CSU Summer Arts Returns to Fresno State More than 25 events led by world class artists will be held for the general public.

F

resno draws creative minds from around the world with the return of CSU Summer Arts to Fresno State. After a 5 year stay with Cal State Monterey Bay, the educational and celebrated festival of the arts is back for the summer. The intensive 2-week master class program in the visual, performing, literary and media arts are taught by world-class artists who will also be holding performances for the general public. The cinematographer who blew the Death Star in the original “Star Wars”, a Grammy-winning Latin jazz saxophonist, and a Brooklyn-based dance troupe famous for addressing social and political issues will all be calling Fresno home this summer. And the people of Fresno will be able to see their talents on full display. Additional performances include an animation lecture from the creative minds of Nimble Collective, readings from Eileen Myles, recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, Li-Young Lee, author of Behind My Eyes, and Brenda Shaughnessy, author of three books of

poetry, including Human Dark with Sugar. Not to mention, the always free and inspiring student showcases. As students eat, sleep, and breathe the arts, spending anywhere from 8-16 hours a day purely focused on their chosen discipline, more than 25 events will be held for the general public to enjoy. The festival, hosted by Fresno State’s College of Arts and Humanities begins on June 25 and runs until July 22 with scheduled performances and lectures throughout the 2 weeks. Summer Arts is a unique arts summer school and festival of the California State University that works with not only students but also professionals already working in their desired industry. It’s a program designed to take even established skills to the next level. Each course will host culminations at the end of the program to show what they’ve been working towards, which are also open to the public. The Summer Arts public performances give audiences the opportunity to enjoy the best of today’s artistic talent.

The schedule of performances include: · A cinematography lecture from the world-renowned cinematographer, Bruce Logan, best known for blowing up the Death Star in Star Wars. · Latin Jazz concert by GrammyAward Winner Artist, David Sanchez ·Vicki Lewis, best known as Beth on NewsRadio, One-Woman Show · Urban Bush Women, the groundbreaking Brooklyn-based dance troupe, using choreography to address socio-political issues. Video Game Development Lecture with Mattie Brice on July 3

M

attie Brice is a play and games artist, critic, and educator. Starting from media criticism centered on cultural and literary theories, she grappled with the video game and wider tech industry’s problems with diversity, from representation of marginalized peoples in the content of games to their positions of power and visibility in the creative process of making games. Mattie was a part of a DIY movement within video games that created games inspired by personal experience using tools that didn’t require programming. She made experimental games that broadened both the ways games could be used to communicate with other people and the kinds of people who could make them. Her first notable work, Mainichi, has toured museums (Museum of Design Atlanta), art festivals (IndieCade), game conventions (GaymerX), and more, becoming a prominent work discussed in independent games and queer games studies. Balancing theory with practicing art and design, Mattie regularly speaks at conferences and universities internationally on creative practice, outsider art, and political engagement. She became an activist for marginalized creators and players in games and organizes academic conferences (Queerness and Games Conference) and community events (Lost Levels). Mattie currently teaches about play design and art activism at New York City schools (NYU, Parsons) and does grad work in the Integrated Digital Media program at NYU. Her current research and practice interests include using play and performance to engage the public politically, intimate and vulnerable methods of activism, and design processes that account for measuring social impact. She also consults for companies on issues of representation and diversity with regards to interactive media and acts as project manager and organizational strategist for design companies and artists. Mattie is frequently influenced by cooking, performance art, fashion, fan cultures, dating apps, BDSM, the everyday, and cyborgs.

The Nation’s Only Stone Fruit Jubilee Celebrates 10 Years in Clovis!

V

alley farmers celebrate community and fruit with the Organic Stone Fruit Jubilee! Fruits have long been promoted for their health benefits. Ten years ago, when disease and processed food was rampant, organic farmers decided to dial things back to a simpler, healthier time. California is the epicenter of stone fruit exports (7 of the top 10 USA growers are in CA) but little attention is paid to these treasures locally. A dozen or so farmers, and their supporters, decided to change this by volunteering their time to organize the nation’s only festival celebrating stone fruit. The farmers dreamed that fruit, not candy, would connect families as they shared experiences, created memories, and toured a farm while connecting with their food. Farmers who toil to nurture their orchards would meet the consumers, laugh and sigh, and rejoice with smiling eyes as children and adults were enthralled by the variety of tastes they experienced.

Specialty varieties of Peaches, Nectarines, Plums, Pluots, Apricots, and Apriums were rarely found in grocery stores. “One bite and I was in my grandmother’s orchard again” said a newbie at last year’s festival. Free samples of stone fruit adorn the tables where farmers greet and converse with attendees. Consumers purchase bags and fill them with fruit from any of the varieties offered. Aside from eating them fresh, stone fruits are great for cooking! You can grill them, bake them, broil them, stew them and puree them to add a delicious twist to any meal or salad dressing. Creative artisan treats like pies, paletas, lemonade, cultured drinks, beer, pastries, jams, tamales, wood fired pizza, and tacos are a highlight of the jubilee. Local restaurants like La Boulangerie, Casa de Tamales, Mattie’s Wood Fired Pizza, Taste Kitchen and Two Dudes Brewing showcase stone fruit with their unique creations. In the style of an old town festival, local vendors, farmers,

musicians, speakers and retailers educate and entertain attendees. There is a Kid’s Kraft Corner, Pony Rides, Japanese Tea Ceremony, Canning demo, Farm Tours, live music and presentations by Bill Fujimoto and Dr. Renee Kinman. Sponsors for the event include: Kristina’s (Fresno’s oldest organic grocery store), Mary’s Chicken, (pioneers of free range, organic chicken) and Ooooby (Out of our own backyards). Eleven different farmers will showcase their stone fruit including D.E. Boldt Family Farms, Eldon Thiesen Farm, Cardenas Farms and Sweet Home Ranch. When: Saturday June 24 from 5p 8:30p Where: MOA Oasis Gardens, a 10 acre farm at 5790 Indianola Ave, Clovis Cost: Tickets are $5 and kids under 12 are free. Tickets are sold at the gate. Free parking in lot located on Browning Ave.

