President Barack Obama moved to halt deportations Thursday for nearly 5 million undocumented immigrants, defying congressional Republicans who called his unilateral action an affront to the constitutional separation of powers.

"To those members of Congress who question my authority to make our immigration

system work better, or question the wisdom of me acting where Congress has failed, I have one answer," Obama said during a prime-time statement from the White House East Room. "Pass a bill."

Fresno State introduces new athletic director today

The Fresno Bee reported Thursday night Jim Bartko, executive senior associate athletic director at the University of Oregon, is Fresno State’s new athletic director.

Fresno State will formally introduce its new athletic director today at a 10 a.m. press conference, filling an administrative position that’s been vacant since Thomas Boeh was reassigned to a special advising role by university president Joseph Castro in August.

A search committee interviewed a candidate pool last week assembled through DHR International, a Chicago-based search firm.

Stephen Robertello, senior associate athletics director for intercollegiate services, and Cynthia Teniente-Matson, CFO, vice president for administration and athletic coporation board chair, have served as co-athletic directors on an interim basis this semester.

In an August interview with The Collegian, Castro said he expected to have the new athletic director on board as early as the start of next semester and expressed hopes in hiring an AD with strong fundraising experience in a shifting college athletics landscape.

Obama encourages FCC to support net neutrality

Earlier this week, President Barack Obama publicly announced his support of net neutrality, the idea that the Internet should be regulated equally, devoid of discrimination of user, website or country of origin.

SHEEP CARTOON WAS AN AFFRONT

AGRICULTURALISTS AREN’T TO BLAME We live in a very twisted society. It has become so far removed from the food that it eats that anytime something goes wrong and animals are hurt, we blame the agriculturalist.

Agriculture is only mentioned when things go wrong, but it is never built up when things go right.

Negative news always trumps positive news, but sometimes the public cries out saying that negative news is not news at all.

The comments on the news surrounding the student who sexually assaulted a sheep at Fresno State have caused a stir in the agriculture department.

A cartoon in The Collegian painted a picture of agriculture in a very negative manner.

After all, apparently it was the agricul-

turalist who was responsible when a computer science engineering major thought it was perfectly acceptable to have his way with an animal.

According to the cartoon captioned, “Fresno State’s a good ag school, they said.

It will be fun, they said,” it is the agriculturalist who is at fault for allowing this to happen.

The image of a sheep looks into the viewer’s eyes, begging for help.

In times like these, when misconceptions spread and the news becomes so viral that students’ relatives and friends are calling from New York, Florida and other states far away from this tragedy, the agriculturalists are being punished.

We are the ones taking the brunt of the pain. We are the ones getting thrown under the bus and crushed with a hundred pounds of lies and stories about how we messed up.

We did not molest the sheep.

However, that does not seem to matter.

When your own school newspaper puts the agriculturalist at fault with a few strokes of the pen, it makes a person wonder of the ethics of a society that would gladly destroy the foundations that was built upon.

Agriculturalists break their backs day in and day out. They grow and raise the food that makes it to your table.

You can be a vegan, a vegetarian, a non-

GMO consumer, a purely organic consumer, grass-fed, non-dairy, an any-way-youlike-to-eat kind of person, but your food still touched the hands of the agriculturalist.

You can call agriculturalists evil for their views. You can spit in their eye and smash them to the ground when the smallest negative news story arises.

However, you cannot combat the fact that every meal you consume was touched by the agriculturalist.

The agriculturalist is perhaps one of the hardest-working individuals left in this country. The agriculturalist still wakes up before dawn to toil in the fields each and every day.

Perhaps the agriculturalist may no longer have need to use the same worn-down methods as our ancestors as technology has progressed.

However, agriculturalists still spend their days checking the livestock, fixing the fences, watering the soil, making sure the plants are free of pests and so much more.

The agriculturalist is a scientist, a mechanic, a speaker, a farmer and a teacher.

The agriculturalist wears many hats, yet still continues to keep the tradition alive of feeding the society that we live in.

