ever. And not just one or two of them either. It could be our entire small business market. Have you ever thought about what the world would look like without them? It would be a drab, grey, cook-cutter world. Every city would look, feel, act, and sound the same. Small businesses help bring out an area’s identity, culture, and personality the same way a slow drawl brings out the charm in a

southern accent. They remind us of our history because many of them are multi-generational, owned, and operated by the same family for decades. They breathe life into the culture by fostering artists and opening their stages to rowdy dreamers who shape an underground scene that brings people together in a way that’s uniquely that city. They hold on to our collective character and reflect it back to visitors, inspiring them to live here, growing and adding to our beautiful, quilted image. Without small, locally owned businesses, we’d be nothing but geography, littered with Walmarts, McDonald’s, Starbucks, and Home Depots. We’d be devoid of color. We’d be utterly shapeless because we would be missing a big part of what makes up our collective selves. That’s what our world would look like without small businesses. Supporting local isn’t just a gimmick or a slogan. It really is supporting your local history, culture, and identity. Find one thing on your holiday shopping list from a small business this year. If enough of us do that, we may help ensure that more of those businesses continue to help our cities stay uniquely and unequivocally ‘us.’

THE DYING SUNS By Dave Fountinelle | dave@fresnoflyer.com

I

t has been a brutal year for the music industry, to say the least. The pandemic killed live performances across the globe. The National Independent Venue Association speculates that up to 90% of the live music venues in America may have to permanently shut their doors without significant federal assistance beyond what has already been provided. It has been conservatively estimated that as much as $9 billion in ticket sales has already been lost. As a result, musicians have been left scrambling to find alternatives to their traditional bread and butter for revenue and promotion. Even successful, well-established acts have had a tough time getting fans to cough up premium ticket prices for live-stream concerts on empty sound stages. For new, upcoming artists still struggling to build a fan base and get their feet in the door, the moratorium on live shows has been nothing short of devastating. For the guys in The Dying Suns, the Clovis-based retro-rock five-piece, the shutdown presents as much opportunity as it does obstacle. “We were only playing together for about a year when the pandemic started,” 18-year-old guitarist Max Winterburn recalls. “We were still working on developing our style and polishing our live performance. So, this was something that could either make or break us, depending on how we reacted to it.”

Instead of throwing in the towel and calling it quits, Winterburn - along with vocalist Harrison Silva Costa, bassist Zachary Sylvester, drummer Bryce Lowenthal, and keyboardist Thomas Voelz - decided to adapt and overcome. They have used the shutdown as an opportunity to write and rehearse so they can hit the stage with a vengeance when live shows return. They’re also taking some cues from other artists who have used social media to create new ways to bring fresh content to their fans. “We’re working on a YouTube series that’s just us doing random things and having fun together. We want to explore as many avenues as possible to grow our fan base and get people excited about what we’re doing.” Winterburn explains. The Dying Suns origin story is a fairly standard tale: High school friends with talent for days and rock star hair united in the common cause of saving the world through the power of rock n roll. After a year of writing and rehearsing together, The Dying Suns released their first single, “Queen Cobra.” Roughly a month after the song was uploaded to the streaming services, the pandemic shut every| FRESNOFLYER.COM |

thing down. It ended live music for the foreseeable future. “For us, it was never an option to let this be the thing that broke us as a band,” Winterburn states, matter-of-factly. “I mean, yeah, not being able to play live shows definitely makes things harder in some ways, but we just took it as an opportunity to focus on improving ourselves as much as we can. So, instead of playing shows, we’re writing, and we’re rehearsing. We’re exploring creative ways to make and maintain that connection with our fans and build our brand in the absence of live performances.” Part of their commitment to growing and improving as a band was to add a fifth member, keyboardist Thomas Voelz. According to Winterburn, Voelz was precisely what the band needed to fill in the blanks and complete their lineup. The Dying Suns’ music would best be described as part of the “retro-rock” throwback trend currently popularized by bands like Greta Van Fleet and The Struts. “70’s revival” is how Winterburn describes the bands sound. Tracks like “Queen Cobra,” “Desert Sea,” and “Round Mountain” sound like they could have been outtakes from Led Zeppelin’s early

