One Billion Rising celebrates women and awareness By Jena Rodriguez Special to The Collegian Students on campus broke into dance at noon Thursday for V-Day: a One Billion Rising movement to end violence against women all around the world. One Billion Rising began as a call of action based on the statistics that one in three women worldwide will be raped or beaten in her lifetime. Megan Flores, women’s studies major and president of People Organized for Women’s Empowerment and Representation (P.O.W.E.R.) the student-run club, said the goal of the event was to rise, strike and dance. “Those who participate in the event are rising and making it known that they are against this unnecessary evil,” Flores said. The annual worldwide event is in its 15th year. At Fresno State it was celebrated in the Free Speech Area. Students and faculty danced to the official V-Day song, “Break the Chain” and to other songs including the Macarena and the Cupid Shuffle. The event also included a student playing

a guitar in the background as others recited poems about violence against women. A booth was set up to provide information about the mission of One Billion Rising and ways in which to advocate for women affected by violence. Students held up signs as other students spoke out on violence. The event concluded with students and faculty members reforming the conga line and dancing. Students enrolled in a women’s studies activism class organized the campus event. Flores said she and other students noticed news stories of women being beaten and raped daily. “This doesn’t just happen on the bad side of town. This happened to one of our very own, here on campus last semester,” Flores said. “It’s because of these reasons that my peers and I felt as though this was an appropriate event and cause to bring awareness to our fellow peers.” Flores said that they received support from diff e re n t wo m e n’s org aniz aRoe Borunda / The Collegian

Fresno State 101 fosters new crop of campus leaders By Elly A. Walker Special to The Collegian Although many students do not realize this, they can directly impact the decisions made by the California State University (CSU) board of trustees. However, in order to influence these decisions and bring change to our campus, students must understand the process of change, and that is just what Fresno State 101 offered. Associated Students Inc. (ASI) designed Fresno State 101 as a three-week program, held once a week in order to educate its inaugural class and introduce students to various leadership opportunities within Fresno State. In order to receive a certificate of completion, students enrolled in Fresno State 101 must have attended all three courses. “The fact of the matter is that knowledge itself is not power; knowledge applied is power so once we have it, we have a responsibility to do something with it and that is the idea,” said ASI president Arthur Montejano. “We are hoping to inspire them.” ASI built Fresno State 101 as an on-campus program to help students understand the CSU system, the structure and budget of Fresno State, and various other topics

regarding Fresno State and the CSU system. Approximately 20 students gathered in Room 3212 of the Henry Madden Library to listen to prominent members of the community, Fresno State, and CSU Board of Trustees as they addressed an array of issues regarding Fresno State and the CSU system. ASI was founded in 1921, became a non-profit in 1998 and was incorporated for the second time in 2002. Since then, ASI has provided governance between the university and students. Tara Powers-Mead, an ASI coordinator, spoke of the positive impact of being involved with ASI. “You might consider it a laboratory where concepts become transformed into reality,” Powers-Mead said. “ASI offers high impact learning and hands on experiences to develop lifelong skills. Students involved with ASI go on to become some of Fresno State’s most successful alumni.” The initial meeting of Fresno State 101 be gan on Tuesday with CSU trustee Pete Mehas, who discussed the CSU system’s function and its

Professor says ‘No’ to laptops By Megan Rupe Special to The Collegian

Geography professor Michelle Calvarese is trying to give her students the best learning environment possible, using a seating chart and no-laptop policy. C a l va re s e, wh o h a s b e e n teaching for almost 20 years, said she does not see any correlation between laptop use and better scores in the semesters she allowed laptops. Some semesters, Calvarese said she saw scores go down. “From what I found, a majority of students, although they may use it for notes, they’re consistently toggling back and forth between taking notes, checking their email, updating Facebook statuses, watching YouTube videos, and this was apparent in just their expressions in class.” Calvarese said. “I mean I could be talking about a, you know, Rwandan genocide, and someone in the back is laughing because they’re watching a YouTube video.” In her upper division classes Calvarese does not implement a seating chart or laptop policy. In her larger lecture classes however, she saw that laptops affected both students using laptops and
