and broke anyway), so I found myself stuck between a rock and a hard place of either sucking it up and getting something electronic, or nothing at all. Lucky for me, my brother is a genius. My nephews are at that age where the promise of magic in the drudgery of an ordinary day seems completely rational, and of course, possible. The cynical outlook of those moody teenage years haven’t hit yet, and all the world still feels like it’s about to unearth some hidden treasure map, or enchanted wardrobe. So naturally, my big brother saw an opportunity to introduce them to a game that kept us entertained for hours when we were their age. He taught them Magic The Gathering. The trading card game full goblins, ghouls, zombies, trolls, knights, elves, spells and a whole lot more. Perfect for a couple of imaginative kids who can

gain, obesity, elevated blood sugar and elevated triglycerides. Scientists aren’t sure specifically how sugar contributes to fatal heart problems, nevertheless it has been shown to increase blood pressure and levels of unhealthy cholesterol, in addition to heart disease or a stroke. Researchers are investigating the connection between sugar and cancer. The idea that sugar could directly fuel the growth of cancer cells have lead some people to avoid sugary treats and carbohydrate-containing foods. It even contributes to signs of aging, causing your skin to look and feel older than it is. While your body metabolizes sugar,

it initiates an inflammatory process that harms the skin. Sugar attaches itself to any protein in the body and produces harmful molecules called ‘advanced glycation end products’. These reduce the effectiveness of elastin and collagen, proteins in the skin that give us that youthful appearance. Dr. Aamer Khan, a cosmetic dermatologist and Co-Founder of Harley Street Skin Clinic established in 2004, said “There is no point in spending a lot of money on expensive skin creams if you are eating a diet high in sugar.” Going

handle a little healthy competition among friends or family. This works out perfectly for me because not only do I get yet another thing that I can share with my nephews, but I’m also incredibly and, fortunately, sentimental. Meaning, I have kept mine and my brother’s collection of cards in one place after all these years. As a matter of fact, had he not mentioned it, I probably would’ve forgotten that I had them stashed away somewhere safe. Thus, giving me the opportunity to gift these kids with something cool that doesn’t break the bank and will connect us with some shared history through a really awesome (albeit geeky) game. It’s challenging, fun, imaginative, engaging and keeps their eyes from staring at a screen for hours on end. It won’t replace their electronics, but it’ll give them options from running to them every single time they’re bored. And my niece? She’s too young for any of this. She’s getting a giant box of goodies from her grandma. Now, the point of all this was not to subtly promote some trading card game for you to get for those kids in your life, but to share an experience that sort of changed the game of gift-giving for me when it comes to non-adults. It’s hard not to think of iPads, smartphones, video

games, Xboxes, PlayStations, laptops, and other items that start in the realm of a couple hundred bucks as our only options. (I guess we can thank advertising for that) And it’s easy to forget about the things that kept us happy when we were kids that could still be completely relevant today, we just got to give it a chance. ‘Old’ is a mindset. You’re not old, you’re experienced. New isn’t always better and technology may be great, but it isn’t everything. If you’re fighting the holiday rush to the stores, be safe and don’t panic if you can’t find everything on that ‘Wish List’. Remember to enjoy your holiday, have fun, and most importantly, find time to relax.

Last Minute Gift Ideas

O

By Mary Bell

K, so it’s the last minute and you still need Christmas gifts. Don’t panic. There is still time, and there are still options. Well, you can panic if you want. But honestly, panic does not have as much purchasing power ais you would think. So take a deep breath and shake it off. Let’s talk about those options. You don’t want to be embarrassed when you open that beautiful gold necklace knowing that you bought that person a bottle of ranch dressing. And a side serving dish that you bought at the local discount store. Let’s not do that. Let’s talk options instead. Gift Certificates from Permission always work. With the variety of services offered, everyone on your list can find something that they will enjoy. From health options, like CranioSacral Therapy, to relaxation options, like Swedish Massage, your gifts will be the most coveted of all. Your gifts will say not only that you care, but that you want your friends and family to have something unique and special. I can pretty much guaranty that if you give gift certificates for CranioSacral Therapy, there will not be duplicate gifts exchanged in your family. If you are looking for exceptional and extraordinary, this is it. Maybe you need stocking stuffer ideas. No worries. Select an essential oil specific to each person on your list and put it in a spray bottle or bottle topped with a roller ball for easy application. Spray bottles and roller balls are perfect for purses, backpacks, briefcases, diaper

