EDITOR’S NOTE Did you ever catch that article about Fresno in The Atlantic? It said that we were creating “California’s New Bohemia,” that we were parallel to “Oakland rather than San Francisco” or “Baltimore rather than Washington.” And we were changing the minds of all the outsiders looking in because of our toughas-nails, do-it-our-damn-selves, pioneering artists. We print this magazine because we believe in Fresno and the Central Valley, you read it because you recognize a like mind because you also see all of the underappreciated, unsung talent thriving and growing on our small stage, and just below the radar. But we only have this kind of passion for our hometown because artists gave us a reason to nurture one. These writers and performers saw a blank canvas when most of us just saw a stalled economy and poor air quality. They gave us an unofficial anthem by reflecting back to us what we could always feel but never see; a bootstrapping toughness born out of the kind of hard-working grit that only comes from trying to make something from nothing in this forgotten Valley. You think New York started that way? Or that San Francisco was always the epicenter of hip trends and culture? People

had to build it, and it took time – California was perceived as a raw, uncivilized frontier before Hollywood flipped it upside down. Those visionaries saw something great when no one else could, fighting through ridicule every step of the way, to ultimately create what the modern world will forever idolize. Our artists are trying to do the same

thing. I know there are some who will say that the booming tech in Fresno is a contributor to uplifting our collective status – but they would be wrong, the tech is a recent trophy. The arts have earned the hard-won title, cultivating a unique culture in our rural, redin-a-blue-state, Valley. The kind that’s helped us gain national recognition long before tech companies saw the economical price tag on this Silicon Valley alternative. The point to all this is, love your local arts. We’ve dedicated this entire issue to supporting our local artists in the hopes that you will, too. When these guys and gals take the stage, they give a piece of themselves to that performance, laying it all out on the table for you – give back by showing up. There is a whole hell of a lot of things to choose from in here, all you need to do is pick one. I promise it’ll go a long way.

he Rogue Festival, Fresno’s completely uncensored theater and performing arts festival, will return to the Tower District March 1-9. This year’s 18th annual Rogue Festival will present over 250 separate performances of theater, music, dance, comedy, spoken word and magic from 53 performing groups in 11 different venues. But the most important thing about the Rogue isn’t its size or variety, but it’s freedom for both performers and audience, says Rogue Festival’s new executive director Amber Strid. The Rogue Festival is built on a principle that there should be no censor, no curator, no selection committee standing between the artist and the audience. The Festival does not choose who can or cannot participate. There are no restrictions on what performers can say or do, outside of safety codes and legal matters. For the audience, this is the one event in the San Joaquin Valley where they can see raw, uncensored, unmediated performance — and only the audience gets to say what’s good or what’s bad by leaving reviews and spreading wordof-mouth. While previous Rogue Festivals accepted all applications on a first-come, first-serve basis, this is the now holds a lottery to allocate performing slots randomly and fairly. Returning to the Rogue this year is the “Artists’ Underground” program, which allows performers who didn’t make it through the lottery to create their own venues in commercial spaces, local businesses and backyards. Five performers took advantage of last year’s Artist Underground. This year that number has expanded to twelve. “We’re very excited that the Artist Underground program is being taken advantage of by artists who are willing to take risks and put up their own shows. That was Marcel Nunis’ original vision for the festival when he founded it in 2002. We glad to see more artists embodying that DIY, punk aesthetic and doing it for themselves,” says Strid. Nunis is not just the founder of the festival, he is also this year’s Muse. Strid and co-director Vince Warner opted to honor Nunis by making him the face of this year’s festival. The Muse is the image used as the poster and program cover and is chosen each year by the director of the Festival to represent the spirit of creativity throughout

our community. Nunis also has a show in this year’s festival called “Lies My Father Told Me.” In its 18th year, the Rogue Festival is now one of the oldest festivals of its kind in the United States and has built a nationwide reputation for Fresno as a city that celebrates the arts.

