EDITOR’S NOTE Spring is here. It kind of happened overnight didn’t it? We went from having a perpetual onslaught of rain with cold winds to a sudden burst of sunshine and 80 plus degree weather at what felt like a drop of a hat. With a quick shock to the system we’re now enjoying longer days, warmer sunsets, and coastal like breezes. And we almost didn’t notice, either. Growth, change… it all crept up with a subtle quiet grace and then exploded onto the scene with a proverbial mic drop style entrance. I don’t know about you, but life has taken a liking to nature by dealing out some of the same attitude with all things in general. Things here at The Fresno Flyer have a certain rhythm just like any business does, there’s crazy days and slow

days, random ‘what was I just doing?’ days, and fist-bump-because-we-got-somuch-accomplished days. Depending on the season and time of the month, we can just about predict what sort of day we’re going to have every week. But lately, things have gotten a little faster… and there’s been more… more of just about everything. It’s been more phone calls, more emails, more drop-ins to our office, and just an overall increase in demand for our attention that exceeds what we’re used to. Again, just like the rain we’ve received this past winter, it’s a good problem to have. However, without a little support and help from you guys, it makes maximizing all this new attention a little slow and almost impossible.

| FRESNO FLYER |

No, this is not where I ask you to contribute $27 to our cause. What we’re looking for is your support by way of sharing. If you’re reading this paper you must like what we do, and if you’re reading it for the first time, something must have caught your eye to get you reading this far… so share us with someone else who’s never heard of us. Shoot, take this very copy, once you’re done with it and pass it on to someone new. You’d be amazed how far it’ll go in helping us grow our readership. Better yet, if you know a place that would be a great location for carrying our publication, give us a ring or send out an email to give us the head’s up. We’ll reach out to that restaurant, coffee shop, or convenience store and

see if they wouldn’t mind being added to our stops. Sometimes it’s an easy phone call and other times it takes a little more sweet talk, but no matter what we’ll look into every suggestion you throw our way. I’ll never get tired of saying it, without you, there is no ‘us’.

Year-Round Ways to Help Pets and Their Families in Need (BPT) - Approximately 48 million Americans face food insecurity every day, according to Feeding America, a non-profit organization and network of more than 200 food banks. That means they, and their pets, face uncertain access to a sufficient amount of affordable, healthy food. “People who face food insecurity should not have to sacrifice the unconditional love and companionship pets bring to their lives,” says Joann Fuller, U.S. Shelter Engagement Manager for Hill’s Pet Nutrition. “Most food pantries also accept pet food donations. So when you drop off a bag of dog or cat food, you’re helping a family in need take care of their best friend.” Recognizing the need to provide year-round help for families and pets in need, Hill’s has partnered with VCA Charities, the philanthropic arm of VCA Hospitals, to support the organization’s Pet Food Pantry program. The program’s goal is to provide healthy, nutritious pet food to families that could not otherwise afford it. Created in 2010 in Venice, California, the program and participating pantries have served more than 1.5 million meals to pets in 30 locations across the U.S. and Canada. “Many people feel financially tapped out after the holidays, but helping families and pets in need doesn’t have to cost a lot,” Fuller says. Here are six simple ways you can help families in need care for their pets in the New Year: *Have you ever bought a bag or case of pet food your pet wouldn’t eat? Consider donating it to your local food pantry. *Many pantries provide volunteers with printed paper bags to use in gathering food

donations. Ask your local food pantry for some donation bags and drop them off at homes in your neighborhood. Include a note asking for pet food donations and let your neighbors know when you’ll be back to pick up the filled bags and deliver them to the food pantry. *Contact your local homeless shelter to find out what they need to help care for the pets of the homeless people in your community. Donating extra blankets and pet sweaters could help keep those pets warm throughout the winter. *Shelters for victims of domestic violence may need help with temporary housing for pets of families in transition. Contact your local shelter to see if they have a fostering program that needs volunteers. *Seniors who no longer drive may have trouble accessing regular veterinary care for their pets. Check with your local senior center or county’s department of senior services to see if you can volunteer to drive seniors and their pets to veterinary appointments. *Contact your veterinary clinic or others in your area to see if they have programs in place to provide free or reduced-cost medical care to pets in need. You may be able to donate cash or supplies, or simply volunteer your time. “When families are struggling with food insecurity, homelessness, financial hardship or transition, they need the unconditional love of their pets more than ever,” Fuller says. “By helping provide for pets, you’re also doing something good for the humans who love them - and that’s something you can feel good about all year long.”

Why Skip Breakfast?

