A friend recently told me that sharing our personal stories allows us, as human beings, to approach complex issues with more compassion. It’s how we find our empathy. And with empathy, we can make space for things we may disagree with. It’s how things begin to change, and it’s also how we better understand ourselves.

The ‘power of story’ has been ringing in my ears lately. As a media profes sional, it’s easy for me to see how sharing stories helps to move the cultural needle forward and foster a greater understanding of societal dif ferences. However, I rarely think about the power of the personal story, the one be hind every person - not the biography of some monumentally influential person in history, but yours, or even mine.

EDITOR’S NOTE

Social media often gets a lot of flak for being self-indulgent echo chambers notorious for enticing us to waste time and energy. But it has al lowed us to connect with each other in ways we’ve never been able to before - and to stay connected. We talk about our daily lives, that new restaurant we finally went out of our way to try … and to write letters to those we’ve lost but whose ac counts we can never bring ourselves to close. We do these things because we have an inexplicable need to share - perhaps, hoping that someone is listening. And whether you know it or not, some one is listening. But are you? We have incredibly sophisticated tools for communication but somehow re main profoundly divided. While this need to share our individual stories is important, genuinely listening to the stories of others is how we build bridg es. Without the second half of the equa tion, we’re all simply existing in the same space, endlessly trying to talk louder than the next person. The only thing we accomplish thenis missing the point. By telling our stories, we open a door, and by listening, we walk through it. As a kid, I never really asked many questions about my mom’s upbringing in the Philippines - and she never thought it important to mention it on her own. We didn’t always see eye-to-eye, so we didn’t have a close relationship for a long time. But, one day, I started asking, and she started telling. It was like I unlocked a secret door to some beautifully complex treasure. The more stories she told, the more detailed and col orful my picture became - the picture of people I loved and the one of myself I spent so many years trying to paint alone. I am now obsessed with hearing her stories, and I want to record them all so that I can listen to them over and over again because I know one day she will no longer be here to tell them. So, keep sharing your stories because you never know how they might impact those who hear them. But at the same time, listen be cause you never know how someone else’s story might impact you.

Flame It makes a tasty drive-in burger. I didn’t try the other items on their menu, but I would wager they are as good as you’d find in any other good-quality drive-in burger places around Fresno. If you live close to Flame It, and it’s not already in your reg ular burger rotation, then it should be. Is it worth making a special trip across town for? Probably not.Final Score: 3.2/5 Colorado Grill

Namely, they offer a vast menu of burgers, sandwiches, salads, sides, and desserts. Ev erything from chicken sandwiches to fried burritos and sundaes to salads. But I’m here for the burgers, and Flame It plays the classic hits in that department. Their burger menu consists of their regular “Flame It” burger - a cheeseburger, and a bacon cheeseburger, in single and double-patty variations. However, customers can add as many extra patties and slices of cheese as they want, for an addition al charge, of course. They also offer a veggie burger option, you know, for all the vege tarians out there who love going to flamebroiled burger places to get their vegetables. (Sarcasm: no additional charge). My burger arrived in the stan dard red-checkered cardboard basket with red-checkered paper underneath. Burger neatly tucked into its diaper, resting on a pile of well-seasoned crinkle-cut fries. There’s a reason this is the standard presentation for drive-in burger places because this is what one expects when they come to a place like this. Everything about my order was drive-in standard, which is a bit of a double-edged sword. On the one hand, I already know what it will taste like as soon as I see it. On the other hand, I already know what it will taste like as soon as I see it. All a place like Flame It has to do is make a burger and fries that taste just like one would expect drivein burgers and fries in red checkered baskets to taste like, and they’ve done enough to be worth visiting if you happen to live nearby. However, they really have to be doing some thing pretty special if they want me to drive past other drive-in places that are closer to me and go to their place instead.

THEFORQUESTTHEBEST: BURGER (pt 1)

4145 N Chestnut Diagonal, Fresno (559) Facebook:www.flameitburgers.com346-1797FlameitBurgerIG:Flameit_burgers Flame It Burgers does what many drivein-style burger places do around the valley.

