EDITOR’S NOTE

T

here’s this lovely sentiment going around about this year and it’s something to the effect of “F@!K 2016”. For some unknown and frustrating reason, it was a year filled with death and profoundly shocking disappointment. Whether it was the loss of our famous pop-culture icons, the civil unrest from coast to coast, the disastrous events of the Dakota pipeline, or an entirely personal journey that left us feeling like hard worn warriors by the end of it, 2016 was certainly a year we won’t forget anytime soon. And now that 2017 is finally here we’re gearing up to move forward with a clean slate. It’s a fascinating culture the way we treat January 1st, as if each time around we shed our triumphs and failures like old skin in order to make way for the one we’ve always wanted, something bigger and better. And we’re absolutely sure it’s going to happen this year… whatever it may be. The determination is noteworthy, valiant even in the insistent will to not only improve but to succeed in those improvements. Which is why we chose articles for this issue that reflect some of the most common goals we’re usually after; losing weight, getting healthier, and saving money. Now, there won’t be any earth shattering revelations in these pages, but there may just be something that helps make your goals a little more sustaining than if you had pursued them all on your own. Because that’s the trick, isn’t it? It’s not making the initial change, but getting those changes to stick all the way through the year. Personally, I start every year claiming very proudly that I’m going to put away the ice cream and finally achieve that more streamlined look I’ve been ranting on about for the last 4 years. Out go the carbs, no bread, no pasta, no sweets and in come the salads. I set an alarm clock to remind myself when to get off my butt and hit the gym… and for about 2-3 months it’s a fantastic success. But then, my friends call to say they’re having a bbq/party/dinner for a birthday, anniversary, graduation, or just because the weather is warm enough to pull everyone out of the house. First, it’s just a dinner roll. Then, it’s a beer or 3 followed by the dreaded uncontrolled snacking at 2am. Have you tried pita chips with cream cheese and salsa?! It’s everything I could want in those ravenous hours. And then before I know it, school starts and

the holidays are right around the corner. It’s a vicious cycle many of us have a hard time breaking. So if you’re like me and will be pursuing an all-too-familiar goal for the umpteenth time, some of the advice in these pages won’t seem very awe inspiring, in fact, they may even sound redundant. But, if you’re like me, you’ll read them anyway in search for that one piece of information you’re missing that may help turn everything around. And, in all fairness, that could very well happen. Sometimes it just takes another perspective to help us figure out all the ways to make the progress we want. As you stare down the barrel of 2017, ready to take on the year like some wild untamed bull I have a little piece of advice. Whatever your goal, be it better health, finances or to change the world, just remember that everything takes time. Remember to have a little patience. I know as Americans we love our instant gratification, but it’s important to note that nothing long lasting happens over night. Each time you save a few dollars, make it through another workout or sit through a City Council Meeting you’re building the foundation of a change that will last. Oh, and never compare yourself to anyone else. Not ever. That’s an incredibly important bit to keep in the back of your mind at all times. We’re all different, and we all have our own challenges to overcome. All you can do is be a better version of yourself than you were yesterday. Never give up. Never say ‘Die’. And may your 2017 outshine the crap of 2016. ____ Let me know what you would like to see more or less of in our pages. Don’t be shy, we want to hear from you. 5 Easy Tactics For Making Your New Year’s Resolution to Save Money a Reality

