EDITOR’S NOTE I’ve been in a long debate with our Publisher about the content of the Flyer. She says we need to include more ‘masculine’ themed topics. Not that I avoid them, I just hadn’t noticed we weren’t really including them. But naturally, this sparked a long winded diatribe about how the world is, essentially, filled with the proverbial masculine voice. Pick any industry in the world that isn’t in the category of housekeeping or caretaking. With it, you’ll find a male dominated field. As a woman who played bass guitar in a metal band for five years, took on a journalism degree with an emphasis in a tech driven field and then decided to jump into a business that makes its living by working with seasoned business owners, it’s been a “Hey there little lady” kind of experience. A lot of “Are you sure you can work that thing,” and “Let me show you how it’s really done” from more than a few male counterparts. Am I a Feminazi? No. And I hate that word by the way. I’m just looking for a little credit where credit is due... as anyone would be if they’ve been overlooked because they don’t tout an ‘alpha’ persona. But even the term ‘alpha’ is considered gender specific, no? We allow men to flex their authoritative muscle, and when they do we say “Bravo! What a leader!” but if a woman does it, well she’s just a ball buster.

Anyway, I digress. Where was I going with this? Oh yes. The more I go round and round on this topic with our Publisher, sorta kinda losing the argument, I think about the idea of masculinity. And the more I think about it, searching for a way to turn the tides of the argument in my favor, the more I begin to realize that the idea of what’s ‘masculine’ really just pertains to what we commonly consider masculine interests… regardless of what someone happens to be packing in their pants. What that really means is more coverage of sports, more talk of the outdoors, car shows, off roading, hiking, gaming, coding… etc. These are all topics of interest society likes to pin on men, so by default, we’ve categorized them as masculine. But, ladies, how many of you dig this sort of stuff? Tons. I know, because I enjoy all of the above and so do a lot of my female friends. There’s a huge culture of nerds and geeks and tomboys who don’t care what’s thought of as masculine or feminine, they just like what they like. So, I guess the Publisher has a point. We need to make a better effort to broaden our scope and include a wider range of topics, be it masculine, feminine, and everyone in between. What do you think? Hit us up on Facebook or Twitter, or send me an email. Are we on point or missing the mark?

3 Questions About Cycling

BiKE LIFE: by Edna Pedroza

F

rom a young age, movement and exploration have equated to the word ‘adventure’ for me. It was ok to run, reach out, be curious and try something new. I must have been eight or nine years old when I realized that no matter what, I was going to be supported by the one person in my life who would always care, my mom. That signaled the beginning of an empowering sense of freedom and safety. It compelled me to explore new places and meet new people. After high school, I moved to Sacramento and then to the Bay Area where I attended different colleges and universities. I traveled, ate, drank, met tons of interesting people and learned about all sorts of cultures. Ultimately those experiences, however, left me longing for a steady place to call my own, a place where I could put my roots down. Cycling had always been a fun pastime for me as I believe that cycling can become a sort of gateway activity. It’s a step in which we can switch on our awareness, start to care and develop an interest in our community that wasn’t there before. We’re able to get a closer look at the environment when we’re on a bicycle as opposed to being in a car. We can slow down and take in the scenery at a pace that feels like there’s no escaping the emergence of our inner activist. Cycling is awesome for the physical and mental well-being. It’s a low impact exercise that is also great for the environment and community. By cycling, we are able to help lower pollution levels. Fresno and the San Joaquin Valley are a wonderful place to try cycling and there are many ways in which to start. This interview series is a way for me to encourage people to give cycling a chance. It’s also an effort to do my part in helping to make my community a better place. This is a compilation of three questions answered by people around the community of Fresno, and other states.

| FRESNOFLYER.COM |

1. What do you like or dislike about biking? 2. Why is riding your bike important to you? 3. What is one thing you can say to encourage someone who want to try bicycling, but is afraid to?

