EDITOR’S NOTE It’s easy to lose sight, during the holidays, of what’s an accurate display of our love to friends and family. We are often swept away by brand names, new versions of all technology, and the total dollar amount we can afford to spend on each person. We are, without a doubt, a consumerist culture. However, I’m not going to spend this note talking on how we should attempt to change this that would be damn near impossible without decades of constant effort - rather, if we insist on continuing on the insane path of ‘money = affection’, let’s at least inflict as much ‘good’ on the world as we possibly can. That probably felt a bit harsh, no? ‘Money = affection’... it doesn’t, and we all know that, but it doesn’t stop us from FEELING that way. Americans are a product of their environment, and the landscape here belongs to the brilliance of marketing - it’s everywhere we turn. We simply cannot help ourselves. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to make our loved ones happier through the act of gift giving - so long as you’re not running yourself ragged or, worse, into crippling debt to do it. So, assuming that you’ll be as kind to yourself as you will to your loved ones, let’s take a look at how you can also pump a little

light back into the world with all that shopping this holiday season. Support local! ... are you surprised? Yea, I know, not a terribly original thought, but it doesn’t make the point any less valid. Most of you reading this are already staunch supporters of many local businesses, i.e. coffee shops and restaurants. However, something happens when Black Friday and Christmas appear just around the corner - we immediately jump to major conglomerates like Amazon, Target, the dreaded Walmart, etc. We forget to look for those small and local businesses who can offer the very things we look for. I’m not saying to change your tactics completely. What I am saying is to choose one item that you would normally go online or to a major commercial chain for and see if there isn’t a local who can offer you the same thing. Because I can guarantee there is a place in the Central Valley who would love to make sure you get that perfect gift. Make it your mission, since you support local already (right?) to get one essential item (or try to at least) on your list from a small business. The money you spend not only showers affection on the one you love, but it also stays here in the local economy, helping to build up the ever-disappearing middle class.

The Water Lantern Festival By Will Freeney memo247365@gmail.com

H

ere it is, November. Fall is underway. Leaves have fallen and seasonal holiday merchandise has been placed on the shelves. If you enjoy dressing up for Halloween or decorating the house and welcoming guests for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanzaa, or any other upcoming holiday, this may be your favorite time of year. If, on the other hand, you dread the holidays as The Invasion of the In-laws and pray for the grace to withstand paying for presents for, preparing food for, and cleaning up after people you may not see again until this time next year, this may be your least favorite season. If you worry that you will be by yourself, with all the restaurants closed, Thanksgiving and Christmas probably aren’t on the top of your annual event list either. Here’s a season-improving tip regardless of which category you belong in: Water Lantern Festival. The spirit of all these holidays is to bring joy to children, gratitude, and appreciation to adults, and familial bonds for all. Right? Well, the Water Lantern Festival is a modern, American development of Toro Nagashi (“Floating Lantern” in Japanese) which is held at the end of Obon (honoring ancestors) in August every year. The lanterns are made of wood and paper and set alight and afloat, to send the ancestors back, with good fortune, after their annual visit for Obon. (Sound like loading your relatives with leftovers as they get in their cars after Thanksgiving dinner?) Toro Nagashi was instituted as a post-War “Festival of Recovery” in Tokyo beginning in 1946 on the Sumida River. It continued there until 1965 when new flood walls got in the way and resumed in 2005 when waterside terraces were constructed along the river. The popularity of the event led to the participation of thousands of locals and visitors. Its propagation beyond Obon now includes celebrating other memorial

events, such as the anniversaries of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki with the first and to-date only strategic use of nuclear weapons summarily ended World War II in the “Pacific Theater,” but it was also the death knell at the end of a long symbolic death march for the Japanese populace. The ongoing traditional bombing had compounded the privations forced on the people as part of their “contribution to the war effort.” The landscape of Japan was a hellish rubble of destruction. Coming back from that was what the “Festival of Recovery” was about. Well, now Toro Nagashi has been replicated and expanded as the Water Lantern Festival (happening at multiple locations nationwide – from Long Island to Los Angeles, Dallas to Detroit) at Woodward Park on Saturday, November 10th. Shinzen Friendship Garden, a pocket of stately and serene beauty in the form of