By Lisa Talley

itness. A word that makes the general populace groan in dreaded anticipation. Even still, there’s no arguing the benefits of a well balanced body functioning at a healthy RPM. But where to start? Cardio? Weight and strength training? Both? Nick Bustamante, personal trainer of Brick House Fitness and MMA, is going share some insight to help make sure you start your training off on the right track. First and foremost, “Avoid crash dieting and overtraining,” says Nick. It’s common to build unrealistic diets and workout routines when you’re first starting out, or even if you’re coming back to the gym after a long absence. We tend to overestimate what our bodies can handle and push too hard right out of the gate, especially when we’re excited to get started on our fitness goals. The problem, Nick says, is that people burn themselves out after a short period of time and stop coming to the gym altogether. It’s important to start gradually. Build habits that are easy to maintain, yet also help you to reach your fitness goals, no matter how big or small. Don’t start with a sprint, but rather warm up and stretch your legs on a light jog before dashing towards a faraway finish line. “I recommend simply cutting out unhealthy eating habits [to start] and finding an exercise routine that is both fun and challenging. This will help you look forward to working out instead of dreading it,” he shares. Deciding where to get fit can also pose some interesting challenges. Even though gyms can appear quite similar to each other, it’s important to note that they’re not ‘one size fits all’ type of experiences. Nick suggests seeking out those gyms that offer free trial sessions/ classes before signing up. In fact, try as many as you can until you find the one that you enjoy the most. That way, it’ll keep you coming back for more. Once you’ve chosen a gym, the next question will be what sort of work out to tackle. This, according to Nick, is reliant on what your goals are. “If you are focused solely on what the number on the scale says, then

cardio should be your emphasis. But if you are looking to change your body fat percentage and lose body fat while building muscle then a balance of cardio, strength, and resistance training is the best solution,” says Nick. This advice also goes to both men and women. Gender is irrelevant when it comes to choosing a workout that aligns with any individual’s goals. However, without proper guidance, some imbalances may occur. “I often see men and women preferring to work different muscle groups. For example, many of my male clients like to work arms, chest, and shoulders, whereas my female clients like to work glute and legs,” offers Nick. In those situations, Nick pulls his clients out of their comfort zones and pushes them to work other areas of their body as well, in order to help create a wellrounded fitness. But weight lifting isn’t your only option. Combat sports like MMA, Muay Thai, and Jiu Jitsu can also help you reach your fitness goals in a more engaging and challenging way. And it isn’t just a healthy body you’ll get in return. Combat sports help build confidence and discipline. It’ll also help improve your balance, flexibility, speed, agility, physical/mental toughness, and of course, strength. These types of workouts can be very intense and will help you burn more calories than say, riding a stationary bike, says Nick. In the end, goals should be realistic. Success with your fitness comes when you find ways to keep it easy to manage and fun to do, and not only with your work outs, but also with your diet. “In my opinion, fad diets [like Paleo, Ketogenic, Intermittent Fasting etc.] when followed correctly, can give good results. However, most of them are extremely hard to maintain long-term and become a short-term weight loss solution. Many of these fad diets can actually keep athletes from reaching their peak performance,” says Nick. Finding what works for you is a process and it could take a little time to figure out what fits your particular style the best and will help you achieve your

goals for the long haul. However, Nick suggests seeking out a good trainer if you’re looking to reach your goals faster. Nothing keeps you from falling off the wagon quite like a personal coach invested in keeping you on track.

(BPT) - It’s almost that time of year again you prepare for the holidays and start thinking about what you want your New Year’s resolution to be. According to research from Nielsen, one quarter of Americans want to spend less and save more money in the New Year. If you’re one of these people, follow these five easy tips to stay on track financially in 2017.

Automate payments into your savings account.

