EDITOR’S NOTE “There are 3 sides to every story, your side, my side, and the truth.” Yet, the meaning of truth has become convoluted over the last few months, and it’s something that has become more and more subjective in definition as time drags on. I watch people shake their fists at the media, screaming that they’re lying to the people. And then, moments later, these same proclaimers of justice and defenders of truth cite other ‘independent’ or ‘alternative’ media sources blindly. You know which ones I’m talking about… the ones that are 2 steps away from being a tabloid in the grocery store screaming at you with headlines like “WOMAN GIVES BIRTH TO ALIEN, LOOKS JUST LIKE ELVIS!’ Since when did we lose our ability to think critically?

2

| MARCH 9 & 16, 2017

We’re angry because multiple main stream media outlets are owned by the same corporations, causing many of those outlets to share the same stories with the same perspective, yet we want to run to the nearest ‘independent news’ site and claim that truth furiously sharing link after link without pausing to vet the credibility of the author. Why, because it’s not mainstream? Or is it because it aligns with how you feel? And I should also note in the effort to be perfectly fair, not all independent sources of information are invalid as a whole, it’s just that we have to approach all information with critical thought. Same with mainstream media. So what’s my point exactly? My point is that we shouldn’t be afraid to do

| FRESNO FLYER |

a little digging to get closer to the truth of things, while maintaining an objective viewpoint. Oftentimes, articles and or news stories are a window into a larger issue with an even longer backstory. Some information will be a little easier to track down, and others will require a bit more of conversation. The Fresno Flyer doesn’t cover news or publish hard hitting stories that define our communities… but we might, somewhere in the near future. And we could print articles surrounding delicate issues if we felt it imperative to do so, somewhere in the near future. So starting and maintaining an open and transparent communication line between the editor (me) and the readership (you) is important now more than ever as we

But as a sponsor, they’ll also be hosting, and they’ve put together some unique experiences for all those headed to the event. Presenting a multi-panel graffiti/ brush art show, they’ll be displaying 20 panels that are 4’x6’ each painted by select artists. There will also be a live Art Fusion show in which a group of volunteer artists will team up to produce 5 different chalk art pieces to become a mash-up masterpiece. All of these will be packaged up and raffled off, giving event-goers rare memorabilia to commemorate this year’s expo. The 13th Annual Fresno Tattoo Expo expects to host over 200 tattoo artists from around the world along with performances, contests, and for the first time ever, a car show featuring the finest lowriders. eturning this year to the Central Valley will be the 13th Annual Fresno Tattoo Expo at the Big Fresno Fairgrounds March 25-26. The event features over 200 artists from around the world, live music, a car show, contests and live art shows. A variety of vendors will also be present to showcase their merchandise, and according to event runner Jason Pistoresi, there won’t be anyone that doesn’ belong to the tattoo community. “If you’re an attending artist you’re not going to be next to a guy selling knock off purses and sunglasses, like we’ve seen before, unfortunately,” Pistoresi says. There will be a broad spectrum from clothing apparel to a company called The Heart of Mexico, who will be presenting Day of the Dead and Mexican folklore inspired art. The Fresno Tattoo Expo has been going on 13 years strong, but the success has been a bit of a surprise. “It wasn’t easy, in the beginning, to invite known artists to Fresno. It seemed as if Fresno had a bit of a bad wrap, but as time went on those artists realized that Fresno comes to support and get tattooed at the event in a major way,” shares Pistoresi. Contests will be going on during the event as well, details and times about each contest can be found on the event’s website www. CentralValleyTattoo.com. The first place trophy will be the signature custom designed skateboard deck by one of the attending artists. For the first time ever, the Fresno Tattoo Expo will be featuring an indoor car show to highlight the Valley’s finest lowriders. Expect to see Riding Low Magazine out and about covering the event. Tickets to enter each day is $20, but a weekend pass is available for $30. The event is all ages and kids under 12 are able to enter for free. The expo will run on March 25 from 11 am - 11 pm and March 26 from noon - 8 pm. Further information on how to purchase tickets can be found on the website at www.CentralValleyTattoo.com

Embrace Cuban influences Many of today’s hottest cooking trends have Cuban influences. For example, try marinating a pork tenderloin in citrus, garlic and onions - also known as “Cuban-style.” Serve on top of rice and beans or place between two pieces of bread and enjoy a sandwich bursting with flavor.

