Lucas Lundy is a two-year senior, majoring in recreation administration with an emphasis in community recreation and youth services, running for Associated Students, Inc. president.

Currently, he is participating in the Disney College Program. In order to take part in the program, Lundy is living in Florida and taking online courses from Fresno State.

When he graduates, Lundy plans to work with park departments and youth programs to promote success for at-risk youth. He plans to attend graduate school to study hospitality and hotel management.

Moses Menchaca, a third-year senior in political science, is running for president of Associated Students, Inc. (ASI).

The Patterson, Calif., native is also obtaining minors in animal science, business and philosophy and certificates in cross-cultural competency and legal studies. After his sixyear education at Fresno State, Menchaca plans to apply to Stanford Law School.

As president and co-founder of the Fresno State Gun Club, as well as president of moot court and the legal pre-law fraternity Phi Alpha Delta, Menchaca has exercised academic and organization leadership.

Currently, Menchaca serves as the senator for the College of Social Sciences. In this

A native of Merced, Calif., Nava decided to attend Fresno State to carry on a family legacy.

Several family members, including his uncles, attend the university. He enjoyed the campus when he first visited and appreciates the university and the study body.

Nava has some experience with ASI politics as he was a write-in candidate during last year’s ASI presidential election and has served as an ASI senator at-large for Clubs and

Grapes of Worth Fresno State winery offers products to community, rare education for students

By Brianna Vaccari The Collegian Fresno State’s winery was the first university commercial winery in the country and continues to be the largest, producing up to 9,000 cases of wine every year, and provides students with a rare education and skillset.

The winery bottles 20 different wines and sells them to many retailers in the Valley, including Costco, Save Mart, Sam’s Club and Walgreens. The win-

The revenue from the winery’s sales goes back to the departments of viticulture and enology.

Fresno State began producing wine in the 1950s for research and educational purposes, but in 1997, the university received a commercial bond to sell the wine it produced.

What is the first thing most students wake up to every morning?

A screeching alarm clock, usually.

Maybe the dog next door, trying to prove a point to the groaning garbage truck right outside your window, which conveniently shows up to work before the sun does.

And what do we hear on our way to school on traffic-ridden streets?

Maybe music blaring (never the good kind) from car windows or the honking of hurried drivers and screeching brakes.

When we finally arrive at school, what is the last thing we want to hear? Is it the constant tree trimming outside of the Speech Arts building or the unnecessarily loud dance music spilling from the speakers in the food court Pit? Whatever it is, it’s distracting. The amount and volume of the noise on this campus during all hours is, for lack of a better word, annoying.

Students who have classes in or around buildings such as McKee Fisk, Speech Arts and Professional Human Services, we sympathize with you. You hear it all – from the growling lawnmowers that groom the Peace Garden outside the library to the heart-stopping bass of every Lil Wayne song that pours from the Pit. And how many of us have walked past campus’ own fire-and-brimstone evangelists and thought, “This is the Free Speech Area – not the Free Shout Area”? You can’t even turn to talk to your walking buddy because these guys get louder with every word.

This week, the noise pollution at Fresno State spread as tree trimmers brought out their chainsaws near the Speech Arts building.

Students are not the only ones complaining. Professors who teach in nearby classrooms also become distracted by outside commotion and have to re-organize their thoughts

Landscaping workers use chainsaws and a woodchipper less than 100 feet from the walls of the Speech Arts building classrooms, often beginning as early as 9:00 a.m.

As adults, we understand the need for campus maintenance and upkeep.

As students, it is hard to rationalize why these things are scheduled for 8 a.m. Monday morning instead of the afternoon or evening when fewer classes are held.

Ideally, construction and maintenance would be scheduled on weekends, during scheduled breaks or on school holidays – a time when students are usually off campus. It wouldn’t be as big of a deal if these distractions were not an everyday occurrence.

Students know that some of these problems, such as maintenance crews having other customers and scheduling conflicts, are out of our hands.

But what about the midday concerts taking place in the Pit where students like to chat and study or inquire at nearby booths? Simply

walking by is enough to give you a migraine. The DJs could turn down the tunes to a reasonable level that still provides entertainment for the people who want it, but does not disturb the people who don’t.

And to the pushy preachers: You don’t have to go home, but do you have to yell here?

The university needs to hold the noise level of the space outside the classroom to the same standard that is expected within the walls.

