The Tower Theatre controversy continues to hit new strides. Out-oftown, driveby commentators dip a toe into the issue and speak with an authority they didn’t earn. The City refuses to enforce its laws equally, and misinformation runs rampant. You must be angry. I know I am. Aside from the ongoing list of things to be angry about, you know what really gets me? The argument that churches “clean up” the neighborhoods where they reside. That’s just not true - at least for Fresno’s Tower and downtown areas. Cornerstone Church took over the Wilson Theater in downtown Fresno a few years ago and has quietly maintained its hold there. While it doesn’t make any public claims that it will improve the neighborhood, the sheer presence of the church hasn’t made any impact on the quality of it, either. The homeless still seek shelter in the same places, camping in rows along the sidewalk or nearby train tracks. The same issues continue to plague the area. And likely will continue to do so with or without the church’s presence. Adventure Church has held its location on Palm Avenue for several years, and in the decade that I’ve lived in the area, nothing has changed. In fact, the transient presence has increased within the last 3-4 years. It’s an ongoing comment for residents on the Nextdoor App - a social media-esque platform for neigh-

bors in a geographic area to connect. The neighbors often discuss trends in the neighborhood, including criminal or suspicious activity. There is no mention of Adventure Church or any “cleaning up” they’ve done for the community. They’ve been a ghost, silently existing in their bubble on Palm Avenue, not disturbing anyone - until they made a grab for Tower Theatre. It’s not to say the church is responsible for the increase of transient activity or for reigning it in. However, their most prevalent argument is that they’ll “clean up” the Tower District. And while residents clap back that they don’t need any saving, thank you very much, the question remains. Aside from the never-ending list of reasons why they should not be in the Tower Theatre, what successful “cleaning up” have they done previously, anyway? If that’s the claim, where’s the proof ? Their track record thus far proves they have either no genuine interest or the ability to do so. Nothing has changed in the Palm/Olive area. It’s the same amount of debris, transient presence (if not more), and crime. And if they truly came to “save” the neighborhood, what’s to stop them from doing it from the location they have now? It’s still in the Tower District. My guess is that the theatre serves as a catalyst to force cultural change on a community that doesn’t need or want it. And this notion of “cleaning up” the neighborhood is nothing but smoke and mirrors.

hen the Fresno Flyer published its annual food issue last August, the restaurant industry across the state was reeling. It was five months into the shutdown caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, and independent restaurateurs were just starting to find their footing in a new world. Providing take-out and utilizing independent food delivery services like Uber Eats and GrubHub kept the doors open for most local eateries. However, revenues still took a major hit across the state as many patrons opted for home-cooked meals or cheaper chain restaurants and fast-food drive-thrus. California officially reopened with no restrictions in June, and limited capacity dining has been available for months before that. Even so, many local restaurants are still struggling to recover from the economic impact of the pandemic. Now, more than ever, it is crucial to support your favorite local nosh spot. Here are just a few fantastic and diverse eateries that make the local food scene so uniquely the Central Valley.

The Arizola’s had long imagined opening Señor Ají. Mauricio loves to cook, having grown up with his mom’s home cooking, and Lilian had studied hospitality management. Señor Ají uses fresh produce from local farmers, along with the highest quality ingredients directly from Peru. They have menu items that cater to vegetarians, meat, and fish lovers alike. La Elegante Taqueria 1423 Kern St. Fresno (559) 497-5844 facebook.com/LaEleganteTacos IG: @_laelegante Hours: Tues-Sat 10am-2pm Closed Sunday and Monday One of downtown Fresno’s best-kept secrets is this tiny taqueria that’s been a local favorite since it opened back in 1985. It’s not for lack of fanfare - La Elegante was voted “Best Tacos in Fresno” in a recent ABC 30 Action News poll. With its simple, nondescript exterior and limited hours of operation, it can be easy to miss if you don’t know where - or when - to look. However, if you find yourself heading down Kern Street around lunchtime, the line of customers standing outside waiting to get in will let you know you’re in the right place. Celia and Benito Arenas moved from Los Angeles to Fresno with their five children Abelardo, Analia, Adolfo, Adriana, and Alejandra, in 1984. They opened the first La Elegante food truck soon after. In 1993, due to the popularity of the food truck, they decided to open the first brick-and-mortar restaurant right in the heart of Chinatown. Their children took the lead and began running the restaurant and have been feeding hungry Fresno taco enthusiasts ever since. They still have the taco truck as well, parked on the corner of Muscat and Maple. Their menu is simple, featuring the standard taqueria favorites - tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and tortas - as well as menudo, birria, chile verde, and ceviche. They use only the freshest ingredients, and you can taste the quality in every bite.