Few things in life bring me more joy than a good burg er. There’s just something about a juicy, well-seasoned beef patty (or 2 or 3) and gooey, melted cheese that just speaks to me on a spiritual level. Add to that a vari ety of additional toppings and condiments ranging from the standard crisp veggies and ketchup/mustard/mayo to everything from bacon, chili, mac n cheese, or even a fried egg, all on a soft, toasted bun. And then there are all the messy, drippy sauces… The possibilities are endless. And I’m here for ALL OF THEM!BeforeI even accepted the chal lenge to find and rate the best burgers in Fresno, I knew there was no way I would be able to do this subject justice in a single article. Fresno has hundreds of burger plac es, and dozens of them are worthy of being included in any conversation about the best burger in the city. And I, your humble re porter, am but one man. Flesh and bone. I can only visit so many places and eat so many delicious burgers at one time. So consider this merely the first course. A toe in the proverbial water of burg er excellence. The tip of the iceberg lettuce! The single step that begins my journey of a thousand bites. For it is a journey that I will see to its end, no matter how long it takes. I owe you no less, loyal readers and fellow burger lovers. Now, for consistency, my preferred order is the bacon double cheeseburger whenever it is offered. In my opinion, this is the perfect burger to gauge the quality of any burger establishment. Double patties allow one to taste the beef’s quality and how well it’s cooked. The cheese layers must be melty, gooey, and rich - walking the line between decadent and “I may need heart surgery af ter this.” As for the bacon, listen, if they can’t cook a couple strips of bacon, then they have no busi ness making burgers. It’s really that simple. There’s a sweet sci ence to putting bacon on a burger. Thick patties require thick-cut bacon, while thinner patties should have thinner, crispier strips of bacon. It’s all about getting that perfect balance of flavor, after all. Top pings and condiments vary by establishment, and all good burger places seem to have their own unique sauces and way of preparing their veggies. Some places shred their let tuce, and some use whole leaves. Some plac es get fancy with romaine, arugula, or mixed greens. Some places dice onions, some slice them, and some even grill them. Some fancy places even make their own pickles. As far as these “standard” burger toppings go, my only hard and fast rule is no tomatoes on my burger, please. Sorry, tomato Stans, I’m not an ally. For sides, my go-to is french fries. If they offer a fancy take on basic fries, I will most likely give them a try - I can’t help it; your boy is mad extra about his side carbs. You wanna slap cheese, chili, some crazy sauce, deep-fried crickets, or weapons-grade plutonium on those taters? Get crazy. It’s 2022; birds aren’t even real. That about covers my judging cri teria. Onward to grill-halla!

In IG: triangle_burger I mentioned earlier that the traditional drivein style burger place is popular in Fresno and all over the Central Valley. Apparently, a lot of other people can’t get enough of those lit tle fried burritos, either! But you would be hard-pressed to find anyone doing retro-style drive-in burgers better than Triangle Drive In. Named after the triangle-shaped diner on the triangle-shaped lot at its orig inal Belmont Ave location, Triangle Drive In was voted “Best Hamburger in Fresno” in 2018 by the California Restaurant Asso ciation. Things have really taken off for the local favorite since then. From their humble Belmont Ave origins, Triangle Drive In has expanded to three more locations in Fresno, one in Clovis, and their newest in the city of Tulare.

Triangle Drive In’s bacon double cheeseburger is a master class on how drivein burgers should be done. I could smell the char-grilling burgers cooking when I pulled up; they are smokey, juicy masterpieces. Every burger has just the right amount of cheese, expertly cooked bacon, fresh veggies, special sauce, and pickles on a soft, toasted bun. But what really makes Triangle Drive In stand out is that burger patty. No other drive-in place comes close to the flavor of a Triangle burger. They’re like the best back yard cookout burgers you ever had, without all the mosquitos.Triangle’s sides are fantastic, but their crinkle-cut fries are my personal favor ite. Crispy, salty, and perfectly fried, they’re great with ketchup or ranch, or you can do the pro move and let the sauce from your burger drip all over them. Also, although milkshakes are not included in these ratings, it is worth men tioning that the hot fudge milkshake at Tri angle might qualify as an emotional support dessert. It is absolutely transcendent.