This is, after all, an institution of higher learning. Instructors worry about cellphones being a distraction during class, but surely they are not as big of a nuisance to the educational experience as woodchippers and rock music.

member, Lundy has experienced leadership via interaction and collaboration with others. During his junior year, Lundy was the senator of the College of Health and Human Services. During his time at Fresno State, he has served on the ASI activities committee.

His campaign is centered on the idea of working together and flourishing as a student-body through connecting with others.

“I started off by saying I want to run on Purpose, Friendship and Prosperity.

Pretty much, I want to implement the best-quality services and programs for students. I want to celebrate friendships and highlight academic success,” he said.

His idea for implementing such action would include working with ASI public relations to find students who represent the focus of student involvement, friendship and teamwork.

“I want to celebrate friendships,” Lundy said. “Highlight just some random people and talk about them and see what clubs they’re into — highlight those organizations.”

In carrying out his duties as ASI president he would work on the issues, attend meetings and learn about students concerns, he said.

“I want to utilize the demand for student involvement. I want to bring fresh new faces to change leadership,” Lundy said. “I want to have as much diversity in the committees and councils as possible.”

“I want to make sure I can keep promoting the efficiency from within ASI,” he said.

Working with the vice president of finance and other senators, Menchaca has been trying to reform the ASI budget while also spreading awareness of club money available from ASI. “We set the budget now for ASI, so I’ve been trying to help out a little bit in there. Once the budget is set we have to utilize those funds or else it goes in reserves and it never gets back to the students,” he said.

He said his four main principles are a degree-oriented campus, occupational reforms — this being the addition of more on-campus jobs — getting students more involved in ASI and the campus and finally, a safe and secure campus.

“I call it my DOGS platfor m,” Menchaca said.

Before becoming a senator, Menchaca had some misgivings about ASI. “I always saw that ASI was more of the ‘who you know’ than ‘what you know’ type thing,” he said. “Once I got in there, I realized it is completely different.”

Menchaca says he wants students to get more involved with ASI. He would like to see more students work with and vote for their representatives.

“You can have as many helpers and supporters, but who votes is what matters.”

This year he is an official nominee running on the principles of transparency in student government and a safer campus.

“I would talk with campus police and see what we could do with the money they have,” Nava said. “I would see what is possible.”

If elected, Nava hopes to improve campus facilities with more library hours and small improvements to buildings and classrooms.

“The Food and Family Science building doesn’t have doors in the restrooms, in the stalls. They have shower curtains,” he said. “Things like that, that should be changed. This is kind of a dream—but I would like to see more library hours. If they left the library open till midnight, more students would be here.”

Nava is an intern with Students for Quality Education (SQE). California State University students created the organization in 2007 as a means of campaigning for the rights of higher-education students. They often work with the California Faculty Association.

Education is an issue close to Nava’s heart. As a high school student in his hometown of Merced, he was one of five local students who campaigned for a measure that provided bond funding for a new high school.

“State government is always cutting our education, cutting the budgets.

It makes it a lot harder for students to graduate,” he said.

ASI ELECTIONS INFORMATION The Associated Students, Inc. presidential debate, sponsored by The Collegian, will be held at 5 p.m. on Monday, March 11.

Students, faculty and staff are welcome to attend the debate. It will take place in Studio A of the Speech Arts building.

ASI elections will be held Tuesday, March 19 until Thursday, March 21 at noon.

Students will receive emails from ASI in which they will get directions to vote for president and vice presidents. Students will also be able to vote on senators from their respective colleges.

keting student assistant for the winery, said Fresno State is one of few universities that offer degrees and classes in enology (wine production) and viticulture (grape cultivation). John Giannini is the university’s winemaker who oversees the winemaking process.

The majors are in two separate departments that work together to produce grapes and wine. Students have lab components to their lectures that require hands-on work in their field.

The viticulture department works in Fresno State’s 120 acres of vineyards that produce wine, table and raisin grapes. The enology department then goes through the steps to process the grapes into wine, which can take anywhere from six to 24 months.

Giannini said the winery produces many of the typical wines seen in wine shops. Most of the wines are red wines, and seven or eight are white wines.

Each wine produced is made with a specific variety of grape. The exception is the most popular wine from the Fresno State winery: Tailgate Red, which is made with a variety of white and red grapes.

The processes for white and red wines differ, Giannini said.

For white wines, the grapes are pressed first. A yeast starter is made and added. The fermentation is monitored daily. White wines take around six months to mature.

