EDITOR’S NOTE I was watching a stand-up comic tell an amusing anecdote about deciding to add a dog to his family at the behest of his kids, pressuring him to adopt, not shop. In response, he said something to the effect of: “So instead of going to some experienced breeder, I went to a shelter and adopted a dog with no known history, training, and potential behavioral issues and brought it home to my kids.” The audience laughed. Like, a lot. And I felt surprised that so many people thought it was funny. This must be a theme of thinking when it comes to rescuing animals from shelters. Makes sense, there’s no telling (in a lot of cases) where an animal comes from or what issues they have if any. Don’t be discouraged by this! Let me give you an example of two cats with two different backgrounds: Ginger, the talkative tortoiseshell, and Leo, the strawberry blonde with a permanent scowl on his face. Ginger was rescued from beneath a building where she lay with a broken tail and puncture wounds around her neck and face. The poor thing had most likely escaped the jaws of a large dog by the skin of her teeth. Her tail wasn’t just broken; it was hanging by a small strip of fur. The tail eventually fell off, and all that was left was the remnants of the bone protruding out, exposed. Pretty nasty stuff. It took a lot of sweet talk, milk, and food to get her to come out of her hiding place. Finally, she made it to the vet. They took care of her tail, which is now a cute little fluff-nub, and a score of puncture wounds, no doubt from the

dog’s teeth. After she healed, we knew we couldn’t let her go and decided to adopt her. Ginger is in a constant state of purring. She’s calm, easy-going, gentle, and ALWAYS on the hunt for a warm lap to curl up in. She never clawed anything she wasn’t supposed to - except the dog, she hates dogs - and prefers the outdoors, so we never have to keep a cat box around. Soon after bringing Ginger home, we realized she was pregnant, and when she had her kittens, it was apparently essential to adopt one of those as well. Enter Leo. Leo has never known a hard day’s life. Ever. Yet, he’s scared of everything. He cries until you pay attention to him, he pees on things when you don’t. If the butter isn’t high quality, well then, heaven forbid. (don’t ask why he gets butter, it definitely wasn’t my doing) And if you want to play? Better use gloves. And if you don’t want to play? Too bad, your toes under the blankets say otherwise. The point is, choosing to bring a pet into your home can be a blessing - but not all blessings are dressed in a perfect package. Plenty of rescue stories show animals who seem to have an innate sense of being rescued - their gratitude is evident in the way they love or protect. All animals take patience, rescue animals are just asking that you give them the same chance as that pure-bred puppy you’re thinking about adopting. Will you give it to them? This issue is dedicated to those sheltered pets and those who are willing to open their homes to one.

ARF // SPOTLIGHT

Animal Rescue of Fresno by Wendy Hunter

I

t’s the Year of the Dog! And because that’s right up our alley, the crew at Animal Rescue of Fresno has already been as busy as honeybees in a poppy field. There’s always something going on at ARF, and we started out 2018 with a Volunteer-Make a Difference event in January. These orientation and training sessions are for people interested in joining our merry band of worker bees. If you love dogs and don’t mind getting your hands dirty, we’re always looking for dependable recruits. It’s a great way to meet friends, play with dogs, and have a lot of fun. As a volunteeronly organization, we make sure ARF runs like a well-oiled machine. And sometimes, it just takes a little elbow grease. The next two Make a Difference events are Saturday, March 10th, and April 7th. Come on out, and we’ll show you the fine art of doing mass quantities of laundry, cleaning kennels, and picking up dog poop. Because volunteering at ARF is glamorous... In the sweetheart month of February, we received an invite from our friends at Casa de Tamales, to join them for a night of fabulous food during their monthly Art Hop. Home of the best tamales on the planet, the proprietors of this Fulton Mall restaurant generously donated a portion of their proceeds to ARF. Gestures such as these are much appreciated, so we eagerly give them a big shout-out. It was a lovely evening, and the dogs seemed to