Ed Smith Fresno I like that bicycling slows me down. I see people and dogs and I smell dinner cooking on my way home. Summer mornings are my favorite; cool and shady and quiet. I like the solitude. Bicycling is a meditative practice. The longer I do it, the easier it gets, since I’m not racing. I also like that it can be hard. It’s an endurance activity and I learn things about myself that I didn’t know. Long solo rides of great difficulty are vision quests. I like that my bicycle is a simple machine. It is understandable and maintainable and I am able to acquire all the tools and skills I need to keep it running and to keep me safe. Bicycling is a secret and a privilege and a pleasure and it is my salvation. Bicycling has also connected me to a community of people that have enriched my life and strengthened my ties to others. Having meaningful connections to others is correlated with health and happiness.

Good things: Mobility; I can ride just about anywhere interesting and don’t need a carwidth lane or parking. Useful Exercise; get a workout, be transported, and do some sight-seeing at the same time, try that with a treadmill. Bad things: Oblivious drivers, Swiss cheese roads and CYCLISTS THAT DON’T WAVE (laughs) Cycling is efficient in many ways, Americans (and likely others) have become extremely wasteful in recent decades, I think cycling is a good way to encourage less wasteful behavior across all aspects of life. Plus it’s fun (bugs, sweat, pain, dirt, scars, sunburn… fun, right?)

3.

Once you gain control of your mighty steed you will fear nothing! So, over time, drive somewhere quiet and ride around there, then somewhere less quiet, then somewhere busy, etc. until you understand how the bike responds to the rider and have experienced the most frustrating places to ride.

Ester Postiglione San Joaquin Valley 1.

2.

Riding my bike is important to me. It makes me think about my safety and my health and it focuses my attention on the long term. What do I need to do to ensure I’ll still be riding 30 or 40 years from now? How do I avoid declining health that would prevent me from riding regularly? It makes me prioritize sleep, so that I’m physically able to get out of bed and onto my bike each day. How should I eat so I feel good? The bicycle is the center of my life and balance. Bicycling is important to me because it makes me feel better.

If you want to start bicycling but you are afraid, take a Smart Cycling class taught by a League Cycling Instructor. You will learn concrete skills, get lots of practice, and build your confidence. You will also meet like minded people and make friends, and connect to a community, which will make you much more likely to persevere while you learn.

I like that I feel like a kid when I ride. I like the feeling of independence and not relying on a car for transportation. I don’t like that I feel unsafe riding sometimes because I’m not sure drivers are paying attention. I don’t like loose dogs which freak me out when I’m riding. I don’t like that I get nervous if my bike will still be there or not when I lock it up.

2.

Riding my bike is important because its a fun and easy way to be active and its important to me to model healthy behaviors for my son. It’s also something that we do as a family so my husband son and I get some quality time together.

3.

Just try it once and you’ll be hooked! My husband and I have gotten our group of friends into biking and now we occasionally do group rides to Tioga.

1.

Jim Remley Clinton UT

I don’t like flattening out my hair with my helmet if Im riding to work or an event. I don’t like planning ahead how to carry things if I’m going to an event. I don’t like the risk of being hit by a car. I don’t like that various body parts go numb if I bike more than 2 hours.

2.

uh oh @edna I see I forgot to say what I like about biking for number 1! I only answered the dislike part of that question.... so let’s see I like doing something I did as a kid, I find the feeling of momentum and playful motion inherently pleasant. I like the self congratulatory sense of doing something a bit hard when I climb a hill and the thrill of flying downhill. I like feeling like I am cleaning out my arteries and doing something healthy. I like how my mood is almost always lifted by physical activity.

3.

Riding my bike is important to me because it makes me feel more alive than being in a car, it is fun, I see more detail. Also it makes me feel alert and healthy. Biking is fun-its a natural anti-depressant!

1.

I like that it’s accessible where I live. I can get out and ride on a safe trail from my home and be done in an hour.

2.

It’s important because it allows me to disconnect. It’s like meditation with the added benefit of health.

3.

Just get out there and do it. Worry about things like gear and equipment later. Challenge yourself and don’t worry about what others have and can do.

Colleen Clarkson Burlington VT 1.

I love the different experience I get out of my daily surroundings!! Also I just feel super proud that I haven’t wiped out yet...