Experiment With The Traditional Pork offers a fantastic base for expanding on the flavors you already know and love. For example, spicy teriyaki is reinvented with a touch of spice for a special meal any day of the week. Try this recipe to see for yourself:

Are You A Nomophobe? by Anglia Walpool

A

few weekends ago I took my mom to a local restaurant for lunch, and I noticed, as we sat down, that nearly everyone had their heads down… smiling as they fully immersed themselves in their cell phones. And those who were not staring continuously into the screens of their phones were still frequently glancing down to check on them for some incoming message or alert, all through meal and conversation. It seems like everyone’s distracted these days beyond the norm of the technological advancement thus far. It’s fascinating, interesting, and a little scary. Cell phone addiction appears to be a very strong upward trend. The power to communicate with friends and family, to check your email, do a little online banking, check-in on social media, kill time with a little bit of

various web browsing, and perhaps even play some games make it plain to see why smartphones tend to be more of an extension of our arms than an accessory. It’s evident that this sort of accessibility has made it so easy for us to fall in love with our phones that we often feel we can’t live without. As much as smartphones have made it effortless in staying connected to the world, they’ve also posed significant safety risks. Our need to constantly check our devices for updates and notifications have led us to do so no matter what activities we’re engaged in… like driving. The National Safety Council reports that cell phone use while driving leads to 1.6 million crashes each year. Mobile phones have caused an alarming 400% increase in the amount of time spent with eyes off the road, making

| FRESNO FLYER |

cellphone use while driving a larger risk than drinking and driving. Since teens are more likely than adults to get into an accident while talking or texting behind the wheel, it’s also the leading cause of death for young drivers. Operating a cellular device while driving takes you attention off the the road for an average of five seconds. Approximately 90% of adults in our country possess a cell phone and while distracted driving may not be a big deal for non-drivers, others have developed an enormous dependency on their mobile devices. Addiction comes in many forms and most people are unaware that a problem even exists. This matter is so severe that the condition has been given a name, “Nomophobia,” and it describes a person with a fear of being without their device, or being beyond mobile contact. Nomophobia is the proposed name utilizing the abbreviation created in 2010 for “no-mobile-phone phobia.” Dr. David Greenfield, the director of the Center for Internet and Technology Addiction and the author of Virtual Addiction: Help for Netheads, Cyber Freaks and Those Who Love Them, has stated, “What puts somebody in that category is they are using it to a point where they are experiencing some degree of withdrawal. They are developing intolerance, meaning they are using it more and more.” Clovis Unified School District certainly understands the effects of distractive devices during school hours. Students are allowed to keep their cell phones with them so long as they are in their backpacks and the devices turned off. Many parents and students disagree with the strict cell phone policy, but despite the difference in opinion, one local mom could not be more pleased. “Kids today spend so much time on their cell phones, it’s important to know that hone they are in school they are actually

