Fresno Flyer Vol 3 No 1

EDITOR’S NOTE Hi. Did you miss us? You’ve probably noticed by now that we’ve changed something after four years of a grueling biweekly schedule, we’ve decided to condense our print to once a month. The decision came on like a light bulb, at a moment when the Publisher and I had a chance to breathe between issues. Running this paper has felt like we’ve been sprinting for four years without much of a break - one issue prints, we deliver across two counties, spend a couple days updating our online platforms, then go right back to writing, coordinating, and designing the next issue, print, deliver, … rinse and repeat for four years. Not a lousy tempo for a full-sized staff, but when you’ve only ever been volunteer-based with more fingers on one hand than full-time support, it’s a monumental feat to accomplish. Developing any longterm project, business or otherwise is more like a marathon than a sprint. Solid foundations are built with careful, concrete step-by-step decisions. We certainly can’t gas out now, there’s still so much more work to be done. And in all this time, we’ve been making changes based on what we thought was best for the Flyer and its readers. It never occurred to us that at some point it might clash with our advertisers - something we learned over two years ago when we changed

the paper’s name - but it helped us figure out a fundamental truth about ourselves. We didn’t want advertisers deciding our future and what kind of publication we were going to become - the shape of this paper will reflect the needs of the community, what the readers want, and lastly, what we think is essential. We’ve had advertisers make a stink over the fact that we wanted to start printing cover artwork because it made our front page unavailable for purchase. Some even fought the idea of our becoming an editorial because they believed that their demographic “doesn’t read articles.” The line in the sand, however, came when a business threatened not to work with us because we proudly covered the LGBTQ community’s Rainbow Pride Parade in Fresno. In our heart of hearts, all we want to achieve with the Flyer is connectivity. Some badass and amazingly original things are happening ALL THE TIME in the Central Valley, and we want to support it by sharing it with you guys - the community. Printing monthly instead of biweekly gives us the flexibility we need to keep on keepin’ on for the long haul and to provide issues jampacked with quality content that uplifts, serves, supports, and informs. That’s it. Oh, and to have a whole lot of fun while doing it, of course.

onstruction for the California highspeed rail closes roads leading into Chinatown, shutting off access for potential customers to businesses for a staggering minimum of 2 years. Ventura Ave, another primary connection to the downtown area is next on the schedule to close. Poised as one of the longest standing fixtures in Fresno’s Chinatown is Central Fish Co. Established in 1950, the family-owned business has seen the rise and decline of the once prominent and bustling downtown neighborhood – but even as the area has become an afterthought in the minds of many Fresno residents, Central Fish Co remains proudly as a cornerstone in Chinatown’s community. The fish market opened its doors just a few buildings away from their current location as a Japanese grocery store with no more than 1,000 sq ft – roughly the size of the restaurant area in their store today. As Chinatown saw rampant growth, so did the little grocery store and the need to expand soon followed in 1979. At the time, many urged the owners to move their business north, but Central Fish chose to stick with their community and moved into the much larger building that they still occupy today. “You know, we call it Chinatown for maybe, tradition’s sake but there are not many Chinese businesses in Chinatown. If anything, it should be Japantown,” shares Morgan Doizaki, Owner, and Operator of Central Fish Co, “The reason why Central Fish is [located] where it is, is because of the Buddhist temple that had been here since the early 1900s. We also have the Komoto building across the street, Union Bank which is still Japanese-owned … So, from Central Fish to the Temple, it’s a very Japanese street. Being part of a Japanese community is something I take pride in.” The Buddhist Temple moved their congregation to North Fresno in 2011. The decision has not only impacted the Japanese community on a deep and emotional level but economically as well. It was not uncommon for Central Fish to see over one hundred temple members in their store every Sunday. Losing hundreds of patrons every month was a considerable blow, and situa-

THE ANCHOR OF CHINATOWN tions only worsened at the closing of Kern and Tulare St to make way for the high-Speed rail construction. These main roads act as a bridge to Chinatown from the main center of downtown Fresno. Traffic is undoubtedly rerouted, but those less familiar with the area will have found a maze to reach Chinatown businesses rather than the straight-shot entry the roads initially provided. The closure also thwarts pedestrians, choking off even the well-established foot traffic of working professionals to Central Fish for lunch. Concerns only continue to deepen over the projected closing of Ventura Ave, which now acts as a detour for the blocked