Fun easy workout allowing you to explore further. Just ride around town first, go to a bike friendly park and do you. Don’t ride too much out in farm land, too many loose dogs.

I like the exhilarating feeling. Feeling free as the wind. I can do errands quicker than walking.

I’ve always ridden a bike. It was just an absolute as a kid. Like learning to read. It’s peaceful. I love trail riding, as much as windy roads. Last year, I did a century ride on a mountain bike with no training. I came in last and it was totally fun. I don’t like biking in America where there’s traffic. It’s not a bike culture here like it is in Amsterdam. We spent time there and biked all over. Biking here for me is scary unless I’m on a leisure ride or biking to beach with kids. I don’t trust the drivers. I wish that Americans biked more and in a leisure way. It seems you have a lot of all or nothing bikers who get all geared up intensely instead of just making it part of their life. But then again the all or nothing is so American, isn’t it.

| FRESNO FLYER |

Anna Spool Boston MA 1.

I would love to bike more but wished I lived right on a bike path. Not a big fan of having a small metal object (the bike) between me and Boston drivers.

2.

I used to love the physical sensation of biking: the wind, those leg muscles actually doing something. It’s liberating. Bikes are awesome metaphors. They’re also great because they’re low tech, [alI] the technology [is] essentially the same. All our hardware now (computers, thumb drives, etc) become so obsolete so quickly.

3.

A bike is a bike. You hop on and go! No revving up. You’re either on or off. If you space out, you’ll crash and die. So yeah, very Zen. Though I have seen a bald guy with a tie, going to work, holding 4 coffees on a tray, not holding the handlebars, and no helmet. That’s what I call multitasking. If he were talking on the phone as well, that would have been perfect.

Edna Pedroza Fresno

This site also has a long list of resources on advocacy and organizations, here are a few:

I love that I feel like I’m 8 years old again, I can’t not smile when I’m riding my bike, just impossible. It’s great exercise physically and mentally. I have scoliosis and it’s a great physical activity for that because of the fixed rotation of pedaling; as well as the low impact nature of it. I love that cycling helps the environment, no carbon emissions therefore no pollution. I have a role in saving the planet by riding (sooooo rad). What has surprised me is the sense of confidence I am given when on the road. When you know the rules (most motorists don’t IMHO) then you can confidently feel like you belong on road that is dominated mostly by vehicles, feels good man. I dislike all the time management skills you have to have, especially if you’re using your bicycle as a main mode of transportation...although that improves over time as you get to know your speed and routes. I also dislike hot days especially in the Central Valley, it get’s into triple digit weather during the summer.. Although, you do get to show off your cool tan lines at the end of the season; they’re like earned badges.

It’s a sensory experience. You get a closer look at your environment and community, being up close in that way gives you a unique lens in which to see the beauty and the ugly of your community. It’s been my experience

Join a cycling group to start with, it’s fun to ride in groups and gain tips and safety knowledge from them. If you’ve never ridden before try it out in a park or stick to paved trails - ask someone you trust to teach you how to ride. Learn the rules of the road for motorists and cyclists so you have confidence in what you’re doing. Cyclists have rights! Also, personalize your bicycle and have fun with it. I crocheted a “bicycle outfit” for mine, some people have called what I’ve done a “yarn bomb” on my bike, which is cool right? Personalizing your bicycle makes the experience of riding all the more enjoyable - you get to show off your work. that when seeing through this lens, you can’t help but to want to care about what you see. I believe everyone has an inner activist and cycling is a way to bring that out in you, to any extent that may be. It’s a win-win “sitch”, whether it causes you to pick up a piece of garbage on the street, organize or just ride more.