albums. The riffs and chops on these songs have an energy and refinement rarely found on recordings from artists with decades of experience. Let alone for a group that’s only been together for 2 years and whose oldest member is only 20 years old. For Winterburn and the rest of the band, the only rule for writing music is that there are no rules. “The songs we’ve put out have that 70’s revival sound for sure, but we definitely don’t want to put any limitations on ourselves in terms of writing, image, or anything else. We just want to write the best songs we can, and always push ourselves to do better and better.” It’s hard not to be impressed with what The Dying Suns have already accomplished on their self-titled ep. Their songwriting is solid, Winterburn’s guitar riffs are catchy, and dripping with flourish and flair straight from the Jimmy Page playbook. Lowenthal’s drumming sits solidly in the pocket and carries the rhythm section like a sizzling fajita plate in a restaurant, turning heads all the way to the table. Sylvester’s bass playing provides the thick, juicy bottom end that defined the classic blues-rock sound of the ’70s. Sitting on top of that beefy, saucy musical pile of retro-rock na-

questions answered By Nadine Pourier Blumenshine npbwellnesscoach@gmail.com

o you have expertise in a job or skill that people always ask you questions about? The same thing happens to me. Here’s a couple of questions I’ve gotten recently. Lately, I’ve had a hard time resisting the salty(or sweet or fried or crunchy) food I crave. Do you have any substitutions that I can eat that won’t make me feel so let down with myself? Sure! Keep in mind that the healthiest replacements are fruit, vegetable, or whole grain-based. Also, a shorter ingredient list on any food you buy is better for you. A lot of times, we choose salty because we’re wanting lots of flavors. Think of the strong flavors you like, and put them on homemade popcorn. Choose a little olive oil with grated parmesan cheese and garlic powder. Or try the popcorn with chili pepper flakes stirred into a tiny bit of melted butter. Sweet cravings can sometimes be our brain signaling us that it needs energy. Fruits like grapes, kiwi, berries, and avocado give it a boost. Dried fruits such as apricots, raisins, and blueberries have an intense sweetness built into them. Just make sure to choose dried fruits that haven’t had sugar added to them. You can also choose a slice of whole-wheat toast with a small smear of honey or an apple or banana spread with nut butter. As we’re moving into the cooler months, our bodies seek warmth and relief from dryness. Foods fried in oils give us that. Almonds, walnuts, and sesame seeded whole-grain crackers all have healthier fats that can help with your fried food craving. Avocados, salmon, olive oil, eggs, and butter will also give you what your body craves. Make an egg in a small pat of butter and

Fuwa Fuwa means “fluffy” in Nihongo, which perfectly describes the jiggy souffle pancakes that have become a viral food trend in America and have finally arrived in Fresno with the opening of Fuwa Fuwa in the River Park shopping center. The family-owned and operated eatery specializes in creating delicious and decadent treats from the famous souffles to cakes and other japanese baked delights. The cafe also offers tea and espresso to wash down the desserts. Manager Richard Woo is excited to bring Fuwa Fuwa’s unique flavors to the Central Valley. “[these desserts] are very popular in the Bay Area and Los Angeles. This is a perfect opportunity to bring something new to Fresno.” he says. Judging from the long line of locals that has been a fixture at the location since they opened earlier this week, and their willingness to wait 30 minutes or more for one of these fluffy, jiggly delights, it’s fair to say that Fuwa Fuwa is going to be a hit here as well. Fuwa Fuwa is located in River Park, near the I-MAX theater and Yogurtland.

With three locations in Grover Beach, San Luis Obispo, and Morro Bay, Natural Healing Center has been providing medicinal and recreational cannabis products to happy and grateful customers on the Central Coast since 2018, quickly becoming that largest cannabis operator in San Luis Obispo County. Earlier this year, NHC opened its fourth location as one of two dispensaries given operating permits by the city of Lemoore. What separates NHC from the competition is their focus on providing excellent one-on-one customer service. Customers are paired up with a personal consultant to answer any questions they have, and to help them find the right products to meet their needs. NHC is more than simply a recreational cannabis shop. Providing cannabis education is at the core of NHC’s values. Informing customers about the many medical health benefits of cannabis and guiding them in their selection process to find exactly what they’re looking for is what separates NHC from an increasingly crowded market space. NHC also offers daily deals, early bird specials, and discounts for seniors, veterans, and first-time customers. They have the largest assortment of products in California. Their motto is “locally owned, centrally grown”, reflecting their commitment to featuring cannabis products from local cultivators. NHC also has a well-established track record of charitable giving, participation, and community investment that has led to a shared prosperity with the cities where they’re located. In addition to in-store shopping, NHC also offers online ordering for pick up, as well as delivery services in select areas. For more information, menu, and list of services, visit their website.

