In a campaign that was largely geared towards maintaining consistency in student body representation, Menchaca said it was “exciting to see that I’ll be able to continue another year and continue to do all the great things ASI has been able to do this year.” Bertoni said although he lost the election, he was “happy with the outcome” of losing by only 37 votes. “It is definitely a respectable defeat and testament to the people I had in my corner supporting me, especially going up against the incumbent,” Bertoni said. As a sophomore, Bertoni said he has plans to still stay involved with ASI in the future. “The title of ASI president isn’t

Growing up, 2014 Miss Fresno County winner Denise Barnes was always asked to define herself in three words. For her talent in the 64th Annual Miss Fresno County and Miss Fresno’s Outstanding Teen Scholarship Pageant at the Tower Theatre in Fresno, she performed an original monologue called “This Is My Talent” to say that she cannot describe herself with just three words. “I have come to the conclusion that that is nearly impossible, because when God created me from the dust of the earth and blew life into my lungs he also blew words,” Denise said on stage to the five pageant judges. “Words that turned into stanzas, he blew phrases, phrases that turned into poetic prose. He created the iambic pentameter of my every thought, and 21 years later, from the crown of my head to the soul of my feet, writing is what makes my heart beat.” Barnes, a sophomore majoring in political science, will represent Fresno County in the Miss California pageant June 22-28 at the Saroyan Theatre. “It’s a blessing and an absolute honor to represent our city,” Barnes said. “I take it as a privilege and an honor to be able to hold this title.” She is involved with more than preparations for the Miss California pageant. Barnes is in the Air Force reserves and is a member of the first Fresno State Mock Trial team to qualify for the American Mock Trial Association’s National Championship Tournament. She aspires to be a commissioned officer and plans to have a career in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps. “I’m definitely passionat about the military and serving my country

A memorial was set up near the Cesar Chavez statue in Fresno State’s Peace Garden to commemorate the civil rights and labor leader Wednesday.

Despite the rain, Fresno State students gathered at the Peace Garden on Wednesday to celebrate the legacy of Cesar Chavez. Chavez fought for the rights of farmworkers in a nonviolent fashion by organizing marches, boycotts and hunger strikes. Chavez and Delores Huerta cofounded the National Farm Workers Association, which later became United Farm Workers. The 18th annual Cesar Chavez Celebration is part of National Farmworker Awareness Week, which aims to raise awareness of farmworker struggles. The event kicked off with Fresno State’s folkloric student dance group—Los Danzantes de Aztlán. Raúl Moreno, coordinator of University Migrant Services, said, “The importance of this event is to honor the legacy of Cesar Chavez, which is about serving others.” Moreno said he hoped the celebration also helps shed light on the struggle of farmworkers and erase misconceptions. “Number one is awareness of the challenges the farmworkers face today, especially those who are undocumented,” Moreno said. “That’s the number one thing that I really hope people come to realize. The undocumented farmworkers are not here because they’re criminals. They’re here simply because they’re seeking for means of survival for their families.” Fresno State student Daniela Flores, chair of the event’s planning committee, said 14 student organizations came together to coordinate the event. “The importance of it is to make students and the public aware that the legacy of Cesar Chavez is still out there, and people are still honoring the work that he did.” Jose Robles, a junior majoring in business accounting, said he attended the event because he comes from a family of farmworkers. “I know what Cesar Chavez is about,” Robles said. “I come from a family that has farmworkers, and this celebration is to honor him for all his service.” Mary Castro, wife of Fresno State President Joseph Castro, was the guest speaker for the event.
