EDITOR’S NOTE Talk. It’s a word to describe one of the most powerful tools available to the human race. We use it to resolve conflict with each other, to express appreciation, and to enjoy shared interests in a variety of pastimes that make life a pleasant experience. But like everything else, there’s another side to this coin we can’t ignore. We use ‘talk’ to distract and excuse a great deal of things both big and small. We conveniently pull this essential tool out of our pockets to fill the silence with sometimes meaningless chatter. And it’s something we’re all guilty of, even me. It’s not always an intentional insult to our character to misuse the gift of gab, in all honesty we do mean well… most of the time. But it’s here that we owe ourselves a little bit of candor. Because, as it so happens, we often find ourselves talking

2

| FEBRUARY 23 & MARCH 2, 2017

too much and following through all too little. And then we find ourselves in a slender slice of accidental trouble with not ‘putting our money where our mouths are’ so-to-speak. It’s the outcry of ‘Corporations are destroying small business!’ yet still going to Walmart for all your essentials. It’s the vehement discussion about how our society let government have too much control for far too long, yet won’t watch the local City Council meetings’ live stream. Again, we’re all guilty of it. Even me. The point here is that we at least acknowledge it and challenge ourselves to follow through on one thing we habitually let fall through the cracks. Example: ‘I support the arts.’ Do you? Of course you do, you’re reading this paper. But when’s the last time you went | FRESNO FLYER |

to a theater performance, local music show, or gallery where the artist wasn’t a close friend? When was the last time you went to a show on a whim in the hopes of finding your next favorite group or play? The crime here is that too many of us can’t remember. We filled this issue with as much Rogue Festival material as we could fit because it’s this phenomenal display of talent jam packed with originality. And it’s all pouring through Fresno as a mixture of homegrown and national talent. With the current climate of things, the arts need all the support they can get from everyone who has ever vocally stood with them. If it’s been a while since your last foray into the theatrical unknown, this would be a great opportunity to jump back in. Flip on over to the calendar and

check out the shows happening through the first half of March. Find something you can get jazzed about, anything that sounds interesting or piques your curiosity, and go. Get out there and support the arts. Don’t just talk about it.

The 16th Annual Rogue Festival Fresno’s most uncontrolled performing arts event, returns March 2-11, 2017

00 performances by 50 performers in 8 Tower District venues over 8 days in Fresno’s biggest festival of cutting edge theater and performance The Rogue Festival, Fresno’s biggest and quirkiest theater and arts event, will return to the Tower District March 2-11. This year’s 16th annual Rogue Festival will present 300 performances of theater, music, dance, comedy spoken word performances over eight days in eight separate venues, and is expected to attract over 3,000 attendees. Over its 16 years of operation, the Rogue Festival has steadily grown in size and prominence — most notably, the Rogue Festival was profiled last year in an Atlantic Monthly cover story on the revitalization of American cities. But for this year, the Rogue’s new executive director, Heather Parish, decided on a back-to-basics approach that emphasizes the Rogue’s roots as a scrappy, do-it-yourself festival. “At a time when our society’s commitment to free speech seems precarious, the Rogue Festival is especially important as a First Amendment zone where artists are able to express themselves in any way they please,” said Parish. “So for this year’s Festival, we’ve cut some secondary events to focus on the Rogue’s core mission, giving artists a space where they can say whatever they want without censorship. The Rogue is the only non-curated, non-adjudicated arts festival in the San Joaquin Valley. We don’t evaluate or select submissions — we just accept whoever applies as long as we have available slots. So if you want to see art that is uncensored and unmediated, the Rogue is the place to be.” The Rogue is also going back to its roots as a festival created to encourage artists to produce new work. Every show in the 2017 Rogue Festival is an original work, conceived and written by the artist performing it. The performances in the 2017 Rogue Festival cover a huge range of styles and moods, presenting theater, music, dance, stand-up comedy, spoken word and clown; intense drama, laugh-out-loud comedy and biting satire; performers from across the US, Canada, England and Australia; and shows for every audience from | FRESNOFLYER.COM |

kids-friendly G rated to bawdy Adults Only. “What I love about the Rogue Festival is that there is something for everybody, but not everything in the Rogue is for everybody. The Rogue demonstrates that art doesn’t have to be nice or make the audience feel comfortable. There will be shows in this Rogue that you will absolutely hate, but there will be shows that you’ll love, too. I encourage everyone to take a chance on seeing shows that are way out of your comfort zone. Nobody decides what’s good or bad at the Rogue except the audience,” said Parish.

