The Fulton Mall was unusually busy this weekend as thousands attended the annual Cinco de Mayo celebration.

Tons of people ate tacos, pupusas and drank out of pineapples while watching

multiple mariachi groups take the stage in Mariposa Plaza. Each side of the mall was lined with vendors selling traditional Mexican clothing, pottery and other miscellaneous items.

The event was sponsored by Univision Television and Radio and organized by the Downtown Fresno Partnership.

Festivities stretched from Kern Street

to Fresno Street Saturday and Sunday, starting at noon and ending at 7 p.m.

Though Cinco de Mayo is traditionally a Latino event, people of all ethnicities attended the Fulton Mall event Sunday, just one day before the holiday. Hispanic family members of all ages attended as well, first generation all the way down to fourth generation.

High-profile civil rights activist speaks on campus

Angela Davis, an icon of the Civil Rights Movement, offered insight about her time as an activist to Fresno State students Friday as part of the CineCulture film series.

The film series screened the 2012 documentary “Free Angela & All the Political Prisoners” and was followed by a Q-and-A discussion with the activist, and now professor, Angela Davis.

The film documented a period of time in the 1970s when Davis was wanted by the FBI and subsequently imprisoned for about two years.

“Angela Davis’ visit was very special. As an icon of the Civil Rights Movement, a range of diverse groups and communities attended the event,” instructor and club adviser Dr. Mary Husain said. “We moved to the Satellite Student Union in anticipation of a large audience.”

The visit by Davis was in the planning stages since September, and the CineCulture Club was honored to have her speak, Husain said.

“I had been in communication with her [Davis’] agent since last September in an effort to bring her to CineCulture, so I was thrilled when we were able to schedule a date,” Husain said.

Davis expressed her excitement to be able to speak in Fresno.

“It was so wonderful to be here in Fresno. I want to thank all of the organizations and individuals who were involved in the screening of this film and inviting me here,” Davis said.

Davis has a strong connection to the Fresno area. Rodger McAfee, a farmer from Caruthers, posted Davis’ bail in 1972.

Husain was very grateful for the turnout to this screening and to all of those who made the visit possible.

“I would like to thank the community for their support and our sponsors who made her visit possible. I’d also like to extend a special thanks to Dean [Vida] Samiian.

Without her support, this event wouldn’t have happened,” Husain said. “It was an honor to host Angela Davis, and I am very grateful for the opportunity to organize films and speakers for the CineCulture course and film series.”

ather ye internships while ye may, those jobs they are a-flying.

Summer has always had been a romantic time for college students. It has been a time of complete freedom from the responsibility that we will bear in our careers for the next 40 years; a time of self-discovery in which we develop our individuality, build our relationships and see exactly who we are outside the realm of academia.

In college, summer represents the last chance of our youth to absorb who we are and who we want to be without those thoughts being distorted by the responsibilities of our careers.

At least it used to be.

Summer has become something very different today. It’s a time of work or perish. A time to get minimal to no pay as an intern at a company in return for a letter of recommendation. A time of scrounging around in minimum-wage jobs just trying to afford next semester’s tuition and this month’s rent.

While some may be quick to quip that colJesse Franz lege students should have to work hard to get ahead, the question is how much harder are we supposed to work? This isn’t the economy of our parents.

In 2008, the unemployment rate for recent college graduates was 3.1 percent. By 2010, that number had more than doubled to 8 percent. Even those numbers are distorted by the fact that college students in the modern economy are taking low-paying jobs such as restaurant or retail workers that require less education.

Further compounding the situation is that student loan debt in America has topped $1 trillion (with 12 zeros). The average graduating college student in the class of 2013 owes $29,000 in loan debt.

In that kind of climate, who has time for summer? As college students go into a job market where they will be competing with people their parents’ age with decades more experience than them, internships have become a necessity.

Likewise, trying not to bury themselves further into college loan debt and uncertain of the availability of jobs that will enable them to pay it off, modern college students must work to both support themselves and the increasing cost of tuition (which in the California State University system is around three times higher than it was in 1970).

Internships are a good thing. Part-time employment in college is a great opportunity. However, being chained to it by the economic mistakes of another generation is robbing Millenials of one of the most important developmental times of their lives.

Summer should be a time to order an extra beer at the bar because you don’t have school tomorrow, not to get up at 6 a.m. to get coffee for your boss at your internship. It should be a time to take a spontaneous road trip to see things you’ve never seen, not to look at the inside of a deep fryer at McDonalds. It should be a time to feel the sun beat down on your shoulders, and not on the construction worker’s vest you have to wear for your summer job.

