EDITOR’S NOTE Sometimes, I sit staring at the blinking cursor on an empty document trying to find a starting place for the Editor’s Note only to think of everything and nothing all at the same time. If you’re a writer, you know the feeling. It’s the issues on my mind right this second, the ones that were there yesterday, and everything else I’ve encountered over the last month, burning to get out. I drive down the streets to our office - the ones through the neighborhoods in that weird, purgatory-esque part of town where the Tower District ends and downtown begins – and I see boarded up windows, forgotten businesses, and a myriad of strays walking along the sides of the canals. It’s a disheartening sight. And there’s more than a few of these areas in the Valley, not just in Fresno. It’s enough to spark an overwhelming urge to stand on my soapbox and preach solidarity, community participation, and individual responsibility. The urge stays with me for the duration of the drive, the walk to the building, the elevator ride to the 3rd floor, and all the way to my desk. I open my laptop to start working, but first, I decide… let’s check in with a bit of the news. The news. Are you as exhausted as I am? I just watched a video of Trump addressing the U.N. regarding North Korea… There may be some debate here, but I’m fairly sure that saying things like “…we will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea,” is not exactly how one deescalates a bad situation. Every

nation is made up of 2 parts: the government and the people. The two are not one in the same and need differential treatment. Now I’m distracted, and now I want to focus on local awareness, projecting an active voice in issues and policy that affect everyone on every level. And then I decide to take a break from it all with a little bit of mindless social media. Why would I ever think that was a good idea? Now I’m drowning in a comment thread over someone’s insensitive post. The never-ending discussion of freedom of speech or freedom of religion concerning bigotry; the riots in Charlottesville, Transgender individuals serving in the military, take your pick, there is no shortage of controversial issues and debates these days. And where do we draw the line? When do we chalk something up as freedom of speech/religion and when do we put our foot down to call a spade a spade? When it’s hateful, that’s when. And we should all damn well know the difference. But of course, that’s a conversation for a different day. My point with all this is it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by everything going on in the world. In turn, it’s easy to always look for an escape, something to turn a shaky landscape into a stable one. And there’s nothing wrong with that, to a point. There are countless conversations to be had, and although we can’t have them all, we should, at the very least be having one. So... choose your battles, but choose to fight for something. | FRESNOFLYER.COM |

FRESNO HUMANE // SPOTLIGHT

FRESNO HUMANE ANIMAL SERVICES Giving rescued animals a second chance at a happily ever after. by Amanda Allen

S

helter animals have been winning hearts over recent years - thanks to endless shares of adoption videos and stories of second chance rescues - driving people to leave breeders behind and instead, look to their local shelters. But even with the growing awareness, too often are animals abandoned, left without families to care for them. Deep in the trenches, working tirelessly to change the tide of the number of homeless pets in Fresno County is Fresno Humane Animal Services (FHAS). FHAS became Fresno County’s animal control agency on October 1st, 2015. FHAS staff is a collection of animal rescuers, top-notch veterinary staff and seasoned animal control officers who share a common goal: to be a true safety net for the County’s homeless & stray animal population. Our officers also protect community members from dangerous dogs running at large and actively promote spay/ neuter to combat the pet overpopulation crisis. As we approach our 2nd anniversary, we are proud to report an average live-release rate of over 85%, the highest in Fresno’s history. Even more remarkable is that FHAS has been able to provide quality animal control services and save thousands of lives despite being housed in the parking lot of the County’s abandoned morgue! How do we do it? Through a progressive and comprehensive approach to animal control, as well as massive doses of dedication and hard work. Our staff and vol-

unteers consistently go the extra mile to save lives by transporting dogs from our overpopulated valley to no-kill partner agencies in less crowded areas. For example, Fresno Humane has partnered with other local rescues and the Animal Humane Society in Minneapolis to send over 1,500 Valley Chihuahuas to new homes in Minnesota. Volunteers and local businesses recently joined forces to raise funds for a brand new transport vehicle. This new cargo van (it’s huge!) has greatly expanded our ability to get animals out of the shelter safely in large numbers. Closer to home, FHAS supports pet owners by offering low-cost vaccinations, microchips, and spay/neuter services at monthly clinics. Through our partnerships with local businesses, we actively promote responsible pet ownership, education, and adoption. HOPE Animal Foundation and Fresno Humane have teamed up to offer discounted spay and neuter services for County residents; dozens of public dogs and cats are transported to the hospital weekly for low-cost surgeries. Adoptable dogs and cats can be found every weekend at two Fresno PetSmart locations, as well as at Whitie’s Pets. Granville Homes has sponsored pet adoptions at Fresno Humane for the entire month of September with the goal of helping large breed dogs and scared small dogs get their shot at a happily-ever-after. This “Free-Fur-All” adoption promotion has been hugely successful thus far, and we couldn’t be more grateful!