Without the agriculturalist, our society would crumble. Without the generosity

and kindness of agriculturalists, our lands would remain fallow and our stomachs empty.

The agriculturalist continues to plow the fields and pray for rain regardless of the public’s opinion. Negativity does not get the agriculturalist down for too long, for there is work to do, hungry mouths to feed.

Without the agriculturalist, food would not grow. Without the agriculturalist, domesticated animals would not live. Without the agriculturalist, so much of our world would change.

This is the most important realization people can have. Especially now.

Especially when our college’s newspaper allows the hard work of the agriculturalist to go unnoticed, and the simple act of a twisted member of this society to affect the perceived view of the agriculturalist.

We cannot stand for this.

The agriculturalist does not deserve this backlash. The agriculturalist does not abuse animals.

The agriculturalist has the dignity and understanding to treat animals with respect.

And yet the agriculturalist is demonized around every twist and turn when something goes wrong.

And when something goes right, the agriculturalist goes unnoticed.

IN BRIEF Students required to complete module on sexual assault before fall 2015 registration All students looking to register for fall 2015 classes are required to complete an online training module about sexual assault or face not being allowed to enroll.

A campuswide email was sent out on Thursday notifying students about the Haven Understanding Sexual Assault module, an online, interactive program that is designed to inform students about issues concerning sexual violence.

“The University is committed to creating and sustaining a campus community free of sex discrimination, sexual harassment, sexual violence, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking,” the email said.

Signed by Dr. Frank Lamas, vice president for student affairs, and Dr. Lynnette Zelezny, provost and vice president for academic affairs, the email said, “We hope this training will result in a better-informed, healthy and safe campus community.”

The two-part program must be completed before March 20, 2015.

Costa keeps seat in House after final votes tallied Incumbent Congressman Jim Costa (D) has been re-elected to the House of Representatives, narrowly defeating challenger Johnny Tacherra (R) in the contest for California’s 16th Congressional District.

Vote counting in Fresno, Madera and Merced counties within the electorate finished on Wednesday, leaving Costa ahead by 1,320 votes.

Costa, who was narrowly trail-

ing after all votes were counted on Election Day, had been waiting on late-counted, usually Democratic-leaning, provisional ballots in hope they would be enough to carry him to victory.

“It is an honor to be re-elected to represent California’s 16th Congressional District,” Costa said in a statement. “As a lifelong Valley resident, I am humbled that the people who live here have entrusted me to continue being their voice in Congress.”

Get It On promotes dialogue about sexual health issues

Nunes named chair of House Intelligence Committee California Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Tulare), who represents Fresno State’s congressional district, has been appointed chairman of the House Intelligence Committee.

Nunes will take over chairmanship of the committee from retiring Michigan Rep. Mike Rogers. He will be tasked with a leading role in managing the U.S.’s vast intelligence community.

First elected in 2002, Nunes coasted to re-election earlier this month, beating his opponent, Suzanna “Sam” Aguilera-Marrero, with 72.3 percent of the vote to her 24.7 percent.

Fresno State Phi Kappa Phi recognized for ‘excellence’ The Fresno State chapter of Phi Kappa Phi, an interdisciplinary honor society, has been recognized as a “Chapter of Excellence” by its national parent organization.

The recognition, which is the highest commendation a chapter can receive, is granted for academic excellence and community service.

This is the Fresno State chapter’s second consecutive year receiving the award and makes it one of only 29 chapters out of 316 to receive the distinction.

Students were encouraged to discuss and create open dialogue about sex at Get It On on Wednesday, an event hosted by Cosmopolitan magazine in the Satellite Student Union.

The event included a panel and information about topics such as sexually transmitted diseases, unwanted pregnancies and sexual assault prevention.

Among the panelists were Kelly Mickle, a Cosmopolitan magazine editor and writer; Kathy Yarmo, a Fresno State health and wellness promotion coordinator; and moderator Amanda Seales, a comedian and host who has been on VH1 and MTV. Fresno State was one of three schools chosen to host such events through a partnership between the Planned Parenthood Federation of America and Cosmopolitan magazine. The university was listed as a host of the event in November’s Cosmopolitan issue, alongside a 12-page

spread about STD testing, sexual health and consent.