We promise you, America won’t devolve into a state of hooliganism. We’ll even try to keep the neighborhood kids off your lawn.

All we’re asking for is a time to be able to reflect on who we are and what we want our lives to be. And that’s a beautiful thing for a college kid.

We’re more than willing to work.

We’d just like to be able to live, too.

House of Juju brings new tastes to Old Town

Special to The Collegian The doors to the House of Juju in Old Town Clovis open at 11 a.m. Half an hour later, the whole restaurant is alive with the hum of lunchtime diners ordering their favorite items.

Owner Julie Glenn is the first one out of the kitchen, rushing to help customers with a smile on her face. Her sunny disposition matches the bright yellow walls of the restaurant, complementing the welcoming, friendly charm that only a local restaurant can provide.

“We saw this as an opportunity to build something new and exciting for the community,” Glenn said.

When House of Juju opened last December, Glenn faced many challenges, including staffing and scheduling. Fortunately, the Glenn family rallied together.

Julie’s husband, Scott, helps run the kitchen, along with her son, Josh Swanbom. Julie’s daughter, Jaynae Franklin, and her husband, Spencer, both work as servers. Justin Glenn, Julie’s son, works as server and manager.

“I love it and hate it at times,” Justin Glenn said about working with his family. “We butt heads at times, but usually [my mom] knows what she’s doing.”

see the entire dining room. The tables are filled with a variety of people, from families to business people on their lunch break.

“Since we opened, we’ve continued to gain popularity and loyal customers,” Glenn said. “It’s unusual for us not to be busy.”

Sara White, a regular customer, is happy to see the restaurant succeed. She met Julie Glenn through a mutual friend and was instantly intrigued by the restaurant.

“The burgers sounded amazing, and the flatbreads sounded interesting,” White said. “I had to go in and try them for myself.”

White was not disappointed and has made House of Juju a first choice when going out to eat.

She chooses House of Juju over other restaurants because she is “more into a family-run, localized business.” She has not been able to find her favorite menu item, the Juju Bleu Bison Burger, anywhere else locally.

“The burgers are great, but the potatoes and dipping sauces are amazing. It’s my favorite thing to have as an appetizer or with my burger,” White said.

“The selection of beers they have is really good, too.”

While Glenn felt prepared to take on the challenges of starting her own business, she has also learned many new life lessons in the past six months.

“The biggest thing I’ve learned is that most people are pretty amazing,” Glenn said. “There are some really incredible people that have crossed my path.”

Performances from local groups, Mix Trix: Dance Club and Crew (MTDC) and Rumba Cruz Salsa Company showcased what the night entailed: a mixture of modern music with the classic salsa.

The night also included open floor dancing, free dance lessons,

food and a raffle.

As one of the attendees new to the genre, Shayne Serrano appreciated being with friends and was open to learning during the night’s activities.

Although there was plenty of salsa and chips on hand, the Fresno State Salsa Club showed its own flavor of spice by sharing its dance moves with students and the community on Saturday.

The salsa club hosted “Salsa Night: Blast to the Past” in the Satellite Student Union for students and the public.

The event was one of the club’s biggest of the year to present what the club is all about—having fun with friends through dancing.

Student Julia Spencer found out about the club through one of her friends who is an officer and enjoyed it right away.

“We wanted to do something different,” Serrano said. “I don’t know any salsa, but I’m up for anything and willing to try.”

Amy Williamson, Salsa Club treasurer, said the club has been around for 11 years, and Saturday was the eighth annual “Blast to the Past” night.

Williamson said the purpose of salsa night is to “incorporate modern mainstream music infused with salsa to have a fun night.”

The club’s goal is to provide people with a fun, educational environment to learn salsa in a safe place, Williamson said.

Salsa Club members meet every Friday at 7 p.m. in the Peters Business Building and have lessons for beginner and advanced dancers until 8 p.m.

Social dancing is from 8 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. The cost is $5 for nonmembers.

The lessons are not only exclusive to salsa. Alternating from salsa to Dominican Republicoriginated styles of dance like bachata, merengue and more, showcase the club’s openness of Latin dance lessons.

“After the lessons, they open the floor, and it’s more of a social event,” Spencer said. “You implement the moves you learned during the lesson and dance. They play all kinds of different music throughout the night, so it’s not just salsa or bachata.

“You just have a lot of fun that way.”

