EDITOR’S NOTE Who’s This Fresno Flyer? by Lisa Talley

N

otice something different? In our last issue we unveiled a major change, and without warning. The paper you may have known as The Valley’s Nickel is now The Fresno Flyer. Fresno has seen about 3 different papers circulating the scene over the last 20-30 years, all doing just about the exact same thing. Common endearments would label them as ‘throw-away’ or even ‘rag’ papers. The contents within their pages would be filled with various advertising of local residents selling household items and small to big businesses advertising their products or services. “Just a whole lot of bunk-beds and tires,” some have said. But regardless of the label, it was a paper the people had come to know and even love, since it was where they could find some of the best deals in their area. So it begs a serious question: why the change? Over the years, with the rise of the internet and websites like Craigslist, a fall off began to occur with the paper… no one seemed to need it as much. One by one the papers would rise and soon dismantle. A new publisher would arrive to keep the ‘shopper’ paper going, determined to bring it back to its former glory but would eventually end up closing their doors after a few years time. Even though there are a fair number of readers who take great joy picking up the ‘throw-away’, it just couldn’t contend with the changing market. This was the realization soon after we opened as The Valley’s Nickel and we knew we wanted to eventually do something different. Fresno, and the whole of the San Joaquin Valley, are going through a period of rebranding. It’s a time in which the entire Central Valley is shaping its identity to that of what it truly represents, a viable center of progress and ingenuity within the state of California. The common misconception is that people look to leave the Central Valley, not migrate to it. It’s usually cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles that typically claim the title of the most sought after place to live in around these parts. But the fact of the matter is, we’re a place that’s growing exponentially and producing organizations, art of all forms and events of great creativity and talent. The Fresno Flyer is an embodiment of that. Over the last 2 years we’ve been subtely introducing changes and experimenting with different sections to not only give you, the reader, a different experience, but to see if this new style would

be successful. Lucky for us, it totally was. And it’s not as if we’re completely going to remove the ‘shopper’ aspect of what helped bring us to where we are today, we plan on keeping a healthy supply of classifieds in every issue to satisfy the community’s need to buy, sell and trade locally. Because let’s face it, Craigslist is starting to take an interesting and not so favorable turn. And calling the paper The Fresno Flyer was also not some effort to alienate any of the surrounding cities. It was about giving the paper a geographical identity. Fresno is the 5th largest city in California, which makes us a pretty big contender especially if you consider the connection between all the different towns and cities. How many of us travel to Hanford, Visalia, Madera or Oakhurst on a regular basis? Or vice versa? Fresno is the central hub of our collective communities. Even though we’ve decided to call our paper The Fresno Flyer we’re here to represent the whole of the Central Valley. It’s our goal, you see, to bring all of these amazing things in to one place. You should be able to pick up an issue, flip through our pages and instantly know the variety of cool things not only going on in the Central Valley, but those you can be a part of as well. Sort of like a TV guide for your local entertainment. We’re an eclectic mashup mirroring the surrounding environment in the most positive way. We’re not political. Or at least that’s not our overall mission, you’ve already got plenty of great newspapers who fill that need both on an independent, alternative level and on a large scale level as well. We’re here to help you stay connected to the ever growing awesome around you. We also invite anyone who’s interested in our journey to jump on board. We’re always looking for writers, artists and promoters to help round out each of our issues with the most up to date information on what’s going on in the Central Valley. This is already an exciting venture, a new turn to meet the ever changing market and we’d love to expand the team. Give us a holler if you think you’d be a great fit! If you have any questions regarding the name change or becoming a part of the team, you can call our office any time during normal business hours (M-F 10a - 5p) at 559-472-7182 or you can email me at lisa@fresnoflyer.com. Looking forward to bringing you plenty of future issues celebrating the great things happening here.

A good night’s rest includes four different sleep stages with 90-minute phases of alternating non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. To help moms everywhere reach all stages and sleep better during the hectic back-to-school season and all year long, Wright recommends following these tips and tricks:

Adopt a Sleep Routine A consistent sleep-wake schedule isn’t just good for your kids, it’s good for you, too. This supports your body’s natural circadian rhythms that occur with the day-night transition. This also supports the release of melatonin, the body’s naturally produced hormone that signals the body to sleep soundly.

Tips to Help Moms Sleep Better During Back-to-School Transitions (BPT) - Early mornings, new extracurricular activities and loads of homework - back to school is a big transition for kids. With the focus on children’s success, there’s one family member who always sacrifices her well-being to ensure days run smoothly: Mom. “She lays in bed at night planning the next day. She gets up earlier than the kids to prepare meals. She selflessly packs her schedule to meet family obligations,” says Shannon Wright, Master of Science in Nutritional Sciences and wellness expert for

Essentially, the LED lights make your

brain believe it’s day and therefore prohibit melatonin release.

Exercise Daily There is a lot of research that connects quality sleep to exercise, so even if you’re tired, try to move and groove your body every day. Walk the field perimeter at the kids’ soccer practice, join the kids on the playground or pop in that yoga DVD to start your morning out with a good stretch.

