drought. Rep. David Valadao, a Republican whose district includes part of Fresno County, introduced a drought bill that was approved by the House of Representatives Wednesday. Democrats claim that the bill would destroy some environmental protections. The bill also faces a White House veto threat. The President also plans to meet with King Abdullah II of Jordan Friday near Palm Springs.

Campus Pointe breaks ground By Nadia Pearl The Collegian The long awaited construction of Campus Pointe will begin after a groundbreaking ceremony today, setting in motion the next phase of development that Fresno State hopes will provide new opportunities and convenience for students. Located adjacent to the Save Mart Center, the project plans to be a new focal point for the community. Yet as Debbie Adishian-Astone, associate vice president for auxiliary operations and enterprise development at Fresno State, said such a large-scale operation has to be approved and finalized through a number of parties. “A large, public-private mixed use project such as Campus Pointe takes many years to plan and implement,” AdishianAstone said. While the Palmilla and Palazzo apartments were completed in 2009 and 2010, work was stalled while the California State University Board of Trustees revised the environmental impact report. The first phase of retail development is now underway. The 250,000 square feet of space will include a 14-screen cinema, restaurants and shopping. The new commercial plaza “will comple-

A new app-based driving service called Uber launched Thursday in Fresno and is offering free rides throughout February. Uber, a San Francisco-based technology company, uses a software available through its app to pair people with drivers in the area. Currently, Uber is in 70 cities and 26 countries, with Fresno being the newest addition. For the month of February, Uber is offering free rides up to $25 for anyone who downloads the app and enters the promo code “FRESLOVESuberx.” “Right now, we just want to get as many people engaged with the ecosystem as possible,” said company spokesperson Andrew Noyes. While Uber offers a variety of options including taxis, black sedans and SUVs in some larger cities, the company is currently only offering its “UberX” service in Fresno. UberX customers are paired with drivers who use their own personal cars.By using Uber’s app, customers can request a driver for up to four people. Once a driver arrives, the process works similar to a taxi. They charge 30 cents per minute and $1.80 per mile, with an added base fare of $3. Unlike a taxi, the whole process is virtual. Uber automatically charges the credit card customers keep on file with the app. Customers still have the option of splitting fares, but the paying process is done exclusively through the app. The app also has the ability to track the driver’s location as they are en route to the customer, allowing for a real-time estimate of the driver’s arrival. ment the campus and provide services and options” currently not available, AdishianAstone said. “It will provide jobs and internship opportunities for our students, and it will hopefully add to the campus life.”

The university hopes having a shopping complex in close proximity to the campus will create a new experience for students, one similar to the atmosphere of a college See CAMPUS POINTE, Page 3