Everyone plays so well together; it’s truly a next-levelColoradoburger. Grill also serves steak fries with their burgers, which in my opin ion, are a hugely underrated cut of fry when they’re cooked just right. A proper steak fry should be crispy on the outside, light and fluffy on the inside, and seasoned liberally. Colorado Grill cooks a proper steak fry.  Colorado Grill isn’t just worth driving across town for - though with 3 lo cations, you won’t have to - it’s worth driv ing from out of town for. It’s also worth mentioning that besides having fantastic food, the staff at Colorado Grill are always friendly and welcoming. It’s one of those places that’s always filled with regular customers - enough said. Final Score: 4.5/5

The guys behind the popular Angry Chickz Nashville hot chicken chain have thrown their hat into the burger ring, answering a question that has probably crossed the minds of many Californians over the years: “What if we made a burger place like In n Out, only way better in every single way?” Yeah, I know, that’s a bold state ment. But, it’s not one I make lightly, either. The first thing you need to know about Flip pin’ Daves is that they specialize in making smash burgers. For those unfamiliar with the term, smash burgers start off as balls of ground beef placed on a hot flat top and then smashed incredibly thin. The burgers are crushed either with a wide metal spatula or a weighted, flat-bottomed tool designed specifically for this purpose. Pressing the burger flat like this creates what’s known as the Maillard reaction - when sugars and the amino acids in protein react to extreme heat to create an intensely flavorful “crust” on the meat and an unmistakable aroma. In burger making, this results in a thin yet highly juicy and flavorful patty, with a crisp, delicious “lattice” of browned patty around the edge. I had to make a slight adjustment to my standard order for Colorado Grill. While their double big burger with bacon is an absolutely worthy contender in its own right, it feels sacrilegious to order anything less than a bacon boulder with cheese for a competitive review. Where else will you find a burger almost as big as your head? There’s a double version as well, but I have to think about my cholesterol at my age. That double boulder is a young man’s game. Years ago, a buddy of mine ate a 4-patty quad boulder with cheese, bacon, and chili. He said he could communicate with cows telepathically for 6 months afterward. True story. There’s a reason why Colorado Grill has won numerous “Best Burger in Fresno” awards over the years and why it’s been a lo cal favorite since it opened in 1998. Every thing about this burger screams quality. The 1/2lb patty is cooked to juicy perfection and wonderfully seasoned. The shredded lettuce and diced onions are fresh and not over served. The dressings are the supporting cast, and the burger is the star. The bacon is cut thick enough to stand up to the hefty patty.

By I. smiley G. Calderón | smileygcalderon@gmail.com opinion In this Fresno Flyer summer guns series, we’ve discussed the complicated American firearm issue from different viewpoints. In July, we focused on illegal guns like ‘ghost guns’ and semiautomatic weapons. First, let’s clarify: of course, semiautomatic weapons are not illegal in our country, but maybe that’s the problem. Mass shooters are often legal gun owners, having legally purchased guns and ammunition from lawful gun stores. But le gality is not the issue right now—availability is. In some states, it is incredibly easy to pur chase and own these weapons of mass destruc tion. However, we can all agree that certain people should not be able to own these kinds of weapons.Maybe no one should. The bottom line is that access to these weapons needs to be curtailed—for our country’s sake. The same thing goes for ‘ghost guns,’ too. As we discussed in July, these are guns that buyers make themselves at home with a gun kit purchased online. With just some minor assembly, these gun kit owners become de facto gunsmiths as they’ve con structed new untraceable guns—with no seri al numbers and no background checks. Any one could buy these gun kits and fly under the radar of accountability. They have become a severe problem. Those who cannot legally purchase or own guns, like felons, have loved this gun loophole because they can evade the law—until very recently. Thankfully, just days ago, in late August, President Biden’s pro posed gun regulations from April regarding these ghost guns went into effect. Now, just like California and other states which already require ghost gun buyers to register their new guns - the Feds have made it official that they’ll treat ghost guns the same as tradition al firearms. The frames and receivers of ghost guns—the critical components of the ghost gun kits—must now be issued serial numbers. And buyers must undergo and pass federal background checks before purchasing such kits. Loophole closed. This is a crucial move by the Biden administration in this war against gun vio lence. Attorney General Merrick Garland recently said about the new ghost gun rules: “These guns have often been sold as buildyour-own kits that contain all or almost all of the parts needed to quickly build an un marked g un. And anyone could sell or buy these guns with out a b ackground check—That changes today. This rule will make it harder for criminals and other prohibited persons to obtain untraceable guns… It will help to en sure that law enforcement officers can retrieve the information they need to solve crimes. And it will help reduce the number of un traceable firearms flooding our communities.” In August, we focused on the new Gun Safety Bill that Congress passed and President Biden signed into law at the begin ning of summer.Weacknowledged that guns don’t kill people all by themselves—people need access to them first. This is why Congress needed to address the longstanding ‘boyfriend loophole’ of gun ownership. So now, if you are a domestic abuser, you don’t have to be mar ried to or live with your victim to have your gun ownership rights revoked. This simple ad justment in the law took decades for Congress to agree on and pass, but it will still save many lives.

