Certain areas on campus designated ‘wheels off’ Campus safety measure affects crowded pedestrian spots By Cassandra Sandoval @TheCollegian

In an attempt to prevent injuries, Fresno State has designated several no-skate zones on campus known as “wheels-off” areas. Freshman Jami Kline was injured last fall in an on-campus accident involving a skateboarder. She said she had to spend her morning at the Student Health Center and could not make it to her class. Kline said that she did not even see the other student when she was crossing the street to head to class in the Social Science Building. “She felt really bad about it,” Kline said. “Even when we went to the Student Health Center, she waited for me to make sure that everything was OK.” Kline said that many students are distracted while walking, listening to music, or texting, and that many students are unable to hear things around them. Lisa Kao, manager of environmental health safety, risk management and sustainability office at Fresno State, said the purpose of the wheels-off areas is to increase pedestrian and building safety on campus. intage Days is back for its 41st year as Fresno State’s largest festival and more than 50,000 people are expected to crowd Fresno State’s Maple Mall for the three-day event running Friday through Sunday. The student-planned event is a Fresno State staple ingrained in the university’s history -- from its inaugural year in 1974 to this year. Expect the usual: good food, myriad vendor booths, beer and wine tasting and live local entertainment. The free festival will feature 150 different types of craft vendors, 30 student organizations selling food at booths and 15 student organizations running game booths throughout the weekend. Pulitzer-winning journalist to speak on campus today By Collegian Staff @TheCollegian

Peter Arnett, a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter who has covered wars from Vietnam to Afghanistan and Iraq, will speak at Fresno State today at 10 a.m. in the Satellite Student Union. Headlining the annual Roger Tatarian Sympo-

sium, Arnett will speak about his experiences with the Vietnam War and how the U.S. media became more critical of the conflict than it had of previous conflicts. Arnett, who worked in Vietnam from 1962 to 1975, was one of only a few re-

porters who stayed in Saigon as U.S. troops evacuated and North Vietnamese troops took over the city. The event corresponds with the release of his latest book, “Saigon Has Fallen,” on April 23, as well as with the 40th anniversary of the fall of Saigon on April 30.
