EDITOR’S NOTE Transformation. It’s the buzzword to the start of any new year, and rightfully so, but what about the rest of the year? Are we confined only to the world of resolutions when we choose to use such a powerful word? I would hope not, but life would prove otherwise. Transformations, traditionally, are for New Year resolutions and the budding youth of society. It should be the term for anyone at any point in his or her life who chooses to step into the unknown for a better future. We’ve somehow built a structure that great realization is only for the earlymid twenty-somethings – this is the age we understand ourselves and solidify our future both personally and professionally – because once we hit 30, we should have it all figured out. Just a note to all you twentysomethings, it almost never works out that way, you’re always in a state of “figuring it out.” But if you do have it figured out in your twenties, consider yourself immensely blessed. Life is in perpetual motion, no? So why can’t that include us, regardless of age? Settling is for the birds. If you’re not happy, change it, change something, and work your ass off to that new and improved ‘you’ that you’ve been dreaming of. Sure, it’s easier said than done, but if it were easy then no one would ever change a thing, would they? Transformation can be just about anything: a new job, a career change, deciding

to go back to school or start for the first time, choosing to take charge of your health, learning a new sport, etc., the list goes on. And although any style of change will be a long, arduous process, the most challenging part of it all is deciding to take the first step. Extraordinary change is terrifying because we must make that journey alone. We can have support, those who champion our efforts, but each progression towards success is made from our individual, tenacious will. And it all comes down to one universal question, “How bad do you want it?” How each person chooses to answer it is what defines his or her future. The Publisher and I started this issue by giving it a ‘health and wellness’ theme, but the deeper I considered what ‘wellness’ really meant the more I realized it was so much more than just fitness and maintaining a balanced diet. Being ‘well’ means feeling ‘well’ … but that is such a subjective term; it means something different to each of us. Generally speaking, it really just means being happy. However, sometimes we know what that means, other times we don’t, and we have to jump out of our comfort zones to figure out what that is. Wherever you are in your journey, whether you’ve already started or you’re still finding your first step, don’t give up – you got this! Let your resolution be discovering your version of ‘wellness’ regardless of age or time of year; we’re rooting for you.

DREAM MAKERS // SPOTLIGHT

Dream Makers Is Here to Help You Exceed Expectations by Lisa Talley | lisa@fresnoflyer.com

D

ream Makers, a bold name for a business to choose, but for the local life-long athlete and Head Coach to the Yosemite Middle School wrestling team, it was perfect. Charles Lewis decided to make it his business to help others achieve their dreams. Through the avenue of sports, Dream Makers puts the focus on fitness, performance, and skill training. With their own in-house batting cage, Lewis can concentrate training sessions on hitting, fielding, and pitching. However, baseball isn’t the only sport Dream Makers works with, in fact, they’ll work with not only every sport, but with all skill levels, ages, and set goals made by the athlete. A lifetime of sports has given the owner, Charles Lewis, the extensive experience necessary to take on such a feat. Lewis held the title of Head Coach of Fresno Pacific’s inaugural club baseball season in 2003, played professionally in Nicaragua and Mexico as well as playing at the collegiate level for Cal Poly Pomona, Patten, California Christian, Bethany, and Fresno Pacific. Lewis also touts 20 years of semi-professional baseball experience as a player. Growing up, Lewis won a State Championship track at the age of seven in the nine-year-old age bracket. He also

picked up three years as a varsity basketball player, four years of varsity baseball, and one year of varsity football for St. Elizabeth High School. F o r the past several years, the Dream Makers owner has been leading teams as the Head Coach for Baird Middle School wrestling from 2013 - 14, Head Coach for Yosemite Middle School wrestling since 2015, Assistant Baseball Coach (since 2011) and Assistant Softball Coach (since 2015) for Baird. Sports, athleticism, these have been a lifetime of dedication for Lewis and Dream Makers is where he’ll be able to share all the experience and knowledge that he’s gained as a young player, a collegiate player, and as a coach to help build stronger athletes for the future. And not just their skills in the field, but also in their careers. Dream Makers was an idea inspired by a happenstance of advice Lewis gave during his tenure coaching the Babe

Ruth team in Oakland, CA around ’95. “I had a conversation with Johnny Ash, a scholar-athlete at Bishop O’ Dowd High School. I asked him what college he planned to attend and he looked at me with a blank stare and shrugged. I knew his father had been a catcher at Cal Berkley, but I said ‘You should go to Stanford.’ He didn’t say anything, but the following year his father informed me that he was offered a scholarship to Stanford and he was undecided. I had not talked to him since. After I had moved to Fresno to finish school myself, I was watching the College World Series where Stanford was playing, and the announcer was doting on the freshman class… and Johnny Ash walked across my

television. My heart stopped. I saw that nudge I gave had made a difference in his life,” Lewis shared. It had occurred to Charles then that the same sort of nudge was missing from his life and in that moment, he was determined for his son to never miss out on the opportunity. (currently, Charles Roberto Lewis Jr. has received recruiting interest from Stanford and Santa Clara University for baseball) Dream Makers provides athletes of all ages an opportunity to receive guidance, coaching, and the proverbial nudge in taking their potential careers to the next level. “We know that with hard work comes success, mentally, physically, and spiritually. Working with Dream Makers, we lay down the foundation of T.E.A.M. Together Everyone Achieves More,” shares Lewis. Currently, the Fresno-based training facility offers baseball camps, performance training boot camps that includes one hour of performance training and a half hour of skill work. Plans include introducing a Travel Baseball, and Softball named The Dream Team later this year. For more information about programs and utilizing the in-house batting cage, Dream Makers can be reached at 559-432-000 or via email at dreammakersfresno@outlook.com

