EDITOR’S NOTE It’s the end of another year and the start of a new decade. We’ll soon have to be more specific about which 20s we’re talking about – ‘no, no, no, I mean the nineteen twenties.’ It feels weird to think about. But there’s also something exciting about it at the same time. When a year ends and a new one is on the horizon, we get a whiff of a new beginning – like a reset button is somewhere within reach, and we can start fresh. But a new decade, that’s something different altogether. Ten years is a long time, and for me, that amount of time feels just about right for a real transformation, one that I can enact myself – or at least as much as life will let me. Looking back, I can get a sense of who I thought I was but with the clear wisdom to see who I really was. I can reflect on what I thought was important, who I worked so hard to keep in my life, and what big goals I was dreaming would become a reality. In that sort of reflection, I can also see how much of it changed – the dreams that came true and the ones that didn’t. I can watch, almost in real-time, how my values evolved, and all those things that I used to put so much stock in aren’t nearly as important to me anymore. And, probably the biggest takeaway was how all the little ‘left turns’ and surprising twists – the things that at the time were severe, if not sometimes devastating, inconveniences -

eventually worked out for the better. When I add it all up to where I am today, I can see where patience was a virtue, how unyielding persistence was a benefit, and how flexibility was vital. I think about that, and then I think about how the next ten years might go. Whatever picture we paint for ourselves today of what we want in the future, will inevitably change in some way. However, it doesn’t mean that we don’t hold some sort of goal and strive to improve our lives in a way we find meaningful. Rolling with the punches is a fantastic skill set to develop, and it can also lead to new opportunities if you let it. And if you’re not where you think you should be at this time in your life, remember to look back at all the hard work and transformations you’ve been through – because there’s no way you’ve made it this far without it. Looking at the next ten years means giving yourself a more reasonable time to hit your growth markers with better chances for success without feeling like a failure because you didn’t accomplish it in twelve months. Go after all the things, dream larger than life, but also give yourself room to fall off track a bit with an openness to find the silver lining. Here’s to the twenties being a roarin’ good time.

community staple has ensured its future with the onboarding of two new owners earlier this fall. Haven’s For Total Security, Inc. welcomed Andy Peltier and Chris Shafer as the next generation to lead the 43-year old business forward. Established in 1976, Haven’s got its foothold in the market as a kiosk in Southeast Fresno and soon established itself as one of few businesses in the area offering full-service locksmithing, varieties of safes, and alarms. Peltier and Shafer aim to maintain this current suite of services while also breaking into a new arena of the security industry and its growing technologies – access control i.e., identification cards using radiofrequency to grant access through doorways and into buildings, and security camera systems. Hailing from the east coast, Peltier found his way to Fresno by means of his wife (a Fresno native) whom he met in Rhode Island. No stranger to entrepreneurship – having owned

a restaurant equipment repair prior – Peltier saw a great opportunity when he spotted Haven’s listed for sale. With the help of Shafer, who likewise touts business experience in the area of growth and management – the two set out on this new-to-them enterprise. In the few short months Peltier and Shafer have taken over, Haven’s has already seen growth. “We have a full-time dispatcher answering the phone and managing the schedule. We have a new, ten-thousand-dollar key cutting machine to handle almost any key, and I have also ordered thirty-five Hollon safes [making us] the largest safe showroom in the Central Valley,” Peltier shares. Improving specific processes for a more efficient workflow has been a likewise focus. The road techs have been outfitted with a comprehensive stock of supplies and the necessary training to instill the skillsets required to handle any of the offered services Haven’s provides.

he holidays are traditionally a time for celebration, reflection, spending time with loved ones, and making memories to last a lifetime. For many, however, the joy and good cheer of the holidays are replaced with feelings of loneliness, hopelessness, despair, and grief. And for those who suffer from depression, the “holiday blues” can have tragic consequences. There are many reasons why the holidays can be a depressing time for people. One of the most common being social isolation. As we get older, our social circle tends to get smaller and smaller. Friends move away or start families, relationships end, previously close connections grow apart, and making new friends seems to get more complicated and cause us more anxiety the older we get. For introverted people, seeking out new friendships is near unthinkable. This leaves many with no one to spend the holidays with. Grief over the loss of a loved one often causes seasonal depression. Some people share fond memories of those who have passed and reminisce about the good times

during the holidays. Still, for many others, it only amplifies the pain of loss and feelings of emptiness caused by their absence. Financial struggles can also cast a dark shadow over the holiday season. Being unable to buy the gifts, take the trips, throw the parties, or prepare the feasts that it seems everyone else around you is, can cause sharp feelings of depression and anxiety, even in people who otherwise enjoy the holidays. Seasonal pattern depression affects millions of Americans, many of whom don’t otherwise present the indicators of depression during the rest of the year. For some, antidepressants and therapy are necessary treatments. However, there are several non-clinical alternatives recommended by therapists and mental health experts. These methods are not only effective for dealing with the symptoms of seasonal depression but are also great for creating new, positive memories to replace those negative associations and achieve lasting success. One suggestion is to start new traditions that replace old ones that are attached to painful memories. Something as simple as