adly, as you can see by now, dear reader, the coronavirus is still doing its nasty thing. It’s hijacking your beautiful, healthy human cells and rapidly replicating inside of them like the worst unruly squatter you could ever imagine. It’s destroying you everywhere it goes with its massive and resilient legion of advanced and highly evolved virions. Today’s coronavirus doesn’t play. Well, it never did. To date, it has killed over 613,000 Americans - friends and family members - people you know and love. Across the globe, it has cut short and stolen the lives of over 4.2 million people of all ages and races, from all walks of life - all in just a little over a year. And, here in Fresno County, California’s central valley county of about one million people, over 105,000 have been infected. That’s more than 10% of our population. And, of these infected, 1,744 of our dear friends and family have prematurely died because of it. As we’ve been saying all along: this is no joke. Remember when we heard ignorant folks mocking us, trying to convince us that the coronavirus is ‘less dangerous’ or ‘less deadly’ than the flu? Yeah, I’m glad we didn’t listen to those idiots either. Instead, what we did was take this viral threat seriously. We put aside partisan games and stupid politics, and we focused on the science. And, we quickly learned that, until the development of a vaccine, we all would have to make sure that everyone limited their contact with others. That meant in public spaces, or shelter-in-place, and cover and protect our airways - since that was the primary way the virus spreads, in the unseen air. This is why masks became so important. And all of this all makes a lot of sense, right? It’s no conspiracy. No one is trying to take your freedoms or rights away with a mask. All we want to do is protect our airways - our nose and mouth. And, if you defend your airways too, we all could squash this virus in no time. Because if the coronavirus can’t spread from person to person, then the pandemic ends. Simple as that. Now, of course, masks aren’t going to cure you of any sickness. Your mask won’t

kill the coronavirus - or any virus or bacteria, for that matter. And since there is no cure for the coronavirus, the only thing we could do is try to isolate (shelter-in-place) and curtail its momentum (wear a mask). We can’t kill it, but we can stop it in its tracks - especially now, with our most effective defense against Covid: the vaccine. There are three different free vaccines available in the U.S., each developed by Pfizer, Moderna, or Johnson & Johnson. Studies show the highest vaccine efficacy rates are with the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, which are RNA vaccines. Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine is a viral vector vaccine, and its efficiency rate is between 5070%. Yet every vaccine fully protects against severe disease, which is a relief. Because this new ‘super strain’ virus - called the ‘Delta’ strain - is a lot more transmissible and deadly than ever before. It is now the dominant strain in the U.S. and most of the new Covid cases. This ‘Delta’ variant is 60% more contagious than the earlier variant - ‘Alpha’ - that developed and emerged in the U.K. this past December. (If you haven’t yet realized, viruses replicate and evolve very, very rapidly). Things are quickly getting out of hand. In fact, the ‘Alpha’ and ‘Delta’ strains are not the only new variant coronaviruses that are currently circulating our globe. No, there’s a lot more. For example, the ‘Beta’ strain developed out of South Africa last May and the ‘Gamma’ variant out of Brazil this past January. But, what do you know about the ‘Lambda’ variant out of Peru? (And, if there is a ‘Lambda’ variant, you know there are probably also ‘Eta,’ ‘Iota,’ and ‘Kappa’ variants too. Exactly). But don’t worry, when all 24 Greek letters are all used up, the WHO will be ready with a new coronavirus name game to keep track of all the variants that we are creating. Wait - we are creating variants what? Yes - especially in places with no vaccine or any unified community effort to fight viral spread. For example, here in the U.S., we’re keeping the virus alive and well by allowing it to evolve among us freely. When we are not vaccinated and social dis| FRESNOFLYER.COM |