New Ways to Improve the Way You Feel

(StatePoint) Nearly 25 million Americans experience daily physical discomfort, according to the National Institutes of Health, which can affect mood, mobility and quality of life. While the reasons for discomfort vary, the way it is experienced doesn’t -- peripheral nerves are responsible for delivering sensory information, such as itch, temperature change and physical pressure to the brain. With this in mind, experts are identifying new ways to promote nerve health and comfort by inhibiting inflammatory compounds in nerve cells, and at the same time, encouraging healthy neurotransmitter levels in the brain. They have discovered that a fatty acid called palmitoylethanolamide (PEA), produced naturally by the body as part of a healthy inflammatory and immune response, inhibits the secretion of inflammatory compounds from mast cells, a type of white blood cell. As we age, our number of mast cells decreases, causing our remaining mast cells to work harder. That can make them overly sensitive, activating inflammatory processes linked to nerve discomfort. “By inhibiting inflammatory compounds released by mast cells, PEA promotes the body’s natural response to uncomfortable nerve stimuli at the cellular level,” says Michael A. Smith, M.D., senior health scientist and spokesperson for Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based Life Extension. Smith points out that it is now possible to take PEA in supplement form. One option is Life Extension’s ComfortMAX, a dual-action nerve support supplement which contains both PEA as well as Honokiol, a naturally occurring lignan compound derived from magnolia that is shown to support “calming” receptors in the brain, known as GABA receptors, which affect the way the brain perceives discomfort. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration and these products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease, however, many experts believe they can be effective in pain management. More information can be found at www.lecomfortmax.com. “It’s only natural to think topically or locally when we wish to inhibit discomfort. However, taking in the bigger picture could mean more effective relief,” says Dr. Smith.

SPOTLIGHT \\ LE REVE

Le Reve Dance Academy

F

resno welcomed new business, Le Reve Dance Academy (LRDA), to the fold of locally owned and operated enterprises on January of this year. The diverse dance academy offers various styles of instruction including jazz, ballet, hip-hop, tap, cheer, pre-primary, adult, and etiquette classes. Each of the courses offered, students can expect to learn skills that are, of course, pertinent to dance such as turns, leaps, and kicks, while also acquiring those essential to daily life like flexibility, agility, confidence, rhythm, and fine/gross motor skills. The passion and love Le Reve possesses for dance is what they hope to also instill in those who choose to learn with them. The instructional team includes teachers who each specialize in different styles of dance; A.J. La Cuesta (Hip Hop), Tashay Woods (Jazz, Contemporary, and Modern), Lauren Fifer (Ballet) and owner, Maria Hernandez (Tap, Jazz, and Etiquette). Together, they bring their talents to help the students grow into well-rounded, knowledgeable dancers. Le Reve got its name from the French term “Le Reve” which translates to “The Dream” in English. Owner and founder, Maria Hernandez, has always had the dream of one day opening her own dance studio. Studying for years at Cynthia Merrill’s dance academy, Hernandez became well versed in Jazz, Ballet, Lyrical, Broadway, Tap, and even took Cotillion and etiquette courses during her time there. However, it wasn’t

Help Yourself by Helping Others: Make a Commitment to Volunteer

(BPT) - Did you know that 35,000 hours of volunteering is the equivalent of working 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year with no days off for 17 years? For American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) member Sarah Brooks, who was recently recognized for volunteering more than 35,000 hours in service to military veterans, those are hours spent offering fellowship, kindness and attention to those who made sacrifices for our freedom. Brooks’ decades-long dedication to the military com-

munity has helped hundreds of veterans in the Grand Rapids, Michigan, area. The veterans she serves have become her family, her lifeline and a blessing she never thought she would receive. How did the 91-year-old come to dedicate her life to serving others? “It starts with a hello,” Brooks said. Brooks shares her time between a veterans home, ALA-sponsored events and a veterans rehabilitation center. “A hello can be the bridge to a great interaction and a

until she was introducing the art of dance to her daughters that she found a piece to the puzzle of Le Reve’s future. Tashay Woods, the instructor who led private classes at the studio where Hernandez brought her daughters, also had a dream to branch off into her own dance studio practice. Woods started competition dance at the age of 9, she studied Ballet, Jazz, Lyrical, Tumbling, and Cheer. During her college years, she participated in Fresno City College’s dance program while she completed her AA degree. As a student, Woods choreographed two pieces for the spring and fall dance productions. In September of 2017, she received her Certified personal Trainer certificate with NASM Fitness. Late last year, Hernandez and Woods made the decision to look for a location in which to officially launch Le Reve Dance Academy. And by January, LRDA was in full swing, hosting its first annual Free Dance Day which gave the community the opportunity to try out the academy’s style of teach-