But taking on an existing business isn’t all bells, whistles, and technology – it means taking on the responsibility of leading an existing team and building cohesion amidst all of the new changes. So far, it’s taken the shape of bringing the employees to the table to join the discussion, and the new owners discovered that the team was just as excited about expansion as they were. Through the newly established weekly meetings, Peltier discovered through an employee the viable possibilities of adding safe-cracking to Haven’s repertoire. The service would enable the company to assist safe-owners and law enforcement in need of access to various safes. Seeing the benefits in such a skillset prompted Peltier to send

that same employee to Tennessee to attend a week-long course on the subject. While entering the foray of a new industry and the overall responsibilities of business ownership has its challenges, Peltier says that it pales in comparison to the most significant reward - support from the staff and community. “[We’ve gotten] positive feedback from both employees and customers on how the business feels more alive and that their general interactions with the business are more positive. We would not be able to have jobs and run [Haven’s] if it was not for the support of our clients and the Central Valley,” says Peltier.

hosting get-togethers at a different location, preparing a different meal, or celebrating on a different day such as the day before or after a holiday can provide just enough change in the routine. These changes separate those feelings of grief and allow you to create new, positive memories. Sometimes radical changes are necessary, such as getting together with an entirely different group of family or friends, or even scrapping the traditional altogether and doing something like taking a trip or having a “non-Christmas” party. The point being to not be afraid to completely reinvent what the holidays mean to you if that’s what it takes to make them enjoyable again. Another suggestion, especially for those feeling isolated and alone during the holidays, is to volunteer. Helping out at a toy giveaway or feeding the homeless is a great way to create new, positive memories for the holidays. Not only that, but being part of making the holidays a little brighter for those who are less fortunate can be incredibly emotionally uplifting and put things in a different perspective. Maybe those problems that used to bring you down every holiday season won’t seem so bad when you spend the day making plates of food for people who haven’t eaten a hot meal for weeks. Most experts agree that the most important thing is to not give in to holiday pressures. If you’re just not up for attending the big family get-together, then it’s ok not

to go. If you need some time alone to clear your head, take it. Go for a walk, get back to nature, crank up your favorite music, put on bad movies and stuff your face with junk food. Don’t let anyone tell you how to process your feelings or deal with your holiday depression. That being said, if you find yourself experiencing the symptoms of seasonal depression, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Just in time for the holidays, California has launched the first free, statewide mental health line. You can call the Peer-Run Warm Line at 1(855)845-7415. They are staffed Monday through Friday from 7am until 11pm, Saturdays from 7am until 3pm, and Sundays from 7am until 9pm. They provide non-emergency emotional support for anyone struggling with their mental and emotional well-being. If, however, your depression is more severe and you are experiencing thoughts of suicide or self-harm, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, 1(800)273-8255 is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide confidential support, prevention, and crisis resources for anyone in need. If you or someone you know is struggling with seasonal depression, there are people and resources available to help. Check on your loved ones, and always remember that you are not alone.

s a new Fresnan from So Cal (I’ve been here for about a year now), I had a rude awakening when it came to the quality of air that we breathe out here in the Central Valley. Wow, I had no idea when I moved up here that the air would be this bad! To put it bluntly, Central Valley air sucks! It just does. And I’m not even being biased here. It really is terrible for you, full of all kinds of particular matter (PM) and smog. It definitely is negatively affecting your health every single time you step outside. The American Lung Association (ALA) made this fact pretty clear in its recent “State of the Air” 2019 report. It declared the Fresno-Madera-Hanford area to be the “most polluted” in the country for year-round particle pollution. In fact, if you go to its website (www.lung.org) and search “Fresno,” you’ll see the warning in bold red: “If you live in Fresno County, the air you breathe may put your health at risk.” Yes, it’s that serious. Maybe it’s not too surprising. After all, we do live in a valley that traps every kind of air emission seeping from our booming farming industry and growing metropolis. But, unlike coastal cities that benefit from a clean ocean breeze, Fresno’s polluted air stays trapped. This is really the worst place to live for people with asthma or other respiratory illnesses. The American Lung Association gave Fresno County a failing grade for its air quality. An “F” for consistent high Ozone levels, an “F” for daily Particle Pollution, and another “F” for annual Particle Pollution. It’s so bad that the ALA even encourages Fresno residents to environmental activism on its website - “The air you breathe needs your support,” it urges - and invites viewers to “Help us fight for air.” But how do we “fight for air”? The simple answer is to reduce the number of particles emitted in the air. This is why The San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District, aka “Valley Air District,” is-