The $40,000 grant (which also benefits the Dominguez Hills, Sacramento, Fullerton, Northridge and San Jose CSU campuses) will allow for a digital project that categorizes letters, newsletters, tapes and photographs from the 1940s in which more than 120,000 U.S. citizens of Japanese descent were forced into incarceration during wartime.

Fresno State’s Special Collections Research Center at the Henry Madden Library was awarded the first funds in conjunction with CSU Dominguez Hills. The funding will support digitizing 180 items as part of the pilot phase. The campuses are seeking additional funding to digitize the complete collection, which comprises thousands of documents.

“Outside of the JapaneseAmerican National Museum in Los Angeles, the CSU has the best collections on JapaneseAmericans as part of its history of commitment to, and involvement with, their respective local communities,” said Tammy Lau of the Special Collections Research Center in a release.

Dr. Joseph Castro’s presidential investiture is May 10 The investiture of Dr. Joseph Castro as Fresno State’s eighth president is on May 10 at 2 p.m. at the Save Mart Center. More than 3,300 people have made reservations as of May 1 to attend the ceremony.

California State University Chancellor Timothy White will formally confer the authority and symbols of high office on Castro, who was appointed as Fresno State president last May. Castro is the university’s first Latino president. Castro’s investiture will also mark the first time Valley native receives the Fresno State Presidential Medallion in the school’s 103-year history.

Fresno State Winery earns gold medal for 2007 Saviez Syrah The Fresno State Winery won a gold medal at this year’s Pacific Rim Wine Competition in San Bernadino for its home-grown 2007 Saviez Syrah.

The winery was also recognized for its 2011 California Syrah and 2010 Zinfandel, both winning silver medals.

The Pacific Rim Wine Competition included more than 30 professional wine judges who conducted blind tastings of more than 2,000 wines on April 24.

The 2007 Saviez Syrah is part of the gold medal-winning wines that will be poured at the National Orange Show Fair on May 22-26 in San Bernardino.

Fresno State’s bats fall short in Senior Day comeback

Christopher Livingston • The Collegian Fresno State softball senior’s numbers were proudly displayed at Margie Wright Diamond during the ‘Dogs’ Senior Day match against the Colorado State Rams.

Fresno State’s softball honors continued on Sunday when five Bulldog seniors were commemorated on the pitching circle before the ‘Dogs’ series finale against the Colorado State Rams.

Shortstop Brooke Ortiz, third baseman Vonnie Martin, first baseman Stesha Brazil, left fielder Kapri Angotti and catcher Kim Fisher each received roses and caught first pitches from family members.

The Bulldogs almost pulled off a big upset to stay alone in first place in the conference, but Colorado State’s early offense prevented them from tying the game in the bottom of the seventh.

Down 8-4 in the seventh inning, Ortiz singled up the middle. Right fielder Michelle Solomon followed with a ground ball that was mishandled by Colorado State shortstop Ashlie Ortega.

Ortiz was out at third base in a fielder’s choice off Martin’s bat, but Brazil walked to load the bases. Whitney Smith also drew a walk to force Solomon home and trim Colorado State’s lead to three.

Martin and Brazil scored in consecutive at-bats to bring the ‘Dogs within one run of the Rams, but Angotti chopped a groundout to end Fresno State’s home season.

“We worked very well as a team and never let up,” Martin said. “In softball, you have seven innings. And playing all seven is

definitely key to winning ballgames.

“I had a feeling we were going to come back, we didn’t expect anything less. We fell a little bit short, but we pushed and put pressure on [the Rams]. We tried to push that last run, but we couldn’t get it.”

“That fight in the last inning was just tremendous,” said Fresno State head coach Trisha Ford. “We just came up a little short.

Some errors cost us some runs late in the game. It’s kind of how the ball falls sometimes.”

With victories on Friday and Saturday, the Bulldogs won the series 2-1, but their spot in first place remains shared. Instead of Colorado State tied with the ‘Dogs on top of the Mountain West, the Boise State Broncos worked their way up.

The Broncos won their match over New Mexico in walk-off fashion on Sunday to cap a three-game sweep and extend their winning streak to eight games. Now, both Fresno State and Boise State are 12-7 in conference play with three games remaining on their schedules.

The Bulldogs will visit the last-place Nevada Wolf Pack this weekend, and Boise State will travel to California and play the San Diego State Aztecs.

“We’re not going to worry about the ifs, ands and buts,” Ford said. “We’re just going to keep taking it one game at a time. I think we’re in a good position, and we’re going to be all right. We just have to go out and take care of business.”

