EDITOR’S NOTE

California is buzzing with anticipation for the summer. Soon, restrictions and masks will be a thing of the past, and we’ll be diving headfirst into every experience we’ve been deprived of over the last year or more. But before you throw caution to the wind and bolt through the door with a bucket list for the next few months in hand, I ask that you consider a few things.

First and foremost, take it slow. It’s been a long time since we’ve all had to share the same space and navigate the complex yet awkward landscape of human interaction. You’d be surprised how rusty those interpersonal communication skills can get after a few months of not using them in a pre-pandemic capacity. In fact, I recently interviewed someone who repeatedly needed to stop and reorganize her thoughts.

During a pause, frustrated with herself, she looked at me and said, “I’m so sorry, it’s been a while since I’ve had to talk to someone in person.”

Whether you’ll need to reacclimate to the social dance or not, you’ll come across plenty who will. Take things in stride and with a grain of salt – likely more than you’ve ever done before. Just as we had to figure out how to live this life separate from one another, we’ll have to figure out how to be together again.

Secondly, as you rush to every corner of this state, country, or world, don’t forget about the local mom n’ pops who managed to survive a catastrophic year for small business. There are

plenty who did not make it, and the ones who did probably got through it at a significant cost to them.

Summer is typically the time many small businesses earn their largest revenue, helping them to weather the slimmer months of winter. Many of them will be relying on this summer to build that squirrel fund and make up for the starving months of the previous year. This may be the summer that helps them determine if there will be any more.

Lastly, I urge you to keep our mountain communities in mind as you plan your adventures. The summer of 2020 was fairly limited to outdoor activities, such as camping and hiking, and looking at the multitude of options this summer, maybe you’re all camped out. But the wildfires last year devastated much of our neighbors in the mountains, many of whom have spent these last few months rebuilding if they’re able to rebuild at all. And like other businesses, the resorts, restaurants, and shops there earn much of their income in the summer and from Central Valley residents.

Simply by enjoying ourselves in small business establishments, whether in the gorgeous scenery of Huntington Lake, Bass Lake, or Shaver Lake or in the mom n pop shops of our own neighborhoods, we can help restore our communities. This summer is more than just cutting loose and going hog-wild; it’s about moving forward together.

tourism was either significantly restricted, or shut down entirely for the past year. With the state finally fully re-opening on June 15th, San Francisco once again will become the premier travel destination for literally everything anyone could ever want from a California vacation experience.

San Francisco is famous for so many reasons. It is a city with a rich and storied history. From its gold rush beginnings and proud immigrant heritage, to being on the frontlines of the fight for civil rights and equality, to the famous hippie movement of the “Summer of Love” in the 60s. San Francisco is a cultural melting pot with a community and world-class dining scene to match. Over 30 Michelin starred restaurants, some of the best restaurants and cafes in the world, are located in San Francisco. Not to mention shopping that runs the spectrum from the second-hand stores, oddity curious, and hippy chic shops on Haight Street, to high-end fashion boutiques and art galleries in trendy SOMA.

Just up Highway 1 is San Simeon, home to the world-famous Hearst Castle, which offers daily tours.

Or, head south just a few minutes to Harmony, an art community with a population of 17 that’s straight off the cover of a stor ybook. Visit the glass blower and pick up a hand-made, one-of-a-kind piece of art to commemorate your trip. Then grab a delicious handmade ice cream cone before snapping all the ‘gram-worthy selfies you can next to the picturesque shops, decorated trees, or chapel.

With average summer temperatures in the low-60’s, you may not want to return to the punishing triple-digits in the Valley after you visit Cambria. But, with the Central Coast only about a 2-hour drive from Fresno, maybe you could just compromise and visit there every weekend instead?

San Francisco

One of the most beautiful cities in the world, San Francisco also imposed some of the strictest COVID-19 restrictions in the state in an effort to control the spread of the virus. Being the most densely-populated city in the state, they couldn’t afford not to take the pandemic seriously. As such, much of what made San Francisco such a beacon for international

June is Pride month, and nobody does Pride like San Francisco! Visit the Castro and experience the sights, sounds, and celebration first-hand.

And we haven’t even mentioned the Golden Gate Bridge, Golden Gate Park, the famous Painted Ladies houses, the Presidio, or the beaches packed with kite boarders, taking advantage of San Francisco’s swift ocean breezes to get dizzying air as they launch from the choppy waves.

There is just no other city in California quite like San Francisco. With so many different ways to see the city, you can vacation there a hundred times and never have the same experience twice. To plan one of many epic San Francisco vacation experiences, visit https://www.sftravel.com/

These are just some of the hundreds of fun and exciting events and destinations ready for you to create a summer full of memories. The Fresno Flyer recommends to always make sure you contact businesses or venues to inquire about their specific COVID policies if you have any questions before making vacation plans. Get vaccinated, stay safe, and go have some fun!

9. Charlemagne, the 8th-century king of the Franks, united much of Western Europe through military campaigns and has been called the “king and father of Europe” [PDF]. Charlemagne was also a devoted dad to about 18 children, and today, most Europeans may be able to claim Charlemagne as their ancestor.