Be Proactive About Tomorrow Enjoy a smoother morning and fewer worries while you’re lying in bed by getting things done the night before. For example, make lunches, pack backpacks, shower and lay out clothes for the next day in the evening. You’ll have fewer to-do’s in the morning and you can sleep in a little later.

Take Sleep-Supportive Supplements Stress, along with other things like age, diet and lifestyle can affect our bodies’ production of melatonin. Taking a melatonin supplement can help. Try Natrol, a 100% drugfree melatonin supplement that is non-habit forming. The fast-dissolve tablets help moms fall asleep faster, stay asleep and wake up refreshed to tackle another busy day. “These tips may be simple, but they are extremely effective. Remember, with a good night’s rest it’s a whole lot easier to be Super Mom,” Wright says.

Back-to-School 101 for Kids With Allergies and Asthma

(BPT) - There are lots of things kids get excited about when they go back to school. From brand new lunch boxes loaded with pudding cups, to shiny 64-packs of crayons and catching up with friends they haven’t seen for awhile, anticipation is in the air. But if you’re a parent of one of the 28 million children who suffer from allergies, or one of the 7.1 million children who have asthma, sending kids back to school can cause anxious moments. “Many parents look forward to their child returning to the classroom,” said allergist Janna Tuck, spokesperson for the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI). “But for parents of children with allergies or asthma, school raises questions about conditions that can’t be controlled or monitored. They want to make sure their child is safe, has adequate resources and that systems are in place if they have an asthma or allergy attack.” By following these suggestions from the ACAAI, you can help ensure your child has a safe, fun start to the school year. Know their triggers. Students with pets at home can bring pet dander into school. Other common allergens such as pollen and dust will definitely find their way into the class-

room. If your child suddenly develops a runny nose, has difficulty breathing or comes home with a rash, it may be related to classroom triggers. Check with your allergist if previously unseen symptoms occur or if existing symptoms worsen. Make an appointment with an allergist. If you think your child might have allergies or asthma, making an appointment with a board-certified allergist is the first step to accurately developing a game plan. An allergist can determine what’s causing your child’s symptoms, as well as provide guidance to help both of you cope with allergies and asthma. Through prescribing medication and creating treatment plans, your allergist can provide the care that leads to fewer school absences. Talk to your child about lunch time. Younger children especially might be excited to share food with friends or try new things on the lunch menu. If your child has a food allergy, it’s important they know why they cannot eat certain things or share food. If your child is prescribed an epinephrine auto injector, make sure the staff is trained in how to use it, and knows where your child’s is located. Meet with the school. This is one of the biggest steps in preparing for the new school year. Your child’s teachers, coaches,

| FRESNO FLYER |

school nurse and principal should all be informed about your child’s asthma and/or allergies, and what medications they carry with them. All 50 states have laws allowing children to carry their needed medication. If your child is old enough, teach them how to use their epinephrine auto injector or rescue inhaler. Make sure they understand warning signs and symptoms, what precautions to take and who to talk to if a reaction develops. Talk with your child’s friends and other parents. Communication is always a good policy when it comes to managing your child’s allergies and asthma. Talking to your

child’s friends, or asking their parents to talk to their children about asthma and allergies, adds another layer of support. This is important for social reasons, as the more your child’s friends and classmates understand allergies and asthma, the less chance your child will feel isolated. It can be a challenge to keep your kids free from allergy and asthma triggers. To help get you started on developing an action plan and find an allergist in your area check out the ACAAI allergist locator tool. The ACAAI website has lots of resources to ensure your child has a safe and enjoyable school year.

* Extends cell life: What’s the secret to aging well? While there are many factors that can influence aging, vitamin E can extend cell life to keep skin in great shape for years. * Repairs damaged cells: With vitamin E oil, you can also repair damaged cells. Specifically, vitamin E can be used to treat sunburns and scars. * May reduce risk of heart disease and cancer: There’s still much to be discovered about vitamin E. Currently, doctors and scientists are testing whether vitamin E can reduce the risk of serious health conditions, like heart disease and cancer. * Reduces risk of cataracts and other eye issues: Maintain eye health and prevent serious eye diseases by getting your daily intake of vitamin E.

Why You Need Vitamin E - and how to get your daily dose

(BPT) - You get your fill of vitamins C and D by eating oranges and soaking in a little sun each day, which is good for your body and mind. Small habits like these can have a big impact on your overall health and help you feel your best each day. However, vitamins C and D aren’t the only vitamins your body needs to thrive. Take vitamin E, for example. This overlooked vitamin is essential to our well-being and yet, many people don’t know anything about it. Let’s take a moment to learn about the super vitamin, and what you can do to get your daily intake. What are the benefits of vitamin E? Vitamin E, like vitamin C, is an antioxidant and therefore helps improve immunity levels. Here are the possible benefits of vitamin E, and how it can specifically enhance your health. * Fights summer colds: Winter isn’t the only time you can catch a cold. In the summer, vitamin E can boost your immunity to prevent sickness during the warmer months.