InnerEar Poets Monday, March 6, 6:30 p.m. Mia Cuppa Caffe. 620 E Olive Ave, Fresno. Tickets $10 at the door. ROGUE FESTIVAL BASICS The Rogue Festival is one of the largest and best respected Fringe Festivals in the western United States and part of a worldwide movement of Fringe theater festivals around the world, celebrating the independent artist rather than established arts institutions.

The Rogue is Fresno’s home for edgy, uncensored, avant-garde performances you won’t see anywhere else. Many of the acts in the Rogue are original works that are written and performed for the first time by the artists performing them, so Rogue audiences enjoy art they’ll never experience anywhere else. Audiences at the Rogue Festival will have their pick of an incredible variety of entertainment, with shows happening simultaneously at eight different Tower District venues. Rogue Festival performances are presented in rapid rotation — no show is longer than one hour, and intermissions between shows are only a half-hour. Most Rogue shows cost $10 or less, so the ideal way to experience the Rogue is to see multiple shows during every day of the festival. The mission of the Rogue Festival is to eliminate all barriers between the independent artist and the audience. The Rogue is a non-curated festival, meaning that Rogue Festival staff do not select the acts that perform at the Rogue. All applications to perform in the Rogue Festival are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. No one controls what’s in the Rogue, so it is a true First Amendment zone — you can see the greatest show ever, you can see the worst show ever, and you will definitely see shows that will challenge your comfort zone. The Rogue Festival is also a non-juried festival, meaning that no prizes are given and there is no judging of content. The audience decides for itself what it likes and doesn’t like, so the Rogue Festival encourages word-of-mouth and online reviews from audience members. The other mission of the Rogue Festival is to eliminate barriers between independent artists and their earnings. One hundred percent of all ticket sales goes directly to performers. The Rogue Festival, a registered 501(c)(3) organization, supports itself through sales of Festival wristbands, individual contributions, and sponsorships. Tickets to Rogue Festival performances can be purchased online in advance or at the door starting 30 minutes before each performance. The Rogue Festival draws 3,000 audience members into the Tower District, most of whom combine their Rogueing with dining, drinking and shopping at Tower District businesses, creating a sizable contribution to the local economy.

Explore Beautiful Downtown Fresno By Ben Phillips

W

andering the streets of Downtown Fresno is an unusual experience. As I see the construction pylons and heavy equipment renovating the Fulton Mall or the new overpass where the HSR will soon bring trainloads of people to our town, I see the glimmer of the budding and vibrant Fresno of tomorrow. Stopping at the steps of the Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium to capture the golden light of the evening sun on the icon FAC Water Tower across the street, my heart flutters as my viewfinder transports me to a Fresno of days past, carved by hand out of the dust and weeds by those pioneer men and women who were eager to make a living from the land. As I continue to develop my skills as a (very) amateur photographer, I am enchanted by the beauty of our city. I spent a few years living abroad and easily walked hundreds of miles along the streets of large urban metropoles like Milan and Turin, Italy. But Fresno is home. There is a rough elegance to the architecture and familiar charm to the simple cityscape that makes this a beautiful area to shoot. Downtown is and will continue to be one of my favorite locations to capture the magic of ‘home.’ If interested in Fresno souvenirs, visit The Old Historic Water Tower, Tree of Life Cafe and Bakery, Gazebo Gardens, Root General, Kiku Floral and the Urban Umbrella in Old Town Clovis. All souvenirs are handmade and photos are taken by Pedro Urena local artist. this powerful and magical play back to Rogue Festival, March 2 - 11, 2017 at California Arts Academy (*It was originally performed as a workshop production for 3 shows at Rogue Fest 2016). Wilcox is a veteran Rogue Fest performer – this being her 8th time to Fresno’s Rogue Fest! The Wallaby Way is a passionate, intimate, and emotionally-charged show that takes the audience on Wilcox’s most recent journey to a remote, rugged island