10. Kurt Vonnegut was (for a short time) Geraldo Rivera’s father-inlaw. Rivera’s marriage to Edith Vonnegut ended in 1974 because of his womanizing. Always with You

"Grief never ends, but it changes. It is a passage, not a place to stay. Grief is not a sign of weakness nor a lack of faith. It is the price of love." - unknown

When we think of the process of letting go after experiencing grief, we think of the words ebb and flow. The stages of grief can occur in no particular order. When we least expect them, often, after we have experienced loss, emotions ebb and flow unexpectedly as we experience events triggered by environmental surroundings. Things as commonplace as music, food, fragrances, family, celebrations, church, mornings, babies, dancing, photographs, friends, hospitals, memories, traveling, flowers, smells, candles, alcohol, pets, and even the weather can trigger any of the stages of grief. Those stages are denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance

The stages may or may not present in that particular order. It is important to note that many people experience the stages multiple times according to triggers, emotions/ mood, and how much coping skills a person has to recognize symptoms of grief. It is okay to grieve at your own pace; we aren’t born with a rule book for loss. When we experience a loss, we never truly get over the loss; instead, we move forward with it.

Remember, loss is loss. Loss doesn’t necessarily have to take the form of physical death, either. Loss is personal; it arrives in many forms - anything that affects the quality of life and is a sudden change and transition. It is traumatizing and riveting.

Write a Letter: If the loss you are experiencing is the death of someone, write a letter to the person and then from the person. This practice skill allows you to say and reflect what you need to tell them, what you want them to know. Perhaps it is something you didn’t get the opportunity to say while they were alive. Then write a letter back to yourself from them and include what you need to hear them tell you if they were still here.

When we lose love, when we experience a loss, it isn’t just the person we are grieving for; it is the moments, the time, the memories, the experiences, and the words that could have been. It is this that we are grieving, what will never be again.

So, write it down. Write down what has been left unsaid and what you wish could have been said to you. We aren’t always offered the opportunity for closure with loss. Still, we can help ourselves through the process by allowing some healing to take place through the written word.

For22 weeks, Tower District residents and supporters have demonstrated against the sale of the Tower Theatre to Adventure Church. No one is doing this for fun. The very survival of the Tower District is at stake. The sale of the Tower District’s namesake to a conservative, homophobic church threatens to destroy everything that makes the Tower District a queer-affirming, artistic, bohemian, livable neighborhood.

What’s the big deal about a church in the Tower District?

By itself, a church operating in the Tower District is not a problem. There are 28 churches within a two-mile radius of the Tower Theatre, including Adventure Church’s primary location at Palm south of Olive. But a church permanently located in the Tower Theatre will create huge problems for the economy and culture of the Tower District.

The existing zoning law is crystal clear: the Tower Theatre is in an area zoned Commercial Main Street, in which public and religious assembly are not permitted in facilities larger than 2,000 square feet. This zoning does not discriminate against religion; it equally prohibits operating the theater as a private club, community center, or conference center.

The California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control may deny liquor licenses to premises within 600 feet of a church. This isn’t automatic; existing bars would not be immediately affected. But in the long term, this would gradually stop new bars and restaurants from opening in the Tower District. Whenever a new business applies for a liquor license, or whenever a business changes ownership, the liquor license could be challenged.

Adventure Church has claimed that they will not oppose liquor licenses in the Tower District, but even if you believe that the church has no way of guaranteeing that members of the public won’t challenge a liquor license or that ABC won’t deny a license.

Adventure Church has every right to

whatever doctrine it believes, but its doctrine is not compatible with Tower District values. Adventure is part of the Foursquare Church, a non-queer-a firming denomination that believes that homosexuality is a sin, will not admit queer people into church leadership, and will not hold same-sex wedding ceremonies.

Adventure Church has claimed that they do not want to change the Tower District. This is impossible to believe, given the church’s previous rhetoric about providing a “redemptive lift” to the neighborhood. Members of Adventure Church have been seen harassing bar patrons and gay youths on the street. It’s not difficult to see exactly what Adventure’s “redemptive lift” implies.

Current status of the sale. Fortunately, the sale of the Tower Theatre has been blocked since Sequoia Brewing Company filed its lawsuit in February. Sequoia, one of the tenants of Laurence Abbate, who owns the entire block the Tower Theatre occupies, alleges in their lawsuit that the sale violates their first right of refusal to buy the property, as guaranteed in their rental agreement.

After four months of litigation, Sequoia’s lawsuit has yet to go to trial. A hearing in Fresno and an appeal to a higher state court focused on whether the sale to Adventure Church should be blocked until Sequoia’s case is tried. The sale is still blocked as of this writing, but that could be reversed by a hearing later in June. In April, the attorney for Tower Theatre Properties argued in a filing that the escrow period for the sale had expired, and the sale was off. However, in the same week, Abbate told the media that he would sell the theater to Adventure Church as soon as possible.

Will zoning ever be enforced?

