EDITOR’S NOTE It’s a few short days from Valentine’s, but a few short head turns and it’s easy to see that many people aren’t all that concerned about it. Last year around this time, the feeling in the air was very split, as it is every year. Some dread the day treating it like some impending doom, others sweat profusely in front of shelves, rows, or web pages of gift options, and the rest skip about pulling the petals from flowers hoping to land on “He/She loves me.” And it’s not to say that none of us are having this sort of repeat experience, but that it’s a little less of an obsession. The climate of what’s considered important is shifting, or rather, it has already shifted. We had considered, originally, in the draft of this particular issue to theme the content and pages in the vein of Valentine’s Day, but it felt frivolous and

trite. Instead, we wanted to showcase a local artist whose gift was able to develop because the arts were available as part of the curriculum in public schools. We turned our ‘Fun Facts’ section into a series highlighting the history of great strides made by Black Americans in honor of Black History Month, and we’ll continue to do so in the next issue as well. The point is that it felt pertinent to remain focused on the things that matter. Sure, Love matters, but Valentine’s Day has become less about celebrating love and more about how much money you can spend to adequately show how much someone matters to you. I don’t know about you, but showing people you love that you care is a thing you make an effort to do everyday and not just a couple times a year.

reating art feels like therapy. There is a true sense of joy when I paint that I can’t really replicate with anything else I do,” shares local artist, Jonathan Lopez, when asked about his craft and process. And as one would expect, spoken like a true artist. Brush to canvas, there’s evidence of that joy in the artwork by the way the paint moves across objects in imagery and replicates the illusion of light. Lopez’s work signifies a delicate care in detail that no part of his vision goes astray, and every spec of paint serves as an equally important part of the entire experience. Nothing on the canvas feels out of place, all of it existing as a whole satisfying visual spectacle of color. A mixture of innate talent and conventional beginnings, Lopez developed his love and taste for painting during the various levels of art classes offered in all 4 years of high school. With it, Lopez solidified a foundation that helped to develop the unique style found in his work today. “Usually, when working on a new piece, I tend to spend a few days researching and coming up with small thumbnail sketches of what I want

to accomplish… [I start] first with a detailed sketch on the canvas and then begin the process of applying the paint,” explains Lopez about how he enters each new piece, making sure that each section of blank canvas is given a well articulated map. But no map finds its beginning without at least a spark of inspiration to pave its way. And for Lopez, It’s the powerful world of cinema that lunges out and seizes him by the shirt collar, filling his mind with a surge of creative energy. Film requires such a profound collective effort for its stunning visuals, layered storytelling, the musical score and beyond that it incites an undeniable emotional response from its audience to give them a unique experience. This particular dynamism propels Lopez into his studio, alight with the drive to provide something just as engaging for his audience. “I want people to come away feeling like they’ve seen something refreshing… Most importantly, I want to connect with people through my artwork,” states Lopez. If his artwork sends you cascading into a realm of original thought that provokes you to pick up a pen or brush or pop open that laptop to create something of your own vision, he’s made a connection with you. By sharing his artwork, if he’s inspired you to create some of your own, then you’ve transcended beyond just a customary polite conversation over any single piece, but onto something deeper without ever needing to speak a single word. And that is extraordinary. If you’re a regular visitor of the monthly Arthop events, you’ll most likely come across some of Jonathan Lopez’s work firsthand. And if you’re willing to make the trip down to Santa Monica, Lopez is set for a show early summer in June at the 31 Ten Lounge. Visit www.31TenLounge.

How To Use Essential Oils By Mary Bell

So I bought this bottle of essential oils. Now what do I do with it? I hear that question all of the time. Let me try to eliminate the mystery of these wonderful gems. First let’s talk about diffusing essential oils. One common method of diffusing oils is to purchase a diffusing machine. These come in several variations. Some use air while others use water to fill the air with your favorite oil. Diffusers can use cotton pads or bamboo or other things to hold the oil while it is diffusing. Higher end machines offer the option of a timer and lights. Most diffusers allow you to diffuse more than one oil at a time. You will be amazed how many times you will want to do this! Young Living also makes a diffuser that fits in your USB plug in your computer. That means you can take it everywhere you go. If purchasing a diffuser is not an option, there are other ways to fill the air with your favorite oil. Place a few drops of your favorite oil on a cotton ball and put in where the sun shines. The heat of the sun will dissipate the oil for you. This is also a great way to freshen your car. Place an essential oil infused cotton ball on the dashboard of your car. Be careful when diffusing oils to not place the oil directly on the heat source. For example, if you rub oils directly onto a light bulb (thinking it will diffuse when the bulb gets hot) all you will get is smoke. Smoke is not the goal. Some people love to rub oils directly onto their skin. This option is safe with most oils. If an oils is called “hot” you might want to mix it with a carrier oil before applying topically. Oils that target digestive problems can be rubbed directly onto your stomach. Many essential oils double as perfume and are dabbed behind the ears. When you want to smell the oils, rubbing them on your shoulders or dabbing behind your ears works best. For those times when you want the therapeutic value of the oil without smelling it, rubbing the oil on the vita flex point on the bottom of your foot works well. Again, use a carrier oil for any oils that are sensitive to your skin or are “hot” oils. When rubbing oils on your skin, be sure to wash your hands afterwards. While most oils will not damage your eyeball, it still