More good news is in Fresno Humane’s future as a local donor is spearheading efforts to build a brand-new shelter for the County’s homeless pets in 2018. What will it mean for Fresno’s animals if this new shelter becomes a reality? It means we will be able to provide more comfortable accommodations and a higher quality of care for the animals in our custody. It means we will be able to help more pets find great homes. And it means that County residents will have access to a state-of-the-art community animal shelter dedicated to providing a full range of services. We can’t express enough how excited we are for our future!

LIFE \\ KNOW YOUR CHARITIES

HURRICANE RELIEF Know your Charities by Lisa Talley | lisa@fresnoflyer.com

N

atural disasters elicit a mix of complex emotions: horror, empathy, shock, and a deep-seated need to do something. For many of us, the options are few as we’re either unable to or unqualified to volunteer in a disaster area. Charities become best opportunity to lend a helping hand through donations. However, choosing which one to donate to can feel like a daunting task. Here are some tips to help you decide on an organization. •

Research your group – Take some time to read up on the organization’s history of rescue efforts. CharityWatch.org is an excellent resource for studying groups that accept donations, looking closely at how efficient that team is in using those donations directly towards the programs the donors support. CharityNavigator.org is also a great reference site for those looking to make donations. Local or National – Part of your research should include if that group is local to the area of the disaster. Do they have experience in that city or neighborhood? Do they employ locals or work with local organizations? Knowing their experience could help not only determine how efficiently they spend their funds, but also how efficient their rescue efforts are. Think Twice – before sending items like clothing or blankets. These types of donations take up space and divert resources to sorting, storing or cleaning these things instead of focusing on relief efforts. Making monetary donations allow the organizations to make sure they have what they need when they need it.

What Type of Training Gets Results?

T

he hardest thing about making a change from a not-so-healthy lifestyle to a more healthy one is first deciding to make a change. The second hardest thing is figuring out exactly how to do it. What gyms are in the area? Will it be a big box gym, a Crossfit box, a private studio, or maybe no gym and instead, opting for workouts at home? Does working with a personal trainer seem beneficial? There are many options available and can often become overwhelming in choosing what’s right. Different people will have more success with one type of training than another. It all depends on the individual need. Gyms are a good option for those that just want to use the equipment and do things on their own. An excellent program is that which changes as the person progresses The program, in the beginning, won’t and shouldn’t be the same after a year of working out. The weights should change, the number of reps should change, and in doing so, this in some ways is more optimal than other methods of a routine workout. A Crossfit box will do group classes and sometimes one on one personal training. The typical Crossfit box has coaches that teach the movements and also write the workout for the day on the board for those who go in during non-class hours. This workout is typically at a higher intensity than most other types of training, including more complex movements. A private studio will typically do group classes and some will do personal training. This is more private compared to big box gyms that may offer the same classes. There are also apps for smart phones, TVs, and also DVDs designed for doing workouts at home if being in a group or public setting is not the desired starting point. Working with a trainer can speed up the learning curve and ensure correct movements during exercise. He or she will help you understand the ‘why’ behind the things done in a gym and what to consider when you’re not in the gym. The one-onone training is usually individualized, and a trainer who is skilled and knowledgeable will adjust the workouts as necessary to help ensure progress. A coach or personal trainer should not just be counting reps and shouting motivational phrases. Instead, they should be teaching clients how to workout properly, what to be feeling, what to be aware of, how to eat in a way that aligns with their goals while also knowing which foods to avoid. Hopefully, this helps when it comes to deciding on what to do to achieve your goals. -Jesus Gonzalez is a NASM Certified Personal Trainer located in Madera, CA. National Preparedness Month: Keep Your Family Safe in an Emergency