Let’s face it: guns make it easy to kill people.

They are the ones killing us

on pg 6...

And easy access to guns makes it easy to kill people. If we didn’t have access to guns as we do, fewer people would be mur dered. And, not because there would be less hate in the nation, of course, but because it would just take too much damn energy and skill to kill more than one person at a time, to be honest. People are lazy, and guns make murdering a breeze— like playing a video game or going on a hunt. But unfortunately, even those we’ve entrusted with guns, like law enforcement, show us every day just how easy, irresponsible, and deadly gun use can be. About 1,000 people are killed each year by police in America. Some would say that police are trigger-happy. Of course, some officer-relat ed casualties are warranted. Still, many don’t seem to be—or at least are very questionable.

Take, for example, the Fresno PD shooting of 16-year-old Isiah Murrietta-Golding on April 15, 2017. Isiah, unarmed, was running away from police, jumped over an iron fence, and ran about eight steps before he was shot in the back of the head by one of the chasing officers through the fence. A neighborhood camera captured the execution. One of the officers on the scene told Sgt. Ray Villalvaz, “Good shot.” Before the video emerged, Officer Villalvaz reported that he “feared for his life” when he shot Isiah. Fresno PD backed him up and said the shot was “justified” and “with in department policy.” Yet, fast forward four years to 2021, and the City of Fresno pays Isiah’s family the most significant legal set tlement in Fresno City history: $4.9 million. One of the attorneys representing the family said: “This tragic shooting of a child was total ly unnecessary and sickening to anyone who saw the video. The city of Fresno did the right thing by paying Isaiah’s parents….” But un fortunately, no amount of money could ever bring IsiahHback.owever, imagine if there was no video. This tragedy would have simply been “justified” and “case closed.” So, even the ‘good guys’ can do bad things withAmericanguns. political and policy re searcher Dr. James Zogby says our gun ob session is a cultural disease. He sees it like this: “From cradle to grave, Americans are fed a steady diet of guns and violence. From cartoons, westerns, or cop shows to video games… ‘bullet and blood fests,’ guns, shoot ing, and killing are ingrained into America’s ‘deep culture.’ Like homemade apple pie, guns have become part of what America is as a na tion.” Guns have caused many problems for people and have gotten many in trouble with the law, too. Take, for example, Isiah’s mom, Christina Lopez. Just months after she received her huge settlement, she was arrested last October for 22 charges, including gang and conspiracy counts related to gun traffick ing. Allegedly, she spent thousands of dollars of her settlement on guns which she provid ed to her teenage son and other gang mem bers for criminal activity, including multiple murder plots. This story was shocking, but it represents the complex issues surrounding not only the use of legal guns, but also the world of illegal guns. Nevertheless, what happened to Isiah was horrible, and his mother’s crimes do not take away from his unjustified killing And here we are, on the brink of a new season as autumn approaches and we put summer to rest. Transition is our constant companion. How we observe the world through our experiences and per spectives will make all the difference in the result of the transition. The landscape around us is constantly changing, and depending on what we see and how we choose to interact with it determines the outcome. In our young lives, we can re call the sweetness of the ordinary daily routines of childhood - the freedom of innocence, playful frolicking, having our basic needs met … the world is safe and good. Then our physical bodies changed; we experienced young adulthood, a brandnew chapter in our lives. As our life phases evolved, we matured into adults, and time moved swiftly. As adults, we learn to bal ance work life, academic and social - and to cope with the physical and emotional changes we encounter. Such changes led us to wonderful blessings and some moments that were undoubtedly hectic and sad. Like never before, those moments challenged us with loss and grief, and we learned that suf fering is also part of our time on earth. We began to understand quickly that life ex periences included those which can bring us to our knees. But, by trial and error, we developed skills that have helped us along the way, and we learned that there is no failure, only stepping stones to do better as we move onward. Missed opportunities become new chapters charting us off in different directions, and we realize that the Universe often leads us to something ex traordinary - hopefully, to our destination, to our realized goals.

