EDITOR’S NOTE I may not always know if what I’m writing or printing is the best possible material of the moment, but I do know when never to apologize for it.

Our recent ‘Pride’ issue of the Flyer elicited some interesting feedback from the community throughout May and June.

The obvious balks against tolerance came in the form of a letter, a series of long-winded voicemails, and social media comments. Other types of indignant disapproval came in the subtler ways of lost subscriber numbers – to which I say, good, we won’t miss you.

But I do thank you.

These unprovoked bouts of hatespew, often masked in the guise of the ‘helpful Samaritan’ sent to rescue the souls of the damned, tells me only one thing – the Flyer is moving in the right direction. Yes, you read correctly. When the only complaint about our choices is rooted in intolerance, we know that we put our best foot forward. And that lights up our day, it becomes the motivation that acts as our beacon, guiding us along our path into the future.

It’s been 50 years since Stonewall – since the LGBTQ community fought back against oppression, and even though the battle is still waging, there has been massive victories to equality over the years. I have no

illusions about living in the reddest part of a blue state – but I am still surprised at the level of negativity that leaks out when the rainbow flag starts flying anywhere in the Valley. And while I find that overall fact disappointing, I take comfort in knowing that this whole area is changing, and for the better.

What also strikes me as odd is that over the years we’ve gotten increasingly vocal about socio-political issues here locally, sometimes even calling out members of the City Council or other public figures – yet, it’s crickets from the community. In fact, the few responses we’ve received to these op-eds and editorials have all been positive – no opposition, no scolding.

It makes things abundantly clear that we have some work to do with the Flyer. While our focus is mainly to support the Valley’s culture as it currently exists and track its momentum moving forward through music, entertainment, and arts – we have to build a stronger emphasis on supporting the underrepresented. There are those who are shameless in their efforts to stand in the way of progress, so we need to, likewise, be as bold and unapologetic in our stance to amplify the oppressed voices who have little or no platform.

And, of course, to make sure we put out a Pride issue EVERY year.

W

hen you first pull up to Dedication Tattoo in Armona, CA, you’re greeted by a rather unassuming-looking shop, sandwiched between a pizza place on the left, and a beauty salon to the right. However, once you open the doors and venture inside, you have just entered the unofficial museumof-the-mind of shop owner Chadley Rees.

Death Metal hemorrhages from speakers in the back, spraying the large, open studio in waves of aural carnage. On the walls, various samples of Chadley’s other artistic productions: oil paintings, charcoal sketches, painted skulls, and so on, hang like prime cuts in a meat locker. A halo of Marvel comics circles the top of the walls, representing some of Chad’s favorite stories and characters, such as Thor, Infinity Wars, and his favorite – Juggernaut. On the big screen TV could be playing anything from a Dodger’s game, to a YouTube video about comic books, to one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films. This is Chadley’s labor of love, and it represents not just a look at who he is, but also what inspires him.

“I’ve always been really into comic books and anime artists,” Chadley tells me, as he prepares his work station for his next appointment. Breaking down, sterilizing, putting it all back together, and getting everything ready to go. “And, of course, I was always fascinated with dark, evil, medieval types of themes. The first professional artist who inspired me to want to tattoo was Paul Booth.” Booth is a legend of the tattoo industry, whose trademark style is black and gray work and dark, evil themes. “Currently, I would say some of my biggest influences in the industry are Ben Kaye and Robbie

Latos.”

Like most originals, Chadley draws inspiration from his favorite artists but is always careful to respect their style. Potential clients looking for someone to “do something just like the one this guy did” will have to go somewhere else.

“Sometimes someone will bring me a picture of someone else’s work and ask me ‘can you throw this on me, just like how it is here?’ and I’ll tell them, ‘I can do something similar to that, in my own style or whatever, but if you’re looking for someone to just trace that on you, I’m not your guy, sorry.”

It was 13 years ago when Chadley first started tattooing, and he’s been making a living at it for 7. In 2006, he had a 1-year apprenticeship at a studio in Key West, Florida. There, he studied the traditional Asian tattoo style. He then moved to California and worked briefly at a couple of different studios in Fresno and Lemoore.

Ultimately, none of these places provided the right environment Chadley was looking for.

He was frustrated by what felt to him to be a lack of mutual support among artists.

“I want to work in an environment where everyone lifts each other up. Where artists support each other and freely exchange ideas. There are so much jealousy and negativity in this business, I want to work with people who want to see everyone succeed.”

