EDITOR’S NOTE 2018 is off to a rocky start, isn’t it? We’ve woken up to yet another mass shooting, and everywhere we turn the conversation is alight with either ‘gun reform’ or meme after meme discrediting it. I know what you’re wondering. Am I going to start on a tirade about one or the other? No. The thing that has me rattled about all of it is the continuing theme of people not listening to each other - this goes to both pro-gun and pro-reform. Sometimes, people see a hint of some political stance in direct opposition and *poof* instant fingers in ears and no one’s listening anymore. If you believe that we, in this country, lack proper gun education and training, then get active about putting the right plans into motion. If you’re worried that we, as a society, ignore the needs of the mentally ill, then start having more conversations about it - get involved in local policy. If you honestly believe we, in this country, make it entirely too easy to purchase automatic weapons, then talk to your representatives. Either way, it’s a step in the right direction without feeling like you’re only banging your head against the wall when engaging in arguments with your peers - or anyone for that matter - on social

media. As Americans, we have a long history and deeply embedded culture with our guns - this needs much understanding before trying to ask us to relook at the laws surrounding gun ownership - it’s going to take patience and persistence to get us to talk about it calmly. But we can’t give up on it. And for proud, responsible guntoting citizens - if your brothers and sisters, out of a genuine love for the safety of their country’s people, feel the need to discuss the topic of gun control passionately then please, listen to them. It’s an opportunity for you to help educate and share the knowledge you’ve gained from your training. But most importantly, you’ll also need to be open. Remember, this conversation is rooted in a need to keep people safe. And there’s nothing wrong with wanting to protect each other. The art of debate isn’t about winning or losing, but about finding the most logical answer to a complicated subject. Fact is, no matter how passionate we may be on the issue, it’s a conversation that will never go away - so instead of going in perpetual circles, maybe now is the time to find a reasonable solution.

LENDING A HAND and

Improving Homes Habitat for Humanity Fresno County provides programs to help those in need, in beautifying their homes and neighborhoods.

H

ome is certainly where the heart is, as many home-owners and renters alike pour all of their heart into making their residences as warm, comforting, and inviting as possible. Sometimes, this is as simple as providing a hot, home-cooked meal for loved ones and other times, it’s a little more complicated than that. Turning a house into a home can become a rather hefty endeavor full of painting, sometimes a little light construction (or heavy, depending on how daring you are) and often, hauling around furniture of various sizes and shapes. For many, this is a challenge met enthusiastically - often leaping ahead at full speed - but for some, it lives as more of wishful thinking rather than total possibility. Upkeep can be a difficult task when there’s no one to help you, and even more difficult if the cost of such repair or revitalization is way beyond your income. Often, certain neighborhoods and homes can fall behind simply because assistance isn’t available. Fortunately, one local

organization has made it their business to provide such assistance for homeowners in the Fresno County area.

Habitat for Humanity Senior Paint Program Habitat for Humanity Fresno County is a firm believer that safe and affordable housing is not only new construction but also preservation of existing housing stock. In the effort to accomplish that, Habitat for Humanity Fresno County Neighborhood Revitalization team will go into neighborhoods of city of Fresno in search of seniors that are in need to repaint their homes. Habitat for Humanity Fresno County Senior Paint program aims at helping income eligible seniors continue to live independently in their own homes, but more importantly enjoy the complete exterior makeover which will enrich their lives and positively affect the neighborhoods.

