THE RAW BEAUTY OF

& M.E.C.C.A.'s Growing Voice in Fresno By Lisa Talley

ines are formally described as selfpublished booklets with a small circulation, offered to the public for free, or at least for very cheap, to read. But a better description would be something like, “ [Zines are] a reflection of our community’s voice. It is not created with the intention to capitalize, it is created with the intention to allow true forms of non-commercialized expression and creativity.” As said by the publisher of local zine, M.M.E.C.C.A., herself Kayla Moon. These booklets, these magazines… they’re created out of a drive, a need or a passion to say something. They’re not just created by writers, but by artists across the entire spectrum allowing for myriad forms of expression and perspectives. And because they have no interest in money or capital gains, zines are an all out honest reflection of the cities they’re born in, and a reflection of all the different cultures living there. They’re filled with poetry, angry outbursts, random thoughts, doodles, complex artistry, hard hitting journalism and everything inbetween. Zines become this wonderfully uncensored, gritty, and undeniably

unapologetic recording of a city’s current state; its policies, its history, its ugliness and its beauty. Earlier this year, Fresno got itself a new resident zine titled M.M.E.C.C.A., born out of the need “to fuel the fire,” says Moon. “We see groups of people that have never once been uplifted or valued for who they are. Fresno specifically breeds talent and then exports the artists to other cities and places in the world. There is no equivalent exchange for our work. This is life experience, these supplies cost money, this is our blood. We manifest dreams and are given crumbs. The intention of MMECCA is to reward and highlight introspective, uplifting, insightful people.” Fresno has long been noted as being afflicted with the ‘Brain Drain’ of having its gifted children leave once their nurturing here is finished, other cities reaping the benefits of our Central Valley cultivated talent. But what about those who’ve trained them, worked along side them and chose to stay? The ones who provided encouragement and inspiration as these artists found their voice? M.M.E.C.C.A. is here to celebrate those individuals and the work they do. “[It] stands for Media, Music, Education, Culture, Community and Art. We represent creativity and knowledge through forms of new age technologies and old school formats. Print represents a unique outreach, a physical copy in hand makes what we are trying to represent more tangible, creating a memorable experience,” provides Moon about her project. Holding a zine is like holding a piece of your city, the real one, the one you experience everyday because it’s filled with the words of the people who are shaping its future and who have also survived its past. New issues come out, but you can hang on to the old ones, creating a library chronicling an age or an era of specific voices. And each one will be as raw and uncensored as the last.

The cover of M.M.E.C.C.A.’s current issue, featuring the artwork of local artist A.S. Angelo M.M.E.C.C.A. is very specific about the content they feature. “It has to hit the heart, it must be revolutionary. Futuristic thinking, shocks of awakening, sharing truths. These are all vital aspects of the entire package,” says Moon. Writing for M.M.E.C.C.A. is open to the public, but comes with an expectation of standards. Bring your passion, your drive to help improve the world, and you’ll fit right in. Currently, M.M.E.C.C.A. houses its own staff of writers, a graphic designer and a multitude of featured collaborators to produce each monthly zine, but they’re open to work with just about anyone. If you’re working on a project, hosting an event, looking to express “your deepest self ”, or wanting to dream the world in to a better place they want to hear from you. Visit their website at www.FutureOfMinds. com or emailing Kayla Moon herself at FutureOfMinds@gmail.com. You can find copies of M.M.E.C.C.A. at Dynamite Vinyl, Mia

Cuppa’s Open Mic in the Tower District or during downtown’s Art Hop. The issues are limited in print so you’ll have to keep an eye out for the release dates in order to get a copy before they’re all gone. They do put each of their issues on their website so you’ll also be able to look at their library as well. Zines are a powerful form of expression, and they connect communities in a completely unique way, unlike any other forms of mass communication. They paint a picture of what it’s like inside someone else’s brain, seeing the world through their eyes. It’s a chance at meeting someone or a group of people who make up your city’s very DNA that you may have never met otherwise. “We are about local and global intersectionality. Our home base is Fresno, CA where we get to shine a light on a forgotten city and highlight the dreamers and doers of our town while connecting with people around the world.” - Kayla Moon