off the coast of Tasmania, Australia. Along the way it explores her last relationship, her maternal lineage, and what fleeing the North American distractions resulted for her. All this culminates in one of Wilcox’s riskiest performances and is an exciting quantum leap from her usual performance style of a bare stage and 20 characters. This time Wilcox delves into a more personal, revealing and vulnerable delivery with the guiding force support of a mysterious marsupial, magical puppets, a mesmerizing mask, a labyrinth, and an enormous amount of red yarn, as she ventures through thick and thin to find clarity, closure, and peace with the tragedy that has clouded her mind and life. Attendance and Participation: The 2016 Rogue Festival issued over 9,800 tickets to 55 acts giving 280 performances. Comparatively, the first year’s festival in 2002 had 12 performers with 48 shows, and in 2005 the Festival had 40 performers with 120 shows and 4,800 tickets sold. The Box Office goes to performers, not the festival: The festival pays 100% of the ticketed prices to participating artists. In 2016, Rogue Festival performer payouts totaled over $54,600. Non-Curated, Non-Juried Festival: The Rogue Festival is an annual, non-juried performance festival, which means all performer slots are booked on a first-comefirst-served basis with no adjudicating of content or style. This year’s applications were booked within 90 minutes. The non-juried rule allows artists to be free with their chosen subjects and allows audiences to decide for themselves what they like and don’t like. Community Events: The Rogue Festival also holds community events during its run including The Annual Rogue Teaser Show in which a variety of acts from the Festival give a two minute preview of their show and the audience can enjoy a cocktail, get their Rogue Festival swag, bid on silent auction items, and mingle with the artists. Additionally, there is the Beatdown Poetry Slam: Rogue v. InnerEar Poets where Fresno Poet S. Brian Medina’s Inner Ear Poetry team matches their verbal acuity against a team of performers from the Rogue Festival. Origins: Rogue Festival was the brainchild of Fresno playwright Marcel Nunis. The first festival was located at Fresno’s Sanctuary Youth Center. The festival was so popular, it had to be moved to the Tower District for more performers and a wider variety of audiences. Venues: The venues at the Rogue Festival are a combination of local clubs and theatres, coffee shops, art galleries, and businesses with a patio that can be converted to a performance area. This year, the Festival will have 8 venues. Venues always start shows ontime. Supporting Local Business: Local Businesses in Fresno’s Tower District have the option of partnering with the festival for promoting their services, restaurants and shops to the approximately 3,000 attendees expected over 8 days. Mission: Rogue Festival is an annual, non-juried performance festival held in Fresno’s Historic Tower District and surrounding areas. The Festival aspires to bring emerging and established artists to audiences with works that are imaginative, innovative, and enriching. Rogue Festival strives to foster stronger relationships in the community by joining local businesses, audiences, and performers to share this gift of human creativity.

(BPT) - What’s the biggest threat to our health? It isn’t cancer or even accidents, but heart disease. According to the American Heart Association, one in four deaths in the U.S. is caused by heart disease, which includes heart attack and stroke. This statistic is scary, but the good news is, there is something powerful we can do to prevent us from becoming a victim to this disease. “Food is quite literally one of the best medicines out there when it comes to improving our health,” says registered dietitian nutritionist, Dawn Jackson Blatner. “Studies show us repeatedly that a balanced diet including heart-healthy unsaturated fats, along with multiple servings of fruit and vegetables can give you additional protection against heart attack and stroke.” Here are five of Blatner’s go-to foods you can easily incorporate into your diet for a daily dose of heart-healthy compounds.

1. Fish: Salmon and other fatty fish such as sardines are chock full of omega-3 fatty acids, which lower the risk of irregular heartbeat and help decrease plaque buildup in the arteries. If fish isn’t already in your meal rotation, it’s time

inal crew is back, plus a couple of new recruits. Rehearsals are going well. But as we gear up for the next installment a lot of us are reflecting on why we’re doing it and what we’re gaining from the experience. For John Alden, co-directing this year with Mike, it’s about collaboration. “The family that comes together to do a production like this is absolutely the best. We rely on each other in ways that bio-fams can’t. Ultimately, for me, its about fellowship, creating collectively, and family.” For our Music Director, Larry Lindberg, it’s the opportunity to re-stimulate some creative juices. “During grad school at CalArts I participated in an Interdisciplinary Studies program that involved collaboration between students from other performance areas. We created and staged a multi-media opera as one of our projects. It’s been one of my desires ever since to work on projects like that again.” For Valerie Priest, who splits time between acting and sound effects, it’s about growth. “My favorite part of the production process is when individuals arrive at ‘a ha’ moments. I truly love work shopping with open-minded professionals. It’s enlightening to see the progression of teamwork and focus.” For Mike Workman, the meaning goes a little deeper. “My mom always wanted me to be a performer of some type. She was always after to me to audition for a local community theater group. One of my deepest regrets is that my mother passed away before this show was conceived. So, I’m doing this for Mom, my wife and all those who believe in me more than I believe in myself!” For me, it’s about loving friendships, creativity, and beer! Three of my favorite things!

