ASI candidates talk policy in presidential debate

Highlighting the necessity of accurately representing the student body, the three candidates running for the Associated Students, Inc. presidency voiced similar concerns during a public debate held Tuesday in the

University Student Union.

Outlining the aims of their campaigns, sophomore Jared Bertoni, graduate student Lizbeth De La Cruz and senior Moses Menchaca each offered their opinions on issues such as student fee increases, transparency in ASI funding and how to engage student involvement in ASI legislation.

During the debate, hosted by The Collegian, candidates were asked

a series of questions by moderator Jesse Franz, The Collegian’s news editor. In this interactive style of discussion, members of the audience, as well as the candidates themselves, were able to pose questions.

Castro names Zelezny provost

Dr. Lynnette Zelezny, currently Fresno State’s associate provost, will be the university’s new provost and vice president of academic affairs effective June 1, university President Joseph Castro announced Monday.

Drone sculpture construction begins

Construction of “The Drone Project: A Participatory Memorial” began Sunday with many people already volunteering to help complete the art piece.

The deadline to finish the sculpture is March 28, and Joseph DeLappe, a new media artist and professor of art at the University of Nevada, Reno, is working with his volunteers to finish it by the deadline.

Since Sunday, many people volunteered their help on the project. Dr. Adan Avalos, artistic difector for the Center of Creativity and the Arts at Fresno State, and others from the art department have been trying to spread the word about the building of this sculpture.

“We are getting the word out through social media.

We have put a lot of stuff on Twitter, Facebook and our CCA website. We are also just making contact the old-fashioned way, face to face,” Avalos said.

“So far we have gotten about 20 volunteers and about 15 showed up yesterday.”

Students aren’t the only ones volunteering -- the project has received volunteers from local groups as well.

“We have gotten outside volunteers,” Avalos said. “Peace Fresno has volunteered their assistance. The Center for Nonviolence and other community organizations want to have a part in this.”

Avalos and DeLappe hope to continue receiving volunteer

help throughout the week and remainder of the project.

DeLappe has been an artist since finishing graduate school, and has worked on numerous projects since. He came up with the concept for the drone project after he was contacted by the Center for Creativity and the Arts to create a proposal for their theme.

“I have been working on this project for a little over a year.

The CCA invited me to submit a proposal, and they were interested in my history of doing work in the social-political theme, so we came up with this project,” DeLappe said.

DeLappe is hoping not only to memorialize those killed by American drones, but also to bring attention to America’s drone policies.

“I have been interested and concerned about our drone policies for quite a while now,” DeLappe said. “This seemed like a good opportunity to do a work that will serve numerous purposes.”

DeLappe wanted to have the help of many people to create this sculpture, because he believes it will be more powerful that way.

“This is a memorial. So basically, it is a way for American citizens going through a process of building a memorial to victims of our foreign policy,” DeLappe said.

After the sculpture is complete, it will be displayed on the west lawn of the Conley Art building until May 31. After that, DeLappe will disassemble it and take it back to his studio.

memorial firsthand.

Since creating the idea and beginning the construction, DeLappe has already gotten some local attention on his social media pages and various websites, but he hopes that when it is completed they will receive some national attention.

Many students have had the opportunity to get involved through classes providing them time to work on the project.

“This project is very interesting,” graphic design student Felix Hernandez said. “I like the concept, especially at this scale. It is a good message to

get out to the students and others,” Some students are hoping to gain experience working on large-scale projects like the drone project.

“I wanted to be involved in a project like this to gain more experience as an artist and to spend time working on things like this,” Fresno State student Jacob Ortega said.

DeLappe is still looking for people to volunteer and assist in the construction. To get involved, visit the CCA website or go to the Conley Art building to volunteer.

Serving students is her passion, she said, and she hopes to continue to do so as provost.

“It’s who I am. I’m a mother of three grown children. I absolutely love working with students,” she said. “It’s been my life.

I never get tired of it. It’s absolutely gets me up in the morning.”

Something Zelezny said she is unsure about going into the provost position is the proposed increase of student fees that is to be discussed next year. Before anything moves forward, she will need to know Castro’s plans regarding fees, she said.

Though she was unsure about the possibility of a future fee increase, Zelezny said she feels confident about budget challenges moving forward in her new position. She said her business background and collaboration with a “mission-driven faculty” at Fresno State will support and benefit students.

“I know how to make dollars stretch,”

she said.

Castro commended Zelezny’s work with grants, saying she is the principal investigator of a five-year $3.18-million Hispanicserving institutions grant that is aimed to increase graduation rates.