And it was with that goal in mind, creating a place where other talented artists could ply their trade in an environment of positivity, creativity, community, and encouragement, that Chadley got together with some other local artists and opened | FRESNOFLYER.COM |

In the 4 years since Dedication opened, those other artists have left to pursue their own individual career goals. Walking through those doors today and into the big, open, clean studio, Chadley holds shop to the right while body piercer, Jason Perkins, sets up shop to the left. But there’s always space available for a local artist to show off their skills and be a part of the Dedication team. When I ask Chadley where he would like to see Dedication Tattoo evolve over the next 4 years, he tells me,

“I don’t have a financial goal in mind, you know? Like, I don’t think about it in terms of ‘I want to open 5 more shops’ or ‘I want to be doing these kinds of numbers each month’ or anything like that. What I want is to see Dedication continue to be a place where artists can come in and bring their own styles and elements to the shop, share their knowledge and techniques, come together and grow as an artistic community, and just continue to produce consistent, quality work and grow.”

As for where Chadley would like to see his own career progressing, “I really just want to continue to have opportunities to learn more and grow as an artist.”

Part of that growth for Chadley is continuing to focus on his other artistic endeavors besides tattooing. Namely, his painting and drawing. He sells his paintings through his Instagram page, ChadReesArt, and there are always loyal fans volunteering as a model for his art, or a canvas for “something new I want to try.” Chadley is

If Latino is not part of your past or history, can it be a part of your future?” asked Arte Américas, Casa de la Cultura, Project Manager, Nancy Márquez as she slowly guided me through the art exhibit.

“But Nancy,” I said, “I already am Latino … I think.” She looked up, connected with my eyes, smiled, and then proceeded to take me through her expertly guided tour of Caminos, Latino History of the Central Valley.

Located in downtown Fresno’s Cultural Arts District, Arte Américas sits firmly etched in the community directly across from the historic Fresno Met building, currently home to CMAC.

It was a real treat to have Mrs. Márquez personally escort me through the colorful exhibit – an extensive project designed by Tony Carranza, along with other team artists and partly funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

The project is led by historian, Dr. Alex Saragoza.

Nancy, as she prefers, knows everything about everything inside Arte, including, most likely, even the people who have contributed and continue to contribute to its ongoing success. She’s been at Arte Américas from its very beginning, over 30 years since the establishment opened its doors with a

mission to create a flourishing place for Latino art in the Central Valley. Interim Director, Lilia Chavez, is currently at the helm with Vivian Paz as Board President and Silvina Hernandez as Operations Manager. Nancy has served as Director multiple times in the past and now works in a reduced yet supportive and dedicated role as Project Manager.

Petite in stature, she is the personification of the phrase ‘big things come in small packages’ with her fierce intelligence and undeniably contagious and inspiring appreciation for Latino culture.

Caminos, the Spanish word for “roads,” highlights seven different periods seven different connecting paths. This art exhibit is spread throughout multiple mini-art gallery spaces that act much like an interconnected museum exhibit with rich information and history to accompany each piece of artwork or artifact on display. The Caminos experience also includes video footage featuring over 20 hours of documented interviews.

The first camino in California’s Central Valley Latino history is called the “Spanish Period,” and it begins in 1772 when Spain started sending expeditions into the Central Valley to find Native Indians for their coastal missions. Before 1772, the Central Valley was undisturbed by outsiders and inhabited only

by Native Indians. Next is the second camino which involves 26 years referred to as “The Mexican Period,” abruptly ended in 1848 as a result of the Mexican-American War. The third period, a time of transformational change here in the Valley emerged in the “Gold and Gringos” wild west “Spirit of Joaquin Murrieta” era that culminated in 1900.

Inspiration for the Caminos exhibition was rooted in social awareness, or lack thereof, for the 247-year Latino history in the Central Valley. And the truth of the missing recognition hit home during the 2017 Fresno County Fairgrounds display of local history – there were little if any Latinos represented at all. A shocking discovery for people like Nancy and other allies across Fresno County that drove them to the realization that something ought to be done to help change this cultural misrepresentation of Fresno.

because you can’t really afford to turn down business. Whereas in a big city, an artist can focus on developing their ‘signature style’ and just doing that particular style of tattoo, and if their work is good and people like it, the business will just keep coming.

It’s not like that here. I would love just to do skulls and decay and darkness and evil and all that, but you gotta do those infinity knots and butterflies on the ankles if you want to pay the rent.”

Despite these unique challenges, Dedication Tattoo continues to carve out space for itself in the South Valley. July marks their 4th anniversary, and Chadley says they have a lot of different promotions and events planned to celebrate the milestone with the clients and community that has helped make it all possible. “I love the small communities here.

I love to work with the same people. That return business, that loyalty, it means so much to me. Knowing that they were happy enough with what I did for them that they want to keep coming back to me with all of their ideas and projects because they trust my ability to turn their vision into a finished product. It’s crazy, I’ve been doing this long enough that I’m starting to tattoo the sons and daughters of some of my first clients. It’s very humbling to get that kind of love from people, and I appreciate all of it so much.’