(StatePoint) When it comes to emergency and natural disaster preparation, clean, uncontaminated water should be top-of-mind. September, which is National Preparedness Month, is an ideal time for individuals and families to make certain that they will be able to hydrate safely throughout the duration of an emergency. Natural disasters, such as tornadoes, floods and hurricanes, can compro-

mise local water sources. Flooding can be especially dangerous, when harmful bacteria and contaminants that transmit life-threatening diseases can be present in nearby waterways. Unfortunately, flooding can occur after a number of emergency scenarios, from heavy rains to hurricanes to situations when snow melts too quickly. “Contamination in fresh water sources continues to be a public health prob-

How Art and Poetry Can Help People Deal with Challenging Times

• Art therapy is a common treatment for those suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, adverse physical health conditions or psychological impairment. The creative process often gives patients an opportunity to explore feelings and develop self-awareness.

(StatePoint) Whether you are dealing with personal tragedy and loss in your life, or are concerned about current events, some experts believe that creating and appreciating art can help you cope with the emotional fallout of challenging times. “Art and poetry can be a beautifully effective outlet for dealing with tragedy or loss,” says J. Chester Johnson, a critically-acclaimed poet, essayist and translator of over four decades and author of the recently published book, “Now And Then: Selected Longer Poems.” Johnson, who worked on Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts and was a regular volunteer in the months following 9/11 at St. Paul’s Chapel (the Ground Zero relief center for recovery workers), wrote the iconic poem “St. Paul’s Chapel,” published worldwide, about endurance in the face of terror. His poem remains the memento card for the thousands of weekly visitors to the Chapel that survived the 9/11 terrorists’ attacks at Ground Zero, and more than a million poem cards have been distributed to-date. When one needs hope and healing, here are some ways you may find it through creativity and art.

• For those dealing with trauma, depression or other crises, keeping a journal is a way to regularly connect with one’s feelings. It also offers opportunities to be creative through verse, which Johnson says can be beneficial. “Acts of violence and mayhem often result in words being produced that describe, give solace or inspire,” he says. • When your mind is racing or you feel anxious, consider picking up an art project that allows you to relax. Whether it’s knitting a scarf or simply coloring, such activities can allow your mind to take on a meditative state. “Acts of violence and mayhem often result in words and art being produced that describe, give solace, or inspire,” says Johnson. “Poems occur where things happen and that’s where many people find comfort and assurance when dealing with challenging experiences.” And when such challenging experiences as natural disasters or terror attacks are

lem domestically and worldwide. During emergency scenarios, the issue is amplified as water can become unreliable for consumption,” says Alison Hill, managing director of LifeStraw, a manufacturer of water filtration systems. Consumers need to have the ability to filter their water following an emergency situation. Be sure your emergency supplies include a portable filter which can fit onto a wide variety of popular water bottle brands such as LifeStraw Universal. This versatile filter fits on most bottles you already own and offers two-stage filtration to remove 99.999999 percent of bacteria and 99.999 percent of protozoa, while also reducing chemicals, bad taste and odors. The LifeStraw Universal kit is available online and at specialty retail stores. “We’ve developed portable filtration technology to give consumers greater confidence that, in an emergency situation or natural disaster, they can have access to safe water for days, weeks, even months following a situation where their water supply is compromised,” says Hill. While most people don’t like to dwell on worst case scenarios, the right preparation can help you remain healthy and safe during an emergency. This National Preparedness Month; be sure that you equip your family with practical means to have safe drinking water.

experienced by many people, the sharing of comforting words and images often becomes widespread. “After 9/11, poems by W. H. Auden and Galway Kinnell that touched the depth of the responsive feeling to the terrorists’ attacks, circulated over the Internet,” points out Johnson. “At that time, my ‘St. Paul’s Chapel’ was also posted on many websites, sent from friend to friend and appeared on many a refrigerator door.” More information about Johnson and his poetry is available at jchesterjohnson. com, which offers details on his new book, “Auden, the Psalms, and Me,” a memoir and literary and historical commentary on the retranslation of the Psalms for the Episcopal Church. If you are facing a personal or public crisis and are looking for ways to cope with loss or trauma, consider how you may heal through art, poetry and creative expression.