Mental Health Matters by Cynthia Callaghan Thank you for your mental health questions. I hope to answer as many of them as I can. I heard from a woman who is a college student, mid-twenties, who works full time, who recently suffered the breakup of a 4-year relationship with someone she truly loved. She said she couldn’t stop crying.

Question: How do I make the pain stop?

Answer: When we connect with someone, we do so on a chemical level. It’s their smell, their voice, their face, or even their touch that we memorize and hold inside of us. So when we separate from that person, our whole body responds on a cellular level. And it hurts. Our brain registers this as real pain. Our pain receptor sites are activated and the other sites of our brain shut down for a while. This grief manifests in a poor concentration, a foggy mind, fatigue, crying jags, panic attacks, racing thoughts, poor sleep, and more. Of course, everyone responds differently. And do we ever really forget that person? No. And here is the clincher. This pain has to run its course. That means that when you need to cry, then cry. If you need to talk about it, then talk. Support groups, counseling, creativity, journaling, reading, workbook assignments, walking, spiritual work and anything else that provides calm, lessens stress and gives peace, even if only for a few minutes, really helps with this process. Unfortunately, there are ways to artificially ‘get through’ grief such as intoxication or risky behaviors – as a way to avoid true feelings – but this really only staves off the pain which continues to lurk inside us until we are ready. I read a sad but powerful book about grief written by Joan Didion, titled “A Year of Magical Thinking”(2007) where she described grief as like waves – sometimes they are way off in the distance and things are calm for a while, but then sometimes the waves come crashing in and totally knock us over. The pain lessens and lessens over time. But does it ever really go away? I heard a great quote on a popular Netflix series about this very thing. The character said that the pain of loss doesn’t ever really go away, but that we just get used to how painful it is. I wish you all well. A Foodie’s Review by Saeed Alkurdi

W

hat some call ‘fine dining’ I call ‘food porn’, those dishes that are sophisticated beyond the abilities of a considerably capable and apt home-cook. These dishes are not made just to satisfy the pallet of taste and smell but rather to also delight the eyes as well. Whether it’s perfect beds of starch topped with small mounds of meat surrounded by a savory sauce, an exceptionally deconstructed dessert, or a small bite of something that looks unfamiliar but tastes just like your grandmother’s cooking, food-porn comes in all shapes and sizes. One such place serving up some great hits is The Annex Kitchen in Fresno. Located inside a small, unassuming shopping center is a very sleek, very polished gem waiting to receive its nightly patronage. Offering up Italian inspired dishes that have been shaped by Central Valley grown ingredients, The Annex Kitchen’s menu focuses on house-made pastas, grilled meats, and pizza from their wood burning oven. You can also take advantage of their full bar where they prepare an assortment of house-made cocktails, each more impressive than the next. swing when we arrived and the restaurant was packed nearly to capacity. In fact, the only table available was the community table which holds about ten people. The hostess and waitress were both friendly and quick about seating us and bringing us water and the menu. We decide to start with an appetizer, and while perusing the menu my eyes lock only onto one item; bone marrow. Bone marrow is, in my opinion, the pinnacle of food-porn. When executed properly there is nothing more delicate, savory, meaty and succulent. It is to me what a ’64 Fender Stratocaster with a whammy bar is to a guitar enthusiast. This one marrow in particular proved to be very well executed indeed. It arrived on a cutting board accompanied by grilled bread, which I have to note was a little too charred on one side, garlic, shallots, and a bit of salt. I cut small pieces of the bread and use the spoon to mash in a bit of garlic, I add a small amount of marrow, and sprinkle a few grains of salt on top. The result is, of course, incredible and a wave of euphoria washes over me. This bite and each one after is everything I could want in a savory dish. The bread, the garlic, the marrow, and the salt are all one dive into harmony. If I ever was

The sauce, which I assume is an au jus, intensifies the flavors of the meat, taking it even higher than its impressive start. The garnish on top adds some earthy tones to the dish which are wonderful. Next, I tried the Braised beef rib with polenta tagliatelle which is a dish made of house-made ribbon noodles with a lamb ragu. The noodles are tender, fresh, and perfectly cooked. The ragu has a hearty tomato flavor with the right amount of seasoning to allow the full flavor to blossom, complete with bits of lamb that add a richness to the dish without overpowering it. The bits of parsley and the sprinkle of cheese build onto the complex flavors and earth Bone marrow with grilled bread, garlic, shallots and salt tones of the sauce. Afterward, I tried the pepperoni pizza which was an uninspired disaster. It utterly shattered the wonderful foodporn experience I was having. The crust was bubble-gum chewy… almost akin to shoving several cotton balls in my mouth. The sauce and mozzarella cheese were easily forgettable and very sparse. The pepperoni was about the Tagliatelle with lamb ragu only thing worth noting about the dish because it was the only thing that made to absorb some of the espresso and mop up the pizza, at the very least, presentable and small chunks of ice cream.