tancing or wearing our masks in public - we unknowingly and inadvertently pass it to each other, and it gets faster and stronger. And more variants emerge. And more people get sick. And more people die. And this nightmare never stops. WHO’s Health Emergency Program executive director Dr. Mike Ryan knows that more deadly coronavirus variants will emerge if we don’t take immediate action. (To be fair, they probably will still appear even if we do - but if we don’t, there will be much more suffering and death). This ‘Delta’ variant is “...faster, it is fitter, [and] it will pick off the more vulnerable more efficiently than previous variants,” Dr. Ryan warns. In addition, studies have shown that the ‘Delta’ variant produces a much greater viral load than any other coronavirus strain thus far - shedding about 1,000 times more viral particles than previous variants. That explains how it spreads so much more rapidly - making it the most dangerous strain to date. But that’s only a matter of time. And viruses like time, you know. All they want is a little bit of yours. At least, that’s all the coronavirus wanted from my two dear uncles who died from Covid this past month. Two great men with a whole lot more love and life in them robbed of their precious time. But it didn’t have to be this way. I dedicate this MFD installment to my tíos - but not only mine - to every tío and tía of yours, dear reader, who has fallen to this vicious viral enemy. Rest in peace, Que Dios les bendiga. May we all get vaccinated now. May we all continue to social distance as appropriate. May we all continue to wear our masks as appropriate. Until next time, friends.

ediate - to bring resolution to a dispute, whether it is between yourself and another or a group representing two sides. The goal is to reach an agreement both parties can live with, so they can move forward. Meditation - the act of deep focus and thought in a peaceful, serene setting, perhaps with soothing chimes or the sound of the ocean. The purpose is to reach a spiritual and relaxing state. These two states of thought - mediate and meditate - go together to achieve closure or resolution that individuals and support groups seek. So we have to mediate thoughts, and that will ultimately allow us to meditate with clarity and insight, clearing the mind of unnecessary “chatter.” It is quite common to experience increased mind chatter through transitional and challenging times. Seeking support to maintain stability and provide guidance is ultimate, but sometimes we can’t do that for numerous reasons, e.g., busy schedules or anxiety. Mediating your thoughts before meditation helps decrease stress, bring more clarity, and allow you to organize emotionally and mentally the things you need to address. Focus: Settle into a comfortable position. Sometimes chanting music, lighting a candle, and adding a pillow is enough to relax and focus. Then, with a pen and paper, write down three things that are most mentally and emotionally pressing to you today - the pesky annoying topics pulling you from your present goal. If it is something you continue to circle back to daily, you want to write this down and inspect what it is that keeps you connected to it. After, step back and look at the three things you have written down. Ask

...‘Mediate’ cont’d from pg 5 yourself, why are those things appearing? Is the answer apparent or less obvious? Do you need more time to figure it out? Once you have this resolved, write it down and move to the next one and then the next one. Again, limit your attention to only analyze three issues. If you find you have more than three, put those aside for another mediation and meditation session. This process may take more than the time you anticipated, but it is worth the time you give to it. Once you have closure, you can move forward and meditate. Whether utilizing this method during your quiet time at home, in a group setting elsewhere, or in a support group with a professional, this practice will ease your way to and through a more spiritual and rewarding meditation experience. Life is a series of transitional phases where we learn to adapt and adjust to whatever we’re going through. It is common to look around and wonder how we got here. Though it is essential to evaluate your choices and actions that brought these particular circumstances, we should also practice embracing our time of transition. These are phases of growth and change, and they allow us the opportunity to practice looking for the good in times of hardship. May your next mediation to meditation take you on a fulfilling journey. --Nancy Zanicchi Bobb Counseling Psychology M.A., author & narrator of “I Only Paint in Watercolors.” Founder of Mediate to Meditate, consultant/speaker for transition, loss & grief. Adventure church’s occupation of the Tower Theatre threatens a bleak future for tower district restaurants By Jaguar Bennett jaguarbennett@gmail.com