Answers to last issue’s puzzles on page 19

Tips & Facts In honor of National Preparedness Month

1. In the event of a natural disaster (earthquake, hurricane, etc.) DO turn off the gas lines. “Electricity is knocked out a lot, but the gas stays on,” says Disaster Survival Expert Warren Faidley. Know where to find a wrench and which way to turn your gas gauge (lefty apparently isn’t always loosey) 2.DON’T try to gather all of your belongings in the event of an evacuation. Think about what you’ll take with you in three tiers of priority: the absolute essentials that you can grab in a minute (cell phones, pets, critical medications, glasses, Xbox), irreplaceable things that you could gather in an hour, and then lower-priority items that you’d only take if you had hours or days to prepare. 3. Batteries can last 10 times longer in LED flashlights.

6

4. Keep a colloidal silver generator. After a natural disaster, homemade colloidal silver will purify drinking water and will help fight infection and viruses when high-tech pharmaceuticals may be unavailable or ineffective. All hospitals use silver-based ointments to fight infection in severe burn victims, where traditional antibiotics are simply not enough to fight the infection over large areas of burned skin.

7. Keep a pet emergency kit on hand with food and other important items. The ASPCA recommends microchipping pets so they can be identified and returned to you even without tags (or you may want to invest in a GPS tracker so you can find them yourself ). The ASPCA app also helps you keep track of animal records required to board pets at an emergency shelter and has other helpful tips for a variety of situations.

5. Put together a 72-Hour Grab-and-Run Kit. Every family should have at least one Grab-and-Run kit that can be thrown in the car on a moment’s notice, or carried on your back, if the need should arise. Grab-and-Run kits should provide the basic emergency food, water, shelter, and first aid supplies that you and your family will need to survive the critical first three days after a disaster.

8. Fill your bathtub and tap off your toilets. After a major disaster hits, the public water system may be polluted or entirely shut down for weeks. Immediately fill your bathtubs, sinks, and other available containers with water. This will provide your household with a short-term supply of relatively clean, potable water.

6. Have a way to start a fire. Having a source of fire can help you stay emotionally and physically calm. A fire will help you stay warm, boil water and cook food. If possible, keep waterproof matches, a lighter and a magnesium fire starter in your 72-hour kit. Before starting any fire, assess your surroundings and decide whether or not it is safe to start a fire.

9. 42% of cell phone owners do not know all their family members’ phone numbers. During a disaster, you may not have your cell phone and if it dies, there may not be power. The CDC recommends writing down important numbers and storing them in an emergency kit, posting them on the fridge, and in your child’s backpack.

Fighting the Morning Clock? 9 No-Fail Ways to Get Out The Door On Time

(BPT) - As the sun shines through the curtains, you hit the snooze button again. Suddenly you bolt up, realizing you’re running late. You skip breakfast, grab your bag and rush out the door. Stress levels skyrocket and your day has barely begun. The race against the clock at the start of the day is a common problem. Mornings shouldn’t be difficult and certainly not something you dread. To get out the door on time and with a grin on your face, consider these nine no-fail tips. Bedtimes aren’t just for kids: A great morning starts the night before. A regular bedtime is as important for adults as it is for children. Go to bed with the goal of getting seven to nine hours of sleep, as is recommended for adults by the National Sleep Foundation. Use the night prior to your advantage: Mornings flow smoothly when you do a lot of prep work the evening before. That

means select outfits, pack bags and backpacks, and organize any paperwork before you hit the hay. Stock the fridge for health and convenience: It’s always smart to have delicious and nutritious ingredients in your fridge like fresh fruits, veggies and eggs. Eggs are especially versatile and packed with nutrition. Look for eggs with added nutritional benefits like Eggland’s Best eggs. In a hurry? Try Eggland’s Best Hard-Cooked Peeled Eggs for a ready-to-eat lunch or snack. Meal prep on Sunday: Another fridge-friendly tip is to do Sunday prep for the week. For example, chop up veggie spears or fruits and place in individual containers for easy grab-and-go snack options to pair with your hard-cooked eggs. Learn to love the alarm: Rather than just setting one alarm for waking up, try setting several to

keep your morning routine on track. For example, set one for when it’s time for breakfast and another as a five-minute warning for departure. Eliminate distractions: The fewer distractions you have, the better your chances of meeting the morning clock. That means resist the urge to check your smartphone or have a rule that the TV remains off until all morning tasks are complete.

1 tablespoon seasoned salt

Check it and forget it: It can be highly effective to make a specific list with morning to-do’s for you and your family members. As each task is complete, you get the satisfaction of marking it off your list, plus it keeps the morning moving quickly.