off Kern St, leaving only Fresno St to serve as the main entrance to Chinatown. The streets will remain closed during the construction of the high-speed rail which is estimated to last at least 2 years. “They said the high-speed rail is not going to be ready until 2027, that’s a long time to wait. We [still] haven’t seen the worst of what’s about to happen. I look forward to the future, but the present is very serious,” says Doizaki. To help ease their plight, Central Fish has partnered up with other local Chinatown businesses to form ‘The Chinatown Fresno Foundation’ which is working to re-

ceive funding from either the high-speed rail or the city to help them through these transitionary years. A reasonable conclusion would be for the City of Fresno to make some kind of accommodating adjustment to the closures, but the decision doesn’t lay with them. The orders are coming down from much further up and outside even the state of California; Union Pacific Railroad. “In my opinion, Union Pacific is making life very difficult. No city planner would shut down what they shut down to affect Chinatown, but somebody who lives in Kansas is making decisions. I talk to people from the City and the County and even the high-speed rail, and they say this is one of the worst plans that was [obviously] not thought through,” explains Doizaki.

More Than A Fish Market The common misconception is that Central Fish is strictly a wholesaler, not open to the public. On the contrary, Central Fish Co provides a grocery store complete with fresh produce, specialty items such as Hawaiian and Cajun products, a fish counter, a smallscale restaurant and even a Daiso, all available to the general public. Daiso, a famous Japanese dollar store, is located up the stairs just to the left of the fish counter and everything is under $2. The restaurant portion of the store hasn’t changed its core menu of fish n’ chips, noodles, and chicken bowls since 1979. They do, however, add specials throughout the year depending on the season to include salmon (sockeye, coho, wild), halibut, and crab all available fresh from their in-house fish market.

Years have come and gone since Chinatown was last considered one of the most active and lively areas of Fresno. As the memories become shorter, fewer and further between, Chinatown has become a ghost in the minds of everyone else. But for those who live in its wake every day, there is a sadness and a glimmer of hope. Even though the traffic is lighter, and the faded markings of businesses long gone serve as a reminder of its former glory, the beauty of the neighborhood’s diversity, resiliency, and sense of community serves as a beacon to ensuring the survival of Chinatown long enough for it to see its own revitalization. Doizaki asks that people “Support Central Fish during this rough time – we’re trying to make the best out of a tough situation. Business is definitely down. Get the word out and support the Chinatown community.” --Central Fish is located at 1535 Kern St, at the corner of G St and Kern, open seven days a week from 9a to 6:30p Sunday through Thursday and til 7p Friday and Saturday. | FRESNO FLYER |

SPOTLIGHT \\ GREEK FEST

Fresno Greek Fest 58 years of Food, Fun, and Festivities! Fresno Greek Fest now has 3 new acres of shade!

N

ow one of the largest Greek Festivals in California, the Fresno Greek Fest draws visitors from across the state and beyond. Always the last weekend before Labor Day, it begins Friday evening and runs through Sunday evening. Each year the parishioners meet at the first of the New Year to start planning improvements and crafting the game plan that will feed and entertain a crowd that has grown to over 24,000 in attendance. While most visitors would agree, “it’s all about the food,” the festival indeed offers something for everyone. A good starting place is the docent-led tour of the St. George Greek Orthodox Church. Recently renovated stained glass, murals, and iconography are stunning, and it is truly one of the architectural and cultural treasures of Fresno. St. George Greek Orthodox Church of Fresno has a membership of approximately 250 families. Fresno’s Greek community founded the Church in the 1920s and welcomes all that wish to worship. Current membership is comprised of 40 percent Greek-Americans with the remaining 60 percent consisting of Romanian, Lebanese, Armenian and other ethnicities. Proceeds

from the Greek Fest will go to a variety of organizations; a neighborhood food pantry, children with cancer, prison ministry and the needy worldwide. St. George Greek Orthodox Church is a 501(c) (3) within the umbrella of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco. The Main Hall features a variety of Greek standards such as moussaka, spanikopita, and lamb shanks, while the Mega Tent has offerings to please any palate. Gyros, feta fries, souvlaki, loukaniko (a homemade Greek sausage made with orange peel-delicious!) plus Greek salad, appetizers and so much more cause for difficult decisions. But leave room for the pastries! There’s a myriad of choices- from traditional Baklava to Galaktoboureko,( a filo-wrapped, custard filled piece of heaven) or the “can’t eat just one” loukoumades (a puff of golden dough topped with nuts and honey) along with a cup of Greek coffee! Mindful of the potential for valley heat streaks, the entire paved area is now shade covered with fans and misters underneath! This is going to make a huge difference in the comfort of festival goers. Food booths have been streamlined and