When asked about the diversity achievement gap, Zelezny said closing the achievement gap among graduates was a high-priority goal for Fresno State.

“We are charged with closing that gap,” she said. “And I think Fresno State is going to be the star in the CSU system because we are putting our full attention on it immediately.”

In order to close the gap, she said, Fresno State is implementing strategies that are already proven to work and that target at-risk students. One of these strategies, Zelezny said, is what she called “flipping classrooms.”

“Faculty are volunteering to redesign classes so that they are more engaging,” she said. “They’re very rigorous, but students are working in what we call “flipped classrooms,” where it’s sort of a re-imagined way of delivering the curriculum.”

room is the tablet initiative, saying it’s another way to engage students.

Zelezny also hopes to support students’ psycho-social needs. She recognized that many Fresno State students are commuters who attend classes and then leave. Zelezny hopes to write grants that will help students connect to the campus more, making them want to stay. This, she said, will boost the student success correlated with a sense of belonging.

“We have a lot of support services here for the students, but what happens in the classroom is the magic,” she said. “So we need to actually use science, if you will, psychological science, to inform ways of making this a welcoming environment for students to succeed.”

Zelezny said one thing that correlates with student success is when faculty mirror students in diversity. She was originally hired as an adjunct professor in the psychology department in 1988 and is proud to have made it to the top of the Fresno State administration.

“I think it’s a tremendous statement that [Castro] selected a woman leader. And again, I think this fits into his overall strat-

“Who would’ve imagined that when I was hired here as an adjunct professor that I would be holding this position within 15-20 years or so?” she said. “It was not something that I ever thought was possible.”

Zelezny earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in psychology from Humboldt State University, a Ph.D. in applied social psychology from the Claremont Graduate University and an M.B.A. with distinction from the Craig School of Business at Fresno State.

During her 25-year service at Fresno State, she has served as a psychology professor and chair of the department, associate dean for the Craig School of Business, dean and associate vice president for Continuing and Global Education and interim associate provost.

Said Zelezny: “I’m absolutely honored to hold this new position, and I’m very, very eager to be a provost that is very much student-friendly and works with students in mind in every single decision.”

“We have the voice from the students,” said De La Cruz, a member of Club Austral.

“We have to make sure we are aware of everything the students feel they need here on campus and their opinions of issues.”

Menchaca, ASI’s current president, said it is was “imperative the students are at the decision-making table.”

“As they say, if you’re not at the table, you’re being eaten at the table,” Menchaca said.”

Bertoni, ASI’s current senator in charge of clubs and organizations, said the role of ASI president is “going to administrative meetings knowing what the students want.”

Yet while all candidates emphasized student representation and increased communicaion, what set each presidential contender apart from the other?

Menchaca said his “reelection is imperative” now more than ever due to the transitional phase Fresno State is currently experiencing with administration changes.

“One thing that only happens once every 20 to 30 years is the changes that are occurring,” Menchaca said. “The president is new, three out of four vice presidents are new and there are more changes to come.

With these changes I feel it is imperative that the student voice remains strong and constant.”

While Menchaca used the idea of a second term as a means to ensure consistency, De La Cruz instead suggested her novel involvement in ASI means she has “fresh eyes and new ideas on how to help ASI reach out to more students.”

“It’s my first year trying to get involved with ASI, so I’ll have a fresh look into campus, especially ASI policies,” De La Cruz

said.

A first generation college student, De La Cruz also said if elected she would work to create more resources for education, using the example of increased library hours.

“I want to be able to help out the students to be able to graduate within a positive timeframe,” she said.

Bertoni offered a point of difference by advocating for an increased allocation of funds to student clubs and organizations.

He said ASI’s funding distribution is the “best way to give students back” the money they pay for university fees.

“Currently it’s $86,000 I believe allocated,” Bertoni said. “I want to get that up to $120,000 next year.”

De La Cruz and Bertoni were similar in both advocating for transparency about university fees and ASI funding. They also discussed the importance of increasing student awareness about who their ASI representatives were. Bertoni said the lack of knowledge within the student body about who leaders are “scares” him.

The student fee increases proposed for fall 2015 was another topic the three candidates had an opportunity to discuss. The university administration will decide next year whether to implement the two fee increases, one geared toward student success and the other aimed toward athletics.

All three said they would need further information about how the fees would be used and how the student population felt about the increases before having an opinion.

“Can’t say you support or deny it when you don’t know exactly where it’s going to,” Menchaca said.

Menchaca and Bertoni suggested ideas to provide students with the opportunity to express their views, whether they agreed or disagreed with the increases.