bags, and cars. Keep your favorite scent close at hand all day long. Since there are essential oils in both floral scents as well as woodsy aromas, you can find the perfect gift for everyone on your list. Personalized gift baskets always make thoughtful gifts. Choose your own theme – spa, cooking, baking, skin care, or even chocolate – and your own price range. I’ll do the rest for you. How simple is that!Last minute gift ideas at Permission can be personalized for men, women, teens, adults, grandparents, and even animals. Forget about wrapping a dog bone again this year (like you have every year in the past) for the furry members of the family. There are several oil blends made explicitly for the four-legged family friends. And a happy pet makes for a happy owner. Make two people on your shopping list happy with one gift. Another great stocking stuffer gift is skin care products for all ages. Skin care infused with essential oils help teens deal with acne. They can also address adult-onset acne. People of all ages like to look good. Taking good care of your skin accomplishes this for all ages. Whether you need gifts for people who want to look younger or younger people who want to maintain their youth as long as possible, essential oils are the answer. The bottom line is don’t worry. Even though you waited until the last minute to shop, there are still options – good options for everyone on your list. Just give me a call at 559-400-1352 and leave your shopping stress in the trash!

Going Sugarless continued from pg.3

sugarless means, not only getting rid of table sugar, but brown sugar, liquid sugar, corn syrup and powdered sugar as well. You may also want to eliminate processed carbohydrates from your kitchen as well as refined carbohydrates like cakes, biscuits, white bread, white pasta, and white rice all quickly convert into sugar in the body. Keeping these common products out of your home is a simple effective way to maintain a better balanced blood sugar level. Unstable blood sugar often leads to mood swings, fatigue, irritability, dizziness, sweating, headaches and sugary cravings. Dr Khan stated, “sugar should be avoided altogether.” The more natural the food the better your health will be. When you’re hungry, choose an apple in place of a candy bar, or an orange in place of a cookie. Always satisfy your sweet tooth naturally with fresh fruits or raw food desserts. One of my favorite fruit snacks is persimmons, they are about 70 calories, depending on the size. It is a very good source of fiber and not to mention, naturally sweet and delicious. Persimmons can be consumed fresh, dried, or cooked. You can also use them for raw food desserts and filling. Raw fruits provide vitamins, minerals, and fiber that other desserts made with flour and white sugar simply won’t give you. Desserts and treats don’t have to be sweet in addition to being high in calories, so start exploring nutritious foods while going sugarless. Let’s try spicing up our life by experimenting with herbs and spices, such as nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, honey, raw maple syrup and raw coconut. I made my first raw food, pecan pie this Sunday, I shall leave the recipe with you and hope you enjoy it. It was very satisfying without the sugar. I am not saying that you have to give up sugar right away completely, this is a life long journey. However, it would be in your best interest to modify your sugar consumption.