Adventure Church began holding Sunday services at the Tower Theatre last summer and continued until Jan. 5, when the Fresno city attorney issued a cease-and-desist letter to Abbate and Adventure Church, notifying them that religious

assembly on the property was a zoning violation.

In May, Adventure Church resumed services at the Tower Theatre, and this time the City backed off its commitment to enforce its laws. After three weeks of services and numerous complaints to city code enforcement, the City has refused to cite Abbate or Tower Theatre for zoning violations.

The City is not enforcing zoning because city officials want to avoid a lawsuit they fear they can’t win. Given the deference that federal courts have shown to conservative evangelical Christian churches, this isn’t an unreasonable fear. City officials reason that if they never enforce zoning, the church can’t sue the City. But this is creating a dangerous precedent that the mere threat of a lawsuit by a religious group can overturn a law.

The City’s surrender on zoning reveals some painful truths about Fresno’s subservience to the Christian Right. No city in coastal California would allow a conservative evangelical church to take over a historic landmark in the heart of its gay neighborhood. No other religious organization, not a mosque, not a synagogue, not even a progressive Christian church, would be allowed to openly violate the law and get away with it. City officials believe they’re protecting the City from a lawsuit. Still, the effect of their action is to grant extra privileges to a homophobic church while denying legal protections to gay residents and gay-owned businesses.

What can you do?

The only thing ordinary citizens can do to transplant a spine into our city leadership is the relentless pressure of public opinion. The mayor and the City Council must see that they will pay a political price for abandoning the Tower District. Please join our weekly demonstrations. Write letters to the mayor and every member of the city council. Help us keep the pressure up. You can find more information on the Facebook page of the Save the Tower Theatre Demonstration Committee, https://www.facebook.com/ SavetheTowerDemonstrationCommittee.

Shaver Lake

Shaver Lake

Sierra National Forest

When you vacation at picturesque Shaver Lake—a sapphire gem hugged by pine forest in the granite-studded Sierra Nevada Mountains—megawatts will be the furthest thing from your mind. But this boulder-lined reservoir 50 miles northeast of Fresno is a critical link in one of California’s oldest hydroelectric chains, built by Southern California Edison in 1927 to supply Los Angeles with power.

While the lake is busy generating electricity, you’ll occupy yourself with jet-skiing, swimming, and fishing. Rent a Waverunner or a ski boat at Shaver Lake Water Sports or Sierra Marina, then rev up the horsepower and zoom around the lake’s placid surface. If you’re just learning how to get up on one ski, losing your balance is a pleasure. Shaver’s temperature warms up nicely by mid-summer, thanks to a mid-level elevation of 5,200 feet. Sun-worshippers pick their spots on the beach and cool off with long, leisurely swims.

Kayakers and canoeists seek out Shaver’s quiet coves for paddling, while anglers troll their boats around the deep inlets or cast a line from shore, hoping to hook into a rainbow trout, brown trout, kokanee salmon, or smallmouth bass. Most are pan-sized, but 10-pound trout are not uncommon. If your

family is new to fishing, book a trip with Dick’s Fishing Charters—Captain Dick will make sure your kids catch fish.

On Shaver’s western shore, Camp Edison’s 252 campsites provide easy access to the water and an unusual bonus: electricity, cable television, and high-speed wifi, courtesy of the hydroelectric project. (Don’t tell your boss that you can receive emails on vacation.) A small general store provides everything you might have forgotten when you left home. Thirty-five miles of trails surround the lake, and even more are found “up the hill” at Huntington Lake, a 20-mile drive. Set out for a hike, or let Trigger do the walking—Shaver Stable offers one-hour, two-hour, and longer guided horseback rides.

Non-campers can book a cabin or room at the Shaver Lake Village Hotel or Elliott House Bed and Breakfast. Shaver Lake Village is tiny, but you’ll find great food at the surprisingly epicurean Seasons Bistro and Tavern, the Blue Sky Cafe, or the family favorite, Shaver Lake Pizza.

For an option that quenches hunger (and thirst) without sacrificing nutrition, try an assortment of ways to enjoy watermelon. As a refreshing ingredient or standalone treat, watermelon includes just 80 calories and no fat while providing an excellent source of vitamin C (25%) and higher levels of lycopene (12.7 mg per 2-cup serving) –an antioxidant being studied for its role in sun protection – than any other fresh fruit or vegetable. Plus, it’s made of 92% water, meaning it’s a flavorful way to encourage kids to rehydrate during some fun in the sun. Make watermelon part of a balanced snack plate with this Kids Charcuterie Snack Board including assorted watermelon, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, sliced veggies, sliced fruits, crackers, pretzels and more. In addition to the nutritional benefits, the simplicity of this snack means children can help assemble it while showing off their creativity.

kinetic powers. She’s unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey. Over the course of her first term at school, Matilda and Miss Honey have a profound effect on each other’s lives, as Miss Honey begins not only to recognize but also appreciate Matilda’s extraordinary personality. Matilda’s school life isn’t completely smooth sailing, however – the school’s mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don’t abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils’ saving grace! Children and adults alike will be thrilled and delighted by the story of the special little girl with an extraordinary imagination.
