EDITOR’S NOTE Political debates are unavoidable these days. It permeates our social media, work, and even family gatherings. In fact, it takes more effort to avoid them than it does to actively seek them for participation. Because of climate change, mass shootings, and tensions surrounding the issues at the border, we’re continually finding ourselves in an in-depth discussion on politics. And unless we’ve done some homework to educate ourselves adequately, the majority of us turn to quickly grasp onto what we’ve seen in the news – or on commentary shows that interprets that news – to support our claims, or rather, opinions on the matter. The biggest problem isn’t so much where we disagree, but how we disagree. Too often, people use heavily biased “news” sites or channels to justify their arguments. Sources that are littered with opinion or speculation. Just because it’s on the internet, it doesn’t mean it’s true. Say it with me, just because it’s on the internet it doesn’t mean it’s true. Media surround our waking life, it’s unavoidable. Every media source, whether founded in advertising, entertainment, or politics has an objective – a message that caters to their preferred demographic (i.e., age group, gender, economic class, etc.) with a prescribed goal. As participants in media, we have to filter all of their messages through a critical lens. More simply, don’t take everything you see in

the media at face value. But the average person consistently gets lost in the weeds of separating what is fact (news) and what is an opinion. There are some organizations out there who have made it their mission to identify bias in the news. Ad Fontes Media keeps an updated ‘Media Bias Chart’ available on their website at AdFontesMedia.com. The chart categorizes news sources by their level of fact reporting, how ‘left’ or ‘right’ their bias is, and also by how fair or unfair their interpretations are. The current chart lists AP and AFP sharing the very top as “Original Fact Reporting” and dead center with “minimal or balanced bias.” Directly under AP, with the same categorization, is Reuters, Bloomberg, and C-SPAN. And just to help complete the picture, InfoWars sits in the lowest bowels of the chart as “Most Extreme Right” and “Contains Inaccurate/Fabricated Info.” The chart is a great place to start if you’re not sure what to look for in determining the quality of a source, and you might be surprised at what you’ll find. Quality sources are important because they help us get closer to the truth. We not only use them to bridge the gap in understanding with those we debate, but to bridge the gap of understanding for ourselves as well. If we have any hope at finding our way out and with a solution, it’ll be on the middle ground where that truth has brought us together.

T

o most people who aren’t from around here, the towns of Hanford and Lemoore probably don’t spring to mind when thinking about great places to eat. Honestly, that’s probably true for a lot of people who are from around here, too. Fast food joints crowd the main streets, and they’re cheap, convenient, and – let’s face it – a safe bet. No surprises, no disappointments, you know what you’re getting because they’re the same everywhere you go. Sure, you’d probably love to have a big, juicy burger, some delicious, authentic tacos, a cheesy, hand-tossed pizza, or maybe even some fresh sushi, but dare you to take a chance at an unfamiliar local spot? Well, YES YOU DARE! Because I – with the help

like jalapeno poppers, onion rings, and chilicheese fries. And of course, they also have ice cream and milkshakes in a variety of flavors. But, at the end of the day, it’s all about those burgers!

BEST BURGER

Fatte Albert’s - Hanford

Burger Shack – Lemoore 718 N. Lemoore Ave | (559) 997-1114 Owners Nasser and Jimmy first opened Burger Shack in September of 2017, and in the just under two years since, they have become the favorite spot to grab a delicious burger. It’s easy to see why, too. The restaurant is clean, the prices are very reasonable, the service is super-friendly, and the burgers... oh man, the burgers! The most popular item on their menu is the pastrami burger, and one bite is all it takes to see why. A thick, juicy, perfectly-seasoned burger patty, dripping with melted cheese, topped with a generous stack of pastrami, hot off the flat top with those yummy crispy bits, loaded with the works, on a fresh, toasted bun. For only $8.49 you can make it a combo with crinkle-cut fries (scientifically proven to be the tastiest of all the fries) and a drink. Like most restaurants of its type, Burger Shack has an extensive menu with a large variety. It’s everything from chicken strips, fried shrimp, to salads and all the great sides you’d expect, | FRESNOFLYER.COM |