Alliance For Biking And Walking The Alliance For Biking And Walking is the national coalition of state and local bicycle and pedestrian advocacy organizations working in unison to break down the barriers to safe bicycling and walking in North American communities. They bring leaders of their member organizations together to help each other grow their organizations and become more effective. They also strengthen organizations through resource sharing and training opportunities, and help create organizations in underserved communities. Bicycle Friendly America Program The Bicycle Friendly America Program is an awards program that recognizes municipalities that actively support bicycling. A Bicycle-Friendly Community provides safe accommodation for cycling and encourages its residents to bike for transportation and recreation. The League of American Bicyclists administers the Bicycle Friendly Community Campaign. Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute This is the advocacy program of the Washington Area Bicyclist Association, a small, active, non-profit consumer-funded program acting as a clearinghouse and a technical resource for bicycle helmet information. Volunteers from the BHSI serve on the ASTM bicycle helmet standard committee and are active in commenting on actions of the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Transform Fresno Round 2 by Lisa Talley lisa@fresnoflyer.com

early 300 people were in attendance for the second Community Steering Committee Meeting on August 2nd to discuss Fresno’s $70 million funding opportunity granted by the state. It was a second attempt at what the first meeting failed to do. Crowded in the overheated lobby of the Hotel Californian, the first meeting lacked a proper sound system and many, who weren’t in the first row, struggled to hear council member Oliver Baines and other city officials speak. This lead to a miscommunication that had tensions running high, members of the community shouting, arguing, and at some points, calling each other some colorful four letter words. It didn’t help that the lobby also lacked air conditioning and adequate seating. It was obvious that the Fresno Transformative Climate Communities Collaborative (FTCCC) underestimated the drive and interest of the community in how that $70 million should be spent. Two weeks later and at the Westside Church of God, a new meeting takes place to undo the wrongs of the first. With a proper sound system, a chilly temperature gusting from the robust AC, and a wide display of available seats, things were going right right

away. If you caught our first story on the FTCCC you may have noticed that something else was scheduled around the time of August 2nd; the Proposal Kickoff Workshops. With the flood of questions and concerns that came after the first meeting, the Collaborative postponed the workshops in an effort to dispel any misinformation by hosting another Committee Meeting. More on the workshops at the end of this article. Questions erupted almost immediately once the floor was open. Many of the concerns were over transparency and trust in ensuring that the funds would, indeed, go towards benefitting the 93706 zip code - the area which played a big role in Fresno being eligible to receive the $70 million in the first place. Southwest Fresno has long been at the bottom of any list regarding funding and quality development. The FTCCC - made up of City of Fresno staff and some Central Valley Community Foundation staff - assured those in attendance that the process will be driven by the community, and not by a select few. The $70 million in question will go towards funding projects that will benefit the areas of

Beat the Heat: Tips to Stay Healthy and Hydrated (BPT) - Americans love summertime and with good reason. It is the best time for outdoor fun and travel with family. Many people enjoy outdoor activities such as bicycling, kayaking and hiking, and kids are more active with sports. One thing to keep in mind when out and about in the summer heat is to stay properly hydrated. Unfortunately, many of us are not drinking enough water. In fact, 36 percent of adult Americans drink only three or fewer cups of water per day, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Here are some tips for healthy hydration.

ercising exceeds an hour, a beverage that contains electrolytes is preferable to plain water. That is why most sports drinks contain salt. Of course anyone can easily make their own sports drink by adding a quarter to a half teaspoon of salt per liter or 32 ounces of water. Replacing lost electrolytes is important because they help to regulate cardiovascular and neurological functions, fluid balance and oxygen delivery.

Replace Your Electrolytes

Avoid Hyponatremia

Engaging in physical activity when it is hot outside means you lose water which has to be replaced. You are also losing electrolytes (sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium and bicarbonate) which need to be replaced. Very high temperatures - especially for a prolonged period - can be dangerous, especially for seniors. Ideally, anyone engaging in outdoor activity in the heat or even an indoor exercise program should drink 8 to 12 ounces of fluid every 15 to 20 minutes during a session. If ex-

Replacing water without sufficient salt can produce hyponatremia, a potentially deadly condition caused by too little sodium in the bloodstream. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and can include nausea, muscle cramps, disorientation, confusion, seizures, coma and even death. There have been several documented cases of illness and even deaths from hyponatremia over the past several years. According to the British Medical Journal, 16 runners have died as a result of too little sodium and