The program will bring hundreds of volunteers from local businesses, churches, companies and schools to mask, prime, and paint over 50 homes in the City of Fresno at no cost to the homeowner. In addition, Habitat for Humanity Fresno County Neighborhood Revitalization Team will offer senior residents an Acts of Kindness which is a minor beautification project as yard clean up, fence painting or minor trash removal. To qualify for the Senior Paint Program, homeowners must: own and occupy a single-family home built after 1978, be 62 years of age or older and must meet income requirements of 80 percent of Fresno Area median income, as established by HUD. If you have a neighbor, friend, or family member who could benefit from this program, or if you yourself are an eligible homeowner, call office at 559-237-4102 ext. 102 or email marina@habitatfresno. org for further information or to request an application. 6 Home Décor Trends to Make a Style Statement Spring into Lawn and Garden Care

(Family Features) If cooler weather has you longing for sunny days outdoors, take heart. Once spring rolls around, you can safely begin the annual cleanup to prepare your yard for months of warm-weather enjoyment. Start by evaluating your lawn. Look for bald spots where grass has grown sparsely and needs reseeding, or uneven areas that may need to be filled and leveled. Before you take steps to correct any problems, you’ll need a clean slate. Clear the yard of any leaves, rocks or sticks that may have accumulated then cut the grass as short as you can. Use a thatching rake to remove dead roots and grass. Break up the soil in bare spots to create an environment that will be hospitable to new seed. Add lawn soil to level the surface. You’ll also need to apply an herbicide to treat weed-infested areas. Allow the weed killer to work for about a week then rake again to remove dead weeds. Then you’re ready to over-seed or spot seed, depending on your lawn’s needs. Your climate will determine the best grass variety for your yard. Be sure to select and apply a fertilizer that is consistent with your grass type and water thoroughly to promote deep root growth, which can help your lawn withstand extreme conditions as temperatures rise. Your lawn isn’t the only part of your yard that needs attention during the spring months, though. Your garden and flower beds may need some care before they, too, are ready to burst with new bounty and color. Begin by clearing your garden and beds of any debris like leaves and other matter that piled up during months of neglect. Gently turn the soil and work in fresh fertilizer. Before your plants and flowers are in full-growth mode is the ideal time to make repairs. Check edging for any damage, replace rotted woodwork and complete any other maintenance tasks. As for the plants, prune before the first buds sprout to minimize stress. You can also start indoor seeds, and early spring is the time to divide perennials and plant some hardier vegetables, such as onions and potatoes. The warmer months may still seem far away, but getting some of your lawn and garden care underway now can make those warmer, sunny days feel closer in no time. Find more seasonal tips for prepping your yard at eLivingToday.com.

(StatePoint) Is your home décor starting to feel a bit stale? Spruce up your interiors with some of the hottest home design trends for 2018 -- from customized cozy to natural textures to retro touches. Here are some stylish ways to incorporate new trends, from one of the nation’s most sought-after celebrity interior designers, Taniya Nayak. 1. Create an Oasis: Make your home a tropical escape all year long. Add floral or banana leaf accents to form a staycation-worthy “athome paradise” no matter the temperature. Nayak suggests pairing pops of metallic gold with plush greens and crisp white to build a look that is sophisticated, yet fun and exotic. 2. Keep it Simple: In 2018, Nayak encourages DIYers to “go big or go home…in the simplest way imaginable.” An easy way to accomplish this is to paint your baseboards, trim or window mullions a dramatic contrasting color, like black against a white wall, for an effortless, yet powerful effect. And when it comes to achieving clean, sharp paint lines, one of Nayak’s vital, go-to tools is a premium painter’s tape, like FrogTape brand painter’s tape that delivers the sharpest paint lines possible. Treated with patented PaintBlock Technology, FrogTape is a fool-proof way to get professional-looking results and eliminate the need for touch-ups. 3. Incorporate Natural Touches: This trend is all about nature’s textures -- think wood grain, geodes or ocean waves. One way to incorporate this look is to combine earthy tones like browns, beiges and deep blues with vibrant neon colors to generate the effect of the northern lights around the home. 4. Get Back to the Future: Give what’s old a modern, futuristic update to achieve this trend. Try painting a vintage chair with a pop