ABOUT THE ROGUE FESTIVAL The Rogue Festival is one of the oldest and best respected Fringe Festivals in the western United States and part of a worldwide movement of Fringe theater festivals around the world, celebrating the independent artist rather than established arts institutions. The Rogue is Fresno’s home for

edgy, uncensored, avant-garde performances you won’t see anywhere else. Many of the acts in the Rogue are original works that are written and performed for the first time by the artists performing them, so Rogue audiences enjoy art they’ll never experience anywhere else. Audiences at the Rogue Festival will have their pick of an incredible variety of entertainment, with shows happening simultaneously at eight different Tower District venues. Rogue Festival performances are presented in rapid rotation — no show is longer than one hour, and intermissions between shows are only a half-hour. Most Rogue shows cost $12 or less, so the ideal way to experience the Rogue is to see multiple shows during every day of the festival. The mission of the Rogue Festival is to eliminate all barriers between the independent artist and the audience. The Rogue is a non-curated festival, meaning that Rogue Festival staff do not select the acts that perform at the Rogue. All applications to perform in the Rogue Festival are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. No one controls what’s in the Rogue, so it is a true First Amendment zone — you can see the greatest show ever, you can see the worst show ever, and you will definitely see shows that will challenge your comfort zone. The Rogue Festival is also a nonjuried festival, meaning that no prizes are given and there is no judging of content. The audience decides for itself what it likes and doesn’t like, so the Rogue Festival encourages word-of-mouth and online reviews from audience members. The other mission of the Rogue Festival is to eliminate barriers between independent artists and their earnings. One hundred percent of all ticket sales goes directly to performers. The Rogue Festival, a registered 501(c)(3) organization, supports itself through sales of Festival wristbands, individual contributions, and sponsorships. Tickets to Rogue Festival performances can be purchased online in advance or at the door starting 30 minutes before each performance. The Rogue Festival draws 3,000 audience members into the Tower District, most of whom combine their Rogueing with dining, drinking and shopping at Tower District businesses, creating a sizable contribution to the local economy.

Fresno Band, Haunt, is a Throwback to Metal’s Golden Years Article & Photo by Steven Sanchez | stevenmychal@yahoo.com

I

magine if British metal heavyweight, Iron Maiden, had a baby with thrash metal king, Metallica; local heavy metal band, Haunt, would be the by-product of that dream pairing. This band represents everything that made the 80s metal glory days such a profound time in the genre’s history. Comprised of Trevor William Church (vocals, guitar), John Tucker (backing vocals, guitar), Taylor Hollman (bass), Daniel (Wolfie) Wilson (drums), their musical influences are evident in their sound and image. The dueling rhythm and lead guitar power chords dynamic reminiscent of Judas Priest with the K.K. Downing and Glenn Tipton duo; the wailing solos from Thin Lizzy’s Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson. Finally, add a splash of the British invasion from metal royalty Angel Witch and Saxon, the result is a perfect mixture that’ll draw anybody in any age group wearing denim and leather as a fashion statement. Nostalgia can be considered a factor in their method of attracting interest, but it should by no means take away from their contemporary approach to making original music, but it does look good in specific capacities. Even their recent album covers are throwbacks to old John Romita Jr.’s Marvel Comics illustrations of the Bronze Age era with their space opera and mystical presentations. Haunt even sells their music on vinyl and cassettes at their booth. Audiences get to hear this music the way it’s meant to be heard, the old-school way. It’s more of an ode to a time past but not forgotten and a continuation of a tradition that defined metal as a unique genre. Haunt already has a good body of work on their resume. An EP “Luminous Eyes” (2017), the album “Burst Into Flame” (2018), and their next one “If Icarus Could Fly” is expected to be due out later this year. “Burst Into Flame” has garnered critical acclaim with a review and a spot on the Top 20 best metal albums of 2018 list in Rolling Stone magazine. Frontman, Trevor William Church, is similar to Wolverine in that he’s got metal running through his veins. His dad, Bill “The Electric” Church, played bass for Montrose with a then young Sammy Hagar. This band is Church’s passion project, and I got to talking with him about trying to break big from Fresno, how being featured in Rolling

Do you feel that being from Fresno, instead of a city like LA or San Francisco, that you have to do more to prove yourself? It wasn’t easy getting my foot in the door with Beastmaker but once we got signed and put out our first record things got moving. I prefer to be from a small city. I’m not caught up in any scene and my primary focus is producing music. Rolling Stone Magazine featured the band in a list of 20 Best Metal Albums of 2018. What’s your strategy during the recording process to make sure that your music stands out in the genre?