enjoy all the attention they received from sidewalk strollers. The Casa De Tamales crew couldn’t have been nicer, and I couldn’t have stuffed those Creamy Chicken Poblano morsels in my mouth any faster. But I sure tried… A couple of weeks later, we hosted our annual PAWsome Breakfast Buffet, where omelets, pancakes, pastries, chorizo, and cheesy potatoes were consumed by happy members of the public. This ARF fundraiser helps to support ongoing medical care, transportation, and saving dogs from many different kill shelters around the valley. We treasure our amazing supporters, who always show up with open hearts, empty stomachs, and their adopted pets. Because pups like pancakes too! Without our patrons, too many of our rescue efforts would not be half as successful. To them, we can only offer a humble “thank you.” “Heaven Can Wait” was a wonderful film back in the day, but it’s also the name of a program that we take a lot of pride in talking about. Several times a year, the President of ARF loads up her van with dozens of lucky dogs and drives them all the way to Medford, Oregon. Working with the incredible people of our partner rescue, SoHumane, our mission is to get these dogs a second chance to find their forever homes. https://www.sohumane.org/ A few days after Arthop, our President hit the proverbial road once again, along with 58 carefully

| FRESNOFLYER.COM |

crated critters, all tucked in and ready for the long journey north. Upon arrival, the caring team at SoHumane descended upon the van, unloading dogs, checking off names, and leading them to the warmth and safety of their temporary kennels. Just a week after landing in Medford, they were the stars of SoHumane’s big adoption event, and 37 of the 58 dogs found their new families in ONE DAY. I guess they don’t call California the Golden State for nothing because our dogs seem to shine the brightest. Animal Rescue of Fresno has a lot going on in March, and by the time you read this, we’ll have survived another year at the Fresno Home and Garden Show. As I’m writing my article on opening day, the show is already a success, with two dogs adopted in the first 45 minutes. I’m looking forward to volunteering at our booth over the weekend and trying not to get cinnamon bun frosting all over my face while talking to the crowd. On the weekend of March 23rd and 24th, ARF will be holding a giant yard sale to raise funds for the next “Heaven Can Wait” trip. So if you’re getting a jump on your spring cleaning, and have gently used items hanging around, bring them to our facility. It’s for a good cause, and we might even be able to get a couple of bucks for your 1975 tape recorder. But only if you throw in your KISS cassette collection. To end the month on a tasty note for you, bring the gang down to Pieology in Fig Garden on March 29th, where they will donate a portion of their proceeds to ARF. We’ll have a few dogs for adoption out on the patio, so come on by and have a slice of pie! SPOTLIGHT \\ ADOPTABLES FRIENDS OF MADERA ANIMAL SHELTER F

or a limited time, Friends of Madera Animal Shelter (FMAS) is offering FREE spay and neuter services for pit bull and pit bullmixed breeds in the Madera County area. Housing a pet may not always incur substantial costs, but setting them and the owner’s up for success within the confines of socially acceptable pet-ownership practices - the basics, i.e., adoption, spay/neuter, vaccines, microchip, and an overall check-up with the vet can pull more on the wallet than expected. Fortunately for Central Valley residents, many of the local shelters are going above and beyond in finding ways to keep costs low. “Thanks to Petsmart Charities Grant, we are able to offer this service to the entire Madera County Community,” shares Friends of Madera Animal Shelter staff. The motivation to provide free services is rooted in the breed’s popularity within the Central Valley. Pit bulls show up en mass not only to shelters but are also commonly found in the suburbs. The “nanny” dog is a well-known favorite, and because of this, the breed was selected as a recipient of the grant funding received by FMAS. Those interested in the program need to act fast, the free spay and neuter services stop when the grant runs out. The good news is, when the funds are depleted, services are

as low as $20 for dogs and $15 for cats for those who qualify for the low-cost spay and neuter program. Verification of low-income (just bring in your I.D. and MediCal, SSI, EBT or utility assistance) along with proof of residency within the Madera County community is all that’s necessary to receive benefit. Those with feral cats in their neighborhood can look to the shelter for their ‘Free Community Feral Cat Vouchers’. FMAS also offers a lowcost shot clinic on the first Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Madera District Fairgrounds - this clinic is open to everyone and does not require any income requirements. Friends of Madera Animal Shelter is a non-profit organization that has been partnering with Madera Animal Shelter for over 15 years. Volunteers and fosters are always welcome and are encouraged to attend orientation on the third Saturday of every month at the Madera County Shelter at 10 a.m. Call 559-363-5106 for more details. Visit ww.fmas.info for updates on upcoming events and further information regarding the various programs the shelter offers.