Dawning of a massacre by Jade Martinez

N

o, it’s not a slasher flick… and if you were hoping that it was, sincere apologies. Dawning of a Massacre is the name of a metal core band who’s rising up and out of the underbelly of our sister city of Visalia with a some time-tested fervor… And we think they deserve a few minutes of your time. From barreling low growls to pitched fry screams, from unrelenting energy to syncopated breaks, Dawning of a Massacre is shredding thunderous metal into the unsuspecting ears of listeners from all ends of the spectrum. “Our influences and personal styles combined, as a unit, have given enormous potential for listeners of almost any age and from virtually any scene to enjoy our sound,” says R.J. Vargas, vocalist for Dawning of a Massacre. The diversity in their music is a reflection of each member of the band, for they individually carry something different that contributes to the overall writing style of the group. Along with Vargas on the mic, Nick Gardner and Alex Serrato are on guitar, Jimmie Dunlap on bass, and George Longoria utilizing the drums, they each have “different and unique elements to bring to the table…to create [the] elaborate and engaging heavy music,” explains Vargas, that all comes together perfectly in Dawning of a Massacre’s sound and presence. Opening for nationals like The Devil Wears Prada and Mushroomhead, the crew has put in some serious dues, because accomplishments like these don’t happen over night. Since 2011, the band has been working hard to bring together the volume that not only makes for new fans, but keeps the loyal ones, well… loyal. Vargas expressed the excitement and heightened anticipation he feels radiating from the crowd, both before and during performances. Humbly, he stated, “We try to make our audience have an experience of emotions, and we feel that has

a greater impact on them than having only one type of song or [feeling] throughout the whole set”. The audience is everything. The fans are everything. Without their support or their voices shouting back in cadence with the music, no band would survive. Dawning of a Massacre has a clear understanding of how important their crowds are and they make sure to give them an experience worth remembering, whether you’re a long-time fan or just getting to know them and their sound. “We even try to write in a way that reaches out to people who don’t even like “metal” and this has proven to be one of our greatest strengths as a band. We can’t tell you how many times we’ve had people who were just at a show because of their friend or significant other, [and they’ve] come up to us to say that they “don’t even like this kind of music” but ended up enjoying our sound and performance anyway, essentially converting them to enjoy heavy music. … Even if people, who don’t enjoy this type of music, but can appreciate the level of musicianship and stage performance [we possess] is a win in our book,” says Vargas. Now that you’re all revved up and ready to check these guys out at their next show, you might be a little disappointed to hear that live shows are currently on hold. Don’t worry, it’s all for a good reason. You’ll be pleased to know that Dawning of a Massacre is working on the release of their much anticipated new E.P. and single titled ‘Anhedonia’. In the meantime, follow them on social media @DawningOfAMassacre on Facebook and @dawning_of_a_massacre on Instagram, to stay up to date on the E.P. release and upcoming shows. Jade enjoys the local artistic progression and is debuting her passion for written word to the public. Follow her on Facebook @jademartinez.

Shopping With Caution

T

by Johnnie Thomas

his time of year comes with a little added caution as we come to celebrate the Holidays. For most of us, that means shopping for our loved ones, often times carrying valuables to our cars, by ourselves at nighttime. As a two-time victim of theft, I wanted to share some safety tips for other senior citizens, as well as for the disabled. I hope this list of safety tips will help you as much as they help me. 1. When beggars ask you for spare change, tell them that you don’t carry cash. 2. Try to do all your shopping during daylight hours. 3. Be aware of your surroundings at all times, always be alert and be sure to survey both the inside and outside of any business. 4. Put your wallet and money away while still at the counter, before you walk towards the exit. 5. Check your bought items before exiting the store, not after. 6. Do not exit the store if you notice one or two suspicious individuals lingering around outside. 7. Be wary after picking up an order of pizza. When beggars ask for “a couple of slices” simply inform them that the pizza is for someone else.

10. Ignore anyone trying to sell you something at a bargain price.

11. Refuse strangers’ help with your bags.

All-Beef Meatballs 4 (3 oz.) Potatoes au Gratin 4 (4 oz.) Caramel Apple Tartlets Omaha Steaks Seasoning Packet (.33 oz.)

12. If you see unsavory characters lurking around the store before you go in, postpone your shopping or shop somewhere else. 13. Be sure to carry your cell phone and always make sure the battery is charged. You’re only as safe as you make yourself. Keep your eyes open, and if at all possible, never shop alone.