Nick Bustamante is a professional MMA athlete who has proved himself in the cage for local promotors, including Bellator. Nick’s passion for fitness led him to become a certified personal trainer and coach. Shortly after, he and his wife, Gina, decided to launch Brick House Fitness and MMA. Nick is currently training people out of Dethrone Base Camp’s 2 locations (Bullard & Marks, and Peach & Kings Canyon) Nick offers individual and group lessons, they also put on private group self defense seminars for church groups, school districts, teachers, office groups, bar bouncers, security and anyone else who is interested. They also feel strongly against kids being bullied and offer kids self defense. Jan 15th at 3pm, Brick House Fitness and MMA will be hosting their next women’s self-defense seminar at Dethrone (Bullard & Marks) $25 per person. Call 559-472-6030 for more information. When payday rolls around, it can be tempting to pocket every last dollar. But realistically, it’s difficult to save money that’s right in front if you. Instead, automate payments into your savings account before it makes it to your checking account. This way, you won’t miss it from your budget, and you’ll be on the road to staying true to your New Year’s resolution all year. Dine in. Everyone knows eating out is more expensive than dining in, but you might not even realize how often you’re doing it. When you’re on the go, buying lunch or ordering take-out, costs quickly add up. Pre-planning and preparing meals for the week ahead will not only save money but help you eat healthier at the same time. Rethink your wireless plan. Do you feel like you’re paying too much for your data? In 2017, set yourself free from your overpriced wireless plan. For only $40 a month, Net10 Wireless’ no contract cell service makes this easy. You’ll get nationwide coverage on one of America’s top four networks and the first 3GB of data at high speeds, then at 2G*. Plus, you can make the switch while keeping your current phone and number with the Net10 Wireless Bring Your Own Phone program. Bring the gym home. Exercising is important, but monthly gym membership fees can make a huge dent in your savings. Instead, try working out at home for a few months by following exercise videos, running outside (weather permitting) or modifying your favorite utilizing home items. Cut out your cable bill. Similar to spending too much on a cell data contract, your monthly cable bills could also be hindering your financial goals. How often do you really watch specialty channels anyway? Opting for monthly streaming services can cost you as low as $7.99 per month while offering the same programs and movies you love. Meanwhile, the average cable bill is $99 per month. Making the switch could save you more than $1,000 per year, which just goes to show how sticking to your New Year’s resolution can pay off. *At 2G speeds, the functionality of some data applications, such as streaming audio or video may be affected.

e all remember the song…. “The shin bone’s connected to the thigh bone. The thigh bones connected to the hip bone.” The human body is a complex structure filled with many connected organs and tissues. Ensuring good health in each of those parts and pieces can prove to be a daunting task at times. Implementing all natural, drug-free options to care for these precious body parts makes health and overall well-being accessible and obtainable. Few body structures have more influence over your overall health than your central nervous system. And few body systems have more impact on your central nervous system than the craniosacral system. The craniosacral system is the soft tissues and fluid that protect your brain and spinal cord, which is ground zero for nerve endings. CranioSacral Therapy releases tensions within the central nervous system, allowing our bodies to self-correct and relax. Freeing restrictions in the central nervous system naturally eliminates pain, reduces stress, strengthens your resistance to disease, and enhances your overall well-being. CranioSacral Therapy assists people to release both physical pains as well as emotional pains and traumas. Since all systems in our bodies are interconnected and interrelated, our physical and emotional pains often heal simultaneously. Even when we are not aware of the connection between our physical and emotional sides, our body recognizes the link. Memories that have been stored at a cellular level can be released, restoring our bodies and souls back to equilibrium and health. CranioSacral Therapy normally takes place in a quiet, private setting while you recline on a padded table. You remain fully clothed and conscious during the session. The therapist uses a light touch approach – normally not more than the weight of a nickel on your body – to monitor the rhythm of the fluid that surrounds and nourishes your central ner-

