Fresno Flyer Vol 2 No 20

Page 1

EDITOR’S NOTE I’ve said it before, but I think it bears repeating - the name of the paper may be Fresno Flyer, but we cover much more than just the geographic area of Fresno. Not too long ago a business owner in another city commented how they’d be more interested in sponsoring an [insert hometown] Flyer rather than a ‘Fresno’ Flyer since their base of operations was not in the ‘No.’ When we explained that we do, indeed, deliver the paper in their area directly reaching their demographic, they still shied away from the idea… all while looking at the title ‘Fresno Flyer.’ Maybe it was hometown pride or perhaps it was a prudent business marketing decision, either way, it reinforced some of what I had written about in previous notes regarding the fragmented identity that exists in the Central Valley. I get it, I do, I’m from Lemoore and when I was growing up… heaven forbid if someone mixed me up as a Hanford kid - no, no, I’m from ‘Lemas.’ However, if I went to the Bay Area, the coast, or LA, I always said I was from Fresno. You know why? Because no one knew what the hell a ‘Lemas’ was, but they knew where Fresno was. This isn’t to say that Lemoore or any of the other smaller towns around the Valley are any less significant than a bigger city, it’s

just easier for outsiders to create one identity or point of reference for a geographic area. Just like we say ‘LA’ for everything down south even though we know Pasadena is its own City, or that Anaheim isn’t even in LA County, we’ll still refer to it as ‘LA’ just because it’s easier to say. Because, to us, it’s pretty much all the same. Fresno is that point of reference for the whole

Valley. The collective identity we have depends on us, the residents. If we don’t come together to work on and reinforce it, the reputation becomes whatever assumptions are conjured up by outsiders… and in case you didn’t know, we are considered the fly-over state of California, we might as well be Iowa (sorry Iowans) to everyone else. Again, not to say there’s anything wrong with Iowa, I’m just saying that we’re an under-appreciated, underrated area and I’m confident that there are plenty who would agree with me. The Fresno Flyer is about reinforcing the upward mobility of the Central Valley, promoting everything that makes us unique as a multicultural, multifaceted area, and celebrating it. Using ‘Fresno’ in the title of our paper is just a point of geographical reference for the much larger and complicated identity of the Central Valley. It’s really about all of us, not just one piece of a whole.

SHINZEN // SPOTLIGHT

A

Japanese OASIS

Hidden just under your nose as one of the Central Valley’s best kept secrets is the Shinzen Friendship Garden in Fresno’s Woodward park. By Will Freeney | memo247365@gmail.com

H

ave you ever thought it would be nice to get away, to find beauty and serenity that takes you outside the mundane surroundings and events of your daily life in Fresno? Sure, we are blessed with the majesty of the Sierras nearby - in Kings Canyon, Sequoia National Park, and Yosemite. Yes, the lulling rhythm of waves breaking gently on sandy shores can be enjoyed along the Central Coast just a few short hours away. What if you really need a getaway, though, and don’t have hours or days to get to your getaway? What if you are sated with the Sierras and the coast and really desire something more exotic? The answer could be as close as Woodward Park. Tucked away in the center of the park, easily overlooked if you drive through on your way to one of the many other features of the park, lies Shinzen Friend-

ship Garden – an oasis of elegant natural beauty. Japanese gardens offer a very different form of landscape enhancement than, say, traditional English gardens. The controlling principle in Japanese gardens is beauty and serenity as opposed to the order and uniformity of English gardens. The result is a pocket of tranquility, a place to relax while treating the eyes to a wide array of botanical wonders and enhanced landscape features. Shinzen Friendship Garden offers all of this, and its origins lie in the pursuit of that central element of its name – friendship. Following World War II, many American cities fostered sister-city friendships with Japanese cities, and Fresno was one of them – choosing Kochi, Japan as its sister city. The most common translation of Shinzen is “goodwill,” which reinforces the emphasis on friendship. Shinzen literally means “before