Bulldogs fall to MW rival on the road in Game 3

The Diamond ‘Dogs (25-24, 12-15 Mountain West) were handed a 5-2 loss by the conference rival San Jose State Spartans Sunday afternoon at Municipal Stadium.

The Spartans (16-33, 9-17 MW) started off hot, recording four runs off five hits in the first inning for an early 4-0 advantage.

SJSU added another run in the second for a commanding 5-0 lead.

However, the Bulldogs responded in the fourth inning when they cut the Spartans’ lead to three. Manny Argomaniz hit a bunt single to send Taylor Ward home and get the ‘Dogs on the scoreboard. Moments later, Chris Mariscal scored the second and final run of the afternoon off an RBI single from Jesse Medrano.

The Bulldogs were unable to capitalize on run-scoring opportunities. They left two runners on base, with the tying run at the plate, in the fourth and fifth frames.

Junior right-hander Derick Velazquez was the starting pitcher for the Bulldogs, but Blake Quinn relieved him after just 1 2/3 innings pitched. Quinn closed out the fourth inning before the Bulldogs called in William Munro for the next 1 2/3 innings. Right-handers Garrett Mundell and Jake Shull pitched the final four innings for Fresno State.

The Bulldogs had taken Game 2, shutting out the Spartans for an 8-0 victory, but SJSU also topped the ‘Dogs in Game 1 to take the set. The three-game series win over Fresno State marks SJSU’s first of the season.

Fresno State will take on CSU Bakersfield (20-26, 12-9 Western Athletic Conference) Wednesday in what will be its final road game of the regular season. The Roadrunners currently stand in a tie for fifth place in the WAC after completing a three-game road sweep of Northern Colorado over the weekend.

The ‘Dogs have five contests remaining on the schedule before they head to Las Vegas for the 2014 Mountain West Baseball Championship Tournament which runs from May 21-25.

‘Dogs dedicate softball diamond to applaud winningest coach

When Margie Wright was 10 years old, she wanted to play on her Little League Baseball team. She wasn’t allowed to – the league only allowed boys – so she was determined to make her mark in the sport.

On Saturday, she notched one more achievement it when Fresno State’s 3,288-seat softball stadium was renamed in her honor. The scoreboard in dead-center field and banner that greets Bulldog fans to the facility now read “Margie Wright Diamond.”

Wright, the winningest NCAA Division I softball coach in history, returned to Fresno from her native Illinois for the renaming ceremony. Fresno State President Joseph Castro, athletic director Thomas Boeh and former player and current Fresno fire chief Kerri Donis all spoke honoring Wright.

U.S. Rep. Jim Costa presented Wright with a Congressional Record of Honor on the softball diamond, and then she threw out the first pitch before the ‘Dogs’ match against Colorado State.

“I can’t really describe the feeling,” Wright said. “It’s one of great pride, but also I’m very humbled. There are so many people who helped make this happen. It’s just a great day for everyone.”

Wright began her coaching career at Illinois State in 1980 and spent six seasons there, tallying a 163-92-2 record. She began her Fresno State tenure in 1986 and spent 27 seasons, finishing her career in 2012 at 1,457542-3.

She pioneered the construction of her eponymous stadium in the mid-1990s after years at the old softball diamond near the Residence Dining Hall.

“We used to play mid-week games at 1 o’clock, because we didn’t have lights,” she said. Then she pointed at the alumni in attendance. “Some of you might have lost your jobs over the years from making sure you came by those games.”

And despite the conditions at the old softball field, the average attendance still remained over 1,000. That motivated her to seek a better facility for the Fresno State faithful.

At first, she assembled a stadium committee that met every Friday to discuss renovating the old diamond. But

the chance to build a state-of-the-art facility quickly surfaced.

“From there, as we kept meeting, we just got more and more motivated to do something bigger and better,” Wright said. “It was too important to the fans and players to have a facility that this community could be really proud of.”

Finally, the committee secured financing, and groundbreaking for the new stadium began in April 1995. It only took 10 months to build, and the diamond was ready by Fresno State’s home opener in February 1996.

The Bulldogs went on to have a successful record at the facility. They won 82.5 percent of their home games and have yet to lose 100 in 19 seasons (467-99). From 1996-2013, the ‘Dogs averaged 1,741 people per game.

Some 18 years later, Wright looks at the scoreboard and sees her name in large letters. It is Fresno State’s big “thank you” for her contribution to Division I softball.

“It gives me goosebumps,” she said. “I’m really happy they were able to do it so that I can at least enjoy it. So many people never get to know about their legacy, so I feel really fortunate that Dr. Castro got it through quickly.”