When I tell you that I bit into my bacon double cheeseburger and couldn’t speak intelligibly for a minute and 43 sec onds… Flippin’ Daves literally took the iconic In n Out menu and blew it out of the water. My burger was basically a double-dou ble, only with BACON. (I don’t know what your problem is with bacon, In n Out, but it will forever be my biggest pet peeve with you dudes). The smash burger patties dripped with juiciness and an intensely savory beef flavor. With each bite, a different element of the burger stood out, from the patties to the cheese, the fresh veggies, the tangy pickles, and that outstanding thick-cut bacon. (Se riously, it’s almost criminal that you don’t have bacon as an option for your burgers, In n Out). By the time I reached my last bite, I was legitimately sad. Sure, I was absolutely stuffed, and one more bite probably would have had me needing to be rolled off to the juicing room like Violet Beauregarde, but it was just soAsgood!for the fries, let me tell you, those suckers were fantastic. Coated in a crispy, well-seasoned batter, they’re delicious just as they are, with a side of Dave’s sauce to dip them in. But you already know I’m all about those super extra-loaded fry options, so when I saw “Flippin Fries” on the menu, I had to try them. These are the Flippin’ Daves version of animal-style fries, except their sauce is better, their cheese is meltier and gooier, and their fries are out of this world. Even the grilled onions tasted better. The sea soned breading on the fries with the grilled onions tasted like onion rings. I don’t know what kind of warlock magic these dudes are working with in that kitchen, but I was sure glad I got there just after they opened. When I left, the place was packed, and people were starting to line up outside. Definitely lives up to the hype.Final Score: 4.7/5 So, there you have it. The first four stops in my search for Fresno’s Best Burger had some heavy hitters. So, what are your picks for the best burger in Fresno? These tragedies are mutually exclu sive but connected by one common theme : guns. Gun tragedy befell Isiah’s family again in early June, just a few months ago. While Noah Golding, Isiah’s brother, was helping his girlfriend in a street fight gone terribly wrong, a gunman came up on them and killed them both. This was a teenage street fight—Noah was 17. It should not have ended his life or his girlfriend’s. Yet, in one way or another, gun violence has been at the center of this family’s core—a bonafide American fami ly, some could argue. How many other American families have similar stories of lives cut short by guns, whether justified or unjustified? The cycle of gun violence has gotten so crazy in the U.S. that even Rockstar Ozzy Ozbourne has announced that he’s leaving be cause of it. In a recent interview, he said, “I’m fed up with people getting killed every day… God knows how many people have been shot in school shootings... it’s fucking crazy.” Indeed, there’s no place in the world like the U.S. Any given place or time in Amer ica can be ripe for a mass shooting. In the first installment of this series in July, we noted that we’ve had about 250 mass shootings in the U.S. (remember that a ‘mass shooting’ is defined as a shooting with four or more fire arm-related injuries or fatalities, not includ ing the shooter. There have been many more shootings involving fewer victims). Now, at the beginning of September, we’ve had over 450. The Valley Music Hall On with the