De La Cruz, on the other hand, said making sure the students were informed was

important to the decision. She suggested ASI could work to “contact all the students” through avenues such as email to inform the student body about both the positives and negatives of fee increases.

De La Cruz also said she felt “ASI has money here on campus that can support the payment of other things” that the fee increase may cover.

“I feel like we have to work with what we have,” De La Cruz said. “If not, then yeah, we do have to support a fee increase in tuition, depending if it’s beneficial for education.”

In light of ASI’s last senate meeting, in which students, faculty and alumni expressed concern about discrimination due to club funding allocation, all candidates were questioned about how they were linked to the dispute.

A member from the public questioned Menchaca and Bertoni about ASI’s decision to limit public comment to one minute per person during the March 5 meeting. He said it was “contradictory” after both candidates focused on “hearing the voice of the students” during the presidential debate.

Bertoni apologized and said that they limited public comment in order to “keep an effective meeting.”

Menchaca said ASI encourages student opinions and he appreciated the “five to six” students who spoke at the meeting, but said the “majority of people” who did speak were not students.

“The second we start getting community members and faculty coming and yelling at our students [ASI senators] and not fostering an environment of education and growth, then we have to put some restraints and guidelines in order for the safety of ASI representatives,” Menchaca said.

Both Bertoni and a member of the public asked De La Cruz, who is involved with M.E.Ch.A – the main group behind the protest of ASI’s meetings, about how she would eliminate bias and agenda in such contro-

versies about Latino issues.

De La Cruz said while she has connections to minority cultures, she is aware about the importance of being detached from such situations and said she’d “present the truth of both sides and have the public determine” their opinion.

Menchaca asked Bertoni, as senator of clubs and organizations, how he felt he handled the M.E.Ch.A funding issue.

Bertoni said while he had no “vote or say” in the decision, he could have been “more aware” and done more “advocating” for the student clubs involved.

Several Greek affiliated members of the audience questioned Menchaca’s accelerated initiation into Pi Kappa Alpha and his lack of outreach to the Greek community during his presidency in the past year.

Daniel Clark, a business marketing major and member of California State Student Association, said he felt all three candidates had suitable leadership experience heading into the position.

“You are underpaid, you are overworked and you’re never thanked for the work that you do – it’s a really thankless job,” Clark said. “I think these candidates have a really good idea of what they’re getting themselves into, and I’m excited for them.”

Clark said he would like to see ASI improve its communication to students and to continue a culture of “high moral ethics” despite senators changing yearly, issues he said are present statewide.

“They only have 365 days to do all the goals they have in mind, and it’s really crucial they have that institutional memory built in,” Clark said.

Victoria Cueveas, a sociology major, said she felt the candidates were “dancing around the questions” during the debate and were not being effective with their answers.

“I think I was just kind of disappointed with the lack of answers we actually got as students,” Cueveas said.

H&M coming to Riverpark ‘Fast fashion’ retailer expected to compete with Fashion Fair’s Forever 21

The stylish will rejoice come fall when H&M opens its doors in Riverpark, a sign of Fresno’s fashion market growth.

Taking up the former Borders space, the 25,000-square-foot store will offer clothing and accessories for women, men and children. The store is scheduled to open in September, said Riverpark representative Tracy Kashian – a retailer she thinks will add something fresh to the shopping district.

“To have something new to come to Fresno is always exciting,” Kashian said.

A worldwide brand, H&M originates from Sweden and has 3,100 stores spread across 53 different countries.

Kashian said H&M representatives had been considering the idea of opening another store in the Central Valley for some time, in addition to their store in Modesto. After visiting Riverpark, she said, “they loved the space.”

Dr. Lizhu Davis, assistant professor in fashion merchandising, said the opening shows the increased demand from Fresno consumers to have more fashionable choices.

“If H&M decide it’s time to open a store in Fresno, you know they definitely have to do their homework to figure out – yes, there is a big market here that can sustain the business,” Davis said.

“It definitely says a lot about the consumers we have here in Fresno,” she said. “We do have a lot of young people that have a craving for fashion.”

H&M is considered a “fast fashion” retailer, taking trends from the runway quickly and selling them at reasonable prices to consumers. Usually compared to Forever 21, Davis said the introduction of H&M would create competition that benefits consumers.

“It will definitely bring in some competition, but competition is always good,” Davis said. “Otherwise, we don’t have the strongest market of varieties.”

hand, may be more expensive, but in Davis’ opinion, increased quality and “focus on different market sections” makes up for the expense.

Davis believes H&M will be unique in the Fresno market because it focuses on “career women” fash-

ion, attracting both young and older consumers who are into their 30s.

