Robertito’s Taco Shop coming to Fresno State By Tomas Kassahun @TomasKassahun

The popular local Mexican restaurant, Robertitos, will replace Chick-fil-A on the Fresno State campus this spring. After Chick-Fil-A stopped operating at Fresno State last spring, the school conducted several studies to see what restaurant students wanted to see on campus.

“We brought in a consultant a year and a half ago,” said Deborah Adishian-Astone, administrator of Auxiliary Services. “We heard two concepts. One concept was MeN-eds Pizza and the second was a local authentic Mexican concept.” The Me-N-Eds Pizza now operates in The Bucket at Fresno State. To identify which was the right Mexican restaurant, Fresno State conducted a survey throughout the fall and shared that

information with the food service advisory committee. “The rankings showed the top five of what students want to see on campus,” Astone said. “Robertitos was ranked in the top three that students want to see on campus. We got close to a thousand responses.” After looking at the survey, Fresno State consulted with the top ranked restaurants to see if they are interested in operating on campus.

“Through that process, Robertitos emerged as the restaurateur we chose to operate in the Chick-Fil-A location,” Astone said. “They will operate it themselves like Panda Express does. It’s not dining services that will operate it.” Although there is no specific date, Astone expects Robertitos to start operating at Fresno State after the spring break.

Celebrating Cesar Chavez By Paul Schlesinger @PaulSch_Photog

Cesar Chavez’s legacy and impact on the Valley were celebrated Tuesday in front of his statue in Fresno State’s Peace Garden. Hundreds gathered to listen to former Fresno State

professor Dr. Lea Ybarra, the keynote speaker for the event. She quoted a letter written by Martin Luther King, Jr. to Chavez, reminding students of the importance of community solidarity. “Our separate struggles are really one. A struggle for freedom, for dignity and for humanity,” she said.

Ybarra said that the letter encapsulated the farm workers movement, the Chicano movement, the civil rights movement and “everything that we have and we are still fighting for.” The event also included presentations of the American, Mexican and UFW flags. Danzantes de Aztlan and the Fres-

no State mariachi band also participated in the ceremony. Kapoor and Fresno State first lady Mary Castro participated in the garlanding ceremony that recognized the achievements done by the former UFW leader. Students and community members were invited to place flowers beside the foot of Chavez’s statue.

For Marc Singh, a Fresno State student from Malaysia, high travel costs can sometimes lead to extremely difficult decisions. “I wanted to return home because my grandfather is sick, but expensive air tickets were too much of a factor,” Singh said. “He’s been in the hospital for three weeks, and I’m worried sick.” A roundtrip ticket would cost around $1,500, Singh said. Fresno’s above-average airfare prices are part of a growing trend. Airlines are reducing the total number of available seats, which fills up planes and increases the value of tickets. Local travel experts blame Fresno’s prices on this trend, but the airlines blame increased government regulation for the uptick in flight costs. Fresno airport management hopes that increasing convenience and finding alternative funding will offset the high airfare. “Airlines have been reducing the number of seats available nationwide for the last five years,” said Kevin Meikle, Director of Aviation at Fresno Yosemite International Airport. “Reducing the volume drives up costs. National flight costs are up 3 percent, but we are well below that.” A record travel year More people are flying from Fresno Yosemite International Airport than ever before.

Symposium discusses gender gap By Belen Gomez @XsiempreuniK

The first Fresno State’s Women’s Success Symposium hosted by the Women’s Resource Center took place Tuesday at the second floor of the Henry Madden Library in Room 2206. “The purpose of the panel was to help prepare students to be successful in their career and to give students, especially women, tools to advocate for themselves when they are entering the workforce,” said Jessica

Addams, coordinator at the Women’s Resource Center. Before the panel started, attendees were encouraged to participate in a network activity for thirty minutes where the goal was to introduce themselves to at least three individuals present at the symposium. After networking, the discussion panel started at 5 p.m. The panel consisted of five professional guest speakers: Dr. Kathryn Forbes, Dr. De Anna Reese, Sandy Cha Mumper, Nora Marmolejo and Ana de Alba. Each speaker was assigned a different topic to discuss during the

panel. Dr. Kathryn Forbes, a Fresno State women’s studies professor, talked about the importance of women negotiating in the workforce. She said that she was not interested in the topic of women and work until she was on maternity leave after she had her first baby. “I realized I was doing everything wrong,” Forbes said. “So as I sat on my rocking chair, I was crying.” She did not know how to ask for things or negotiate for wages to avoid