BEST PIZZA 110 E. 7th St. | (559) 585-0220 For 13 years, Fatte Albert’s has been the best place in town to grab a pie for all the right reasons. For starters, their pizzas are incredible. Loaded with cheese and toppings with a crispy, chewy crust that was made for dipping, it’s everything you would expect from an excellent pizzeria. But then they take things to the next level with original creations like the Chile Verde pizza, a local favorite that to truly appreciate, you have to try it for yourself. Their incredible Fatte Rolls, which are crispy, spicy, insanely good, pair perfectly with any of the delicious beers they have on tap. Many of these unique menu items started off as one of their monthly features and were so popular that they became permanent additions to the menu. Fatte Albert’s is all about giving their customers what they want, and some signature pizzas and sides are named in honor of the those who inspired them. One particularly special example is The Frazier, a combination pizza that was renamed for the customer who ordered it every time he came in after he passed away. That close connection

with the community is what truly sets Fatte Albert’s apart. They regularly host fundraisers for youth sports and various other local organizations, giving back to a city that has given them years of loyal support. All this, and they even host live music 4-5 times a year too, just to keep things interesting. Because it’s not enough just to make the best tasting pizzas in town, you gotta have fun while you do it!

BEST MEXICAN FOOD Valle Grullense – Hanford 901 W. Lacey Blvd | (559) 772-8045 “Oooh I love me some Valle Grullense!” writes food fan Julie Atkinson in response to my Facebook survey. She was not alone in this sentiment. Valle Grullense was the top choice for great Mexican food. One look at their all-homemade menu, and it’s easy to see why. It’s loaded with a vast assortment of breakfast, lunch, and dinner items, each one more delicious-looking than the last. Their Yelp reviews are also glowing, with kudos to everything from their chips and salsa to their chile Verde, wet burritos, and tacos. They also have a full bar and the essential menudo on Saturday’s and Sunday’s. Because, seriously, can you even trust a Mexican restaurant that doesn’t have menudo on Saturday’s and Sunday’s?

BEST ASIAN FOOD Poke Bowl-Rrito - Hanford 150 N. 12th Ave #105 | (559)587-5525

Zeny’s Filipino Restaurant - Lemoore 352 W. D St., Lemoore | (559) 924-4973 It may be a little controversial to have an Asian food category without the top pick going to a Chinese restaurant. But I gotta be honest, there’s not really any Chinese restaurants around here that stand out as anything more than just “ok.” I’ve had some incredible Chinese food before, but the places around here are like a hundred other “good-but-notgreat” spots you’d find in any city. You can throw a dart at a list of Chinese restaurants here, and the quality of the chow mien, broccoli beef, and General Tso’s Chicken wouldn’t vary. So, why not try something new, exciting, and possibly even healthy? Poke Bowl-Rrito has that last category covered for sure, complete with offering a discount for gym members. For people who aren’t familiar with poke (pronounced po-kay), think sushi, only in a bowl, on top of warm rice, with avocado, scallions, onions, edamame, or even chunks of watermelon, and finished off with a variety of umami-rich sauces. It’s a Hawaiian staple, found everywhere from roadside stands to gas stations, and it’s currently the hottest new trend in Asian cuisine. After taking over space previously belonging to Chop Chop Poke in April of this year, Poke Bowl-Rrito has been steadily growing a loyal customer base by offering fresh ingredients, locally-sourced produce, and house-made sauces. “Everything we use is completely made in-house,” general manager Melissa Anaya told me. “Nothing comes from a bottle or a can.” They also offer cooked items, like chicken, crab, shrimp, and seared Ahi tuna for people who may be squeamish about eating raw fish. They also have vegan and keto-friendly menu options as well. What really makes Poke Bowl-Rrito unique is in the second half of their name, the “Rrito.” All of their poke options are available in a traditional, tomato and basil, or spinach wrap. If you’ve never tried poke, this is a great place to go and see what it’s all about. The restaurant is immaculate, and the service is friendly and very helpful for poke

newbies. Zeny’s is a place that is not only popular with the large Filipino population in the Lemoore area, but with everyone else who appreciates delicious Filipino food. Their menu offers popular selections, such as chicken adobo, orange chicken, and pancit (a personal favorite). But, the star of the show and the reason why people come from all over is their lumpia. If you’ve never had lumpia... well, slap yourself in the face as hard as you can, because what’s wrong with you? No, but seriously, lumpia is terrific. It’s sort of like the Filipino version of an egg roll, but smaller, flakier, and so addictive they should come with a surgeon generals warning. Zeny’s sells them for $8.59/doz, and you’ll probably want to get at least 2 dozen - one to later and the other to eat on your way home. That smell will drive you insane! Great, now I want lumpia, and they don’t open for about 14 more hours...