Alright, so then what don’t you like about tattooing down here?

“The small community, haha!

It’s really a double-edged sword, man. The downside is that there just isn’t a very big client pool compared to big cities. That kind of forces you to have to be good at everything

A BAD VEGETABLE PART I

L Meet SLASH, this poor dude came in as a stray in dire straights. He had puncture marks throughout his body, a lip hanging by the thread, teeth that were filed down, and a very skinny body. With a little medicine, tons of food and TLC, Slash has become quite the pooch. He is sweet, loves to cuddle humans, and loves the ladies. He is crate trained, learning manners, and is cuddle-ready. ast month’s anonymous violent threat made in a Facebook comment against LGBTQ nightclub, FAB Fresno in the Tower District, was very unsettling. Aside from the threat itself, the commenter also directly referenced the massacre that terrorized Pulse Nightclub – an LGBTQ nightclub in Orlando, FL - where 49 people were slaughtered by a lone shooter almost exactly 3 years ago in the summer of 2016.

“Change the name of this club to pulse (sic) nightclub since you will share the same fate,” was the post made by a profile named “MAGA Shooter.” Quickly following was another post by the same account but this time it was a memorial photo of Pulse’s massacre – in case the threat needed to be made any clearer for anyone who missed the reference.

Pretty scary stuff in today’s climate of mass shootings and endemic culture of gun violence.

But in a news conference about the threats, Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer reassured the public that “… we take those threats very, very seriously…” and he further explained how his team of detectives worked relentlessly to find the person behind the “MAGA Shooter” profile.

And it wasn’t an easy feat either since, like most cowards with guns, this “MAGA Shooter” quickly deleted the comments and profile, and then tried to disappear. But the Internet doesn’t work like that, and neither does the FBI. Chances are if you threaten an act of mass terror and violence, they will track you down and find you. And that’s precisely what happened.

I’m sure there’s no surprise here that this “MAGA Shooter” was male, we rarely hear of threats and acts of violence perpetrated

by women, but what was his reason for this threat?

Also, unsurprisingly, it was something idiotic. The perpetrator, a 28-year-old Latino from Selma, made the threat because he was mad about the video posted by FAB Fresno showing his girlfriend’s mother – a middle-aged white woman who has been dubbed “Nightclub Nancy” by the club – acting unruly while drunkenly shouting slurs at patrons and the club’s owner after being kicked out for inappropriate behavior. So, naturally, he threatened a massacre.

There’s no reason ever to make such a threat, but to flippantly make one based on bruised pride is a scary look at the depths in which some feel a sense of entitlement. It was a “How dare they” response to the bigoted and foolish actions by a grown woman that should have been reprimanded, certainly not defended. Where is the sense of responsibility?

Scarier still is that the threat wasn’t empty – when the FBI and FPD arrested this “MAGA Shooter,” they discovered a thousand rounds of ammunition and several firearms at his residence, which means he was absolutely prepared to execute his threat. Of course, now, he’s denying that he ever intended to carry it out.

Chief Dyer wasn’t buying. At the news conference, he said, “the message today is, we don’t have a crystal ball in law enforcement to determine whether or not threats are going to be carried out … but I can tell you, we have prevented what could have been a mass shooting in our city if, in fact, that was the intent … thankfully, nothing did occur.”

The Chief is right. And the other message of the day is that even if your last

name means “lettuce” in Spanish, your violent threats will be taken seriously. That’s right, the “MAGA Shooter” was finally identified as Mr. Jose Isabel Lechuga – or Mr. Lettuce. It’s an unassuming, non-threatening sounding name, and I’m sure he may even have some cabbage or cucumber cousins that are equally unassuming on the surface – but rest assured the FPD has no problem arresting any Mr. Lettuce/Potato-head type if it means making Fresno a safer place.

All jokes aside, Mr. Lechuga’s vile threat was a litmus test for society, and FPD’s response was perfect.

Still, the question lingers in the background: why did Lettuce-Head reference Pulse Nightclub? Did he feel that his threat against FAB Fresno was partially justified or somewhat socially acceptable simply because its patrons are Queer? It sure seems that way.

What I am trying to understand is why some people in our society are fine with threats of violence - or even acts of violence - against LGBTQ people. The answer, I suspect, runs deeper than the surface and is rooted in a disturbing notion that LGBTQ people are a subset of societal undesirables.

As the saying goes, a bad apple can spoil the bunch. And, in this scary FAB Fresno ordeal, the same is true for vegetables, it seems. Yet, merely blaming, punishing or even removing a bad vegetable from the mix won’t fix the problem - because it is our very culture and social environment that have provided the perfect conditions that have ultimately engendered and fomented these bad characters in the first place.