offer various Greek delicacies, cutting down on time spent in lines. Parents have a wide variety of play area choices for children and even a convenient beverage booth close by. Then it’s time to dance off the delicacies! Fresno’s Greek Fest features two bands-the HoHLax trio, direct from Athens, Greece playing authentic acoustic and bouzouki music on the patio and the Olympians, an enormously popular Greek band playing Greek folk, classic and Modern Greek music. Dancing demonstrations will help you get into the rhythm and everyone dances with everyone! In addition to St. George’s own dance groups, authentic Greek dancers from all over the state have been invited to perform! Every region in Greece will be represented and, of course, everyone is invited to join in the fun. Did we mention shopping? The Agora, our outdoor Greek market art, jewelry, clothing, collectibles and so much more. A second Agora, featuring hard to find Greek ingredients, is located in the Main Hall. In ancient times, the agora was the central marketplace in most Greek citystates. Typically the agora was situated in the center of town. Governmental buildings,

| FEATURED | DINING | CALENDAR | MUSIC | CLASSIFIEDS |

| FRESNOFLYER.COM |

such as the council building and courts, surrounded the agora in Athens. The agora was more than a marketplace. People came to the Agora to discuss politics, meet with friends, as well as buy items from the market. The Taverna, a favorite meeting place for the younger crowd, has a wide selection of Greek spirits-wines, beers and of course, Ouzo! Grab a refreshment! Watch a cooking demonstration or just people watch. It’s a wonderful way to make new friends or reconnect with old ones! Great care goes into planning for the comfort, entertainment, and safety of festival goers. 24-hour security, cooling areas, and thoughtful choices for entertainment help festival-goers to come be “Greek for the Weekend” and to invest in the community! Proceeds from Fresno Greek Fest are dedicated to food pantries, food banks, soup kitchens and other charitable destinations. The event takes place on August 24 and continues until the 26th. Admission is only $5 if purchased online ($6 at the gate) and seniors (65+) and kids under 12 are free. For more information about tickets and volunteering, please visit www. FresnoGreekFest.com.

OPINION \\ ANTI-CAMPING ANNIVERSARY

The Zero Percent Solution By Will Freeney | memo247365@gmail.com

A

gentleman much involved in the charitable work arena once said, “The poor you have with you always.” It is not recorded that he added any comments about sending them to jail or fining them. It seems he was definitely right about that permanence thing though. As the first anniversary of Fresno’s passage of the Unhealthy and Hazardous Camping Act on August 17, 2017 approaches, it appears that there are, indeed, still homeless people in Fresno. Tarps and tents pop up individually instead of in clusters, and people sprawl in just their clothes or wrapped in a blanket in unused doorways or dumpster enclosures, under bushes or trees. Now the police are empowered to roust them, deprive them of their belongings, and take them to jail. Their alleged alternative is to bring offenders to a MAP (Multi-agency Access Point) for intake to housing, medical, and treatment services. However, MAP units are only open Monday through Friday during business hours. The likelihood of police arresting someone for “camping” on that schedule is minimal. Shortly after the ordinance went into effect, the stretches of canal levee that

had been populated were devoid of residents or any evidence of their presence – scraped clean right down to the dirt. Since then, the observable actions of police with regard to the homeless, as reported by the homeless as well, are to force them to pack up and move along rather than arrest and jail them. There are practical reasons for this – whether they are the rationale of the police or not – namely, more homeless than jail cells, temporary housing units, and beds. Those who supported the passage of the ordinance, when the discussion was heard before the City Council, cited public defecation and urination as the health hazard to which its official title alludes. It seems that provision of portable toilets for public use would be a much more direct solution than paying police officers $50,000 per year to corral these defecators and urinators. If they are going to be told to move along, they will still have to do those things somewhere. When you have to go, you have to go. Why not give them somewhere to go? In the case of a natural disaster, its victims are provided with shelter, food, showers. Homelessness is a natural social disaster. It is a result of our public policy to date.

Elder Paws to Host Annual Fundraiser on September 8 By Cathie Garnier | elderpawsfoundation@yahoo.com

an you imagine watching your canine family member of many years suffering from an illness or injury and not having the financial resources to ease their suffering? Such was the case for Penny’s family when their 15-year-old Miniature Pinscher was suspected of having a severe heart condition that needed immediate diagnostics and treatment. But struggling on a fixed income to cover their own medical expenses left Penny’s owners unable to afford the cost of the needed vet care. That is when Penny’s veterinarian referred Penny’s family to Elder Paws Senior Dog Foundation’s “Pandora Fund” a pet retention program. Elder Paws was able to help with the cost of diagnostics,

