The ‘Give a Gobbler’ drive provides turkeys for struggling families Via University Communications Fresno State’s sixth annual Give a Gobbler campaign will provide studentproduced holiday turkeys for struggling families through the Community Food Bank, Poverello House and Bulldog Pantry, a student-run food bank serving university neighbors. Animal science students in the Jordan College of Agriculture Sciences and Technology, under the direction of Michelle Ganci, an animal science professor, raise turkeys on the campus farm. Students participate in all aspects of getting turkeys ready for market – feeding, environmental management and health care. The poultry is processed and packaged by Zacky Far ms and sold at the student-run Rue and Gwen Gibson Farm Market on campus for $1.49 per pound. Each frozen bird typiSee GOBBLER, Page 3

Fresno State held a press conference Tuesday in response to a report published by Business Insider which stated that Fresno State was ranked 19 on the most dangerous campuses list. Fresno State Police Chief Jim Watson was a member of the panel helped clarify the reporting process and how Fresno State is working to alleviate campus crime.

Fresno State listed 19 on top 25 most-dangerous campuses By Haley Lambert The Collegian Fresno State has been ranked among the likes of UCLA and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but not for academics. Business Insider listed Fresno State 19 of 25 schools recognized for the number of crimes perpetrated on campus. Between 2008 and 2011, Fresno State police reported 413 property crimes and 12 violent crimes were report. In compiling the list, Business Insider averaged FBI crime data from 2008 to 2011. This FBI data only accounts for

schools with more than 10,000 students. Violent crimes and property crimes were categorized separately, but when violent crimes were counted they carried a weighted value four times higher than property crimes. The crime reports are voluntarily sent to the FBI, and according to the Business Insider’s article many schools do not participate in the program. For some schools, the campus police’s jurisdiction runs into urban areas around the schools. Fresno State’s police department operates around the school’s perimeter but also takes calls in the neighborhoods and apartments

Fresno State also took home coveted individual awards: Grant Mason, a senior philosophy and political science double major; as lead plaintiff counsel; Shanna Hesketh, a senior criminology/ law enforcement major, as lead defense counsel; and Jess Smith, a senior political science major, for his witness performance. Attorney coach and faculty adviser Gordon M. Park of the Fresno-based law firm McCormick Barstow accompanied the eight students Nov. 9-12 to Tennessee. The other team members are senior economics major Alexandra Larralde, senior criminology major Ashley Eggleston, junior biology major Simone Leighty, sophomore pre-psychology major, Emily Brisky and senior criminology major Hailey Bonds. The Fresno State Mock Trial team was founded in 2005, by criminology professor and lawyer Harvey Wallace, who died in 2007, and Park. Students make over local restaurant; re-launch party today Via University Communications Fresno State Culinology, dietetics and food science students will unveil their makeover of Jimy Wen’s Asian Restaurant at 6 p.m. today with a relaunch party at the restaurant, 7065 N. Cedar Ave. in Fresno. Students in a food system management class taught by Dr. Klaus Te n b e r g e n , a p r o f e s s o r i n t h e De par tment of Food Science and Nutrition at Fresno State, will present their semester project fashioned in the style of Food Network’s “Restaurant: Impossible,” where an eatery is re-made in two days.