BEERS ABOUT SONGS Singer-songwriter Ryan Adam Wells is touring his 5-star solo show from Texas. Original songs outline a tale of love, danger and drunkenness. Join singer-songwriter Ryan Adam Wells for some sad, funny and poignant true stories about alcohol and relationships. Offer up a prayer to the Beer Gods and enjoy the tunes. (non-drinkers welcome!) Ryan has been a key member of vaudeville comedy trio ‘Sound & Fury’ for 7 years. The group has enjoyed much success over this time whilst touring their award-winning (including 3x winner Adelaide Fringe People’s Choice Award) shows throughout the U.S, Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom. Ryan, whist performing with Sound & Fury in both Perth and Adelaide this year, stepped out to perform his solo show ‘Beers About Songs’. Having enjoyed great success with the show in Australia, the U.S and Canada, Ryan will now continue touring his show both nationally and internationally in 2017. Ryan Adam Wells describes his show as “A personal story of my life that shares funny and thoughtful stories of drinking and relationships. I am playing my guitar for the entirety of the show whilst sharing stories and performing an array of original songs.” Although thoroughly entertaining, ‘Beers About Songs’ communicates an underlying theme that will make you both laugh and cry. With personal stories and touching songs, it is guaranteed to make you open your eyes to the world of relationships.

Sh*t Show: An Invisible Story of Illness - Portland OR

Boxcar Figaro

One woman bravely performs a magic act in reverse: making invisible illness visible. When Anna Sell, a gifted clown, storyteller, and songwriter, was diagnosed she fought inner demons and social stigmas to make one thing clear: laughter is the best medicine.

Returning to Rogue Festival 2017 with their ninth consecutive original show. This popular Fresno Americana/folk band specializes in intelligent, well crafted original songs, and unexpected covers of popular songs spanning the past 7 decades.

Fresno CA

Fresno Dance Collective: What the Body Remembers Fresno CA An exploration of the body; the perceptions, value systems, biases, and inclinations both viewers and performers have on the body; and the relationship the body has with the mind, the self, other minds, and other selves.

Bravo 25

2016 Rogue Sell-out Performer Windy Wynazz (Rich & Famous) is back... and this time she’s brough Australian comic Michele Machete. The dynamic duo host an interactive Birthday Party Extravaganza complete with puppets, Magic, and revelry... yea revelry. Adults Only!

Ronen Sberlo - San Francisco CA

Can we forgive someone who is dead? What about someone who isn’t dead? Can we forgive an avatar? Eliza Gibson returns to Fresno to premiere her new solo show, Bravo 25, starring Amber, an A.I. avatar therapist and six humans.

When life became too absurd, Ronen Sberlo finally found solace by joining a cult and moving to a mountain top compound. After living there for almost three years, he started having doubts that he had chosen the right path. Now, years later, he has something to say about society, and about life, that may surprise you.

“Gibson’s characters are well articulated and her stage presence is stellar.” - Donald Munro, Fresno Bee

Moonlight After Midnight

Tidal Surge

Figment - Figmentally

Concrete Drops - Brooklyn NY

Giant Nerd Productions - Seattle WA

Drea Lusion & Oneiric Eric - Oakland CA

A cross between the play Venus In Fur and the movie Inception. When a man and woman mistakenly meet in a hotel room, their flirtation becomes a role-playing game that spins out of their control, leading to a thrilling and heartbreaking finale they never see coming.

The tides will rise as the ice caps melt. At the end of the world, three women fight to survive as their lives rapidly change. Inspired by ancient myths and modern shifts, this show posits what will happen to humanity as the climate changes around us.

Where does one figment end and another begin? Imagination melts, morphs, sprouts limbs, light bulbs, and illusions - until a reality check threatens to topple it all. A theatrical comedy brought to life with magic, larger than life puppetry, acrobatic dance, and you.