BEST “OTHER” Kabab City – Hanford 129 W. 7th St. | (559)530-3085 Formerly Zaytoona, Kabab City is a fantastic Mediterranean restaurant located in historic downtown Hanford. The staff is amiable and helpful for first-timers, and the food is out of this world! The spicy hummus is an absolute must-try. So garlicky, lemony, mild-

ly spicy and addictively tasty, I could literally dip an old shoe in this stuff and eat it. Their shawarma is also fantastic. The menu describes it as “marinated tri-tip cooked to perfection,” and all I can add to that is I wish there were even more of that mouth-watering meat. I just want to stitch together a cape of that tri-tip and wear it like the Superman of Flavortown. I ordered mine with a side of french fries because I wanted to dip them in the rest of the spicy hummus. I’m not sure if I unlocked some peak white-people achievement for dipping fries into hummus, but I definitely felt like I had won something. Sorry, not sorry! They also have fattoush salad, gyros, baba ghanoush, incredible looking chicken kabab, and everything else you would expect from a great Mediterranean restaurant. Not only is their food absolutely delicious, but their prices are very reasonable! And they have vegetarian options as well. It’s an excellent spot for a work lunch, a bite with friends, to take a date, or even bring the whole family for a party. Personally, I can’t wait to go back. I’m looking forward to working my way through their menu! And there you have it, 5 great places to eat if you ever find yourself down in the Lemoore/Hanford area. And these are just a few of the great, independent and family-owned restaurants we have around here. There are many more wonderful local gems here, all you gotta do is come on down and see for yourself!

OPINION

A BAD VEGETABLE PART II

By I. smiley G. Calderón | smileygcalderon@gmail.com

I

n last month’s edition, we took a more indepth look at the shocking summer Facebook threats of violence perpetrated by the reckless anonymous poster, “MAGAShooter,” against Tower District’s LGBTQ nightclub, FAB Fresno. Thankfully, the unhinged man behind these horrific threats was tracked down by authorities and taken into custody before he could realize any atrocity. Surprisingly, however, this dangerous perpetrator has a very hilariously unique surname for being such an apparent trigger-happy type of tough guy: Lettuce (yes, this is it translated the original Spanish version is: “Lechuga”). This ‘Mr. Lettuce-Head’ situation made me think of how deceptively innocent a person may seem. But who, in all actuality, may be a vile, antisocial psychopath patiently lying in wait. I realized that, sometimes, even the safest things in the world - like vegetables - can be harmful and make people sick - or even kill. Thankfully, in Mr. Lechuga’s case, no violence occurred as authorities thwarted any possible attack plan and squashed his mortal threat. Indeed, this horrible story has a happy ending, and Fresno PD should be proud of its efficient and quick response. They stopped what could have been another senseless massacre that we all have seemed to have grown so desensitized to nowadays. But, what about the sentiment and animus behind the posts - did Mr. Lechuga infect or activate other Fresnans with his crazy audacity in threatening the massacre of a group of bystanders that incite personal anger? Did he resonate with those who “only” dislike queer individuals when he took his stand as a conservative crusader? Just what did Mr. Lettuce-Head think when he masked his violent threats behind a “MAGAShooter” screen name? How exactly would slaughter-