Pedro Elias, director of public affairs at Fresno’s Planned Parenthood, said “we want to make sure folks have a safe and comfortable space to be able to talk about that.”

“We want to make sure students are aware of it,” he said.

“Especially with the change and implementation of laws such as ‘yes means yes’ and making sure that we also talk about sexual assault on campus and bring that awareness to the campus.”

Cecilia Knadler, club president of People Organized for Women’s Empowerment and Representation, said there is a need of trying to change our culture from that of a rape culture to a consent culture.

“We want all the sex that is had, to be all the sex that is wanted,” Knadler said.

Elias said students should also come to such events in order to speak and hear others talk about sex.

“We want to make sure stu-

dents have an opportunity to ask questions and feel comfortable to talk about sensitive issues like this, because for some folks it is sensitive,” he said.

Daniella Parra, a member of P.O.W.E.R. and senior liberal and women’s studies double major, said such dialogue is important “whether you choose to have sex or choose not to have sex.”

Society needs to stop sweeping dialogue about sex under the rug, and people need to be educated on all the options they have, she said.

Knadler said it is important for students to talk openly about sex because the majority of unwanted pregnancies and sexual assaults occur to young people aged 18 to 25.

“We are at a very vulnerable age and a very vulnerable place,” Knadler said.

Gaining knowledge about our sexual health and the resources available starts on campus because “what we learn for ourselves is also what we will be teaching our children,” she said.

Some Internet service providers, such as Comcast or Verizon, have a vision for creating “Internet fast-lanes,” which would allow corporations to provide faster or slower speeds depending on which websites paid for that service and factors like location and how much users pay.

Although Obama has no direct authority over the Federal Communications Commission, he addressed it in a public statement, suggesting it establish new policies directed at net neutrality.

“The FCC is an independent agency, and ultimately this decision is theirs alone. I believe the FCC should create a new set of rules protecting net neutrality,” Obama said. “Ensuring that neither the cable company nor the phone company will be able to act as a gatekeeper, restricting what

you can do or see online.”

This was met with partisan criticism, most notably from Texas Sen. Ted Cruz (R), who issued a tweet following President Obama’s statement on net neutrality.

“Net neutrality is Obamacare for the Internet; the Internet should not operate at the speed of government,” Cruz tweeted.

Reporters and critics pointed out that Cruz’s perception of how the internet works is misguided and misinformed. Cruz then wrote an op-ed piece titled “Regulating the Internet threatens entrepreneurial freedom” in Politico, further emphasizing his opinion.

On Wednesday, Obama created an online petition, set up by the administration to show support for his stance, to give to the FCC. This type of petition and organization in terms of Internet

rights was also showcased in 2012, when millions of Internet users became activists in opposition to the “Stop Online Piracy Act.” If passed, it would have allowed law enforcement to combat online piracy and copyright infringement. It also would have allowed domain names to be deleted and block access to websites, which opponents claimed offended First Amendment rights and was censorship.

Internet companies like Google and Wikipedia, along with their users, quickly rallied in opposition, which was an influence in the bill not passing.

“The Internet has been one of the greatest gifts our economy — and our society — has ever known,” Obama said. “In service of that mission, there is no higher calling than protecting an open, accessible and free Internet.”

Jennifer Lawrence takes flight in ‘Mockingjay – Part 1’ @yvette_mancilla

The “Girl on Fire” is back and is equal parts badass and tarnished symbol of the Panem rebellion.

Unless you have read Suzanne Collins’ “ The Hunger Games” trilogy or have recently binge-watched the previous two films of the dystopian franchise, you may, no, will be lost once you see Katniss back on the screen.