“When you go to a new market, you can’t just bring in whatever assortment you have,” Davis said.

“You have to do the whole market research and figure out who are your target consumers and what their lifestyle is.”

Cydney Curtis, a senior fashion merchandising major, believes Riverpark is an ideal place to put the new H&M due to it’s proximity to other popular clothing stores such as Stella, Macy’s and Tilly’s.

Curtis said she travels to San Francisco regularly to shop and usually visits H&M. She said the prospect of having H&M finally come to Fresno is “really exciting” due to its specific marketing toward consumers older than teenagers, different from Forever 21.

“I feel like H&M is more teenager to young adult,” Curtis said. “They offer more and they’re more organized.”

Beyond style preference, Curtis also said due to her in-depth study of fashion merchandising, she’s aware of industry standards, such as clothing quality and the treatment of employees. In light of this, she said between the two competitors H&M deserves more “respect” than Forever 21.

‘Just Roll With It’ aims to raise spinal cord injury awareness

Fresno State’s University Student Union Productions is hosting “Just Roll With It: An Inspirational Evening with the Walk & Roll Foundation” 7 p.m.

Thursday in the Satellite Student Union.

The Walk & Roll Foundation, an organization focused on raising awareness for spinal cord injury awareness, is making its university campus debut Thursday, “Just Roll With It,” which will feature three guest speakers – Arthur Renow, Chelsie Hill of the “Push Girls” reality TV show and Ali Stroker, who’s appeared in “Glee” and “The Glee Project” – and a dance routine from the Walk & Roll Foundation’s dance team.

Marine Vardanyan, “The Point” coordinator for USU Productions, said hosting the Walk & Roll Foundation was a project centered on exposing students and the campus community to a

topic they “haven’t been exposed” to.

“It’s very unique,” Vardanyan said. “Our students haven’t been exposed to something like this.

“Every day we have our own challenges, and we think it’s the end of the world, but these people have reached so many lengths.

The guest speakers’ talks are expected to focus on how they suffered their spinal cord injuries. Renow was a victim of gun violence. Hill suffered her injury in an accident as a passenger of a vehicle driven by a drunk driver.

Kaela Lebow, a 19-yearold college sophomore who is expected to transfer to Fresno State in the fall, is also speaking at the event.

USU Productions is partnering with the university’s Services for Students with Disabilities, Career Services and the Drug & Alcohol Awareness & Wellness Guide Program for “Just Roll With It,” with representatives tabling before and after the event.

‘Dogs go to El Paso Fresno State prepares for first round of CBI tourney

The last time the Fresno State men’s basketball team faced the UTEP Miners was on Feb. 10, 2005, when both teams were in the Western Athletic Conference.

Now with the Bulldogs in the Mountain West and UTEP in Conference-USA, the teams will meet in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational (CBI) tonight.

This meeting comes after the Bulldogs finished the season the farthest they have been in a postseason tournament since 2009. They beat the Air Force Falcons last Wednesday then lost to the New Mexico Lobos – the eventual tournament champions – last Thursday.

Much like the contest against New Mexico, the Bulldogs will play in front of a contentious crowd. Whereas many Lobos fans filled up the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, the CBI’s first-round game will take place at UTEP’s house: the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas.

“We were playing in a neutral court,” Fresno State coach Rodney Terry said, “but a hostile environment. [New Mexico’s fans] brought The Pit to Vegas. It’s no different than what we’re going to face in El Paso.

“We just have to be extremely excited and look forward to a really good challenge on the road.”

In postseason tournaments, this is the first time the Miners and Bulldogs will square off in El Paso. On March 16, 1983, Fresno State beat UTEP 71-64 in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament at Selland Arena in Fresno.

Miners current head coach Tim Floyd was an assistant in that game.

Defense, defense, defense The Miners are riding on their best defensive performance in 50 years. They have held opponents to only 38 percent shooting, tied for fourth-best since 1955.

This year, UTEP held six teams to less than 30 percent shooting.

“When you think about Floyd’s team,” Terry said, “you think about a team that can play defense extremely well and at a very high level.”

A Mountain West team that is comparable to the Miners, Terry said, is San Diego State, because both teams have the defensive versatility to confuse opponents and cause errors. “[The Miners] play some stuff that you

don’t usually see,” said Fresno State senior guard Tyler Johnson. “Our biggest thing is going to be to stay together and take advantage of opportunities that we have to run transition defense.”

And playing in transition is something the Bulldogs have done all year long. And their appearance in a postseason tournament is not going to change the game plan.