ing a club full of happy gays “Make America Great Again?” I am concerned about this dangerous animus that justifies violence and “punishment” from cisgender straight men against queer people in our society. Let me explain. When I speak with religious, semireligious or even quasi-religious cisgender straight people about LGBTQ folks, a lot of them shake their heads in disapproval or disgust. And the reason is not that they’re Conservative or Liberal, but because their cemented Western religious dogma has convinced them that gay and queer individuals are disobedient and lustful sinners who deserve punishment. And you could say they’re right, too - I mean, after all, it is what their Bible teaches, it’s what God says. In both the Old and New Testaments - there is a clearly written draconian disdain for LGBTQ people in the form of a “holy law from God.” Let’s be clear, there’s a whole list of things that the Bible also says ‘not to do.’ And it shares the same hefty consequence lavished upon LGBTQ people: death. For example, sex before marriage, called fornication, is punishable by death. Adultery falls in this category, too. But so do disobedient children - but we would never condone executing our unruly teenagers. (although some parents might disagree). And, as a society, we would never execute anyone for having sex before marriage or sex outside of marriage. If that were the case, we would have hundreds if not thousands of public executions everyday. Yet, for some reason, fundamentalists want to hold LGBTQ people to their fundamentalist fire when it comes to their sexuality, something that should be a private matter, anyway. In the Bible, queer people are put to death and slammed deep

into the closet for their homosexuality with the warning that they will also suffer eternal death for their iniquity. If this is the treatment given by today’s people of faith to a fringe and vulnerable group within society, I’d hate to think what unreligious, faithless folks do! (Hint: unsurprisingly, without the divine and cosmic religious laws present to tell us how to discriminate, the treatment is better - acceptance and equality!) These Biblical laws and edicts clearly only tell me one thing: it must have been cisgender straight men who politically authored these parts of the Bible. Fragile and insecure men of power who felt threatened by the queer population of their day. This enmity between the cisgender straight man and the LGBTQ community has a long one-sided history that has been unfair and unjust. I’m sorry, regardless of how “inspired” the Bible may be to you - the fact is, men still wrote the Bible - and men are not infallible! So, why should we legitimize and perpetuate old and misguided religious hate rhetoric and policy in today’s multicultural and religiously free, omnist society? Homosexuality is clearly the diametrically opposed enemy of the Biblical God, for some reason. It’s the one act that is deemed a perversion so worthy of mortal and eternal death that it is called an abomination! Conveniently, people who oppose queer people and their rights always seem to point back to God for “holy” justification. “It’s God’s law,” they confess. (However, I do always love to point out that Jesus of Nazareth never mentioned homosexuality - not once but he did say something about “loving your neighbor as yourself ” - so what does that tell you?) And so, with this belief in the back of

| FEATURED | DINING | CALENDAR | MUSIC | CLASSIFIEDS |

| FRESNOFLYER.COM |

their head, when harm befalls a queer person through catastrophe or disease, the unspoken thought might be, “well, they got what they deserved…” - All because of this one piece of their identity. This type of thinking can’t be right. And, don’t be deceived: it is not innocuous or innocent to let these feelings percolate. Instead, this vantage is dangerous and pernicious; it creates a view of people as the inanimate objectified “other.” A picture of something less than human or less deserving of respect and rights. This thinking can quickly spiral out of control and spread like a disease. Will there be other “bad vegetables” in Fresno who may threaten to unleash carnage against the LGBTQ community and feel somewhat justified in doing so because of the “wrath of God” against them? Mr. Lechuga’s credible threats came precisely at the 3rd anniversary of the infamous 2016 slaughter of patrons at Pulse, Orlando, Florida’s LGBTQ nightclub. And when he mentioned this unthinkable atrocity, he didn’t care about the 49 people who perished in it. In fact, Mr. Lechuga approved of the massacre and wanted to bring its callous brand of heinous terror to the patrons at FAB Fresno. Hopefully, Mr. Lettuce-Head’s arrest will deter future possible violent actors from surfacing and spewing their violent, crazy threats. There is no place for these kinds of reckless threats of violence in our multicultural, multireligious, and diverse society. Instead, as “good vegetables” in bad times, what we need to do is protect our most vulnerable members in the community. And we do this by validating and accepting every person and group with human dignity.