A Sky Full of Stars By Michelle Swift
T
he Central Valley may not be an obvious place to find serene moments of tranquil beauty, but you just have to know where to look. Three of my close lady friends and I found this and more on a recent day trip up to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. We were drawn to the parks by a Facebook event promoting the Dark Sky Festival—an event designed to educate visitors about the importance of light pollution, and the nationally recognized “Dark Skies” found in the parks. The true lure of the event was the promise of constellation tours, telescope viewings, astronaut speakers, and the incredible beauty of the natural spaces the parks provide. Being a group of star gazing enthusiasts, we had been planning the trip for months. The four of us had all been to the parks before, so we decided that we would skip the most popular tourist destinations that we had all seen, such as Grant Grove or the Crystal Cave. We enjoyed a day of meandering about the parks; knowing that our eventual destination would be the “Star Party” at Wuksachi Lodge. The majority of our time during the daylight hours was spent in a picturesque meadow just off the General’s Highway. We shared quiet moments of tranquility—with
no urgency of time or obligation—just four good friends with an appreciation for all things natural. Dusk was approaching as we made our way to the lodge. We arrived early to give ourselves time to look around, and after a bit of exploring via wooden bridges spanning fern lined gullies, we came to the clearing in which the Star Party would be. This three day festival was intentionally and perfectly timed with, what some would say, is the best meteor shower of the year: the Perseid Meteor shower. Every August, the earth’s orbit passes through the trail of a comet named Tuttle, and the result is a magnificent display of burning debris as it enters our atmosphere. Even though our group of gals are self-proclaimed star enthusiast, we had never been to a “Star Party” before, and were unsure of what to expect. There was still a touch of light in the sky as we approached the line of telescopes in an impressive array of sizes, but we weren’t sure if we were allowed to invite ourselves to look through the viewfinders. We overheard a gentleman telling someone that his telescope was homemade, and joined the conversation. It quickly became obvious that this group of star enthusiasts were not only in-

Spring Cleaning in the Fall
I
By Mary Bell
know it’s not really spring, and in all honesty I don’t enjoy cleaning much. But sometimes you just have to clean out the old and make room for the new. Let me explain what I’m talking about. You are probably expecting me to talk about how essential oils can help you clean your bathrooms and kitchen. Surprise! Today I want to talk about cleaning out the visual garbage in your life. Let’s talk about ways that you can change what your eyes see. Creating beauty and purging the ugliness from your vision can have a seriously wonderful impact on your outlook on life. Take a moment to give serious thought about just how much time you spend each day using electronic devises. How much time do you spend on social media? How much time do you spend surfing the web? Is your TV turned on all day long? What electronic games do you play on your phone, ipad, or computer? (Yes, some people still have desktop computers.) You might think that your attention is focused while doing these things. Even so, most electronic devises are also programmed and designed to expose you to multiple advertisements every time you log on. You can select the types of ads you get by what types of searches you do online. For example, your niece is having a birthday so you search for kid’s games. The rest of the week you will get advertisements for toys. Another example might be that
you need parts for your car. The rest of the week your ads will target car-related products. So if you surf on things that make you unhappy, you will be looking at it all week. Your eyes and attitude would be so much happier if you started each week with a search for things that make you happy. Personally, I search for the best beaches in the world. Then I can look at beach pictures all week long. Another way you can impact what your eyes have to see each week is to clean out your list of friends and/ or followers on social media. Most of us have at least one of those friends – the friend who posts every day about how awful it is that their cup is half empty. You can delete those friends or simply set them to no longer display on your news feeds. Remove the negative from your sight – literally. And of course, there is the TV. Just a friendly reminder – all televisions and radios have “off” buttons or power buttons. You do not have to listen to everything that is broadcast. All those shows and opinions that make your blood boil – simply turn them off. If you need help with spring cleaning this fall, give me a call at 559400-1352. I’d be happy to help you replace your visuals with happy and healthy images. You can also visit my website at www.PermissionCST.com for more information about myself and the different services I provide regarding oils and CranioSacral Therapy etc.

mention, watermelon is lip-smacking, finger-licking delicious. For all of you about to harp on how much natural sugar watermelon has, wait just a second. Somer says this is largely a myth, and that although watermelon may have a high glycemic index score, it has very few calories. “Watermelon just fills you up without filling you out,” Somer says. “The nice thing about water melon is that it’s chin-dribbling juicy and so versatile. You can eat it straight from the melon, blend it into a beverage, make popsicles out of it, make sweet salsas, grill it, put it in sandwiches, etc.” Watermelon is often mistaken for a summer treat, but it’s available all year round. It’s also surprisingly portable once chopped up and put in baggies or Tupperware. (NewsUSA) - The war for healthy school lunches wages on, but parents serious about the childhood nutrition have options. “With childhood obesity on the rise and kids eating worse today than they did 20 years ago, it is so important for parents to take their children’s diets seriously, “ says Elizabeth Somer, registered dietician, nutrients and author of “Eat Your Way to Happiness.” But, as many busy moms and dads know firsthand, it’s not easy to pack a quality lunch at 6 a.m., especially if your kid is likely to opt for a slice of cafeteria pizza regardless. Don’t worry - the war is not
lost. It’s entirely possible to get children to eat nutritious lunches, especially if you know your way around fruits and veggies. According to Somer, watermelon should be a kitchen staple. “Watermelon contains lycopene. Lycopene is an antioxidant, and it is the pigment that gives watermelon its red color,” says Somer. “Watermelon is free of cholesterol, fat and sodium. You can’t get much better than that.” The juicy fruit, often dubbed a multi-vitamin unto itself, has vitamins A, B6 (6 percent), C, potassium (8 percent) and fiber (4 percent). It’s also great for staying hydrated, a way for picky kids to eat their water. Not to