Stone magazine has impacted their career, and what their future plans are to put a haunting on the metal world. The band was featured twice in Rolling Stone Magazine in this past year. What has that done for your career? It definitely elevated our status. For a mainstream magazine to notice an underground metal band is always beneficial to the band.

One can say that your sound and image on your vinyl records and cassette tapes has a sense of nostalgia. Did you decide to go down that route because the old sound is different from what’s out there right now or because the old school is what you guys enjoy playing?

Rock has never died. It might be not in the lime light as much as it was in days’ past but it’s been paving its way back into people’s ears.

I really don’t know any different and these things are just very natural. Vinyl records in the heavy metal community has always been the go to choice. Cassettes have really made a comeback in the past few years and I want to make sure our fans have what they want in the physical format. I just write music that’s from the heart and however it is perceived is exactly what I want people to feel. The interpretation differs from person to person and to really lock into the actual meaning is something entirely different.

What made you guys want to play metal? How did the band start?

How would you describe the Fresno music scene?

I’ve always loved heavy metal and hard rock. The energy and feel is always something I’ve deeply loved. The band started as a solo project for me while Beastmaker was taking a break from touring. “Luminous Eyes” is just actually myself and drummer Daniel Wilson. It gained some momentum on the internet which led to the release of our full-length debut “Burst into Flame” and the formation of creating a live band.

The Fresno music scene is growing a bit. I’m really outside of the loop because I’m busy writing and recording in the studio. With Full Circle Olympic and Strummer’s though it seems like things are taking a positive turn. I hope that more bands see success and Fresno isn’t just a city on the way to LA.

You guys are coming in at a time where people are saying that rock is dead. What do you say to that?

Haunt is a DIY band. We record, mix, and master our own music. A lot of heart is put into the process. Maybe it’s the fire that drives me that makes us different. I really couldn’t say what makes us different or what makes us stand out. it’s 24/7 for me though and I’m always trying to push myself to work hard. If there’s a song that you believe represents the band in the best possible way which would it be and why? Currently, I really like playing “ Looking Glass” it’s about looking at your inner self and what others might think of you. But, you have to continue on being true to you and those who you love. Strength is another factor in this song and it tackles that topic as well. What does the future hold in store for Haunt? We just put out a new EP “Mosaic Vision”. Our sophomore record “If Icarus Could Fly” will be out in May. We are doing a couple festivals in April and we are embarking to Europe in September. You can expect a lot of music in the coming year because we are changing the format and won’t be putting out full lengths in the traditional manner anymore. Songs will be released bi-monthly and at the end of the year we will compile it all into a full length. We will have a lot of exclusive items available for this type of release...it’s all very exciting and we are using the internet and social media in a way that’ll be enjoyable for us and our fans.

STUDIO 54 MEETS FULTON 55 By Jennifer Crow

I

nternationally known and award-winning children’s illustrator and muralist, Rafael López, will work with the Arne Nixon Center for the Study of Children’s Literature, volunteers, and community members to design and create a community participation mural in Fresno. The mural will be constructed the week of May 6 - 11. López has created mural designs for cities across the United States, and beautiful examples can be found in San Diego, Chicago, Fort Collins, and more recently in Pittsburgh, CA. With the complete support of the building’s owner, Fresno’s community mural will be located at the corner of Cedar and Tulare across the street from Roosevelt High School. The desired outcome of this project is to bring diverse groups of people from the immediate neighborhood and broader communities together to create a beautiful work of public art. The hope is to also develop a sense of pride and accomplishment in the hearts of those who have worked together to undertake this achievable goal, knowing that they have played an integral part in creating an astounding mural that fosters collaboration and represents the breadth of our human spirit. The Nixon Center, a unit of the Special Collections Division in the Madden Library at Fresno State, promotes children’s literature through its collections, programming, exhibits, and conferences. It hopes this project will also serve as a bridge to literacy as it encourages related readings to neighboring elementary schools. Along with its sponsoring parties, the Center will hold a culminating dedica-