For red wines, the grapes are crushed and pumped into a tank. The fermentation and yeast starter is the same as that of the white wine. While the grapes ferment, the tank is pumped daily to keep the grape skins wet. The wine goes through another fermentation process and then is pumped into oak barrels to age between nine to 24 months. Then the wine is filtered before it is bottled.

son. In the spring, the winery focuses on blending, tasting and managing the wines.

Although all the wine grapes from the Fresno State vineyard are used at the winery, Joralemon said the winery makes more wine than the vineyard can produce. The winery buys the extra grapes from local vineyards. Duarte Trees and Vines of Hughson, Calif. is Fresno State’s biggest partner, he said.

By growing a wide variety of grapes and producing so many kinds of wine, Fresno State students in the enology and viticulture programs earn a broad education that prepares them for the real world, Joralemon said.

“The university gives students exposure to as many grapes as possible. We show them how to do everything. That way they can choose what they want to specialize in later,” Joralemon said.

Joralemon said very few schools offer this kind of coursework and Fresno State has the largest program.

“These are unique departments that not too many schools offer. Our graduates are highly trained and have a high hiring rate,” Joralemon said.

Joralemon said he believes it is the commercial license that sets Fresno State apart from other winemaking schools.

“We are able to train students in a more realistic way where what they’re learning in the lecture is applied in the lab. It’s a better overall learning experience.”

Art by grad students on display

By Cameron Woolsey The Collegian After many years of painstaking preparation, several art graduate students have begun showing their work at the Conley Art Gallery.

Art instructor Stephanie Ryan said that the art grad exhibition exists as one of the final projects for students.

“This is the culminating experience,” she said. “So [the artists] don’t just make a bunch of work and show it, they have to make work for this show that is focused on one, original idea.”

The average time an art grad student is in the program is roughly three years, Ryan said. Around two years in, the students choose a theme for their exhibition, which they are given a week to showcase.

“They put lots of effort into this exhibitions, and they’ll create their work over the time that they’re in the graduate program,” Ryan said.

The project began with art by Sharon Scott. Starting Monday was Kyle Hailey, and following him will be Adam Mena, Agneiszka Gill, Jonathan Mathis and Dawn Hart.

His work brings modern advertising into focus, while poking fun at its oftconfusing message.

“It’s kind of a satire on moder n advertising,” Hailey said. “They’re basically cultural puns.”

Hailey, who is majoring in art with a focus in printmaking, said that Americans in this moder n culture would understand the humor behind his pieces.

One of Hailey’s favorite prints is a parody of a ketchup ad. Titled simply as, “Ketchup,” the piece become a fanfavorite.

“There’s a ketchup bottle on the bottom right-hand corner, and it just says, ‘Oh god yes!’ And it says, ‘But what the hell does this have to do with ketchup?’

That one is definitely a lot of people’s favorite,” Hailey said.

Hailey said he wants people to think about the advertising they see every day. But most of all, he wants people to have a good time when they visit his gallery.

“I just want people to laugh,” he said.

“That’s the basics of what I want. If nobody really got anything else, I just want [people] to go in there, be able to laugh at a couple pieces and be done with it.”

He said he wants conversation to open up while people look over his work. Hailey asks that people discuss their own experiences with advertisement, and consider the thought that went behind it.

Within each print, Hailey said he has hidden a piece of himself.

“There are a lot of little, almost secret things that I put into the pieces – secret images, secret numbers,” he said. “If you see a bar code it always means something. If you see a number, it’s generally linked to something.

“Names are always significant in my pieces, whether it’s like a Greek mythology reference to something that I’m doing in my life.”

In most of his prints, he uses white ink, which, on the white canvas, is hidden unless viewed at a certain angle. He calls it “white space,” and uses the ink to hide secret messages.

Next to it, when looking at an angle, an image of a scarab beetle appears.

Hailey said he enjoyed how ancient Egyptians used images to convey language. He uses white space to hide chemical compounds, his favorite scent and places where he has worked.

“The white layers definitely range the most, but they definitely tell the most about myself,” he said.

Hailey began his career in art at age six, drawing pictures of his favorite comic book characters on paper. Early on, Hailey had a fascination of imposing people on canvas.

“I was all about comic book heroes,” he said. “People have always been more interesting to me to draw than landscapes or anything like that.”

Hailey said his favorite artist is B a n s k y, a n u n d e rground graffiti artist in the United Kingdom.

“He’s so funny in anything that he does,” Hailey said. “But he’s a little more aggressive with his work than I

am.”