2 medium cucumbers, peeled

1 clove garlic, minced

1 1/2 cups whole milk Greek yogurt

2 teaspoons chopped fresh dill weed

1/2 teaspoon sea salt

Grilled Pork Kebabs with Tzatziki Sauce

In food processor, process cucumbers and garlic until finely chopped. Drain liquid from cucumbers. Stir cucumbers with yogurt, lemon juice, dill, sea salt and pepper.

Refrigerate until ready to use.

Prep time: 25 minutes Cook time: 10 minutes Serves: 6

1 Smithfield Roasted Garlic & Herb Pork Loin Filet, cut into 1 1/4-inch cubes 3 small zucchini squash, cut into 1/2-inch thick slices 2 large red bell peppers, cut into 1

Heat grill to 375 F. Alternately thread fresh pork cubes, zucchini, peppers and onions onto bamboo skewers. Brush kebabs lightly with olive oil.

Grill fresh pork skewers approximately 10 minutes, turning occasionally, until char marks form and pork is cooked through.

1/4 cup finely chopped green onions Heat charcoal or gas grill to medium; spray grates with nonstick cooking spray. Grill tenderloins until internal temperature reaches 150 F, turning occasionally, about 20 minutes.

Brush both sides of potato slices with oil; grill 15-20 minutes until just tender, turning occasionally. Remove potatoes and pork from grill.

Top potatoes with cheese, sour cream and onions. Serve with tenderloins cut into 1/4inch thick slices.

to Play Strummer’s July 23 O

n the road for their three month long ‘Lucky 7’ tour, Hinder has Fresno in their sights with plans to take over Strummer’s stage on July 23.

The post-grunge, hard rock band recently released a single entitled “Halo,” their first new music since the 2017 full length release The Reign. The band plans to release their seventh studio LP later this year that will be the first they do completely on their own terms. Drummer, Cody Hanson explains: “We’re excited about releasing the next album, but in a different way than usual. We’ve never had the opportunity before to completely control every aspect of the creative process until now.

We’ve worked really hard to get to this point and we can’t wait to share the outcome with our fans!”

Cody also took some time out of the band’s busy schedule to answer a few quick questions from the Flyer.

CH: It is liberating. While it’s nice to have a team that handles the little details, it’s also nice to have complete creative control.

Hinder has stood the test of time (debuting almost fifteen years ago), what would you say is the backbone of that kind of success?

CH: I think everyone has that “holier than though” person in their life. There are a lot of hypocrites out there. Hopefully the message will get through to some people and help them to reflect upon themselves.

You’ve been on the road a few weeks now, how are you all holding up?

CH: Personally, I think it would have been amazing to see Buddy Holly play a show.

CH: We’ve done 27 shows in 30 days so this one has been a little grueling, but we’re on a two week break before we head back out so we’re good!

Any post-show rituals?

A recent article in The Washington Times stated that the band is currently not bound by a record label - it sounds liberating, is it?

CH: I think our experience is definitely an asset. Everyone in the band has a role to play and they handle it without an ego. That’s pretty rare in a band.

Any pre-show rituals before hitting the stage?

CH: We always try to clear the bus an hour before the show to make some drinks, crank some music and warm up to get in the right headspace.

If each of you could play a show with any band, past, present, living or dead, who would you want to jam with?

CH: We usually just take some time to towel off, have a drink or two and discuss the show to see if there is anything we can improve.

What drives you in the studio to write and keep writing?

CH: The fans. There aren’t too many things that feel better than when a fan comes up and tells you how your song has positively impacted their life.

It’s been 2 years since the last album - how much longer do fans need to keep waiting?

Any hints you can give about a new album?

CH: That’s the great thing about doing this independently. We will release the album once we feel it’s worthy of our fans. Until then, we can release new music on a song by song basis.

“My dog never leaves my house.” “My yard is secure.” “My dog always has an ID tag on.” “My dog is an inside dog.” We have heard all these things numerous times from pet owners who are coming in looking for their lost pet. Unfortunately, things happen: someone accidentally leaves the gate open, a house is broken into, a dog is spooked by fireworks- the list goes on.

Sometimes pets are not found for months or even years, but a microchip can help reunite a pet with their owner or provide closure to what would have otherwise remained a horrible mystery.

Roxy, a shepherd mix whose family had decided to microchip her before she went missing in 2017. Fast forward to April 24, 2019- Fresno Humane received a call to pick up a stray dog that had shown up in a yard in Fresno County. When the officer arrived to pick up the dog, the first thing he did was scan her for a microchip.