To complete the original picture, he was almost named Reginald or Rollo. 2. America’s first batch of eggnog was made in the Jamestown settlement in 1607. Its name comes from the word “grog”, meaning any drink made with rum. Non-alcoholic eggnog is popular as well. 3. ...‘Dying Suns’ cont’d from pg 3 chos is Costa’s vocal pico de gallo. With soaring high-range wails and confidence of delivery that channels Robert Plant, fist bumps Freddy Mercury, and throws an empty beer bottle at Ian Gillan’s head. To hear this level of creative maturity and polish from musicians in their late teens in a band just two years old is nothing short of remarkable. As we enter the “dark winter” of the COVID pandemic that health experts warned us about and California once again regresses into mandatory lockdowns across most of the state, the future of live audience entertainment continues to remain in limbo for the foreseeable future. In addition to the already staggering financial cost, there are also long-term impacts on performance art and audience behavior to consider as well. How many local, undiscovered, or struggling artists will be able to weather the storm and emerge with their careers still intact? When the worst of the pandemic is finally past, and the public gets the “all-clear” to start safely attending large gatherings again, will they rush out to do so? Or will apprehension about exposure and lingering concerns for personal safety continue to depress event attendance beyond any official “end of the pandemic” declaration? The challenges presented by the COVID pandemic have had an unprecedented impact on the entertainment industry. Yet, despite this, art still manages to find a way. Through the power of social media, artists are finding new ways to stay connected to their fans and remain relevant. Not only do those fans have more access than ever before to artists at the personal level, but their support has never been more essential. The best way to ensure that your local music scene isn’t entirely devastated by the pandemic lockdowns is to continue supporting your favorite local bands and artists. Whether it’s buying their merchandise, streaming their music, supporting them on other platforms, or donating to their GoFundMe or Patreon if they have one. The Dying Suns hope to prove that if you focus on writing good songs and are willing to adapt to whatever curves life sends your way, the future can still shine brightly. It’s a pretty safe bet that, once live music comes back, The Dying Suns will be packing the house wherever they play. You can listen to The Dying Suns self-titled EP on all streaming platforms. Mariachis began booking events only to lose jobs again By Jacqueline Garcie calmatters.org

J

ust as people started adapting to the new normal and mariachi musicians began booking small events, positive COVID-19 cases soared again across California. The news fell like a bucket of cold water for several mariachis from LA’s Boyle Heights area. Many received cancellations over the weekend after Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a statewide curfew for all nonessential businesses from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. in most counties. The state is also banning gatherings of 15 people or more in order to slow the spread of the virus. Aurelio Reyes has been a mariachi for 12 years and for the last six years, he has been part of a mariachi trio with his wife and daughter. He said that for a few weeks they were more comfortable since work was returning. They were hired again for small at home events. “But now people (are) canceling us and we don’t have other jobs,” said Reyes, who said he has been living off his savings plus donations for months. He said although they sign contracts with clients for events, they can’t force anyone to pay. “When we go to play, we are always cautious,” Reyes said. “We use facemasks, hand sanitizer and (we practice) social distancing.” Israel Moreno, 52, another mariachi from Boyle Heights, said he has been making calls to see if he can get any jobs with other groups playing. “I call my colleagues but no one has work,” he said in distress. “We were just rising up and they cut our wings again. We don’t know to do anything other than play music.”

| FRESNO FLYER |

Aurelio Reyes, who plays in a mariachi trio with his wife and daughter. have received cancellations as a result of the statewide curfew. Photo courtesy of Aurelio Reyes. Like Reyes, Moreno said that a few weeks ago they were already receiving more contracts but with tighter restrictions jobs are vanishing. Moreno says he is the sole breadwinner for his family, including two children. Helping each other In response, Moreno said that several mariachis are rallying together through the Organization of Independent Mariachis of California. The group has managed to get other organizations to help them with food donations each week. “We put food aside for (mariachis) who need it the most,” Moreno said. “They give us milk, eggs, vegetables, ham and that helps us a lot.” Some have also received financial help. Both Moreno and Reyes were part of the first group to receive a prepaid card for mariachis from the Community Power Collective (CPC), a nonprofit organization helping the needy. Carmina Calderon, a community organizer, said that when the pandemic began, CPC focused on collecting financial aid for street vendors who were seriously affected when street sales were temporarily banned. “But we realized that the mariachis were also in a very difficult situation, especially because many of them do not qualify for public aid,” Calderon said. The group launched an online fundraiser benefiting the musicians and also used other grants.