vous system. While some people easily feel the energy releases in their body during a session, others feel just an overall sense of peace and grounding. A CranioSacral session can also be enhanced with the use of therapeutic-grade essential oils. Since the sense of smell goes straight to the emotional center of the brain, essential oils often prompt healings that may have remained elusive during other treatment options. Essential oils have also been shown to impact our physical bodies by strengthening the immune system, eliminating viruses and bacteria, reducing inflammation, and increasing the level of oxygen in the blood. Other studies have shown essential oils can reduce pain, heal skin, release toxins from organs, increase metabolism, and even help you sleep. They can also be used as insect repellent, deodorizers, perfume, and flavor your water. There are a wide variety of uses, all of which promote good health and well-being. Therapeutic-grade essential oils are the primary component of the Raindrop Technique. Originating from traditions of the Native American Lakota tribe, the Raindrop Technique has been shown to remove toxins from the nerve endings along the spine. By clearing the waste from the nerves, regeneration and healing can begin. The foundation of the Raindrop Technique includes nine essential oils applied to the vitaflex points on the bottom of both feet as well as the spinal column. Other oils are often added to address individual needs. Why do people receive CranioSacral Therapy? The number one reason is, “I’ve tried everything, and nothing has worked. I still feel awful.” The second most popular response is, “I am not really sick, but I don’t feel healthy either. I want to be truly healthy.” If either of these reasons sounds like they came out of your own mouth, call me. Let CranioSacral Therapy, Raindrop Technique, and therapeutic-grade essential oils connect all of your parts and pieces into a happy and healthy bundle of YOU!

A Foodie’s Review

hai cuisine is a spicy oasis of harmonious and unique combinations of flavors. The dishes are of Chinese technique, typically, but have flavor profiles that are sweet, sour, bitter, salty, and spicy. The juggling required to blend disparate elements into a balanced finish is Thai food at its core. I’ve sampled Thai food across Fresno and have even cooked it in my home, but the one place I’ve found that gets it right is Thai Country Kitchen in Clovis. Walking up to the outside of the restaurant, it appeared very unassuming. No flashing lights or sprawling decor to lure in a potentially hungry patron. However, despite the lackluster display, it didn’t change the fact that this is certainly a place to acquire some great food. The restaurant is tiny to be sure, about 13 tables with a small kitchen in the back. The inside is simple, clean with a few accent pieces to distinguish the establishment as Thai. Most of the tables accommodate a party of 4 with only a few tables that seat either more, or less than 4 guests. Availability on this Thursday was extremely limited as the restaurant was completely full, even though they just opened only 30 minutes before! Fortunately, however, a table was available within 5

minutes of my request. I was given 2 menus, which were both quite extensive. This could be a bit troubling for those who are just being introduced to the world of Thai food. However, there are specials the house recommends as their signature dishes. After staring at the menus for a good five minutes and being completely beside myself, I then decide to check out what other people are ordering to help me make up my mind. The plates coming out of the kitchen all looked great, but one in particular caught my eye. It was the house specialty, Thai Basil. I order it immediately along with the papaya salad. My plates both arrived looking very clean in presentation. Every item had its own place neatly organized on the plate. Neither of them were an all-in-one dish in and of themselves. They more resembled tiny buffet tables where the diner takes each element and combines them to create tailored bites filled with the flavors he/she wants to taste. The papaya salad had green papaya that had been shredded into long strands and drizzled with lime dressing. The ingredients consisting of tomatoes, cabbage, peanuts, and of course the papaya, were all fresh and very delicious. Everything played well together but most surprisingly, it was the

| FRESNOFLYER.COM |

peanuts that I enjoyed the most about the salad. The way the peanuts paired with the spiciness of the chili and the citris of the lime was exceedingly well. My only complaint would be that this dish came with too much dressing. With the Thai Basil I found the chicken to be perfectly cooked and flavorful with each bite. The level of spice was spot on, enough heat to saturate the mouth without overwhelming it. Just the way I like it. And the noodles were simply sublime, cooked to perfection and permeated with flavor and spice. The white rice on the dish provided a great way to cleanse the palette and cool off in between bites. The mushrooms added an earthy tone and the onions provided some sweetness to the dish. To sum up the entire experience I would say that these dishes weren’t exactly a refined experience. Instead, it was some down-and-dirty, damn good cooking. Fresh ingredients cooked extremely well and then put on a plate for the diner to combine as they see fit for a completely customized experience. I have one last thing to say about Thai Country Kitchen and this style of cooking and it is, “Yes please! Sign me up again.”