Studio executives seem to be following the trend set by the final installments of “Harry Potter” and “Twilight” in splitting the final adaptations into two films. “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1” is the first of the last. Per the usual with fans, this formula tends to receive mixed feelings and reactions. However, regardless of a presumed monetary motive, “Part 1” does a fair job of evenly splitting the roughly 390 pages of “Mockingjay.”

“Mockingjay” is meant to be different than “Catching Fire.” The arena of the Games is no longer in play. Rather, the focus is on our reluctant heroine Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and her role as the propaganda tool for the war between the districts and Capitol. We first see Katniss suffering from effects of PTSD from the Games and adjusting to her newfound placement deep underground in the now-existent District 13.

The film also devotes time to fleshing out and introducing more secondary characters as well as examining Katniss’ feelings for both her best friend Gale and fellow victor Peeta.

The franchise has always attracted A-list actors. President Coin (Julianne Moore) from District 13 acts as another authoritative force in Katniss’ life with an alternative agenda and questions Katniss’ capabilities as the symbol of the rebellion until Plutarch Heavensbee (the late Philip Seymour Hoffman) proves her otherwise. Coin relies ef-

fects on the former Head Gamemaker and rebellion strategist on how to use Katniss as a rallying cry for the embattled districts.

While Katniss is still feeling tremendous guilt in having a role on the Capitol’s increased terrorism of its people, a sober Haymitch (Woody Harrelson) provides her the stability to move onward. A ragtag video crew follows suit, led by skilled director Cressida (Natalie Dormer of “Game of Thrones”) who documents the Mockingjay as a force of nature—a relatively simple task as Katniss finds herself enraged and hopeless against her nemesis President Snow (Donald Sutherland) with his taunts of holding Peeta captive.

Despite the constant visuals of a sunless, dreary underground environment and less action than its predecessors, the superb acting and sly comedic scenes are to smile and cheer for. Thanks to Elizabeth Banks in her returning role as Effie Trinket (which wasn’t originally in the “Mockingjay” novel) for providing the former stylist with a heart and humor in spite of her fish-outof-water surroundings, “I’m condemned to this life of jumpsuits,” she quips.

And although the late Hoffman will still be seen in a final performance for “Mockingjay – Part 2,” his added gravitas and sleight-of-hand humor goes lengths in his supporting role. Sadly, when his character states “anyone can be replaced,” it’s a line packed with a punch, for this gifted actor cannot be and is an extra comfort in the bleak world of the franchise.

Although the pace seems to drag toward the end, I can’t see the ‘Mockingjay’ novel not being halved for adaptation as there is too much ground to cover and not enough time to do so in a single film.

In the end, a sort of cliffhanger only readers are aware of captures where “Mockingjay – Part 2” will pick up, but will still leave them hungry (sorry, I had to) until next November. Until then, may the odds be ever in your favor.

This leaves those stranded students with the challenge of constructing their own holiday meals, attempting to cook on stoves located within various dorms or doing takeout.

Julius Armstrong, a junior from Philadelphia majoring in public administration, considers himself an expert at surviving Thanksgiving in the dorms.

“I view myself to be somewhat of a veteran at this,” he said. “Last year, I also stayed here in the dorms, and I got by mostly on ordering takeout from local restaurants around campus since I can’t cook a lick.”

Will Wilkins, a junior from Antioch majoring in kinesiology, works at the local Wendy’s on Shaw and Cedar avenues and notices an upward spike in students during Thanksgiving break.

“Normally you see college students frequenting here during these times, and rightfully so,” he said. “Considering the time, effort and the proximity to campus, it’s almost a no-brainer.”

Xi Bao, a senior from Hong Kong majoring in interior design, plans to spend Thanksgiving with other international students, most likely at a diner.

“I and others from overseas only go home for the Christmas break. During this time, we have our own tradition of going to a local diner and reminiscing on Thanksgiving back home in our own native countries,” she said. “It also helps when you can order as many desserts and wash them down with alcohol, as well.”

The president’s actions will suspend the threat of deportation for millions, including about 4.1 million who will be temporarily protected and allowed to apply for work permits provided they are parents, pass a background check and pay fees, and 270,000 immigrants who were brought to the country illegally as children.