| FRESNOFLYER.COM |

god,” which can indicate an altar or place of spiritual attention. Once there, you will see how the garden evokes that kind of serenity. The vision for the creation of Shinzen Friendship Garden was born in 1967 and fostered by the donation of land for Woodward Park by Ralph Woodward. The nascent concept was nurtured by the Woodward Park Japanese Development Committee, led by Ben Nakamura. The actual design of the park was accomplished by a succession of contributors – Kodo Matsubara, Paul Saito, and Shiro Nakagawa, with assistance from the City of Fresno. The garden itself reached maturity with its incorporation and dedication in 1981. A Board of Directors for the associated 501(c)3 oversees maintenance and management of services and programs. In addition to the original features of the garden, the Clark Bonsai Collection has made its home in Shinzen Friendship Garden since autumn 2015. This collection of over 100 miniature trees is an amazing testament to the horticultural art of bonsai, but it is also a “living museum” offering lectures, training, and workshops in the pursuit of bonsai. There is no better time than now to experience Shinzen Friendship Garden. It is springtime, when the garden’s year-round beauty is augmented by many fragrant and

colorful blossoms. Springtime also marks the seasonal shift in the Friendship Garden’s hours of operation. From April 1st through September 30th, the garden is open not only on weekends and holidays (10 am – 7pm) but also on weekdays Wednesday to Friday (10am – 7pm). Lastly, but most importantly, the advent of Spring is marked by the celebration of the Spring Cultural Festival this April 10am to 4pm. At the time this article was written, the date of the event had yet to be decided between April 7 or 15 - dependent on the weather. Performances start at 11am, with Koto (traditional Japanese stringed instrument) in the Tea House and Lusheng/ Fashion Show/Dance in the Main Garden. The performances continue in the main garden throughout the afternoon, with a varied assortment of regional dances, including Hula (Hawaiian), Khymer (Cambodian), Teocalli (Aztec), Polynesian, and Tounkara (Malinese). Simultaneously, there will be a Tea Presentation in the Tea House at noon, followed by an Ikebana (formal flower arrangement) presentation at 2pm. In addition to expanded awareness of Japanese culture, visitors to Shinzen

SPOTLIGHT \\ ADOPTABLES Shinzen cont’d from pg 3... Friendship Garden during the Spring Blossom Festival this April can expand their knowledge of relatively recent history – McLane High School’s current Art Venture Project, “Gaman: Enduring the Seemingly Unbearable with Patience and Dignity -- images and stories of the incarceration of Japanese-Americans at Manzanar” will be on exhibit throughout the day. Should you become hungry in the midst of all this aural and visual stimulation, lunch will be available from 11am to 2pm, provided by Taste Catering. For those for whom no outing is complete without an opportunity to shop, the Spring Cultural Festival will be offering a wide array of unique and artful products from independent vendors: Contours in Clay, Fresno Gift Pic, Designs by Camille, North American Satsuki, Bonsai Center Naturals, Hilda Vandergriff, Wired Stone Creations, Chieko’s Art, Pastimes Pottery, Partners N Art, Beasley Ono Garden, Soaps N’ Stuff, and Lady Heather Soap Company. So, mark your calendar. Dedicate your Saturday afternoon to experiencing new sights and sounds in an exquisitely exotic locale virtually in your own backyard. The cost of admission ($5 for adults, $1 for students, seniors, and children 4-14) plus parking ($5 per car, $3 for seniors) is well worth it. For that price you can experience that alternative getaway and absorb new cultural experiences along with your serenity – and without the jet lag and expense of a trip to Japan. If – as likely will be the case – you are charmed by the Shinzen Friendship Garden and stimulated by the abundance of cultural and historical education

provided at the Spring Cultural Festival, you can look forward to more events later in the season. The Toro Nagashi (Floating Lantern) Festival takes place late in the summer at the conclusion of Obon. Obon is a traditional Japanese celebration in which the souls of the ancestors are honored and are believed to return. Toro Nagashi, in which lanterns are set afloat on a nearby body of water, represents the return of the ancestors’ souls to the afterlife. The release of several hundred lit lanterns on Woodward Lake, in this case, will be both a solemn and joyful spectacle well worth experiencing in person and will be held at the Woodward Lake shore adjacent to the Shinzen Friendship Garden on August 11th. Additional events this year include Art & Music in the Garden on May 5th. For upcoming details on these events and for comprehensive information about Shinzen Friendship Garden and the many opportunities for meaningful getaways that it offers, consult their website (www.shinzenjapanesegarden.org) or give them a call at (559) 840-1264. n