H

ave you ever seen a thriving restaurant district built around a church? The ongoing illegal occupation of the Tower Theatre by Adventure Church will soon test whether a church-centered neighborhood can sustain a vibrant restaurant scene. In effect, the Tower District will be subjected to an unasked-for economic experiment. So what happens to a restaurant district when its most significant commercial space is replaced by a church? Let me venture a hypothesis. No matter what spiritual benefits anyone might think Adventure Church will provide the Tower District, a church can’t replace the economic stimulus of a working commercial theater. Planting a church in the heart of a commercial district of restaurants, bars, and nightclubs will inevitably change the economy and character of the neighborhood. The direct threat that Adventure Church poses to Tower District residents is the possibility of a rezoning that can affect liquor licenses. For many restaurants, liquor licenses are a necessity for doing business. Who doesn’t like a tasty cocktail, beer, or glass of wine with a meal, especially in a hard-drinking town like Fresno? But liquor licenses are heavily regulated, owing to a leftover Prohibition-era mentality that views open alcohol consumption as a threat to public morals. Zoning laws consider churches, along with parks and schools, as “sensitive-use” areas and prohibits placing businesses with liquor licenses within 1,000 feet of a sensitive-use zone. In addition to these restrictions in zoning law, the state Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control has the power to decline requests for liquor licenses within 600 feet of a church. Placing a church at the Tower Theatre would create a sensitive zone that would include many favorite Tower District restaurants. Those

including Livingstone’s, Veni Vidi Vici, Me-N-Eds, Irene’s, Sequoia Brewing Co, and Bobby Salazar’s, all of which sell alcohol. If Adventure Church successfully plants itself in the Tower Theatre, none of these businesses will lose their liquor licenses immediately. But the proximity of a church would be an issue if existing businesses want to transfer, extend or renew their liquor licenses. Even more worrisome for the future, the closeness of a church may prevent new restaurants from ever getting a liquor license, creating a permanent limit on new businesses in the Tower District. The restaurant business is volatile, especially in the Tower District. Restaurants close all the time, but new businesses frequently reopen old locations. In recent years, Bocca Taqueria became Aromas, and Charlotte’s Bakery became Casa de Tamales, which then became Banzai. If no new liquor licenses are granted in the Tower District, restaurants that close may never be replaced. We may not see the effects right now, or even in the next year. But looking ahead five or ten years, we may see more and more permanently closed restaurant buildings, weakening the neighborhood economy, reducing city revenue, and creating zones of urban blight. Whether this nightmare scenario will happen depends on the future zoning of the Tower Theatre, which Adventure Church and theater owner Laurence Abbate seem happy to leave in permanent limbo. In January, City of Fresno officials advised Abbate and Adventure Church that religious assembly is not permitted in the Tower Theatre’s current zoning. The City further informed Abbate and the church that holding religious services at the Tower Theatre would require a formal rezoning process and a conditional-use permit. However, Adventure Church has

| FEATURED | DINING | CALENDAR | MUSIC | CLASSIFIEDS |

| FRESNOFLYER.COM |

never applied for a rezoning and insists that no rezoning is required, despite the plain language of the zoning code. No doubt Adventure Church is aware that a rezoning would require public meetings where local residents and business owners can voice their objections to drastic changes that will permanently alter the neighborhood’s economy. The zoning of the Tower Theatre can’t remain in limbo forever. Still, even without a formal zoning change, the presence of Adventure Church in the building will be an ongoing threat to local restaurants. Adventure has repeatedly claimed they have no intention of challenging liquor licenses, but any member of the public can challenge a liquor license. Thus, a handful of ‘Karens’ could cite the theatre’s use for Sunday services as a pretext for challenging new liquor licenses, even if the property is never rezoned. Even if all the legal issues can be waved away, there is still the question of what positive value Adventure Church will add to the local economy. As a working commercial theater, the Tower Theatre attracts a wide variety of people to the Tower District who patronize local bars and restaurants. Churchgoers come once a week and leave without stopping at local businesses. Adventure Church claims they will continue to operate the Tower as a theatre, but it’s unclear how that’s possible. Local arts organizations such as Reel Pride, Fresno Filmworks, and the Rogue Festival are declining to work with a homophobic church. Additionally, touring acts seem to be steering clear of the Tower Theatre controversy. So instead of saving the Tower Theatre, Adventure Church may put the theater into permanent decline—and with it, the local restaurant scene.