Downtown, Southwest, and Chinatown. What will those projects be? That will be decided on by the Community Steering Committee during their public meetings. Who is the Steering Committee? Those who live, work, or own property in Downtown, Southwest, or Chinatown who also regularly attend the Steering Committee meetings. Over the next 2 months, the Fresno Transformative Climate Communities Collaborative will be hosting Community Steering Committee Meetings to discuss potential projects which are eligible for funding. The committee will be able to view these projects, rank them in level of impact and importance, ask questions, and ultimately vote on these projects as to which would best serve the community. However, only those who regularly attend these meetings will have the opportunity to vote, so if you live, work, or own property in the 93706 and 93721 areas it’s important that you begin attending. The Proposal Kickoff Workshops have been postponed to August 15th. These workshops are to help those interested in applying for project funding, determine eligibility. No location has been set yet, and even though a date has been determined it may still be subject to change. For up to date information visit www.TransformFresno.com. The schedule and meeting locations are not publicly listed, but you can request to be added to the email list by clicking on the ‘Contact’ button on the website. The website also contains contact information for those available to answer any questions about this unique process. over-hydration, while another 1,600 have become seriously ill. It is true that water intoxication is more commonly seen among extreme athletes, but older individuals may also be at risk for several reasons.

Exercise and Aging It is important to be active but be careful not to push yourself especially in high heat. As we age, our kidneys become less efficient at conserving the salt we need when the body is stressed, such as from dehydration and high temperatures. When combined with common medications such as diuretics, which are commonly prescribed to treat hypertension, the result could be a greater risk for hyponatremia. When you exercise, your body’s metabolism works at a much higher rate, breaking down and regenerating tissues and creating waste metabolites that need to be flushed out of your system. However, regardless of your level of activity, you still need to maintain good hydration. So remember to always drink plenty of water to beat the heat, but you may also want to up your intake of electrolytes.

Mental Health Matters by Cynthia Callaghan

I

received a question a few days ago that I found thought provoking and yet difficult to answer at the same time. But then, that is how I live my life.

Question: Why do people have difficulty functioning in society? Are the possible theories and reasons valid?

Answer: I had to think about this answer for a few days. First off, how does one define ‘functioning’? If I decide to lie in my bed all day tomorrow and not do anything, how am I functioning? Don’t I have the right to do what I want as long as no one is hurt or maimed? If I lie in my bed every day for a year, how am I functioning? Is functioning coping well? Paying bills on time? Taking care of health issues? Following the laws of the land? Doing all of the homework? Working at a job? Not all of us are actually functioning in all domains all the time. Sociologists might see functioning in terms of how people connect and relate to others in society. All are parts of many social networks, and when functioning is impaired, disconnection and isolation happens. Social work sees functioning as related to oppression. Those that lack resources or those that are marginalized don’t do well. They don’t cope well. They don’t feel good. Psychology might see functioning as affected by early significant relationships as well thoughts and feelings and the internal world. If this is not well, then suffering happens. Anthropology, on the other hand, might see people as part of a larger cultural group and that they have an important role in that system. All roles have a function. All roles have a part in the larger culture. And there is Medicine and Psychiatry and Theology and so many other disciplines that all view functioning differently. Are they wrong? I don’t think so. Their views make life richer and vibrant. So, what is the answer? It’s a conundrum. Maybe there is no answer. What if all these views are all true? What if we all have periods where we function well and then we don’t? We can’t all be exactly the same all the time. What a crazy world that would be. Sometimes we have choice and voice in the matter, and sometimes we do not. Write soon. Oh yeah, and don’t forget to breathe.