ers and instruction at no cost. Both Woods and Hernandez call the event a great success “full of laughs, sweat, and lots of hard work from all the students, teachers, and staff.” Le Reve would like to thank everyone who was in attendance and encourages anyone who missed the event to come by and “try out our style of instruction. It is surely different from the rest!” Follow Le Reve Dance Academy on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram @lerevedanceacademy to stay up to date on the latest news and events. wonderful memory. In my 59 years of volunteering, I can say I don’t have a favorite memory from my volunteer efforts because every day is a new and beautiful experience,” Brooks said. People can give back in many ways, such as donating material items like canned goods and clothes or offering financial support. But giving time is one of the most unselfish actions we can perform. By becoming personally involved with others through volunteering, we have the opportunity to deliver simple acts of kindness that can help others find healing, support and a new beginning. In addition, volunteering has real benefits for the volunteer. It can provide a sense of fulfillment that benefits our minds and bodies. Studies have shown that people who volunteer live longer, healthier and happier lives. “When I returned home from military service in my early 20s,” said Victoria Pridemore, a former truck driver, battalion paralegal and division chief paralegal in the U.S. Army, “I wasn’t sure how I could serve my community since I didn’t have the means to donate monetary gifts to any organization. I realized I could have an impact on my community just through my actions and donating my time.” In 2012, Pridemore founded ALA Unit 1 in Washington, D.C., to help serve veterans and families in that

area. Now serving as president of the American Legion Auxiliary unit, Pridemore, 33, works with local community organizations to plan monthly volunteer events for ALA members and non-members in the area. Their local activities range from cleaning the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall to holding a holiday drive for donations for inpatient veterans to send gifts to their family members. In 2016, ALA Unit 1 helped almost 200 veterans in the D.C. area. While Sarah Brooks recently received a lifetime achievement award from the ALA for her 59-year commitment to service, Pridemore reminds us that there is no “small” act of kindness and service. “Every give-back moment is an opportunity to have a real impact,” she said. “A touch, a smile, just a brief conversation can make a difference in someone’s day. “And, when a group of people do come together for a day of real service, it’s so fulfilling,” Pridemore said. “That is why I believe so strongly in the ALA’s mission ‘In the spirit of Service Not Self.’” Pridemore and Brooks agree that all it takes is a few hours and a heartfelt commitment to caring to help change someone’s life. To learn how to get involved and volunteer, visit www.ALAforVeterans.org.

Writing is thought to boost your memory as note taking by hand requires different cognitive processes than typing. For example, if in a lecture you are writing notes, you have to listen carefully to what the speaker has said as it is impossible to write down every word. Therefore through this process, you are listening, digesting and summarizing the information more effectively than someone who is just typing words into a laptop.

EAT, DRINK, and crunchy On-the-Go Potatoes for a quick savory snack for mid-hike or midbike that’s ready in just about 30 minutes. Gearing up for a busy week? On-the-Go Potatoes Yield: 8 servings (about 5 potatoes per serving) Ingredients:

Start the Year Strong with This High-Performance Vegetable (BPT) - Chasing a place on the podium isn’t possible without the proper fuel for your body. Whether you’re going for the gold or just passing the pigskin in honor of the big game, athletes and amateurs alike need the right combination of nutrients to take on their training, and sports nutritionists across the nation are recommending one vegetable in particular to get them there - potatoes! Here’s why:

* Carbohydrate - Potatoes are a nu-

trient-dense vegetable with 26 grams of quality carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are important for optimal physical and mental performance as the primary fuel for your brain and a key source of energy for muscles. And, because your body’s own stores of carbohydrates are limited and may be depleted - even in a single session of intense and/or prolonged exercise - it’s important to replenish them.

* Potassium - Did you know a medium-sized potato with the skin has more potassium than a medium-sized banana? A medium (5.2 ounce) skin-on potato contains 620 mg of potassium, an important electrolyte that aids in muscle, cardiovascular and nervous system function. The 2015 Dietary Guidelines mention potassium as an under-consumed nutrient of concern,

and recommend consuming foods with high levels of potassium such as white potatoes. * Energy - Potatoes are more energy-packed than any other popular vegetable. Adequate energy intake supports optimal body functions and it’s critical to take in the appropriate number of calories to match the demands of the day, especially while training. Partial to pasta or rice? With as much - if not more - of several essential vitamins and minerals found in spaghetti, brown rice or whole wheat bread, potatoes are a smart addition to your other favorite performance foods (compared on a per-serving basis). What’s more, a medium Russet potato with the skin has more vitamin C and potassium than a medium sweet potato. There is a medal-worthy potato option to fit your tastes (and schedule) no matter what sport is your specialty. Leslie Bonci, registered dietitian and nutrition consultant for the Kansas City Chiefs and the WNBA, says, “I love potatoes for their versatility, affordability and applicability to all types of culinary options. The carbohydrate, fiber and potassium make them a great choice for workouts and offer a change of pace and taste from other sports-focused foods.” She created a recipe for portable