(Superior Oversize Sundae) for your birthday and staring wide-eyed at the 7 massive scoops of ice cream, sherbet, and strawberry freeze, topped with hot fudge, nuts, bananas, and a cherry on top, before grabbing a spoon and digging in to the 3 ½ lb monster with a few of your closest friends in a futile effort to finish it all. Superior Dairy has been serving the south valley’s best ice cream since 1929, and even sells its most popular flavors in local grocery stores for those who’d rather skip the perpetually packed parlor and enjoy their favorite scoop at home in their PJ’s. Truly, no trip to Hanford is complete without a stop at this iconic spot. They also serve a variety of fresh and delicious sandwiches, salads, and soups, so you can pretend you didn’t just go there to pig out on all that ice cream.

Having opened their doors just 3 months before the shutdown was announced, they were still struggling to carve out a space for themselves and build a loyal customer base. Fortunately for them, Cham doesn’t believe in taking

a day off. Oh, and they happen to make some of the best donuts in the south valley. Inspired by the decadent delights featured on social media by gourmet donut shops around the country, Michelle works with Cham to create Instagram-worthy treats like their s’mores donut, topped with crumbled graham cracker, a mini Hershey’s bar, and a large toasted marshmallow, or their maple bacon donut, as well as more subtle yet delicious flavors like the popular lemon poppyseed and matcha donuts. They recently added frappes, lattes, and traditional teas from L.T. Sue in Hanford’s historical China Alley to their menu, and have plans for even more surprises in the future. “The kindness, appre-

ciation, and support from the community is what makes this all worth it.” Michelle beams. “Plus, seeing how excited the kids get over our crazy-looking donuts gives us a little giggle and reminds us why we wanted to bring our style of donuts to Hanford!”

upcoming Concert Bringing Berner Back By Dave Fountinelle | dave@fresnoflyer.com

T

he last time Brad Jaurique brought hiphop artist Berner to Fresno’s Woodward Park, back in 2014, the event caused quite an uproar with some residents. Held on 4/20 - a counterculture holiday celebrating cannabis consumption - and nicknamed “The Fresno Smokeout,” the concert outraged a number of parents and health advocates, who called upon city officials to shut down the performance. However, due to the willingness of the promoters and performers to follow the law and abide by venue rules, law enforcement refused. Critics demanded stricter regulations be put in place to prevent future cannabis-themed events from being held there. When the smoke cleared, the concert proceeded without incident, and by all accounts, was a huge success. Attendees were well-behaved, the Fresno Police Department reported no major disturbances, and within days the controversy had faded into a hazy memory. Fast forward to 2021, and the landscape in Fresno is vastly different than it was seven years ago. With the legalization of recreational cannabis in California, attitudes regarding cannabis culture and the promotion of smoke-friendly events have changed significantly. Many of the parents who publicly criticized The Fresno Smokeout in 2014 are likely regular customers of the cannabis delivery services. These services currently supply Fresno connoisseurs in the absence of storefront dispensaries within the city. For Jourique, the change in attitudes is as striking as it is encouraging. “It’s funny how many of the same people who came out against The Fresno Smokeout back in 2014 are now pro-cannabis and even applying for licenses to open dispensaries now,” he muses. Indeed, with Fresno currently in the middle of a lengthy and controversy-laden licensing process that will ultimately bring 21 cannabis dispensaries to the city in 2022, the contrast in public opinion between then and now couldn’t be any sharper. And for Berner in particular, that shift in attitude is especially noteworthy as he is among those vying for one of Fresno’s dispensary licenses. Berner is the founder and co-owner of Cookies, a popular and successful cannabis, clothing, and lifestyle company, with dispen-