10 reasons to Plant a Tree This Spring (BPT) - Did you know planting a tree is one of the easiest and most powerful things you can do to have a positive impact on the environment? It’s true. Trees clean the air, prevent rainwater runoff, help you save energy and even combat global warming. And they’re a snap to plant! No horticultural degree required. With Arbor Day just around the corner in April, there’s no better time to give Mother Nature a little TLC by planting a tree. From the single homeowner in Nebraska planting a maple in her backyard to the 250 Comcast employees volunteering in communities devastated by hurricanes, fires and Emerald Ash Borer infestation by planting hundreds of trees on Comcast Cares Day (the nation’s largest single-day corporate volunteer event), people nationwide are getting their tree on this spring. Here are 10 reasons why you should join them. Trees Fight Climate Change

Wish you could do more than recycling and reducing your carbon footprint to combat climate change? Trees have you covered. Through photosynthesis, trees absorb harmful carbon dioxide, removing and storing the carbon and releasing oxygen back into the air.

EPA and the Center for Watershed Protection are recognizing the importance of trees in managing runoff. Leaf canopies help buffer the falling rain and their roots hold the soil in place, encouraging the water to seep into the ground rather than run off.

CALENDAR \\ NEW WRINKLES

New Wrinkles Presents On The Road to Broadway

The Fresno City College production celebrates not only a cast of performers aged 55 and above, but also their 30th consecutive year.

N

ew Wrinkles is a musical production presented each year by Fresno City College. The money the show makes helps offset the costs of other school performances that are not as well supported by the public. It is actually a two semester class called “Senior Showcase” and each member of the cast pays fees, has a student ID number and is awarded a single credit for each semester – just like any other class. The Artistic and Vocal Directors are members of the FCC staff. The Music Director and band members receive a small amount of remuneration, but the rest of the cast does it for the fun we have and to give something to the community that is uniquely Fresno. T h e show originated in 1989 under the guiding hand of the late Tom Wright (FCC Theater Director), having been funded in part by a grant from Sears Roebuck and Co. Originally there were four such senior performing ensembles started by grants from Sears and scattered across the U.S. We are proud to say that, after 29 consecutive years, we are the only one of the originals left. We perform 17 shows over a three week period and nearly fill the theater at FCC every show. (The theater seats about 400 people, so that’s over 6000 patrons annually. And - several of them have never missed a show.) When Tom Wright retired, Fred Bologna brought his vision to the show and directed for ten years. Five years ago, well known Fresno choreographer and dance teacher David Bonetto took over as Artistic Director and in-

fused the show with new life and a new look. As far as anyone can determine, New Wrinkles is the only show of its kind left in the U.S., the Palm Springs “Follies” having closed their doors several years ago. It is unique in the truest sense of the word – a true Fresno treasure. The cast of New Wrinkles is composed exclusively of singers and dancers age 55 and above. One cast member was in the audience for the very first show, joined the cast the following year, and has performed in nearly every show since. She is now 93 years old and still

going strong but works in the background as an advisor and advocate, having retired from performing two years ago. The oldest performing cast member is 86. The average age of the cast is around 70 years and our youngest is just 55. This year’s show is entitled “On the Road to Broadway”. The cast will take the audience through the trials and tribulations of an aspiring performer on his or her way to the Great White Way through the presentation of over 50 songs and dances, all compressed into two hours of fun. The show runs from May 25 thru June 10 and tickets can be obtained either on line at newwrinklesfresno.com or through the FCC box office, 559442-8221.