At the same time, Obama announced plans to enhance security at the border and to shift focus inside the U.S. away from all undocumented immigrants, to those who are specifically criminals.

“What I’m describing is accountability, a common-sense, middle-ground approach,” Obama said. “If you meet the criteria, you can come out of the shadows and get right with the law. If you’re a criminal, you’ll be deported.”

His moves were the most sweeping change in immigration policy arguably since Congress and Ronald Reagan agreed to similar changes in the 1980s.

Today there are as many as 13 million unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. Neither party believes it possible to deport them en masse, although many Republicans favor making it harder for them to continue working in the United States, which they argue could pressure them to leave on their own. Other legislative proposals have called for them to return home and reapply for authorized immigration.

“Instead of working together to fix our broken immigration system, the president says he’s acting on his own. That’s just not how our democracy works,” said House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio.

“The president has said before that he’s ‘not king’ and he’s ‘not an emperor,’ but he’s sure acting like one. And he’s doing it at a time when the American people want nothing more than for us to work together.”

“The president will come to regret the chapter history writes if he does move forward,” said Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., soon to become the Senate majority leader.

But advocates heralded the move as overdue and just.

“I’ve been fighting for immigrant rights for over 30 years now, and this is the biggest victory our movement for immigration reform has seen in all that time,” said Frank Sharry, executive director of America’s Voice, which advocates for an immigration overhaul.

By acting on his own, Obama’s executive order could create uncertainty for immigrants because it is temporary and subject to the results of the 2016 presidential election. The next president could maintain the program or end it immediately with the same stroke of a pen.

“We can’t commit a future administration,” acknowledged a senior administration official who spoke on condition of anonymity as a matter of policy.

That sets up the 2016 election as a referendum on Obama’s decision, one in which candidates will be asked to either

promise they will continue the policy or end it. If they say they will end it, they will be asked to say whether they would actually start deporting the millions of people and how they would do it. Administration officials expected that a president from either party would be unlikely to take away benefits that already have been granted.

The action represented a reversal for Obama who, under pressure from immigration advocates to stem deportations, had insisted he couldn’t implement some of the same immigration reforms he will now sign.

In a Telemundo interview in September 2013, for example, Obama said that if he were to broaden the exception he made in 2012 for the children of undocumented immigrants, “then essentially, I would be ignoring the law in a way that I think would be very difficult to defend legally.”

White House press secretary Josh Earnest said earlier this week that Obama had since asked his team for a review of existing immigration law to see “what authority he did have and to ensure that we were, sort of, leaving no stone unturned.”

Obama and his aides insisted Thursday that the president was doing what many of his predecessors had done.

“The actions I’m taking are not only lawful, they’re the kinds of actions taken by every single Republican president and every Democratic president for the past half-century,” he said.

A roadblock for opponents

Let it be known, if there is one thing that Fresno State center Bego Faz Davalos enjoys, it is jumping up at just the right time and swatting the basketball to preserve her team’s lead.

At 6 feet 3 inches tall, the tallest ‘Dog on the court has asserted that ability. On Wednesday, the redshirt freshman blocked seven shots, which is more than a Bulldog had in a single game all last year.

That is just one statistic. She also posted a double-double in Fresno State’s victory over the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors with 19 points and 14 rebounds.

And she does it with a smile. With a big grin, she emphasizes that her gameplay is all in good fun.

“My personality doesn’t change during games,” she said. “I just enjoy it.”

Add a fresh head coach and staff, her transition from the bench to the court has been easy.

With a strong team behind her, and she is excited for what will happens in the future.

“It’s amazing,” she said. “I love my new teammates and coaches. I just love the new en-

vironment we’re playing in.”

Faz Davalos, who sat in her first year of eligibility, used the extra time to pick up on her English and hone her basketball fundamentals.

“I didn’t know English, so it was confusing,” she said. “So, I decided to redshirt. I wanted to pick up my English in classes and get stronger.”