6

which confirmed a serious heart condition, as well as the medications that were needed to extend Penny’s life and keep her comfortable. Today, Penny’s condition has stabilized, and she continues to provide love and companionship for her owners, who think of her as “our child.” “We are so grateful for the help the “Pandora Fund” has provided us, and the extra time we have with Penny.” Penny’s situation is not an isolated one in a community where many pet owners struggle to cover the costs of necessary living expenses. Senior dogs suffer from many of the same health issues senior people do and, therefore, can be more costly to care for, especially when the condition has been

Homelessness represents a disaster and a socio-political fiasco. The presence of those among the ranks of the homeless with mental disorders can be traced to the closing of California’s mental health hospitals – augmented by the growing number of mental health cases created by substance abuse. If we want people off the street, then we should give them a place to go, not as a punishment or a deterrent but as a safe, secure interim home. Regarding social impact, the Unhealthy and Hazardous Camping Act has actually been counterproductive. The presence of the homeless in public places – albeit one per place more often – has increased. The very businesses whose owners supported the ordinance with their complaints of the unsightly presence of the homeless in their proximity are more likely to find the homeless in their doorways, alleyways, parking lots, and landscaping now that they have been dispersed from the canal levees. In terms of its economic effect on the homeless, the associated $1000 fine for the infraction would only add to the distress of the distressed. There are those who will say that homelessness is a “lifestyle choice.” Those who say that do not consider that you cannot acquire housing on the few hundred dollars per month that General Assistance provides, and that those dealing

with mental health issues and/or active addiction are not capable of holding a fulltime job, or that keeping a fulltime job at minimum wage scarcely provides enough to feed and house oneself, even without any other adverse conditions. What is required is a little compassion and a lot of conscious planning. The since-deleted tweet from the councilman who sponsored this ordinance, “Homeless GTFO,” will not do the job. Neither will his directive. Calling council members to advocate for rescission of the law is a start. Then the work of crafting a plan begins. Through either use of eminent domain or advantageous leasing, vacant properties could be acquired for homeless housing. Public toilets could be provided in strategic locations. Funding for adequate mental health and addiction treatment could be obtained. That little compassion could have exponential rewards. The gentleman quoted earlier was famous for it.

left untreated for a period of time due to the financial deficit. Those living on a fixed income, such as senior citizens, the disabled, and veterans, can find the cost of caring for their older companion animal’s medical issues overwhelming, causing them a deep sense of helplessness and hopelessness. Many “Pandora Fund” recipients never dreamed they would find themselves in a position to be unable to prevent pain in suffering in their furry family members, and express how grateful they are for those who support Elder Paws’ program, allowing them to get the help they need so their pet can live a longer, healthier life. Elder Paws, a 501c3 non-profit, acts as a safety net for families with senior dogs like Penny. By assisting with essential vet care needs fixed income families are able to keep their senior pets at home, providing a sense of comfort and relief for pet owners, whose only options to this point have been to keep their pet and watch them suffer or surrender them to overcrowded shelters where they

often are euthanized. Last year the “Pandora Fund” assisted 38 families in accessing essential vet care services and medication, and made referrals to partner organizations for pet food, vaccinations, and grooming services. But the need often exceeds funding, so donations are critical to the success of this program. Your tax-deductible donation can directly impact the lives of those with two legs and four legs. Donations can be made monthly, annually, or on a one-time basis thru their website. But it is only through the compassion and generosity of the public that this program is able to provide the help needed to our less fortunate neighbors in the community. You can also help by attending their 2nd Annual “Hearts of Gold” Fundraiser Sat Sept 8th at Classic Catering in Clovis, CA. Tickets are $50 each or $360/ table of 8 (deadline Sept 1st) and include dinner and live entertainment by Jeremy “Elvis” Pearce as well as a silent auction and cash raffle. RAW FRESNO // SPOTLIGHT

RawFresno Where healthy doesn’t have to mean hanging up your taste-buds. Fresh meals served from a fresh perspective. By Anglia Walpool-Greenwood | awalpool49@gmail.com