| FEATURED | DINING | CALENDAR | MUSIC | CLASSIFIEDS |

| FRESNOFLYER.COM |

Calderon said almost 160 mariachis signed up for financial support. A survey showed many musicians have lost about 70% of their income due to performance cancellations. Some have managed to get part-time jobs as day laborers, but most are still waiting to play again. “Many of them have problems paying their rent, others live in crowded conditions with more companions or are sleeping in their cars,” said Calderon. “Those who live alone here not only worry about paying their rent but also about sending money to their families in their countries.” The organization gave the first round of cards loaded with $400 to 80 mariachis in July. A second round aimed at the remaining batch of mariachis is expected to be given out before Christmas. Calderon said not enough funds have been raised from a GoFundMe account to support mariachis, so the cards probably will be just under $400. Jacqueline Garcia is a reporter with La Opinión. ...‘Answered’ cont’d from pg 4 serve it with some sliced avocado. Or pour a splash of olive oil into any pasta dish right before serving. Crunchy foods likely satisfy our desire to use more than one of our senses at a time. The sound, taste, and feel of crunchy can really hit the spot. Raw vegetables and fruits can give you the munching sound and feel that you want. You can add flavor by dipping carrots, celery, or jicama in salsa, a hot sauce, or any nut butter. Fruits like apple and pear are delicious dipped in plain yogurt lightly sweetened with honey. This year has been tough, and I have no motivation or energy to take care of myself. What can I do to change that? I think so many of us are in that same worn-out space. I think we even have some grief over a year that wasn’t what we anticipated. The answer has lots of parts, hopefully, all easy. First, keep paying attention to how you’re feeling, and give yourself grace for whatever it looks like. Then, recognize that you DO want to make a change; that’s your motivation engine. Next, if you’re a planner, think of the same time every day. You can do something that is just for you. It can be only 15 minutes, or a lot longer. Whatever you can fit into your day. Use the time to sit quietly, read

a chapter in a book, work out in the yard, take a walk, play with the dog, call a good friend, or plan a tasty dish you can make for yourself. Make sure it is something that feels good to you. Building a routine at the same time of day will make it easier for you to keep it up. If you aren’t a planner, take a moment every morning to decide when and what you want to do to care for yourself. These morning moments are the routine you want to build, and it will propel you to take time for care later in the day. For added incentive and accountability, include another person in all of these steps. You’ll both be more successful in the actions that you choose. Finally, make sure you give yourself credit for anything you did to care for yourself. Seeing and acknowledging our successes, no matter how large, is especially hard when we aren’t feeling like ourselves. And the positivity that goes with the acknowledgment will help keep you motivated. Where can I see more answers to questions, or send you questions? I’m glad you asked! EVENTS Blogilates. https://www.youtube.com/user/ blogilates/videos Most of these workouts are about 10 minutes or less, and based around Pilates workouts to help strengthen and tone muscle. The instructor, Cassey, guides you through the routines in the comfort of her home, sometimes with friends, but oftentimes alone. With these short, attainable workouts, and one-on-one instruction, it can feel like you have your own personal trainer right in your living room—minus the hefty price tag that usually comes along with it. Heart and Soul Fitness. https://www.youtube.com/user/KozakSportsPerform There isn’t anything wild or flashy in the production of these videos—it’s just two people working hard, encouraging you to give your best effort, and demonstrating moves you can do that don’t require a lot of floor space. Coach Kozak does the full workout while Claudia models the modifications, so regardless of your fitness level, you will always have someone to follow. Get ready to sweat! Yoga with Adriene. https://yogawithadriene. com/ Can you already twist your body into a pretzel? Great, Adriene is here for you. Can’t even touch your toes? Even better, Adriene is ready to help. She has so many videos and options that it’s almost overwhelming. Keyword: almost. Her soothing voice and relaxed approach to yoga will keep you—and her other 6 million-plus subscribers—coming back for more. Sweat with SELF. https://www.youtube.com/ playlist?list=PL7Ax6CP9_hgPjjCrA9zNH9ebuvgJ1riXd If you’re looking for some serious (free) “fitspiration,” the “Sweat with SELF” channel is where you should go. From the backdrop of their classes (the NYC skyline is often featured), to the upbeat and spandex-clad instructors, these classes give the most realistic vibe of an in-person group fitness class. You know, but without the group. These classes range from 10 to 30 minutes. However, there is a timer in the corner counting down each move, so the time flies by, as each section is broken up into segments. Most workouts don’t require anything other than your body weight, though some utilize dumbbells and kettlebells. Word to the wise: If you have neighbors living beneath you, these aren’t the videos to bust out at 6 a.m.—be kind and wait at least until 9 a.m.