With graduation from the program coming quickly, Hailey is looking at his life in the future.

“Ultimately, I’d really love to be a professor, but if I didn’t make it as a professor I would actually be pretty interested in just keeping my position right now with Fish and Game, or going to another state and doing education outreach.”

Hailey works with the Department of Fish and Game, painting pictures of the native trout for educational purposes. He also contributed to a coloring book, which he said was one of his most enjoyable projects to date.

Though his gallery is his focus this week, Hailey is still busy creating art, and is trying a new idea. Once more, it will be work that revolves around people.

“I kind of want to tie in people’s perceptions about people with candy,” Hailey said. “It’s probably the weirdest thing I could [do]. It’s going to have a lot more personal relationships with people that I’m familiar with.”

Hailey's reception is on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Conley Art Gallery.

Natural Science Club educates peers, community

By Crystal Deniz The Collegian Fresno State students mill past colorful booths lining “The Pit,” the outside seating area of the University Student Union, but often overlook a blue assemblance adorned with our solar system.

This booth represents the National Science Club, an organization devoted to supporting the interests of students in pursuit of teaching careers in science and mathematics. Members and officers can be seen socializing with passers-by and each other throughout the week at the booth.

Natural science is the lens used to understand life around us, Jaime Arvizu, the club’s faculty adviser, said.

“The lens encompasses biolog y, chemistry, earth science, mathematics and physics,” he said.

Arvizu is the associate director and academic counselor under the Science and Mathematics Education Center (SMEC).

together to build and share information, resources and career-goal-related materials.

“Community outreach is another component of the club’s mission which will enhance your learning about the science and math teaching field and help you prepare for the future of becoming teacher professionals,” it reads.

Damion Delton believes the club is quite successful in its mission. The

21-year-old former club president graduated from Fresno State last May with a degree in the biology option of natural science and went on to work at Mendota Junior High School, where he teaches seventh and eighth-grade science.

“The experience [of being involved with the Natural Science Club] allowed me to build connections with other future educators, which ultimately formed a group with similar interests and would help each other out with any

questions,” Delton said.

As president from fall 2010 to spring 2011, Delton worked closely with Arvizu and the club’s officers to create opportunities, such as attending professional development-conferences for the California Science Teachers Association (CSTA) or National Science Teachers Association (NSTA).

Conferences like these offer strategies to develop better classroommanagement skills and ways to create engaging activities to gain student interest, Delton said.

This past fall semester, Delton was able to receive the funding from Mendota Junior High to bring 45 students on a field trip to Fresno State for “Stellar Science,” a science and math event for middle-school students.

The day long event’s seven stations range from fossil formation to geology and astronomy. Students spend about 15 minutes per station and, before moving from one station to the next, they are required to answer questions in their guides related to the designated activity. Students then receive a stamp from the station volunteer, allowing them to move on to the next station.

Delton said that the experience of bringing his students to “Stellar Science” was rewarding and believes the opportunity wouldn’t exist had he not been involved with the club during his time at Fresno State.

“My students were so appreciative and had a blast just getting out of their town, which many don’t leave,” Delton said.

He plans to bring students as often as the school allows because the students enjoy it and learn material that will be or has been taught in his class.

The club also assists the SMEC in hosting “Circuit Science.” The fourday event consists of elementaryschool students visiting 10 stations that range from discovering the animal kingdom to geometry and physics.

Much like “Stellar Science,” students are given “passports” in which they must answer questions and receive stamps to move from station to station.

“We’re giving way too many free base runners to the other team,” Batesole said. “You look at our side and it’s not happening.”

In contrast, the Spartans only used five pitchers through nine innings, almost half as many as the Bulldogs. Those five pitchers gave up four walks and no hit batters.

The Bulldogs defense was

not much help. They contributed three errors in the span of the first four innings. Two of them belonged to third baseman Kevin Viers.

Batesole said the teams’ shoddy pitching and defense is giving its opponents too many opportunities to hurt them, making mistakes that they cannot afford.

“Every inning I think that they scored there was a walk, a hit batter or an error,” Batesole said. “You just can’t give a

Division I team those kinds of chances. We’re not good enough offensively to do that.

It was sloppy on the mound, it was sloppy defensively and it was poor offensively.”

At the plate, the Bulldogs slapped the ball all over the field to no avail. When they were able to make contact it was either right at a Spartan fielder or they simply provided “Web Gem” worthy defense.