It has taken five years of concerted effort and some tricky navigation through the Covid pandemic, but The Valley Music Hall of Fame is about to honor its second class of inductees. The event will occur at 7 pm on Wednesday, September 21st, at Roger Rocka’s Dinner Theater. It will feature pre sentations of the inductees plus music that is representative of their careers. In keeping with the mission of the Valley Music Hall of Fame of honoring mu sical achievements, regardless of genre, this year’s inductees represent a broad range of the Valley’s musical culture. They include: Gene Bluestein, during his years as a professor at Fresno State, brought many well-known folk musicians to perform concerts for the students and to the Fresno community-at-large, including luminaries Pete Seeger, Doc Watson, and Lightnin’ Hopkins. He created a Folk Institute at CSUF, especially for schoolteachers, so they could learn to include music in the class room. He also developed a program spon sored by the National Endowment for the Arts, which brought nationally known folk artists to CSUF. Those folk artists then taught courses at local schools free of charge. He believed music and art were important modes of expression for everyone, not just the most talented in our society.

Richard Hagopian is regarded as one of the most renowned Armenian musicians preserving the folk and classical repertoire from the Ottoman Empire. For decades he has acted as one of the most important collectors of Armenian music, learning tunes and dances from his parents’ and grandparents’ generations and passing this musical heritage on to his children, the community, and audiences worldwide. Over the years, he has made significant recordings of Armenian music, including Smithsonian Folkways and ARC Records in Europe. The New York Times has called him “one of America’s most accomplished folk musicians.” Like many artistic inspirations, the idea for the Valley Music Hall of Fame came to life over a couple of beers at a local tavern. It was in December 2017 when Don Fisch er, Don Priest, and Ray Settle got together to talk about a way to recognize the musical talent of the Central Valley. Almost five years later, they and the dedicated group that later joined them are getting ready to induct the second group of deserving musicians into The Valley Music Hall of Fame. That first meeting of the minds was inspired by a letter vi olinist Patrick Contre ras wrote to the Fresno Bee - encouraging a way to officially honor the Valley’s musical tal ent. Bee Reporter Josh Tehee then followed up with an article in support of the idea, which in turn got the 3 Amigos to talking. They quickly con cluded that a means to honor the Valley’s musical talent was long overdue and that a local “Music Hall of Fame” would be an ap propriate way to do that. However, they also agreed that this Hall of Fame had to be more than a popularity contest. There had to be some meat to it, and those inducted had to have a proven record of contributions to the Valley’s musical heritage. How to achieve that wasn’t clear yet, but that had to be the under lying goal. (For the record, notes were written on a napkin because no one thought to bring paper.) Those initial conversations set the effort to create ‘The Valley Music Hall of Fame’ in motion. The process involved find ing collaborators, creating a board, establish ing a non-profit 501.c3, building a website, generating public awareness, and much more. It also involved significant research into the nomination and selection process to ensure the requirements for induction would be fair and clearlyTheseunderstood.effortstook almost three years to complete. Finally, in the spring of 2020, The Valley Music Hall of Fame was set to launch its first induction. Then Covid hit, and everything came to a halt. The Board, consisting of the aforementioned trio, plus John Alden, Janice Fleming, Ron Flores, Lar ry Gittens, Conrad Jimenez, Fred Marti nez, and Debi Ruud, considered their op tions. The team eventu ally decided “that the show must go on.” It just wouldn’t be live. So the first induction celebration became a sort of hybrid TV / Zoom meeting with participants sending in their contribu tions from various locations. The Fresno Music Club began in 1905 as a group of women who had a vision and saw the need for classical music concerts in Fresno long before colleges, symphonies, or other cultural arts existed here. These women, all musicians, formed this volunteer group and, for 80 years, presented annual concert seasons of world-class performers. Although no longer presenting the concert series, they continue to have monthly performances at their meetings and an annual public performance. They also continue their longstanding program of offering scholarships to students seeking music degrees or starting their music careers. Tickets for the event are $30 and available at the Roger Rocka’s Box Office. Wine & light hors d’oeuvres are included.