of color, like the Sherwin-Williams 2018 color of the year, Oceanside, a combination of rich blue with jewel-toned green. This creates an eye-catching masterpiece that seamlessly integrates into both retro and modern home décor. Introducing bright colors to antiques produces a beautiful new spin on a classic look. 5. Design it with Love: What’s “in” in home design this year? Creating warm and cozy spaces that are customized just for you. This is the true essence of DIY. Painting an accent wall in a pastel color, like lavender, will set a relaxed and comforting tone in the room. From there, add personal pieces like a soft woven blanket, a macramé wall hanging or ivory plates on a wall to transform any room

to “your” room. 6. Embrace New England Prep: This style embraces the timeless combination of crisp white linens and navy blues, but what really gives a room an authentic New England vibe is the addition of camel-colored leather décor accents. Nayak recommends adding monogrammed pillows to a leather accent chair, or whitewashing your brick fireplace to create a look that never goes out of style. Visit FrogTape.com for more trend information and inspiration. Get started on your home projects now so you can enjoy your refreshed décor all year long.

The 17th Annual Rogue Festival Fresno’s Completely Uncensored Performing Arts Event, Returns March 1-10, 2018

T

he 2018 Rogue Festival features 200 performances by 48 performing groups in 10 Tower District venues in Fresno’s largest, craziest and most courageous performing arts festival The Rogue Festival, Fresno’s completely uncensored theater and performing arts festival, will return to the Tower District March 1-10. This year’s 17th annual Rogue Festival will present over 200 separate performances of theater, music, dance, comedy, spoken word and magic from 48 performing groups in 10 different venues. But the most important thing about the Rogue isn’t its size or variety, but it’s freedom for both performers and audience, says Rogue Festival executive director Heather Parish. “The Rogue Festival is built on a principle that is sacred to us — that there should be no censor, no curator, no selection committee standing between the artist and the audience. We don’t choose who can or cannot participate in the Rogue. We don’t select or reject performers. There are no restrictions on what performers can say or do. For the audience, this is the one event in the San Joaquin Valley where you can see raw, uncensored, unmediated performance — and only the audience gets to say what’s good or what’s bad.” While previous Rogue Festivals accepted all applications on a first-come, first-serve basis, this is the first year that the Rogue Festival has held a lottery to allocate performing slots. “We have been forced to go to a lottery application process because the Rogue has been simply too successful,” said Parish. “Last year we filled all our available slots within 12 minutes of opening online applications, and our server literally crashed. This year we accepted all applications over one week, and we received 75 applications. To give all those applicants an equal chance at performing, we did a random lottery to select who would be in this year’s festival.” New to the Rogue this year is the “Artists’ Underground” program, which allows performers to create their own venues in commercial spaces and backyards. “The Rogue has always been about encouraging artists to be entrepreneurs, to create their own opportunities and control their own box office,” said Parish. “Since we always have more artists than we can accommodate, this year we’re letting anyone

who can find a space to perform be a part of Rogue.” In its 17th year, the Rogue Festival is now one of the oldest festivals of its kind in the United States and has built a nationwide reputation for Fresno as a city that celebrates the arts. “Fresnans who attend the Rogue don’t always know this, but artists all around the country talk about the Rogue Festival as a ‘must-do’ event, because of the tremendous support that the Fresno community gives Rogue performers,” said Parish. “Performers love coming to Fresno because of the way they are welcomed by the audience, Rogue volunteers and local performers. Rogue performers immediately feel they are part of our community, and they always want to come back.”

