EDITOR’S NOTE New Year’s resolutions are always something of a big deal; we’re all striving to become some better versions of ourselves. We want to lose weight, save money, quit smoking, live healthier - and all of those are noteworthy things that definitely warrant our attention - but what about taking the focus off ourselves and putting it towards others who could use our help? For this issue, we wanted to shine the spotlight on the organizations who make helping others their life’s work. The idea came about after hours of thinking how we wanted to tackle our ‘New Year’s’ edition, combing through ways to talk about fitness, going after the job you want, making more time for enjoying life or whatever it is that most people make resolutions for. And it felt like an ‘AHA!’ moment as if to say “Holy crap, why haven’t we thought of that before?” I have to admit that donating to a charity or volunteering my time has never made it onto any list of resolutions. Usually, I’m not in any position to afford it, which is the most significant reason why it never really crosses my mind. Besides, it’s not exactly a sexy idea - when you finally get some extra cash or free time on your hands, the first thought isn’t to give it away but to spend it on yourself or your family. And why not? You work hard, doing overtime, and

sometimes taking on extra days only to come home to face an endless mountain of laundry, dishes, and bills. You end the day more exhausted than the day before and some mornings, it feels like the cycle will never end. So, when you finally get a break and life seems to be throwing you lemons, the first instinct is to reap the benefits yourself. And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. However, there are a lot of us in the same boat and a lot more of us in a worse boat... in fact, it’s not even a boat, more like a raft tied together from the wreckage of a boat. Encouraging our readers to try thinking beyond themselves by donating their time or money is more so about people-helpingpeople and sticking together rather than anything else. With the recent tax bill reform, it feels like no one is looking out for the lower and middle working class. Now, more than ever is the time that we recognize the need to look out for one another. So, perhaps instead of looking forward to spending that hard earned cash on the new iPhone, Xbox, or PlayStation, or spending that extra day off at a BBQ enjoying one too many drinks, we think about those who could use some help. Even if it’s just once, one donation or one afternoon of our time - it might just make a world of difference for someone.

harging through the holidays and finally making it out to the other side means we can finally take a breath and put our focus onto the new year ahead. But what does that mean, exactly? For each of us, that path looks a little different. There might be some similarities as we’ll all be looking for new ways to improve ourselves and the life we provide for our families in some way, but what we choose will ultimately be a culmination of experiences we survived throughout 2017. It goes without saying that the nation has been hit with some unbelievable changes and more tragedies than we’d care to admit over the last year. The repeal of DACA and Net Neutrality, the natural disasters that seemed to hit in relentless stride, shootings, violent treatment of protesters… the list goes on. The world could use a little peace, and so could we. But pushing the entire planet into a monumental achievement like world peace is a little unlikely, instead, bringing some harmony into our own lives is a more feasible task. But what if we could provide that sort of healing transformation for someone else? Every year, we put the focus on ourselves or our immediate family, but if 2017 was proof of anything it was that we all need each other. Perhaps this year would be a good time to think about what we can do for one another, rather than only what we can do for ourselves. Make it a personal challenge to connect with one cause, whether it’s donating your time, your efforts, or even some blood – look towards 2018 with a goal to uplift communities, both man and animal-kind. HOMELESS IN FRESNO PROJECTS

magine, if you will, that you are in a manic state completely unable to cope with reality. Suddenly, you’re grabbed, forcefully, by people you’ve never met and thrown into a small room with no windows. The doors are locked, and someone else begins to strip you naked, beating you if you protest. This is a short glimpse into the treatment of those committed to an asylum because they suffered from a psychological illness in 1840s America. Modern science has yielded groundbreaking discoveries in understanding mental illness, however, despite this significant improvement, the treatment and care for mentally ill patients still resemble the horrors of the 1840s. The homeless population is the most neglected community in America, and by analyzing that neglect, we can see just how ineffective our treatment is concerning mental health. Rather than demonizing the poor, let’s, instead, take a more open-minded approach. Of the data collected so far, numbers show that 30% of individuals who are chronically homeless could potentially be diagnosed with a mental illness. These numbers tell us homelessness is not merely caused by laziness or unwillingness to work but from an untreated psychological disorder or trauma of some kind. These individuals,

who are forced to live on the streets through the hottest summers and depths of freezing winters not only suffer immensely from their environment but also fight a possibly more intolerable battle within their minds. Our society has yet to build adequate structures of support for this community. It’s important to take an objective stance and observe how the methods of the 1840s still, frustratingly, correlate to the institutions of today. Often, when a homeless person has a mental health crisis, it is left to a police officer with little or no training in mental health to handle the situation. Brute force and weapons are often used, and 20% of the time the situation ends with officer-involved fatalities. Rather than being placed in an asylum, the physiologically struggling homeless are thrown in jail. This sterile, institutionalized environment which consists of caging people suffering an emotional and mental crisis has yet to provide any rehabilitation success rates. That is reason enough to call for an end to these inhumane practices which only bring forth a horrendous way of affirming any preexisting conditions of mental illness. Homeless people who are in need of support are too often physically assaulted first and then thrown into a place which only serves

to make their conditions infinitely worse. If we are to have any hope as to resolving this issue, we need to turn away from this system that is still, surprisingly, overwhelmingly supported. Some homeless, those lucky enough not to be jailed, have access to county services where meetings are available with an intern psychologist. This system sounds like a good solution but is, in reality, entirely unhelpful. Take, for example, the stark differences between public services offered by the county and that which is provided by a private clinic. The county office appears subhuman by comparison in the treatment and respect shown to its patients. When checking in, the individual is given a number and told to sit with 30-50 other people who are all on the bell curve of hysteria. In a private clinic, the individual is met with tea, magazines, inspirational pictures, and comfortable chairs with - at most - three to five others sharing the room. It is this kind of treatment from a private clinic that a mentally unstable person needs to receive to feel supported in their healing journey. Whether homeless or living in poverty, the options for getting help with mental illness are severely limited. It ranges from physical altercations with the police,

Often, if a person attempts to hang their clothes to dry, they’re taken down by the police, and over time, the wet clothes will begin to smell, and the homeless have no choice but to throw them away. Hooded sweatshirts became the answer due to their flexibility and comfort. Ponchos are included with every hoodie to help keep it dry. Donations of ponchos are always welcome, but HIF wants people to bear in mind that the ponchos from places like the Dollar Tree only last through a single rain. 1 large lemon zested and juiced

In a bowl, mix together lemon juice, zest, olive oil, chopped garlic, paprika, oregano, salt and pepper. Add chicken drumsticks and toss to coat evenly. Cover bowl with plastic wrap and place in refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. When ready to cook, let chicken come to room temperature for about 20 minutes.

Directions: Shop the freezer section: When you’re in a time pinch, frozen foods have many offerings that set a good foundation for any home-cooked meal, Burns says. On top of all that, fruits and veggies are flash-frozen, which locks the nutrients in place.

Bake uncovered for 20 minutes. Flip chicken pieces and cook another 10 minutes until chicken reaches 165 degrees and is no longer pink. Make sauce in a small bowl by whisking together the mustard and honey. Add water as needed for a workable consistency. With a small pastry brush, brush sauce over chicken and broil 5 minutes until bubbly. Place chicken pieces on a serving platter and sprinkle minced parsley over all.