During her year, she improved her technique and approach on the court. One part the coaches worked on was her shooting – which has proven effective this year. She has averaged a double-double so far: 11 points and 10 rebounds.

And while defending inside the paint, she remains mindful of her technique.

“I need to keep working on fouls,” she said.

Then she held her hands up. “It’s more physical, so when [the opponents] come to me, I just have to do this.”

With the Bulldogs ready to head to Los Angeles – and a little more than a month before conference play begins – Faz Davalos is not focused on trying to lead the conference in blocks. Nor is she trying to be the face of the program.

Instead, she says, there is still a lot to learn.

“We have really good seniors, such as Alex Sheedy,” she said. “I just want to learn from them.”

Coming off a bye week with full control of its destiny, the Fresno State football team will travel to Reno to take on the Wolf Pack for a Week 13 Mountain West showdown that will determine its faith.

“The playoffs have begun for us,” Bulldogs head coach Tim DeRuyter said. “Each week, we face an elimination game. We were up for the test last time, and we know that the path to the Mountain West Championship goes through Reno.”

Senior quarterback and four-year starter Cody Fajardo leads the Wolf Pack (6-4, 3-3 MW). The dual-threat quarterback ranks second on the team in rushing, with 689 yards on 129 carries for a average of 5.3 yards including 10 scores.

Fajardo’s running ability makes him unpredictable, which poses a problem for defenders. The added dimension gives the offense an advantage, as it allows him to escape the pocket when needed to evade pressure and gain additional yardage.

“He presents a lot of challenges with being the dual-threat quarterback that he is,” free safety Derron Smith said. “Every time he drops back, he has the option to run or throw the ball. He’s definitely difficult to defend, but like coach DeRuyter said you have to have eye discipline.”

Behind the 6-foot-2, 215-pound dual-threat quarterback, Nevada runs an option-based offense while utilizing a pistol formation that racks up an average of 194.7 yards on the ground, good enough for fifth in the Mountain West.

“They run the option game well,” senior nose guard Tyeler Davison said. “They’re going to try to pound the rock and throw

it over the top when they get the chance. I don’t think we’re going to see anything too different from what we’ve been seeing them do to other teams throughout the year, but we’ll see how that changes.”

Losses by both Nevada and San Diego State last week, along with the 38-24 win over San Jose State two weeks ago, are factors that contributed to set the Bulldogs in this unique scenario.

“It’s a little different,” DeRuyter said.

“I think back three weeks ago how poor we played and how bad we felt to think that a couple weeks later, we’re in a position where the path to the Mountain West Championship game is in our hands. We can control our destiny by winning out. It’s a heck of a testament to our seniors and their leadership.

“They kept the guys in the boat and kept our guys progressing. It also speaks to what we’ve spoken about since summer. There’s

a ton of parity in this league. There are good coaches, really good players and on any given Saturday, anybody can beat anybody.

Obviously, it’s played itself out this year.”

A victory in Saturday’s conference matchup would break the three-way tie between Nevada, the Bulldogs and San Diego State. The ‘Dogs would lead the West Division, since they already hold the tie-breaker over the Aztecs. So realistically, if the Bulldogs win their next two games, they will earn a spot in the conference title game.

However, they are not getting caught up in the scenario. Instead they are sticking with the mentality of going 1-0 each week.

“We can’t think too far ahead right now,” Davison said. “We just need to take things one day at a time, one game at a time and do everything we can to win. We need to worry about this game that we have coming up and not think past that.”

In its win Wednesday night, the Fresno State women’s basketball team relied on an aggressive presence led by the tandem of forward Alex Sheedy and center Bego Faz Davalos.

Both combined for 39 points – over half of the amount needed for Fresno State’s 65-36 victory over the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors Wednesday night at the Save Mart Center.

“I thought we started out of the gates pretty good,” said Fresno State head coach Jaime White. “Obviously, Alex and Bego did a good job. We challenged Bego with running the floor a little bit more and I think she did that about 90 percent of the time tonight.”