saries all over California. With council approval, his next storefront will be in the same city that had once debated imposing regulations to prevent him from performing there again. This time, it won’t be Woodward Park that hosts Berner’s return to Fresno but Chukchansi Park instead. On July 10th, Jaurique brought Snow Tha Product to the venue. And despite it being one of the hottest days of the year and less than a month after the state reopened for live concerts, over 2,000 people were in attendance. The Fresno show made it one of Snow’s most successful dates on her tour. Jaurique hopes to strike gold once again when he brings Berner back to Fresno to perform there on September 11th. In addition to launching one of the country’s most successful cannabis culture brands, Berner has built a prolific and successful career as a rapper and record label founder. Signed to Wiz Khalifa’s Taylor Gang Entertainment label since 2012, Berner has released 16 albums, with several of them charting on the Billboard R&B and Hip-Hop charts. In addition to his solo work, Berner has also collaborated with several chart-topping hip hop artists, including The Jacka, B-Real Cam’ron, Styles P, Young Dolph, and Mozzy. Berner has worked hard to be one of the greats in the Bay Area hip-hop scene, working with successful hit-making producers like Scott Storch, RZA, and Cozmo. Berner hopes that his success can inspire other Latinx artists and encourage them to follow their dreams and never give up. Along with Berner, Jaurique is bringing Bay Area legend E-40 to join the bill. E-40 has released 28 albums over his 30+ year career as a chart-topping rapper and producer. In addition to his successful rap career, E-40 is also a mogul in the beverage industry. He released an energy drink brand called “40 Water” in 2007. He followed up with a successful foray into winemaking under his real name Earl Stevens. In 2015, Stevens launched a line of malt liquor, called simply “E-40”. Fresno hip hop fans have always embraced Bay Area artists, and E-40 is no exception. His performances here consistently sell out, and Jaurique expects the September 11th show with Berner to have an equally impressive turnout. | FRESNOFLYER.COM |

Jaurique has one more special surprise for the fans that he’s especially excited to announce. The promoter is good friends with Lil Eazy, the son of late NWA founder Eazy E. September 7th marks Eazy E’s birthday, and Jaurique is proud to host Lil Eazy on the lineup for the 11th. He’ll perform along with another legendary NWA member, DJ Yella. Lil Eazy is currently starring on the WE network reality show “Growing Up Hip Hop” and just released a new album and a single. Jaurique is a local Fresnan who has been promoting concerts and events in the city for over 12 years. His goal is to continue bringing big-name artists and tours to Fresno; a market often passed over in favor of Los Angeles and the Bay Area. Jaurique is also introducing his sons to the business. His oldest son Bradley Jr. recently graduated from Fresno State with a bachelor’s in business marketing and is on his way to law school to study entertainment law. His son Julian is currently attending Fresno

State, studying finance accounting. Jaurique plans to bring his sons on board to expand the business beyond concert and event promotion to include entertainment and sports management services “I would like to continue to focus on downtown Fresno to host these concerts,” Jaurique continues, “I want to bring these shows and the money that follows with them to the communities that have always supported hiphop.” After a nearly two-year moratorium on live events due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Fresno music fans are more than eager for big-name concerts to come back to the city. Combined with the significant shift in public opinion and acceptance of cannabis since its legalization, Berner’s return to Fresno is shaping up to be Jaurique’s most successful event to date. The First Class By Don Priest | kfsrbluesdog@gmail.com

“Rising from the fertile soil of “The Valley” comes a harvest as rich in culture and variety as anything produced in the fields. Pick a genre –Country, Blues, Jazz, Rock, Classical, or any of the music representing the Valley’s cross-cultural tapestry, and you’ll find someone here who plays it, writes it, produces, or teaches it at an exceptionally high level!” So states the opening narration of the television show produced by the Valley Music Hall of Fame to celebrate “The First Class” of musical artists inducted into the hall. This first class of inductees includes Broadway Musical star Audra McDonald, who has won more Tony Awards than any other performer; Fresno State Educators Russell Howland & James Winter, who together trained an entire generation of young musicians: The King of Western Swing, Country Music Star Dave Stogner, and the man who holds the record for the most appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show, Accordion Master Dick Contino. This project has been three years in the making as the Covid-19 pandemic complicated efforts. The result is a hybrid TV/ Zoom session with different segments produced by various participants in separate locations using multiple media formats.