ABOUT THE ROGUE FESTIVAL The Rogue Festival is one of the oldest and best respected Fringe Festivals in the western United States and part of a worldwide movement of Fringe theater festivals around the world, celebrating the independent artist rather than established arts institutions. The Rogue is Fresno’s home for edgy, uncensored, avant-garde performances

| FRESNO FLYER |

you won’t see anywhere else. Many of the acts in the Rogue are original works that are written and performed for the first time by the artists performing them, so Rogue audiences enjoy art they’ll never experience anywhere else. Audiences at the Rogue Festival will have their pick of an incredible variety of entertainment, with shows happening simultaneously at eight different Tower District venues. Rogue Festival performances are presented in rapid rotation — no show is longer than one hour, and intermissions between shows are only a half-hour. Most Rogue shows cost $12 or less, so the ideal way to experience the Rogue is to see multiple shows during every day of the festival. The mission of the Rogue Festival is to eliminate all barriers between the independent artist and the audience. The Rogue is a non-curated festival, meaning that Rogue Festival staff do not select the acts that perform at the Rogue. All applications to perform in the Rogue Festival are accepted on a first-come, firstserved basis. No one controls what’s in the Rogue, so it is a true First Amendment zone — you can see the greatest show ever, you can see the worst show ever, and you will definitely see shows that will challenge your comfort zone. The Rogue Festival is also a nonjuried festival, meaning that no prizes are given and there is no judging of content. The audience decides for itself what it likes and doesn’t like, so the Rogue Festival encourages word-of-mouth and online reviews from audience members. The other mission of the Rogue Festival is to eliminate barriers between independent artists and their earnings. One hundred percent of all ticket sales goes directly to performers. The Rogue Festival, a registered 501(c)(3) organization, supports itself through sales of Festival wristbands, individual contributions, and sponsorships. Tickets to Rogue Festival performances can be purchased online in advance or at the door starting 30 minutes before each performance. The Rogue Festival draws 3,000 audience members into the Tower District, most of whom combine their Rogueing with dining, drinking and shopping at Tower District businesses, creating a sizable contribution to the local economy.

his new play, by American ex-pat and Hong-Kong resident, Heather RoseChase, is debuting and workshopping at Rogue Festival 2018. Producer/Director Paula Balekian, back on the Fresno arts scene after 30 years teaching and directing on the Central Coast, along with local actors/artists Kate McKnight and Britt Monahan are collaborating on their first Rogue production together as part of newly formed Playhouse Productions. “Babel” (no connection to the film of the same name) brings us face to face with a world where the line between government and corporate America is so blurred that “you can’t tell a senator from a CEO.” Consolation of power and centralized control of communication technology has brought some to the breaking point. “Babel” examines the conflict between our desire for personal gratification and our larger social freedoms. Two women (played by McKnight and Monahan) find themselves captive and at odds in a life or death situation where communication and trust have been shattered. What are they willing to let go of to fight for their beliefs?

EATS and snacks and only eating kale and whole grains. That’s far from the truth. Many of the best cuts of meat are also ideal for a hearthealthy diet and can satisfy the most ardent carnivore. Pork tenderloin, skinless chicken and turkey breasts are naturally lean, while fatty fish, like salmon, trout and tuna, are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids. As far as snacks go, it’s really just a matter of embracing things like fresh fruit with low-fat yogurt, vegetables and hummus, or a savory mix of nuts like almonds, walnuts and pistachios. The list goes on, but the point is that a heart-healthy diet doesn’t have to be limiting; rather, it’s full of delicious food.

Shopping is Easy So how do you know if something meets the nutritional standards you need to maintain a healthy heart? You don’t need to be a nutritionist for this. Simply look for the American Heart Association’s(R) iconic Heart-Check mark on food packages when you ship, and you’ll instantly know it meets the Association’s recommendations to be part of a healthy eating pattern.