College to Table:

GIBSON FARM MARKET By Will Freeney | memo247365@gmail.com

S

urely you have heard of the “new” concept of farm-to-table. Restaurants now offer meals comprising fresh, locally grown ingredients throughout their menu. Farm-to-table is a wonderful approach to providing fresh, local food in the restaurants of the vicinity. But as a business model, it is much easier to implement here in the Central Valley, where over 75 percent of the nation’s table crops are grown. Here in Fresno, we can make that natural flow occur directly to our dining room table as well, courtesy of Gibson Farm Market. It is a subsidiary enterprise of the College of Agriculture at Fresno State University. All of the employees of the market are Fresno State students, with the exception of the store manager, Jeremy Lewis, who is a Fresno native. All of the proceeds beyond those that sustain the operation go back to the College of Agriculture. So, besides acquiring the most authentically fresh, local food available in Fresno, you are supporting education with every purchase at the Gibson Farm Market. Virtually all of the inventory is grown or raised by the students of the College of Agriculture – from sirloin steak to salad ingredients, from locally bottled wines to the creamiest of ice creams. You may not find everything you can at your local supermarket, but you can’t find anything that wasn’t made locally. Of course, corn is one of their most famous and prolific products, with an opening day rush for corn sales season that rivals opening day for the fishing season in Minnesota. If you haven’t made your corn purchase

yet, you have until sometime around Labor Day to do so. Ears are stocked in the center of the store in their four-square-yard transportation bins, and those bins empty fast. Ears are flying out the door. The few exceptions to the locally grown inventory include the numerous Bulldog-themed souvenirs available – from coffee cups to t-shirts. Even the coffee, which can’t be grown in our climate and terrain, is roasted, and packaged (whole bean and ground) by Fabiano’s Coffee of Fresno. Fabiano’s Coffee works in partnership with the market, providing not only coffee but training for Fresno State students in the business of coffee wholesale and retail. All the various blends

carry FSU-based names: President’s Blend, Victor E. Blend, Time Out Roast, Bulldog Blend. The history Gibson Farm Market reveals the extent which it is a part of the community as much as a part of the College of Agriculture. It started as a wood shack produce stand – like so many in the Central Valley – back in the 1980s. Eventually, that stand morphed into a permanent building at the corner of Barstow and Chestnut – at the center of the Jordan College of Agriculture’s portion of the campus. Then along came Rue and Gwen Gibson, Fresnans whose bequeathal to the Fresno State College of Agriculture made possible the current commodious store – just south of its predecessor and just north of the Campus Pointe shopping center. “Commodious” means, in this case, 4,800 square feet with 2,500 square feet of retail space – almost doubling the size of the old facility. It was actually Rue and Gwen’s daughter, Joyce Gibson, who made the 1.5 million dollar donation to the university for the construction (and renaming) of the farm market. The contribution was in commemoration of her parents, who brought the family to the farmland of the Central Valley and deeply loved their new home. The result of that donation and subsequent construction has prospered, what with the abundant commerce, they do with local customers. As Joyce’s sister, Beverly Knobloch, said at the grand opening of Gibson Farm Market in 2008, “I think that the community has

| FEATURED | DINING | CALENDAR | MUSIC | CLASSIFIEDS |

had a love affair with this farm market for quite a few years … now, with the opening of the new market, I think we can say it’s a marriage between the community and the university.” The quality and diversity of their offerings cannot be over-emphasized. They currently offer three varieties of grapes (green Thompson, large purple Autumn Royal, and deep red Flame – all seedless), giant beefsteak tomatoes, and the afore-mentioned corn. The meat section includes a full array of sausage, chorizo, bacon, and baby back ribs (in addition to the afore-mention sirloin tri-tip). The varieties of sausage outstrip any supermarket butcher – and are all locally produced. Choose from all-beef summer sausage, fresh lamb sausage (with garlic and onion), mild Sicilian sausage, Polish sausage, Smoked German sausage, fiesta cheddar sausage, pepper jack sausage, ragin’ Cajun sausage, Old World linguica, and “chorizo style” salami. If that’s not enough options, you’ll just have to make your own. The wine section may not be quite that extensive, but it is impressive. In addition to table red and table white in the Tailgate wine line, they offer an award-winning 14-year aged Sherry and Uva Doce Port. There are several exotic varietals (Pinot Gris, Albarino, Alicante Bouchet, Malbec) as well as stalwarts like Cabernet Sauvignon and California Syrah. If you’re not sure which of these fine selections should be your selection, the Gibson Farm Market also has a tasting nook. Don’t overlook the many condiments that offer palate treats and perfect pairings while you’re in the wine corner: peach chardonnay spread, strawberry rose spread, blackberry cabernet spread, and caramelized onion spread. The dairy case is loaded with ice cream in pints and 1.5-quart containers – as well as an ice cream counter in the corner. There’s no better treat on a hot Fresno summer day than a cone from the Gibson Farm Market. While you’re doing dairy, pick up a carton of whipped butter available and a gallon or two of milk. All from Fresno State cows, milked by Fresno State students. Open seven days a week and present on Facebook and Twitter, Gibson Farm Market is an excellent place to check in regularly for the current fresh groceries. Check them out, check-in, and check out with bags full of Fresno’s best to eat and drink. | FRESNO FLYER |

