Bay Area ice cream shop to open in Fresno By Yvette Mancilla @yvette_mancilla

What happens when you squish vanilla ice cream between two snickerdoodle cookies and finish it off with a gob of chocolate sauce topped with sprinkles? You get a CREAM sandwich. CREAM, short for “Cookies Rule Everything Around Me,” first opened in 2010 in Millbrae and

has gained a strong following in the Bay Area. The build-your-own gourmet ice cream sandwich will be opening its first store in the Central Valley in early June. The ice cream-and-more business has been franchising since 2012 and has 10 locations in California and plans to open 20 more stores across the state and in Nevada. Firefighters around the world and in the local community continue to rally in support of recovering Fresno Fire Capt. Pete Dern. Dern sustained burns to twothirds of his body after falling through the roof of a garage while battling a house fire on March 29. He is currently being treated at Community Regional Medical Center. Physicians estimate he will require 14 to 15 surgeries within the next several months. “I was excited to hear that he was able to stand up and look to his window,” said Julie Logan, Dern’s aunt and KFSR program director. “Every great thing you’ve heard about him is true.” Logan said the Fresno Fire Department has provided great support.

More than 3,000 students, parents, and guests came to Fresno State to preview the campus and attend informative events

Henry Madden Library to stay open until midnight for finals By Nayirah Dosu @DoeSuu11

Fresno State students will have an extra hour to cram for finals at Henry Madden Library. From April 27 to May 13, the library will be open from 7:45 a.m. to midnight between Monday and Thursday. Operating hours will remain the same on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The move is aimed to

accommodate students during finals, said Dave Tyckoson, associate dean of the library. “Based on data from our exit gates, more people use the library late at night the last three weeks of finals than at any other time during the semester,” Tyckoson said. Junior Nwachukwu Oputa said she likes that the library has later hours since she is unable to study on campus earlier in the day due to school and

work. “I always thought it was great they stayed opened late,” Oputa said. Other students, like junior Natori Burgess, see the extra hour as a benefit to students who like to study somewhere other than their home. “I think it’s good for people who prefer to study in the library,” Burgess said. Almost all sections of the library, including the DISCOV-

ERe Hub, will be open for students to use during the extended hours. “You can use the collections, check out and return books and laptops, get help at the START Here desk, print documents and use library computers,” Tyckoson said. The practice of extending library hours near finals is expected to continue in future semesters, Tyckoson said.