5 Warm Comfort Foods That Cook in 3 Minutes (BPT) - In spite of the well-documented drawbacks of not eating breakfast, approximately 30 percent of Americans are still failing to fuel themselves in the morning, according to WebMD. And many of those moving through their days with empty stomachs blame a lack of convenience. Earlier this year, the Washington Post pointed to research showing millennials consider even breakfast cereal too inconvenient. And research cited in the Huffington Post indicates Americans 18 and older who miss their first daily meal most frequently blame lack of hunger or an overly busy schedule. However, several studies point to adverse health and cognitive effects from missing breakfast. Consumer Reports indicates eating within two hours

of waking promotes the metabolizing of your glucose or blood sugar all day, in turn boosting your energy. “Don’t skip breakfast,” advises researcher Dr. Leah E. Cahill of Harvard Medical School. “Incorporating many types of healthy foods into your breakfast is an easy way to ensure your meal provides adequate energy and a healthy balance of nutrients.” Experts recommend those in the habit of skipping breakfast instead optimize ultra-easy and ultra-convenient comfort food meals. Most recipes can be made ahead and stored in your fridge for mornings when you’re short of time and energy. A Foodie’s Review by Saeed Alkurdi

K

orean food, those spicy soy and ginger saturated bites of food are a bit of cuisine everyone should experience at least once in their life. And it just so happens that there is an extraordinary place to do so, at Shila, a restaurant with 2 locations, one in Fresno and another in Clovis. Shila specializes in Korean dishes, but more importantly and most uniquely, they specialize in Korean barbecue, buffet style. However, buffet doesn’t quite mean what you’re used to. It’s not standing in some long line, slowly skimming a trough of food competing with strangers to snatch up the best looking dishes before they’re gone. This restaurant is offering up a more customized experience. Walking through their doors, you’ll get the immediate sense that you’ve walked into a traditional sit-down styled eatery. However, if you look carefully you’ll notice that each table comes with its own built-in gas grill tucked right inside the table. This is a place where everyone and anyone can be a grill master, because when it comes to your meat, you’re in charge of exactly how it’s cooked.

Now, the whole experience starts with a wide selection of side dishes ranging from kimchi (fermented vegetables in various spices) done 3 different ways, to spicy radish, japchae (stir fried sweet potato noodles), Korean potato pancake, and potato salad. There are also various dips accompanying your side dishes like soy sauce, sesame and spicy chili paste which are also served at the table. When the server arrives to take my order, I’m told to choose 3 meats from the menu. I’m a big fan of sea food, so I choose the baby octopus, squid, and shrimp. Shortly after taking my order, she returns with a plate containing all the raw ingredients portioned for one person. I strip the shell off the shrimp, dip them in a bit of soy sauce and toss them straight on to the hot stainless steel grate. The shrimp sizzle as they cook right before my eyes. Next, I prepare the baby octopus. I use the pair of scissors provided to me by my server to cut the baby octopus into manageable strips and then throw those on the grill as well. Once I’m convinced the shrimp and baby octopus are fully cooked, I move them to

my plate with a pair of tongs which were also provided. I take bites of each meat which are juicy, fresh, and delicious. The side dishes of kimchi are fantastic. They’re a little spicy, salty, and perfectly pickled. The japchae is well prepared, fresh, and with the right amount of sesame without being overwhelming. I move on to cook the squid, and like the baby octopus, it’s great for dipping into the spicy chili sauce. Soon, I’ve eaten through all my meats, but the meal isn’t over yet. Seeing an empty plate, my server arrives promptly to ask if I’d like to choose more meats to grill. Taking up the opportunity to try a little variety, I choose the bulgogi (fatty marinated beef ) and the boneless beef short rib. I cook a small portion of the bulgogi to try it as-is, but I quickly realize that it needs more soy so I dip the rest of the raw bulgogi meat in the small bowl of soy sauce and place it on the grill. The boneless beef short rib, however, needs nothing. It’s perfect. Fresh, juicy, tender, and with tremendous flavor I make short work of all the strips of this delectable dish.

have vowed to return with an even larger appetite than before, and hopefully you, dear reader, will find your hunger for endless meat at Shila Korean BBQ as well. Once piece of advice…. be sure you know how to prepare and cook raw meat if you plan on eating here, or bring someone who does.

Octopus and shrimp After finishing off the last of the short rib, my server returns once again to ask if I would like to order more meat. Gut buster - the crowd can’t hold it in while Rogue steals the show train and arrived the day after Christmas in 2012 with no place to stay and only $2,000 in his pocket. The only plan Atlas had laid out in front of him was to chase down his dream. So far, he’s laid down some serious groundwork having worked with other up and coming local talent such as Tim Kuckenbaker, Ray Yung, Tabitha Baker, and Terry Michaels just to name a few. Recently, Atlas performed at Visalia’s The Fifth Quarter, a premiere sports bar, for the “Super Bowl Edition” comedy show on February 4th with Andre Covington, best known from the Greg & Dre morning show on Q 97.1. Atlas was also featured in “Wild N Out” an MTV show based on improvisational comedy that pits comics in a series of challenges. But don’t be surprised if you also spot him on some local television channels. As an aspiring actor, Atlas has

appeared on a number of different local programs such as “The Alien” produced by Valley locals, Scott Seargeant & Jake Lomeli, and “Sick Wit It” a comedy show produced by Candles & Wine Productions airing on Comcast 96 and AT&T Uverse 99. Rogue Atlas continues to build upon his growing reputation of a ‘cleancut’ comedian. “My goal is to change the world one laugh at a time, there is no profanity in any of my acts. I want to bring something new to the table,” he explains. Check out the comedian in action live at the Sanger Comedy Club inside the Starlite Dance Academy Saturday, April 1 at 8pm.