stings when you accidentally rub them in your eye because they were on your fingertips and you forgot. Last but not least, we come to ingesting oils. When is it safe to ingest essential oils? I can only speak to Young Living essential oils and no other brand. If a bottle of Young Living oil specifically says it is a dietary supplement, then it can be ingested. Ask your Young Living distributor for clarification if you are not sure. What is the easiest way to ingest oils? Gel capsules are always a great option (it is much easier to get the oil inside the capsule than you would think.) Other options include mixing with a couple ounces of water and drinking it. Place a couple drops of oil on a cracker and eat it. Using essential oils in your cooking and baking is another easy option. Using essential oils in the kitchen is the perfect solution to our busy lifestyles. Most people rarely take the effort to purchase or grow fresh herbs. Dried spices from the grocery store do not contain the same potency and medicinal benefits as fresh herbs or essential oils. For picky eaters (those with texture issues and those who do not like to see the “floating things” in their food) essential oils add flavor and health benefits without the visual proof that they are there. Your kids can get the health benefits of oils without picking at their plate. Some common oils for cooking include black pepper, oregano, thyme, basil, rosemary, marjoram, and dill.Baking can also pack a health punch using essential oils. Substitute essential oils for extracts and see what happens to your health. Some common oils for baking include nutmeg, cloves, orange, tangerine, lemon, grapefruit, and cinnamon bark. Many of these oils also are a great addition to a glass of water. How you use essential oils is an individual choice. Whether you diffuse, apply topically, or ingest, your body and soul can still reap the therapeutic rewards from the oils. You may decide to use one option at home and a different option at work. Sometimes the method depends on how well you like the smell of the oil. Experiment a bit and discover what works best for you. You will not regret adding essential oils to your life.

When you skip breakfast, the body panics for nutrition, so come lunch you tend to overeat. This in turn overwhelms the metabolism and you end up with peaks and pits of energy throughout the day. For steady energy and efficient calorie-burning, eat a nutritious breakfast and other meals on schedule.

Encourages Healthy Choices

Why Eating Breakfast Boosts Your Health (BPT) - Want to make 2017 the year you focus on your health? Wellness goals are admirable throughout the year, but too often well-meaning people make a common mistake that sabotages their efforts: they skip breakfast. It’s a daily choice that millions of people shrug off as no big deal, but research proves breakfast is an important component in how you feel throughout the day. Fueling up solely on java may perk you up momentarily, but it doesn’t do the trick long-term. Consider these five reasons why breakfast boosts your health and should not be ignored.

Awakens Your Metabolism When you eat breakfast, you “break the fast” from your sleep periods and give your metabolism a wake-up call. When you sleep, your metabolism slows and you burn fewer calories while you rest. By eating a nutritious breakfast, you are sparking your internal engine so it burns calories and gives you more energy throughout the day.

Saroyan discusses his cultural heritage and its importance and influence on his becoming a writer. He rejects money, fame and glory and ultimately goes back to his roots and finds his final rest. The film features narration by Saroyan and actor Mike Connors as well as graphic illustrations by Sarkis Muradyan, a musical score by Paul Nazlikian, and arrangements by Mike Dana. The Weekend Blender A Kids Art Hop by Lisa Talley

Every month, Fresno communities flock together to view original work by local artists all across a variety of venues and galleries in the form of ArtHop organized by the Fresno Arts Council. The Weekend Blender plays a familiar role, inspired by the monthly ArtHops, organizer Diehardz & Son decided it was time Clovis had one showcasing the artworks of talented kids. The Weekend Blender is back again during February 24, 25, & 26, at the Sierra Vista Mall and this special event will be packed full of activities and excitement for families and kids of all ages. This free event is open to the public. It’ll be a great opportunity for not only young artists to showcase their work, but also for those in attendance to support local vendors as well

since a number of local businesses will be hosting booths at the event. The family fun extravaganza will feature art in a multitude of different categories containing Graphic Design, Sculpting and Photography for children, with the inclusion of the same categories for artists 18 and over also. Some guests who made special appearances during the September Weekend Blender such as South Valley Squad of the 501st Legion, Hawk Girl, and Batman, are expected to be making a repeat appearance during this February’s Blender. One exceptionally notable guests joining the event this time around will be actor, Vernon Wells, who played notorious villains in the cult classic films The Road Warrior (Mad Max 2) and Weird Science.

| FRESNO FLYER |

This will be the first time the Australian native will visit the Fresno/Clovis area to appear at an event. Although he has been to the Central Valley on different occasions to enjoy wineries and horseback riding, it’ll be Wells’ first foray into our specific area. “I think it will be fun to do a convention in a shopping mall as I have not done one of these in America. It’ll also be a lot of fun meeting all the kids and seeing all of their artwork and what they’ve done,” shares Vernon on what he’s most excited about during his appearance at the event. Vernon Wells has been very active since The Road Warrior working on a number of films and providing his voice for video games such as the recent release of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, released just this month, Inquisitor releasing next month and The Lighthouse Keeper are all films to keep an eye on for more of Wells’ work. Wells will be

signing autographs while meeting and greeting with attendees of the event in support of kids making and showing their art. The Weekend Blender is still open for submission of artwork in all categories. The deadline has been extended to the 23rd and CEO Pete Salazar of Diehardz & Son says, “We’re looking for everything. From pencil to paint, photography, graphic design and sculpture.” Each artist is welcome to submit up to 8 pieces.