VISITING CAMINOS

the Arte Américas Project and Exhibition in Downtown Fresno

PART II By I. smiley G. Calderón | smileygcalderon@gmail.com

Come on over, but just don’t live here,” chided Dr. Alex Saragoza, professor of history at the University of California, Berkeley, and curator of the Caminos, Latino History of the Central Valley exhibit at Arte Américas, Casa de la Cultura, in downtown Fresno. We had been talking about the unique history of the Mexican migrant worker in the United States when he summed up our discussion with this blunt yet powerful message. It made me stop and think. The history of our American nation is full of immigrants who helped build this country from scratch. Some were invited to stay while others were really only invited to work and then leave, but who stayed anyway. Yet, for the Latino in America - especially the Mexican worker - this type of invitation was like the undulating movement of an accordion, back and forth, open and closed, for hundreds of years. In last month’s Fresno Flyer edition, we took a look at the early migration of Mexicans here in the Central Valley beginning with the first “camino” (the Spanish word for ‘road’) in 1772 to the third camino period of “Gold and Gringos,” culminating in 1900. Now, we are going to highlight the other four main caminos of the exhibit as well as take a look at the eighth final camino: today’s era. The good news is that you still have time to see this incredible exhibit for yourself for free throughout August. A lot of working immigrants have traveled to the United States in search of economic opportunity - Chinese, Japanese, Italians, Irish, Germans, among others - who more or less came to America in a single wave to meet labor demands. Certainly, there were racial problems when they arrived. For example, here in Fresno, Armenian immigrants were prohibited from living in specific neighborhoods and suffered because of racially restrictive covenants. But, for Latinos - especially Mexicans - the treatment was especially harsh with multiple waves of invitation and forcible expulsion coupled with endemic racism and classism that are still in action even today. Yet, with each wave of migrant Mexicans coming to the U.S., the foundation for future waves of Mexicans was established. Soon, the migrants would begin to come from multiple, diverse Mexican states further south instead of from just the ones near the northern Mexican/U.S. border. At the turn of the 20th Century, Mexicans traveled “Al Norte” (to the North) to work in the agriculture sector (“the fields”) and lumber mills as well as on the ever-growing railroad. During World War I, the Unit-

ed States invited working Mexicans with the Bracero Program. But after the war ended, the U.S. proceeded to deport them with the newly formed Border Patrol in the 20s and 30s. (what a crazy coincidence that “BP” was for both the inviting and expelling governmental entities that dealt with Mexicans). Once more, during World War II, when domestic labor workers were in shortage due to the war effort, cheap labor was in high demand, and again, Mexicans were welcomed to the fields through the Bracero Program. This continued until, of course, the war was over and cheap labor levels stabilized with the return of U.S. servicemen. Then came Operation Wetback in the 50s to round up all of the unwanted Mexicans and send them back home. Their “home” was never meant to be here. And that leads us to the exhibit’s fifth camino, which Arte Américas refers to as the “Seeds of Change” period - a time where immigrant Mexicans began to spread their roots deeper into American culture. Here we have the rise of the Mexican-American, the future business owner, and entrepreneur, a new kind of immigrant citizen, no longer tied down to the cruelty of the fields. But there were strong forces in opposition. Local ranchers had become potent political forces, and in 1964 the Bracero program officially ended. There was an anti-immigrant sentiment. Once again, it was time for that cruel accordion to close itself upon the migrant Mexican, as we had seen done multiple times before. Still, the tide of change was on the migrant Mexican’s and Mexican-American’s side. Workers united to fight for equality and justice, for fair wages and humane working conditions in the agriculture sector. Heroes like César Chávez and Dolores Huerta emerged organizing migrant Mexican and Mexican-American communities for political change and socio-economic | FRESNOFLYER.COM |