Right-fielder Brody Russell had a bright moment for Fresno

State in the third inning when he hit the first home run of his collegiate career. However, with only three runs and three hits on the night, there was not much for the Bulldogs to be satisfied about in Tuesday night’s loss.

Batesole said he is not surprised with the team’s record given how they have played.

“The numbers add up to 3-and-8. You want to be 3-and8; we’ve got a model for you.

On Thursday, Fresno State will begin a four-game series against Califor nia (5-7) in Berkeley, Calif.

Batesole said the Bulldogs have yet to find solidity in their bullpen -- something that has prevented wins.

“We’ve got to find a rhythm in the bullpen,” he said. “We’ve got to find a rhythm offensively, and we haven’t done that yet.”

“We won the tournament by 40 strokes over Stanford, who was second, and you know, the rest of the 16-team field,” he said.

“But when you win by 40 strokes, that was really something. I remember Nick Watney shot a 63 in one of the rounds at Sunnyside, and pretty much nobody could believe it.”

Fresno State will compete in four more tournaments on the road before playing in its first Mountain West Conference Championships on May 3-5 that features No. 4 New Mexico.

“When we play well, we can play with just about anybody,” Watney said. “It’s just that we haven’t been as consistent as some of the other teams.

“That’s our goal in the last four tournaments that we continue to improve, and by the time we get to the conference championship, we’ll be battling for it.”

’Dogs gear up for Pac-12 foes

The temperature is going to heat up this weekend at Bulldo g Diamond. F resno State hosts three teams from the Pac-12 Conference that are each nationally ranked in the Fresno State Classic.

The Bulldogs kick off the tournament on Thursday when they play Iowa State (5 p.m.).

Fresno State plays Oregon (6 p.m.) and Oregon State (8:15 p.m.) on Friday, California (8:15 p.m.) on Saturday and Saint Mary’s (1:45 p.m.) on Sunday.

Here is a preview of the teams the Bulldogs will compete against in the Fresno State Classic.

Iowa State (9-6) Last season: 14-39, 2-22 Big-12 Key players: Senior Erica Miller and junior Liana Henry are hitting .512 and .444, respectively, on the season. The two infielders are part of a Cyclones squad that has seven hitters batting more than .300.

Update: Iowa State is coming off a 2-2 appearance at the Easton Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Fresno State is 4-1 in meetings against the Cyclones.

Bulldogs fall to Spartans Bullpen comes up empty in recent loss

By Zack Edwards The Collegian As has been the pattern with Fresno State baseball this season, mediocre bullpen pitching hurt the Bulldogs on Tuesday in their game against San Jose State. The Bulldogs lost to the Spartan 10-3.

The Bulldogs needed eight pitchers to get through the nine-inning loss. Fresno State coach Mike Batesole pulled starting pitcher Aaron Gillis after facing eight batters in one inning of work. No Fresno State pitcher threw more than two innings.

There were various issues throughout the pitching staff.

The final Classic for Fresno State men’s golf coach Mike Watney, who announced he would retire at the end of the season after 35 years at the helm, was not the most dominant showing of the tournament.

But it was one that saw the Bulldogs knock down 13 birdies and an eagle in the final nine holes to pull past No. 44 Brigham Young and No. 28 Northwestern.

Fresno State flirted with shooting under par in its fifthplace finish in the first round, reached that promised land by the end of the second round – where it also took second in the team standings – and then solidified its ground behind first-place Cal in the final round of the two-day, 17-team, 54-hole tour nament at the Belmont Country Club.

For the Bulldogs, it was minimizing bogeys and hitting timely birdies that helped them stave off BYU, which finished third and 5-under par.

Fresno State finished 6-under par (361-355-358---1074).

The final batch of Bulldogs Watney will coach was one he knew had “plenty of birdie power.”

“I am very happy with the team, especially the way the guys finished,” Watney said.

New sports medicine center to benefit student-athletes

The Fresno State’s Meyers Family Sports Medicine Center is underway as contractors have broken ground and have started work. This $6 million project will act as a “student-athlete village” and will bring all the athletes and staff together under one roof.

“I think the conce pt is great,” athletic trainer Elise Kramer said. “I think it will be a convenient ‘one-stop shop’ area for our student-athletes.”

The sports medicine facility is due for completion in fall 2013 and will be available to all 425 student-athletes.

The 10,000 square-foot, stateof-the-art facility will feature updated equipment in the training room. It will include hydrotherapy pools, rehabilitation equipment, treatment space, nutrition area, on-site X-ray and a student-athlete lounge.