learning and paying attention,” says Kathy G in favor of the school’s policy. A recent study conducted by MobileInsurance.com, it was found that an average person spends approximately 90 minutes a day on their phone. This figure totals up to 23 days a year and 3.9 years of the average individual life spent staring at a phone screen. In 2015 the Pew Research Center found that 89% of cell phone owners used their phones during the last social engagement they’ve attended and 67% of smartphone owners have admitted to checking their phone for calls or messages when their phone didn’t ring or vibrate. As a whole, society tends to overlook this addictive behavior because it’s not related to alcohol or drugs, maintaining it as an acceptable habit. Yet, phone addiction is on the rise, according to Common Sense Media, an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to helping kids thrive in a world of media and technology, found that Internet addiction might affect between zero and 26% of adolescents as well as college students in the United States based on a 2011 review. They also found that 54% of adult cell phone users have into objects or persons while distracted by their devices. Cell phones and other devices are constantly evolving, which in turn increases the likelihood for overuse and addiction. As the numbers begin to climb, is it time that we begin to acknowledge this addiction as a serious issue? Next time you’re on a drive, sitting at the dinner table with family, or out on the town with friends, pay attention to your own attraction with your smartphone. Texting behind the wheel even though you know you it’s illegal, or checking your phone even without any notifications, may mean that you’re exhibiting signs of Nomophobia.

Largest Annual Anime and Gaming Event Returns to the Central Valley

ni-Me Con returns to Fresno this year dubbed as ‘Ani-Me Con 6.0’, at the Big Fresno Fairgrounds on Saturday, March 18 and Sunday, March 19. The all ages event boasts an impressive list of over 125 vendors, artists, exhibitors, and fan clubs, along with special guest appearances by WWE Hall of Famer, Rikishi, and YouTube star, D-Piddy. It’ll be a time to embrace the fantastic, to suit up as your favorite scifi/fantasy character and pay tribute, or throw down and test your mettle in a multitude of gaming tournaments. It’ll be a time to showcase local talent with vendors, artists, musicians, cosplayers, and a variety of live entertainment. For the first time, WWE star and Hall of Famer, Rikishi, will be topping out Ani-Me Con’s special guests roster. A member of the famed Anoa’i wrestling family, Rikishi rose to superstardom during the 90s with his trademark bleached blonde hair, hip sunglasses and sumo wrestling gear. Best known for his signature move of The Stink Face, which consisted of cornering his opponent, stand over them, and then proceeding to plant his rear on their faces, Rikishi left the WWE in 2004 as a legend having worked with the likes of Stone Cold Steve Austin, Triple H, Scotty 2 Hotty, and The Rock. out the event such as Nick Palma who doubled as Michaelangelo in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: Secret of the Ooze, and as a stuntman in the 3rd installation of the TMNT franchise. Also making an appearance is YouTube star D-Piddy, who’s best known for his antics dressing as famous fictional characters as shenanigans ensue. Ani-Me Con continues to reign as the largest annual anime/gaming event in the Central Valley. Last year, over 6,000 attendees came out to the 2-day weekend convention and this year proves to host even more. Upgrading to the much larger venue of the Big Fresno Fairgrounds, there will be 2 indoor venues with well over 44,000 square feet of space, a 10,000 square foot patio, and if that wasn’t enough the event will also be using a pavilion, adding 25,000 square feet of outdoor space to the entire convention totaling around 80,000 square feet of event space. The list continues to grow as appearances and performances are added in the days closer to the event. To keep up with the updated schedule, visit Ani-Me.com for all available details about the events as well as ticket prices and various available packages. Between the K-Pop and J-Pop additions, cosplay contests, car show, DJ and live musician performances, special guests, and the fashion show, there’s a lot to forward to.

Family Meux Home Museum Tours Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays 12:00pm-3:00pm 1007 R St. at Tulare Fresno, CA 93721 The Meux Home Museum recaptures the flavor of Victorian Fresno by presenting a middle-class residence furnished in the period, as a representative house museum. A costumed docent will lead you on a one hour tour of this restored urban dwelling of the 1890’s. The architecture of the Meux Home results in a calculated restlessness that makes the home as intriguing today as it was in its own day. The 10 rooms are furnished more or less as a Victorian family might have had them the kitchen has a pie safe and the library; a portrait showing the young Dr. Meux on his way to join the Confederate Army. The Meux home was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 14, 1975. Frogs & Fairytales Saturday, March 11 at 9 AM - 12 PM Fresno Chaffee Zoo Hear ye, hear ye!