equality. In 1965, the infamous grape strikes ensued, lasting five years. Social change was coming - both in the city and in the fields. El Chicano, the socially radicalized Mexican-American, arose during this next camino, called “El Movimiento,” (the Movement) in the 60s and 70s. Here, the children of migrant Mexicans firmly rooted themselves in their new American culture. The focus was now on education and inspiring art and culture. There was a purpose, a hope, but it was a difficult time. The Vietnam war was raging, and there was a military draft in place that pulled young Chicanos from their families to fight oversees. Many never returned home. But their memory lived on as the fight for equal civil rights continued to wage at the domestic front. Migrant Mexicans, Mexican-Americans and Chicanos alike united together for La Causa (the Cause) to improve workers’ rights and socio-economic justice. The seventh and eighth caminos are the evolution of the grueling groundwork put in by the visionary ancestors of today’s Mexican-Americans and Chicanos. Arte Américas calls these roads “Progress and Backlash” and “Más Caminos,” respectively. With the population of Latinos and the more general group of Spanish speakers (called Hispanics) increasingly and rapidly growing in the U.S., more significant opportunity for business and politics emerged, but with it came political backlash. Latinos needed to reorganize and stand in unison for collective progress. And today, with the Latino population now exceeding 54% in the Central Valley, the question that remains is, what challenges and opportunities face Latinos in our era? And an obvious answer to this question is representation, visibility, and acknowledgment. For example, how is it possible that as recent as 2017 - less than two years

ago - the display of local history presented at the Fresno Fairgrounds about the Central Valley did not represent any of the 247-year old Latino histories from which it comprises? How absurd! The history of the Central Valley is entirely incomplete without acknowledging the millions of Latinos who have labored here in blood, sweat, and tears to make this place what it is today. How embarrassingly ignorant - or maliciously disrespectful - it is to conveniently forget about and thereby erase an entire group of workers so crucial to our history by not even acknowledging them or their vital contributions! Unbelievable! But, thankfully, in response, Arte Américas diligently worked hard to research and present the incredible true story of Caminos, Latino History of the Central Valley to set the history straight. This exhibit is truly amazing, but its story is even more amazing. It has inspired a book in progress by Dr. Saragoza, which will share this incredible history presented at the exhibit. Nancy Márquez, Project Manager for Arte Américas who I interviewed for the first part of this story published in last month’s Fresno Flyer edition, likes to gently challenge visitors: “If Latino is not part of your past or history, can it be a part of your future…?” I think the answer to that question is a resounding yes! And, anyway, with the Latino population increasing at the rate that it currently is, through migration and births, a Latino is bound to cross your path and road soon, whether you like it or not. Today’s Mexican-Americans and Chicanos cannot just be rounded up and deported as they were in the past, you see. The accordion can’t close on them anymore. They are here to stay now and have paved the way for others to come and do the same. The tide of positive change is on their side. In last month’s Caminos article, I asked, which camino era do you think is Nancy’s favorite? Hopefully, you’ve guessed right! You should go visit the exhibit and ask her for yourself, but here’s a hint: Nancy is a champion for education and social justice who doesn’t mind ruffling anyone’s feathers if it’s for a good cause. She has been a crucial backbone for Arte Américas since it opened some 30 years ago and she’s still a part of El Movimiento. As Nancy might ask, which camino(s) resonate with you and how are they intertwined with the road you are on? Let us know! You can find more information about the exhibit here: www.arteamericas.org. | FRESNO FLYER |