Five Steps to Becoming a True Pitmaster

(BPT) - When the skies are blue and the sun is hot, some people hit the pool, drive to the nearest beach, kick back with a book on their deck, or fire up the grill. If you’re one of those people who sees every summer day as an opportunity for grilling, or if you have your smoker going at the same time your neighbors are running their snow blower, you’re probably ready to take it to the next level. How do you go from being an enthusiast to grilling and smoking meat like the best pitmasters? Here are five important steps to consider: 1. Use only the best quality ingredients. The best pitmasters and chefs will tell you that no matter your level of experience, if you don’t have great ingredients you can’t make a great meal. It’s that simple. This is as true in fine French cooking as it is in barbecue. As the winner of Food Network’s “Chopped: Grill Masters,” Pitmaster Ernest Servantes insists on using high-quality, flavorful fresh pork products from Smithfield(R) to get that pork that is tender and juicy every time.

amazing rack of ribs or perfectly marbled pork shoulder or butt, the question is how to season them. People often get carried away, adding too many spices that ultimately overpower the taste of the meat. If you’re cooking with a high-quality cut of meat, a simple rub will often yield the best results. For instance, a recipe for Cactus Jack Texas Spare Ribs uses a rub made up of salt, pepper, chili powder, granulated garlic and onions - just enough to bring out the true flavor of the ribs without being overpowering.

“Cactus Jack” Texas Spareribs Recipe by Chef Ernest Servantes for Smithfield Cactus Jack Rub 2 racks Smithfield(R) Pork Spareribs 1/4 cup kosher salt 1/4 cup cracked black pepper 1 tablespoon granulated garlic 1 tablespoon granulated onion

2. Find the right chips. When smoking 1 teaspoon chili powder fresh meat, the combination of charcoal 1 teaspoon seasoned salt and wood chips can take your flavor to the next level. Pecan, red oak, hickory, apple or Ribs mesquite woods all have their unique attributes and flavors. One isn’t better than Oak or Pecan wood for smoking the other. It’s more a matter of your personal style. Take the time to experiment and 1 cup apple juice, in a spray bottle learn what kind of wood works best for Rattle Snake BBQ Sauce your signature meats and taste preferences. 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 3. Keep the rub simple. Once you have an 1/2 cup diced yellow onion

For “Cactus Jack” Rub, combine salt, pepper, garlic, onion, chili powder and seasoned salt in small bowl; mix well. Season ribs on all sides; cover and refrigerate overnight or for at least two hours. Heat smoker or grill for indirect cooking at 250 degrees F.; add wood for smoking. Place ribs, meaty side up, and smoke for 2 1/2 hours, spraying with apple juice every 30 minutes. Meanwhile, for Rattle Snake BBQ Sauce, heat oil in heavy saucepan over high. Saute onion, jalapeno and garlic until tender. Stir in remaining ingredients except salt and pepper, bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until reduced in volume by 1/3. Remove from heat, season to taste with salt and pepper. Remove ribs from smoker; wrap each rack in heavy-duty aluminum foil. Return to smoker, meaty side down, for an additional two hours until internal temperature reaches 190F to 200F. Remove ribs from foil, place back on smoker and brush with Rattle Snake BBQ Sauce; cook for about 20 minutes. Serve with additional BBQ sauce on the side.Makes: Two to four servings Prep time: 15 minutes plus 24 hours stand time Cook time: Five hours 15 minutes 4. Explore the world. There are many regional barbecue styles in the U.S.: Kansas City, Texas, Memphis and the list goes on. At a time when people are more adventurous in their culinary tastes than ever, try branching out from your normal go-to style and infuse some international flavors into your grilling. For instance, one recipe for Honey Soy Grilled Pork Chops Korean BBQ Sauce combines a medley of Asian flavors, teriyaki marinade, soy sauce and rice wine vinegar with an unmistakable barbecue kick.