Eating Healthy Has Never Been More Delicious

(BPT) - Yoga mats, kale salads, fitness trackers, standing desks and gym memberships. It seems like everywhere you look, people are taking strides to get healthier. And with good reason. In the U.S., 37.9 percent of adults aged 20 and older suffer from obesity, and heart disease accounts for one out of every four deaths. Despite these harrowing numbers, many people have difficulty embracing a heart-healthy lifestyle, especially when it comes to food. Part of the reason for this is that too often people think that eating right involves a list of what you cannot eat. It’s easier to focus on all the things you can eat. As February is American Heart Month, it’s a perfect opportunity to consider how easy and delicious it is to stick to a hearthealthy diet.

in 10 Americans will become a ghost or apparition. At least, that is what Greg Murphy of the Portland Area Paranormal Society (P.A.P.S.) claims. He will be traveling from Oregon to Fresno with his childhood best friend and psychic medium, Mysteria, to investigate an alleged haunting at Hart’s Haven Used Bookstore. Greg Murphy is a cat groomer by day and paranormal investigator by night. They also travel with Greg’s polydactyl tuxedo cat, Mittens II. They arrive just in time for the Rogue Festival,

March 8-10, and will be conducting their investigations publicly, under the name The Paranormal Pair. “The spirits called me to Hart’s Haven, no one contacted us”, says Mysteria. “This happens a lot. At vaudeville clubs in our hometown of Portland, Oregon. The Dark Arts Festival in Astoria, Oregon. The Portfringe Festival in Portland, Maine. Our investigations provoke a lot of laughter, but that’s a natural reaction to fear... I don’t laugh.”

While performing in Maine, The Portland Phoenix applauded their “A+ physical comedy”, and First Looks call the pair “funny, weird, engaging, charismatic, and—at strategic moments—hokey, all executed with the thought and intention that makes for classic Fringe…” Greg Murphy begs to differ. “Paranormal investigation is serious business. Viewers will have to mentally prepare themselves for Ghost Hunt Bingo, Mysteria’s psychic talents, and a song-and-dance finale.” says Murphy. “Just look around at the world today. It’s more important than ever to be able to separate fact from fiction. One thing I know is true: Abnormal is the new normal… Catchy, right? I will be selling t-shirts after the investigation.” The duo are members of Box of Clowns, who recently appeared on ABC’s The Gong Show. Fresno audiences may remember their show Mustache Party! The Salvador Dali Show from the Rogue Mini Fringe Festival in 2016. The Paranormal Pair performs during Rogue Festival 2018 at Hart’s Haven: 950 N. his is the type of theatre that only happens when ambitious twentysomethings are given the opportunity to do whatever they want. Nearly 80 years ago, a movie studio gave an untested 26-year-old keys to a studio, half a million dollars, and complete artistic control. He hired a couple dozen theatre actors and created the greatest film ever made, Citizen Kane. Cut to 2018. A group of twentysomethings have been given a theatre, an hour, and no rules. They’ve created a play called ASS or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bong. We follow the parallel stories of Tiramisu L’astname and Jet Fuel, a pair of poor Millennial roommates from the Tower District, as they navigate the most eventful day of their lives. For Tiramisu, the day begins with a series of job interviews and ends with her traveling through space to defeat a group of terrorist aliens who are attempting to destroy Earth. For Jet, what starts as a piano lesson with a nine-year-old named Timmy quickly becomes a life-or-death struggle to defeat a

Featuring space travel, talking cockroaches, sword fights, magic duels, nearly thirty characters played by only three actors, mind-boggling wordplay, and hundreds of pop culture references, this is a show that can only be found at the Rogue Festival. This is Joshua Ryan Taylor’s third year producing a show for the Rogue. In 2016, he brought AWKWARD CONVERSATIONS WITH ANIMALS I’VE F*CKED, which Donald Munro of the Fresno Bee called “a gutsy, no holds-barred… fine piece of theatre.” He also listed it as one of his Top 20 Cultural Events of 2016. In 2017, Taylor wrote and starred in THANKS FOR COMING, which Kings River Life called “crazy, hilariously funny, but also a sweet story,” and Marc Gonzalez of The Road to 1,000 called “a cleverly-written, well-acted play.” Critics are raving! ASS has been called “a show,” and “less than an hour long.” The New York Times has said, “We have no knowledge of this piece or any of the artists involved.”