tion party with food, drink, music, and celebration! To raise funds for the Community Mural Project, the Center has partnered with a number of businesses and organizations to host a disco dance fundraiser. On Saturday, February 23rd, “Studio 54 Meets Fulton 55: Past Meets Present” will recreate the dazzling world of the disco era for one night only. Bridging our colorful and diverse communities for a night of dancing and entertainment in the hottest venue in the Cultural Arts District, the red velvet ropes are removed, and you are welcomed guests as Fulton 55 transforms into Studio 54. Be prepared to experience the glitter and chic glamour of the DISCO era. Bebe O’s Vintage Boutique in the Tower District, a founding partner, has generously offered to sell tickets for the disco event. T

he historic Tower District is known for culture, music, art, and its people. The ‘Tower’ is one of the few walking communities in the greater Fresno area and remains as the one-stop shop for those who support local business, restaurants, and drinking establishments. On any given day or weekend, one can expect to see Eva Scow, Richie Blue, Patrick Contreras, and many other amazing musicians performing at the various venues that call ‘Tower’ home. It is also home to Art Hop on the first Thursday of each month and supports local artists. Many of our neighbors look forward to the special events sponsored by the Tower District Marketing Committee (TDMC). One such event is the upcoming Mardi Gras Parade. This year’s 22nd annual parade is scheduled for March 3, 2019, starting at 1pm. It will travel down Olive Avenue from Palm to Maroa Avenue. The theme this year is Steampunk which is a subgenre of science fiction or science fantasy that incorporates technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19th century machinery. It’s an interesting theme which should bring out some creative floats. Also, on the horizon is the annual Rogue Festival which is scheduled for March 1 thru March 9, 2019. This is an event that showcases incredible talent at specific locations in the Tower District. This year will highlight musicians, singers, dancers, and comedy shows. It truly is a festival for everyone who loves to be entertained. We suggest people come out before or after a show and enjoy a great meal at one of our locally owned restaurants. Another event to look forward to is the Taste and Toast of the Tower scheduled for May 9, 2019. The TDMC will host what is known as a ‘Wine Walk’ in the Tower District. We anticipate approximately a dozen wineries that will pour samples of their premium wines. Also, restaurants will provide food samples that will showcase their menus. A ticket will allow you to sample all the wines from the participating wineries and food samples. Simply said, the Tower District is a fun place to hang out. We’re home to pub crawls, performing arts at the Tower Theatre, antiques, and vintage clothing stores, and much more. Visit us at TowerDistrict.org for ongoing events. Aerial Arts Fresno Presents: Melt the Soul M

S

elt the Soul… sounds dreamy right? Maybe you saw the title and thought, “I like the sound of a show called ‘Melt the Soul’, but I don’t know what aerial is…” Well friend, we are here to tell you. And then show you. When you eventually come to our show, because it is definitely dreamy ethereal magic, and you won’t want to miss it. We’ve been called air gypsies, curtain dancers, fabric flyers, and we are indeed, all of the above. Think Cirque Du Soleil, except we’re local and affordable and you can buy us a beer after! So to sum up, we’re dancers, but like, in the sky. You get it. Melt the Soul will be Aerial Arts Fresno’s debut Rogue show. This showing features collaborative choreography by Brittany Kitchen, Meaghan McCready, Kelly Replogle, and Katie Belden. The unspoken narrative combines aerial dance with some moody hipster music to create a majestic, glorious, gooey hour-long performance. Most of us were 90’s babies, who grew up to be early 00’s emo kids, so we’ve got that fluid emotional vibe that makes for a great artistic performance. Melt the Soul is an abstract exploration of relationships, conflict, and growth. It seems that now, more than ever, people feel isolated and overwhelmed by the world around them, trying to navigate their lives successfully and cultivate healthy rela-