I

f you are looking to improve your health and lower your blood pressure in addition to shedding some unwanted pounds but don’t want a diet consistent of cardboard tasting, bland meals then RawFresno is the way to go. Chef Naomi Hendrix specializes in the most appealing and mouth-watering entrees, each dish is heart-friendly and freshly prepared with zesty flavor and unique texture. RawFresno is located inside the luxurious Galleria in Downtown Fresno at 2405 Capitol St #103. The restaurant sports a relaxed, laid-back type of quaint atmosphere with a display of flowers and artwork coupled with excellent service with a friendly smile. Hendrix’s journey to becoming the head chef at her own restaurant wasn’t light or easy. Her life took a drastic turn a little over a decade ago when her doctor diagnosed

her with dysbiosis, a condition in which the bacteria of the gut is out of balance, creating a disturbance in the digestive system. Hendrix’s doctor immediately recommended that she eliminate gluten, sugar, dairy, vinegar, soy, wheat, and all yeast products from her diet. With such a near-exhaustive list of ingredients found in just about every modern grocery item, Hendrix’s options were whittled down to fruits, vegetables, seeds, and a variety of nuts. But with necessity comes invention. Through diligent research, experimentation, and a few online classes that certified Hendrix as a Healing Food Specialist, she developed the beginnings of the original flavors and recipes that brands RawFresno today. Soon, Hendrix began to teach classes at Whole Foods, and members of the community took notice of her health-conscious

dishes. Kaiser, recognizing the immense value in nutrient-rich, yet limited ingredient foods, invited Hendrix, at no charge, to serve up her dished at their self-hosted farmers market. As the need and demand for her unique, hard-to-find, menu items grew, Hendrix wasn’t about to back down – she turned to Craigslist for an affordable food truck, and RawFresno was born. Traveling to multiple farmers markets roughly four times a week and favorite food truck gathering sites on the days in between, RawFresno continued to pick up traction. Now in her eighth year of business, Hendrix has added a home-based restaurant for the food truck. Fun Fact: the artwork on the wall of the restaurant’s name contains a mural in each of the letters that depict the story of Hendrix’s life with RawFresno from the beginning in the letter ‘R’ all the way to today in the letter ‘O.’ Andrew, a resident of Clovis who travels across town to partake of RawFresno’s genuinely original healthy selection, lists the wrap, hummus, and raw cracker combo as his favorites. “I was a little skeptical at first, but my wife convinced me to give it a try, and I

was pleasantly surprised by how flavorful and energizing the food was. The drinks, too, are rich with natural flavors and nutrients which seem to tingle my taste buds. After eating at RawFresno, I never feel sluggish or guilty about any of my food choices there. It’s just a truly refreshing place to enjoy a peaceful environment and a healthy meal,” he raved. RawFresno provides a variety of organic plant-based gourmet meals with super-nutritional values. Don’t forget to try out Chef Naomi’s mouth-watering desserts or the freshly made smoothies. I, myself, always enjoy a guilt-free lunch there. The entrees are filling, healthy, and delicious. For more information, you can check out RawFresno online at www.rawfresno.com

In fact, color is an important element in interior design not only for its aesthetic value, but also because it can shape perceptions and emotions. “Color is powerful - when you walk into a room, you can instantly feel its subconscious effect on your mood, your heart rate and even your appetite,” said color trend expert Janice Fedak. “That’s why it’s important to choose colors that ‘speak to you,’ express your unique personality and truly make you feel at home.” The experts at Elmira Stove Works offer these design tips, which take into consideration the psychology of some of the most popular colors for the kitchen.

One of the happiest colors on the spectrum, yellow is a lively hue that represents youthfulness and joy. It can inspire reflection and creativity, lift spirits and encourage optimism. Theater Into the Woods - Good Company Players Thursday, August 9 at 7 PM - 10:30 PM Roger Rocka’s Dinner Theater 1226 N Wishon Ave, Fresno. This brilliant mash-up of famous fairytales weaves a spell all its own with a magical score by Stephen Sondheim and mesmerizing book by James Lapine. As favorite storybook characters collide in “the woods”, Cinderella, Rapunzel, the Baker and his Wife, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (of Beanstalk fame), and a host of others are rudely awakened to post-happily-ever-after-reality. They fend off wolves, witches, and giants only to confront the evil within themselves. Witty and heartfelt, Into the Woods won Tony Awards for Best Music and Best Story and is an enchanting favorite for young people and adults alike. You’ll definitely want to lose yourself in these woods! PROOF - Good Company Players Thursday, August 9 at 7:30 PM - 9:45 PM 2nd Space Theatre 928 E Olive Ave, Fresno. Catherine has inherited her late father’s mathematical brilliance, but she is haunted by the fear that she might also share his debilitating mental illness. She has spent years caring for her now-deceased father, and upon his death, she feels left alone to pick up the pieces of her life without him. Caught between a new-found connection with Hal, one of her father’s former students, and the reappearance of her sister, Catherine finds both her world and her mind growing increasingly unstable. Hal discovers a groundbreaking proof among the 103 notebooks Catherine’s father left behind, and Catherine is forced to face her own inner demons. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, David Auburn’s Proof is a passionate, intelligent story about fathers and daughters, the nature of genius, and the power of love.