a traditional Japanese landscape garden, is located in the middle of the otherwise typical rolling hills that constitute Woodward Park, at the edge of the San Joaquin River. Entering the park from the East Audubon Drive entrance, bear right at the fork of Yosemite Road, passing the driveway for the Rotary Amphitheater parking lot on the left. Shortly after that on the right is the parking lot for Shinzen Friendship Garden. Parking in that lot is limited, so arrive early or be prepared to do a little walking. For $30 ($40 day of event) you receive admission to the Festival, your own lantern, a marker to decorate it, a commemorative bag, a wristband, and an opportunity to make new friends, listen to good music, eat from a variety of food trucks, and send your loved ones who won’t be joining you in person this year your thoughts, prayers, and love in a serene, joyous ceremony that will become an incandescently beautiful memory. When you toast those not at the table this year for Thanksgiving and all the following holidays, you can think of your water lantern, sending light and love from you to them, wherever they are. The Water Lantern Festival is a part of One World LLC, that has been hosting events all over the world since 2012. This year, they wanted to host an event to promote unity, love, remembrance, and peace while bringing the community together for an unfor-

gettable night. The Water Lantern Festival accomplishes all of that. As Water Lantern Festival spokesperson, Mike Schaefer, put it, “This is a time that we can come together, love one another, heal ourselves. Reflect on your life, share your dreams, and feel the peace of all those around you, as you observe the lanterns’ reflection upon the water.” Sound like your kind of party? Gates open at 3pm, providing access to the festivities – music, food, merriment. Lantern decorating begins at 6pm, with launching from 6:30 to 7:30. The event concludes at 9pm. Visit the website to see photos of the Water Lantern Festivals past and to get your tickets for this year’s Water Lantern Festival at Woodward Park. https://www.waterlanternfestival.com/index.php. Jumpstart your holidays with some luminous love. If you want to make it a Shinzen Weekend, come back for Champagne Brunch in the Garden from 11:00 – 1:00 on Sunday, sponsored by Shinzen Garden and Cultural Arts Rotary Club. $35 ($45 day of ) will provide you with a complimentary glass of champagne and brunch, including orange juice (mimosa anyone?) and coffee. Proceeds benefit the Garden, Educational & Youth Cultural Arts Programs. To learn more and purchase tickets, visit the Shinzen Garden website: http://www.shinzenjapanesegarden. org/. Handcrafted chocolate from scratch, directly from cacao beans. Their single origin chocolate bar is multi-dimensional in fine flavors and the ingredients list is short - only 3 ingredients, as a matter of fact. With the weather cooling down, they will start offering hot chocolate in November. The drink is made from the same high-quality chocolate that they use to make their chocolate bars, so it’s a far cry from the typical sugary hot chocolate made from cocoa powder. For holidays season, they’ll also roll out the chocolate bonbons. These are colorful chocolate treats with ganache filling, perfect for holiday gifts. When asked what made their business unique, they had this to say, “Our business is unique because we invite people to come and see our process from zero to finished products on our monthly chocolate factory tour. No secret recipe, no secret ingredients. You see everything and ask all kind of questions to the chocolate maker. The 121st annual gathering will feature lunch at $15 per person, with seasoned beef filet kebab or garlic chicken kebab, rice pilaf, cheese boureg, garden salad, pickled tourshee, fresh peda bread, paklava, among the offerings. Photographs, paintings, and artifacts depicting a century and 21 years of Central California ministry will be on display during the culinary event. Meals will be available to guests for dine-in, take-out, or drive through. The