“We’re not putting in a new offense or defense,” Johnson said. “We might have to take advantage of things we normally don’t have to just because of the way [UTEP] has played, but we’re going to play the same way.”

Fresno State preps for Texas tourney

The Fresno State Gun Club’s trap and skeet team will take part in its second contest of the year next week: the 2014 Association of College Unions International (ACUI) Collegiate Clay Target Championships.

The competition will take place at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio, Texas. The team will be competing in Division 3, which is for teams with 10 or fewer members.

ACUI’s event will run from March 25-30, and more than 75 colleges and 450 students will be participating. This will be the trap and skeet team’s second and final event of the semester.

This organization was formed last spring

and is funded through Associated Students Inc. Nathan Chang, the vice president of external affairs and a member of the trap and skeet team, said the team is looking forward to this upcoming challenge.

“We used to only have four or five guys, but now we’re sending nine guys to compete,” Chang said. “Our club is growing and growing.”

Chang and his group are also heavily involved in the community. They spend many hours doing community service events such as fundraisers and food drives.

They also hosted a hunter’s safety course last Saturday on campus. All 43 of the people who participated in the course passed.

The team’s first competition of the year took place on Feb. 22-23 in Phoenix, Ariz.

They placed third out of 15 teams. They are surprised they placed that high, because many of the members were new to shooting

trap and skeet.

Sophomore criminology major Yordan Coss was one of them. It was just his fourth time participating in the event.

“We definitely did better than we expected because we were all new to the sport,” Coss said.

Coss, one of the club’s first members, said he decided to give it a try because shooting was a hobby of his growing up.

“I’ve always been into guns and stuff,” Coss said. “Trap and skeet is just something that pretty much everybody on the farm grew up doing, [such as] shooting clay pigeons. So it was just something that I felt would be fun to take part in.”

He also enjoys the social aspect of the club because it allows him to meet new people and establish connections.

“A lot of us met through the club, and we got pretty close,” Coss said. “It definitely

brought a lot of new friendships. I’ve gotten some experience as far as shooting trap.”

Coss said the trap and skeet team doesn’t require one to be experienced in order to join. It welcomes interested students “with open arms.”

The team holds practice every Tuesday in Kingsburg.

“Definitely come out and give it a shot, you don’t have to have any experience with guns or anything,” Coss said.

The Gun Club will hold a fundraiser on Thursday at Tacos Marquitos. Ten percent of all sales will go toward paying for the team’s transportation to Texas for next week’s competition.

“We are open and available to any student that wants to get involved in shooting sports or just support Second Amendment rights,” Chang said.

Fresno State is placed in first round of Lincoln Regional, will play Saturday in Los Angeles

The Bulldogs will face Nebraska in the first round of the Lincoln Regional on Saturday. They are looking for their first win in the NCAA Tournament.

When it came time for the Fresno State women’s basketball team to learn its fate in the NCAA Tournament, it only took a minute and a half for the crowd at the Josephine Theater to erupt into cheers.

The Bulldogs got what they wanted.

On Saturday, the Bulldogs will head to Los Angeles to play the No. 4 Nebraska Cornhuskers at 1 p.m.

It is the first time the Bulldogs will play an NCAA Tournament game in California since 2010 when they lost to Baylor in

Berkeley.

“This is well-deserved,” said Fresno State coach Raegan Pebley, “and good for the Mountain West.”

For Fresno State junior forward Alex Sheedy, this was a mission accomplished.

“I thought to myself, ‘Oh my God, we’re up there right now,’” she said. “Last year’s selection seemed a lot longer, so it was great to see us up there so quickly. I’m really excited.”

It will be the second time this year – out of an eventual three – that the Bulldogs and Cornhuskers will square off. On March 9, the softball teams played each other in the Judi Garman Classic in Cathedral City,

Calif. Fresno State won that contest 1-0.

In September, the Fresno State football team will play its home opener against Nebraska at Bulldog Stadium.

The Bulldogs are entering the NCAA Tournament on an 8-game winning streak.

They are also looking for their first victory in the Big Dance, as they are 0-6. The Bulldogs lost to No. 6 California 90-76 last year.

Nebraska (25-6, 12-4 Big Ten), ended its season with a victory over Iowa in the Big Ten Championship Game. It is the first conference championship in program history.

“Nebraska’s Connie Yori is a great coach,” Pebley said. “They have great guard play and post play historically.”

For now, the Bulldogs are excited about their ability to remain close to home in the NCAA Tournament first round.

“I was looking for West Coast or Midwest,” said Fresno State guard Taylor Thompson, “so we can get some support.”

If the Bulldogs win, they will face the winner of Duke and North Carolina State on March 25.