SEXOLOGY: THE MUSICAL!

olo-performer, musician, and storyteller Mel Moseley brings her most recent solo performance piece, SEXOLOGY: THE MUSICAL!, to the Rogue Festival. A funny and poignant musical journey from monogamy to solo-polyamory SEXOLOGY: THE MUSICAL! explores the ins-and-outs of monogamy, ethical non-monogamy, and polyamory through personal storytelling and music. If you’ve ever wondered how alternative relationships work, this is the show for you! From monogamy to swinging to polyamory to relationship anarchy, Mel has been there. Join Mel on her journey as she questions - what if we all did what works best for us and weren’t afraid to be honest about it? The world might be a safer and more loving place. Mel says: “When I was young, I thought you were supposed to find your one true love and ride off into the sunset together - I didn’t know there was any other option. Before I even knew the term monogamy, that idea was burned into my brain. Growing up in suburbia in the 70s and 80s, it was all about getting your man. At the same time, all of my fantasies as a teen were about women. Then I discovered there’s a huge world out there of possible relationship structures. Men, women, dyads, triads, and more. In fact, you can create your own structure and do it ethically and transparently! And so, off I went exploring.” Praised by critics and audiences for its performances at the 2018 Come Inside Festival and Sex Positive Portland in Portland, OR, SEXOLOGY: THE MUSICAL! launches its 2019 spring/ summer tour with the Rogue Festival.

tionships. This was the thought process when we all choreographed for this show. You’ll see different perspectives of relationships and life changes for each piece, tied together through fluid movement, and explored on a variety of different aerial apparatuses. Who needs a story-telling plot anyway? So contrived. Although Aerial Arts Fresno was only founded a year ago, we’ve been hard at work creating new art, collaborating with artists of different disciplines, and performing for events and parties throughout the Central Valley. We started off with a bang in January 2018 (in our first few weeks as a company!) when we collaborated with local band, and American heroes, The Morning Drive for their album release party at Fulton 55. In May 2018, we excitedly performed alongside several local and some renowned musicians during Grizzly Fest next to one of their main stages. Most recently (October 2018) we teamed up with Aerial Angels Pole Fitness and D&J Dance Company for a full-length show you

he 2nd Street Dancers are back at Rogue with a high energy show celebrating female artists: Dancing with Powerful Voices. They will perform twice at Dianna’s Studio of Dance at 826 N Fulton St. Performances will be on Saturday March 2nd at 8:00 pm and Sunday March 3rd at 3:30 pm. Tickets are $10 and can be bought at the door or at the Rogue Festival’s website: www.roguefestival.com. When The 2nd Street Dancers’ director, Beth Zobian, traveled through Spain last summer, she visited many Spanish museums and admired works by Picasso, Dali, and Goya. But one small thought nagged at her during her trip: where were all the female artists? This niggling question persisted once she returned home to Fresno. And then, as though in answer to her thoughts, she heard it: NPR had published a list of the 200 Greatest Songs by 21st Century Women. Inspired

by this list, and by the idea of illuminating these women’s voices through dance, Zobian recruited 2nd Street Jazz, the teen and adult dancers in her company, to help her showcase these female artists at the 2019 Rogue Festival. Dancing with Powerful Voices is a celebration of women, dance, and music. This show will take you on a journey through the great female pop and folk music of the 2000s, interpreted as never before- through the 2nd Street Dancers’ energetic jazz, tap, and ballet numbers. This is a show that encourages the audience to leave their worries at the door and prepare to be entertained; even those who aren’t dance connoisseurs will enjoy the music- some big hits and some music from lesser known artists- and listen to what these strong women have to say. The Second Street Dancers are a dance company based out of Selma, Califor-

The Second Street Dancers’ international performances include dancing in China (2001), the Mediterranean (2003), in Cancun (2005), in Italy (2007), and most recently in Cuba (2017).