6 to 8 (4-oz.) Smithfield(R) Boneless Center Cut Pork Chops 1 cup KC Masterpiece(R) Honey Teriyaki Marinade 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 to 2 tablespoons soy sauce 1 tablespoon white or rice wine vinegar Korean BBQ Sauce 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 2 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 cup water 2 tablespoons soy sauce 2 tablespoons sriracha sauce 4 teaspoons brown sugar 2 teaspoons minced ginger 2 teaspoons KC Masterpiece BBQ Sauce Sprinkle both sides of the pork chops with salt and pepper and place in a large resealable food storage bag. Whisk together honey teriyaki marinade, oil, soy sauce and vinegar; mix well. Pour over pork chops; seal the bag and let stand 1 hour. For Korean BBQ Sauce, heat oil in small saucepan on medium; fry garlic until it begins to turn color. Stir in water, soy sauce, sriracha sauce, brown sugar, ginger and BBQ sauce. Bring to a simmer; reduce heat and cook for 10 minutes or until it becomes thick. Heat charcoal or gas grill to medium. Remove pork chops from marinade (discard marinade) grill for three minutes or until the pork chop easily releases from the grill. Flip chops and continue to cook for three more minutes until internal temperature reaches 145¬∞F to 160¬∞F.Baste each pork chop with Korean BBQ Sauce, grill one minute on each side. Let chops stand for three minutes before serving. Makes: Six to eight servings Prep Time: 10 minutes plus one hour marinade time Cook Time: 18 minutes 5. It’s all about practice. Like a perfect golf swing, grilling or smoking the perfect rack of ribs or pork butt takes time and practice. Invite your friends or family over to practice your grilling or smoking of the best barbecue you ever had and remember that behind each one of those to-die-for bites were practice sessions to perfect your craft. So keep at it!

ow one of the largest Greek Festivals in CA, the Fresno Greek Fest draws visitors from across the state and beyond. Always the last weekend before Labor Day, it begins Friday evening and runs through Sunday evening. Each year the parishioners meet at the first of the New Year to begin planning improvements and crafting the game plan that will feed and entertain a crowd that has grown to over 24,000 in attendance. W h i l e most visitors would agree, “it’s all about the food”, the festival truly offers something for everyone. A good starting place is the docent-led tour of the St. George Greek Orthodox Church. Recently renovated stained glass, murals and iconography are stunning and it is truly one of the architectural and cultural treasures of Fresno. The Main Hall features a variety of Greek standards such as moussaka, spanikopita and lamb shanks, while the Mega Tent has offerings to please any palate. Gyros, feta fries, souvlaki, loukaniko (a homemade Greek sausage made with orange peel-delicious!) plus Greek salad, appetizers and so much more make for difficult decisions. But leave room for the pastries! There’s a myriad of choices- from traditional Baklava to Galaktoboureko,( a filo-wrapped, custard filled piece of heaven) or the “can’t eat just one” loukoumades (a puff of golden dough topped with nuts and honey) along with a cup of Greek coffee! Mindful of the potential for valley heat streaks, shade and misters are in abun-

dance. Food booths have been streamlined and offer multiple Greek delicacies, cutting down on time spent in lines. Parents have a wide variety of play area choices for children and even a convenient beverage booth close by. Then it’s time to dance off the delicacies! Fresno’s Greek Fest features two bandsthe HoHLax trio, direct from Athens, Greece playing authentic acoustic and bouzouki music on the patio and the Olympians, an enormously popular Greek band playing Greek folk, classic and Modern Greek music. Dancing demonstrations will help you get into the rhythm and everyone dances with everyone! Did we mention shopping? The Agora, our outdoor Greek market offers art, jewelry, clothing, collectibles and so much more. A second Agora, featuring hard to find Greek ingredients, is located in the Main Hall. In ancient times, the agora was the central marketplace in most Greek city-states. Typically the agora was located in the center of town. Governmental buildings, such as the council building and courts, surrounded the agora in Athens. The agora was more than a marketplace. People came to the agora to discuss politics, meet with friends, as well as buy items from the market. The Taverna, a popular meeting place for the younger crowd, has a wide selection of Greek spirits-wines, beers and of course, Ouzo! Grab a refreshment! Watch a cooking demonstration, listen to a Byzantine chant or just peo-

ple watch. It’s a wonderful way to make new friends or reconnect with old ones! Great care goes in to planning for the comfort, entertainment and safety of festival goers. 24 hour security, cooling areas and thoughtful choices for entertainment help festivalgoers to come be “Greek for the Weekend” and to invest in the community! Proceeds from Fresno Greek Fest are dedicated to food pantries, food banks, soup kitchens and other charitable destinations. The event takes place on August 25 and continues until the 27th. Admission is only $6. Seniors (65+) and kids under 12 are free. For more information about discounted tickets and volunteering, please visit: www.FresnoGreekFest.com.