But, politics aside, it urges the nation “to reduce emissions that worsen climate.” Without a doubt, climate’s current negative change directly and deleteriously impacts air quality and extreme weather events. A recent example of this is the horrible air quality that results from wildfires. Wildfires are a direct result of extreme weather events like droughts and heat waves that have created year-round conditions for severe natural hazards. And all

of this has multiple resounding effects on air quality. The American Lung Association calls climate change a “public health emergency.” It affirms: “‘State of the Air’ 2019 finds that climate change is fueling wildfires and weather patterns that are making air quality worse.” Living in the Central Valley, we experience this failing air quality daily, and we just think it’s normal because it’s all we know, day in and day out. But it’s not normal. Definitely not. We need to learn more so that we can mobilize an action plan of attack against this deadly “new normalcy” that is slowly and invisibly killing us. This is why I am eager to attend the upcoming American Geophysical Union Meeting in San Francisco from December 9th-13th. Over 20,000 Earth scientists from around the world will converge to discuss the current status of the climate and its repercussions. We will review the most recent available Earth data and theories to help reduce the adverse effects of anthropogenic climate change. And, I plan to meet up with those Davis researchers who studied RWB emissions here in the Central Valley to see what positive conclusions or recommendations they may have for our dire air crisis. Our Central Valley air problem is vast and multifaceted, for sure. It’s overwhelming in scope and size - but it’s a fight worth fighting since it affects not only our survival - but the survival of our future generations. Don’t we want our grandkids’ grandkids to be able to step outside and smile while they inhale a sweet deep breath of clean air? The alternative is barely breathing. --I. smiley G. Create Your Own Stock Many recipes call for chicken stock. One way to save money and time at the store is to create your own. Save any leftover poultry carcasses, wing tips, neck and bones. Add onion peels, celery tips, carrot tops and other vegetable scraps in the freezer. When you’re ready to make a batch, fill a large pot with the leftovers, cover with water, bring to a boil and simmer 1-2 hours for stock that can last up to one year. | FRESNOFLYER.COM |

Instructions: 1. Grease 6-8-quart slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray. 2. In slow cooker, mix garlic, spinach, artichokes, water chestnuts, mozzarella, feta, yogurt and red pepper flakes. 3. In a small saucepan over medium heat, simmer cooking wine 3 minutes. Stir in cream cheese and turn off heat. 4. Transfer cream cheese and wine mixture to slow cooker; add salt and pepper, to taste, and stir to combine ingredients. 5. Cook on low for two hours. 6. Transfer to a serving bowl and garnish with feta and roasted red peppers, if desired

White Hominy Chicken Chili Recipe courtesy of Cate Meade Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 4 hours Servings: 8

2 tablespoons olive or avocado oil 2 medium yellow onions, diced 1 1/4 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breast 1 packet of white chili seasoning 1 cup Holland House White Cooking Wine 1 jar (16 ounces) chunky salsa verde 4 cups unsalted vegetable stock 1 can (16 ounces) cannellini beans, drained and rinsed 1 large poblano or green pepper, diced 1 bag (10 ounces) frozen fire-roasted corn 1 can (29 ounces) white hominy, drained and rinsed 3 tablespoons cornmeal (optional) Toppings recommendations: Lime wedges, avocado, cilantro, sour cream, cheese, tortilla chips, jalapenos Instructions: 1. Turn slow cooker on low; add oil, onions and chicken. Distribute chili seasoning evenly over chicken and onions. 2. Add cooking wine, salsa verde and chicken stock. 3. Cover and cook 3 hours. 4. Remove chicken and allow to rest, covered, for 15 minutes before shredding. 5. Add beans, peppers, corn and hominy to slow cooker. For thicker consistency, add cornmeal, if desired. Cook on high 1 hour, stirring occasionally. 6. ’ve got them…you’ve got them… we’ve all got them… Doesn’t it seem like everything we buy needs some type of battery? Most batteries aren’t rechargeable, leaving us with several dead batteries around the house. But make no mistake… just because these batteries are dead doesn’t mean that they are any less dangerous to humans or our environment. Batteries contain toxic or corrosive material such as heavy metals, cadmium and lead acid. All batteries must be taken to a household hazardous waste facility or authorized waste handler. Batteries pose a serious hazardous threat to us when they are discarded improperly. Old batteries can leak acid when they are sitting around and button cell batteries are attractive to children because they are small and shiny. If accidently ingested, batteries can cause serious health effects, including death. Make sure to keep all batteries (new or used) away from children. This includes all batteries of sizes AAA, AA, C, D, button cell, 9 Volt and any other batteries, both rechargeable and single use.