* May slow down cognitive decline: Studies have found that a higher intake of vitamin E in older individuals can reduce cognitive decline and can even slow down the progression of diseases like Alzheimer’s.

How can I get more vitamin E in my diet? The US Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for vitamin E in individuals 14 years and older is 15 mg. Instead of taking supplements to get the recommended daily dosage, however, save your money and add vitamin-rich foods to your diet. “The simplest way to increase your vitamin E intake is to follow a healthy diet that focuses on eating vitamin E-rich vegetables, fruits, healthy fats and lean forms of protein,” says Lyssie Lakatos, a registered dietitian. Lakatos lists these five foods as examples of what you can include in your vitamin E-rich meal plan. * Pistachios: A protein-packed snack, pistachios are also a rich source of vitamin E you can take on-the-go. * Spinach: When preparing salads, toss some

| FRESNOFLYER.COM |

spinach into the mix. This dark, leafy green is also high in calcium. * Eggs: Eggland’s Best eggs contain 10 times more vitamin E than ordinary eggs, which is equal to 25 percent of the recommended daily intake for vitamin E. They are also packed with omega-3s, vitamins like B12 and D, and contain 25 percent less saturated fat than other eggs. * Avocados: Add an avocado to your salad or make guacamole to get the benefits of this healthy, vitamin E-rich fruit. * Olives: Whether you like to eat olives as a snack or use olive oil when cooking, you can expect to increase your vitamin E intake by including olives in your diet. Making Vitamin-E focused meals is simple and delicious. Here’s one recipe you can try at home today!

EBLT Bowl Ingredients: *2 Eggland’s Best Hard-Cooked Peeled Eggs *1 bag spinach *¬Ω cup cherry tomatoes, halved *6 pieces of turkey bacon, cooked and chopped *1 avocado, sliced *salt & pepper to taste *¬Ω cup whole grain croutons (optional) Dressing: *1/4 cup light mayonnaise (or plain Greek yogurt) *1 tablespoon water *1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar *Salt and pepper to taste Preparation: *In a large bowl combine spinach, onion and tomatoes. *Place all of your salad dressing ingredients together in a jar and shake until completely combined. *Top spinach mixture with two hard-cooked eggs per bowl, sliced avocado and croutons. *Drizzle with dressing and enjoy! Deftones Returns to Fresno! By Anglia Walpool

D

eftones, the alternative metal band from Sacramento, CA will be performing live in Fresno on Tuesday, August, 23 at the Rotary Amphitheater located at 7775 N. Friant Rd. Deftones first made a name for themselves starting with their smash hit “My Own Summer” off their 1997 album Around the Fur. The driving post-grunge melodies were a perfect blend with singer Chino Moreno’s brooding voice and now iconic screams. It quickly resonated with the next generation of listeners and they soon skyrocketed to become one of the most recognized bands of the alternative rock genre. Currently, Deftones currently has the #2 album in the country with their recent release Gore. The eighth studio album sold worldwide, Gore elevated 71,000 copies and sold 69,000 in pure album sales. The album marks the first release in four years from the band since 2012’s Koi No Yokan. Gore also gives them their best sales week since 2006’s Saturday Night Wrist with 76,000 sold, according to Billboard. The legendary amphitheater at Woodward Park, is a 300-acre facility. It has introduced nationally renowned stars of contemporary jazz such as Boney James, Al Jarreau, Michale Lington, The Philippe Saisse Trio, The Jeanette Harris Band and the Pete Escovedo Orchestra. In addition, the amphitheater has also hosted numerous country music stars and even stand-up comedian and actor Paul Rodriguez. Fans in the Central Valley are eagerly waiting for this event. The generation that discovered them is still the generation that loves them and they could not be more excited about the return of Deftones to a local Fresno stage. The reputable amphitheater has plenty of parking reserved for Deftones patrons. Linda Johnson, a local Clovis fan stated,

“The excitement and energy of the concert will be intoxicating”, Many Deftones admirers will be there for the same reason and being surrounded by so many others who share the same interest is going ot be “fantastically overwhelming!” Some Deftones fans, still remember the August 7, 2010 visit to Fresno when they played at the Rotary Amphitheater and Vina Robles Amphitheatre in Paso Robles in October 10, 2015. When asking a group of four alternative metal fans how they all feel about Deftones, they all spontaneously shouted “that band totally rocks!” For more information about Deftones visit www. deftonesworld.com The new album is available on Spotify, which boasts a free desktop app and web player for its members. A quick listen proves that Deftones is still true to their unique style that hasn’t let go of the agressive angst so palpable in some of their songs. The slick groove of their sound is sure to impress new and old fans alike. To purchase tickets for the show go to Deftones.com and click on the tickets link or go to Ticketweb.com. Hope to see you there!