drive-through lane will be located on the Raisina Street side of the Church Campus, one block west of First Street between Huntington Boulevard and Balch Avenue. More information is available by calling (559) 237-6638, faxing (559) 2379526, or e-mailing administration@fapc. net. The autumn food bazaar marks the 25th Anniversary of the publication of “A Hundred Years and Still Cooking,” the FAPC Fidelis Women’s Society Centennial recipe collection. First published in 1993 by H. Markus Printing, the 496-page volume includes instructions for preparing 636 different ethnic recipes and sells for $35. Food writer Barbara Hansen, a James Beard Award winner, reviewed the volume in the January 14, 1998 edition of The Los Angeles Times under the headline, “Leaves from Fresno.” The cookbook is a unique compendium of heritage recipes, Scriptural truths, Old World culinary precepts, and

Central California ethnic history. The Merchants’ Lunch Country Store will be open throughout the luncheon hours for holiday shopping. The Store will offer such ethnic delicacies as choreg, souberag, paklava, yalanchi, bottled grape leaves, gutah, tourshee, rojik, and basdegh. The abundant produce of the San Joaquin Valley and a host of homemade breads, jellies, and pastries will round out the comestibles in the Store pantry. Reverend Gregory Vahack Haroutunian and Reverend Mgo Mekredijian comprise the FAPC Teaching Elder Leadership Team. Lisa Tokatian, Maryvonne Gagliardi, and Jonelle S.G. Kazarian are Co-Chairs of the 2018 Merchants’ Lunch and Country Store. Chartered by 40 immigrants in a rented hall on July 25, 1897, FAPC was the boyhood church of authors William Saroyan and A.I. Bezzerides and documentary filmmaker J. Michael Hagopian. Six generations and 12 decades later, FAPC is a multigeneration-

al congregation drawn from the Old and New Worlds. FAPC is a member congregation of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church and the Armenian Evangelical Union of North America. The 121st Anniversary theme of the congregation is “Love Christ. Love Others. Make Disciples.”

3 Ways to Give Back This Holiday Season

(StatePoint) Want to give back this holiday season? There are many ways to get into the charitable spirit. And if you need some inspiration for how to go about benefitting those in your local and global community, consider the following ideas.

Serve a Holiday Meal Food is one of the most fundamental ways to show you care, and, delicious food and the holidays go hand-in-hand. Consider serving a warm holiday meal to someone who needs it. There are many ways to do this, such as preparing a meal at home and delivering it to a sick or elderly neighbor, inviting a colleague or friend who doesn’t have family in the area to your home for a holiday meal, or volunteering in a food pantry to serve a meal to other members of your community. If these efforts are not possible, look for a canned food drive near you and pick up some extra groceries to donate when shopping.

Give Access to Safe Water

Give a gift to a loved one this season that’s not only thoughtful for him or her, but also benefits the community at large. One great way to do that is through the gift of water. Due to microplastics and other common water contaminants, safe drinking water is not necessarily a given these days. However, you can provide someone you love with at-home and on-the-go access to safe drinking water with a LifeStraw water filtration product. Helping to reduce plastic waste by providing an alternative to single-use bottles, you’ll be making a global difference. What’s more, for every LifeStraw product purchased, including LifeStraw Go 2-Stage Special Edition, LifeStraw Universal and LifeStraw Play, one child in a community in need receives safe drinking water for an entire school year. LifeStraw provided its one millionth child with safe drinking water in Kenya in 2018. And new special edition bottles benefit the Conservation Alliance, a public lands conservation organization, and LifeStraw’s Safe Water Fund, which supports natural disaster

victims by providing them with safe drinking water.

Give Life Did you know that the simple act of donating blood can save a life? Indeed, one pint of blood is all that’s needed to save three lives, according to America’s Blood Centers. Make an appointment at a local blood bank. It takes just about 10 minutes, and afterwards

you can feel good about the potential difference you’ve made. Another way you can be a life saver is by ensuring you are a registered organ donor. Use the holiday season as an opportunity to add your name to the National Donate Life Registry. Before stringing lights or adding tinsel to the tree, you can truly get into the holiday spirit by finding meaningful ways to give back.