The ‘Dogs got off to a fast start when Sheedy made the opening two buckets followed by a layup by Faz Davalos.

Later in the opening frame, the ‘Dogs went on a 12-2 run.

The ‘Dogs struggled in 3-point shooting. Out of 17 attempts, only Sheedy and Natascha Hartvich made their shots – two apiece.

Ball control was a strong point for the ‘Dogs, as they only had one turnover in the first half. However, the ‘Dogs struggled with shooting, especially in the second half. In the first stanza, Fresno State was 18 of 41 from the field (43.9 percent). After the intermission, it was 9 of 27 (33.3 percent).

“We started to run some of our quicks and get some reps on different things that we needed to work on,” White said after Thursday’s practice. “All of a sudden, that makes you start thinking a little bit more, and I think that’s where that dip came in.”

The bench saw some playing time, as Toni Smith led the reserves with eight points. Each of the active bench players was in the double-digits in minutes played.

“For us, it’s important that everyone gets their feet wet,” White said. “It’s not always the easiest coaching-wise, but that’s what these games are for.”

Time for USC On Saturday, the ‘Dogs will visit the USC Women of Troy in a nonconference battle. Last season, Fresno State fell at home 63-54. All time, USC leads the series 6-5.

“We played [the Women of Troy] well last year,” White said, “so we’ve watched that game. They’re probably a little more athletic this year. They do have some new kids, but we’re going to be up against probably a Top-25 team.”

The Women of Troy, led by second-year head coach Cynthia Cooper-Dyke, are coming off a NCAA Tournament appearance after winning the Pac-12 Championship over Stanford.

Currently, they are 1-1 and will visit Long Beach State on Friday before hosting the ‘Dogs.

The Fresno State men’s hoops team (1-2) dropped its second game of the season 73-59 to the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks Thursday evening in Flagstaff, Arizona.

Behind senior guard Aaseem Dixon’s game-high 30 points and 7-of-9 shooting from behind the arc, the Lumberjacks (1-2) earned their first win of the year.

“He was a huge difference,” Fresno State head coach Rodney Terry said of Dixon’s performance. “Any time you let a guy score 20 points in a half, it causes a problem for you. We have to do a better job at guarding. It’s on our defense and obviously we have to get better in that area.”

The Lumberjacks shot 59 percent in the first half and built a 16-point advantage after the first period.

NAU continued its momentum coming out of the locker room and even increased its lead to as much as 24.

A duo of players got in double digits for the Bulldogs led by junior guard Julien Lewis’ 12 points. Guard Marvelle Harris and forward Karachi Edo each tallied 11.

“I think our team chemistry is going to be a work in progress over the course of the year, just based on a number of different factors that we’ve had to start the year,” Terry said.

“We just have to keep playing and find a way to be successful.”

After the 93-55 blowout win in Monday’s home opener over Bristol University, the Bulldogs were unable to keep the momentum heading into Thursday night. Standout second-year guard/forward Paul Watson was among those who failed to find consistency shooting the ball for Fresno State.

This was especially after collecting a game-high 28 points in Monday’s win. The sophomore shot 0-of-8 and scored just four points, all coming on free throws.

“When you’re not making shots, you have to affect the game in other ways,” Terry said. “I don’t want him to be a guy that has to live and die by his jump shot. I want him to be a guy that’s active on both ends of the floor.”

Fresno State was once again without junior starting point guard Cezar Guerrero. He will miss the remainder of the fall semester due to administrative issues. Last season Guerrero averaged 13.1 points per game for the Bulldogs while appearing in all 39 games.

“I said to our guys that you don’t have time to hang your head or feel sorry for yourself right now,” Terry said. “We have to keep battling right now, we have to get better guard play, and guys have to work the game for 40 minutes. We have to continue to buy in on defense and compete on another level.”

The ‘Dogs will now head to Estero, Florida, for the 2014 Gulf Coast Showcase, a three-day tournament that starts Monday. Then they come home to host the Cal Bears on Nov. 30.
