THE ELEPHANTS’ STAMPEDE Republican Party takes over both the Senate and House of Representatives By Jesse Franz
@JesseOfTheNews Republicans now control both houses of Congress as they gained at least 7 seats and control of the Senate and tightened
their grasp on the House. While most experts predicted a Republican power swing, few models had such drastic gains for the party. In every competitive race, excluding New Hampshire, the Democratic senatorial can-
didate lost leading to big gains for Republicans. Fresno City Council president Steve Brandau, w ho w as e le cte d w it h strong Tea Party support in 2012, said that the Republican win gives the party a bigger opportunity
to block the Obama administration’s agenda. “It’s fantastic. It’s the best news I’ve heard in a long time,” Brandau said. “I think we can look forward to blocking a lot more

@JesseOfTheNews California’s 16th Congressional District In what could cap off a disastrous election night for Democrats, incumbent Jim Costa (D) is down to challenger Johnny Tacherra (R) in what could be a blind-side victory for Republicans in the Central Valley. Costa, the lone Democrat representing the Valley in Congress, was expected to have a cake walk into re-election. However, following the national trend, this race could be bad news for an already suffering Democratic party. Still too close to call as of midnight Wednesday, the race may come down to late-counted provisional ballots and a possible recount. Costa said that he was confident that ballots counted later in the night would push him over the edge, according to ABC 30. However, as of midnight he was down 49.5 percent to Tacherra’s 50.5 percent with 100 percent of precincts reporting.

As of midnight Tuesday, with 85 percent of the vote in, Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin trailed Democrat Betty Yee in her bid for California state controller. The results showed Yee with 52 percent of the vote and Swearengin with 48 percent. Swearengin spoke to her supporters, family and friends around 8 p.m. The event took place at the home of Fresno State
Board of Governors member Kristine Walter. “I’m just so thankful for all of the support that we gathered around the state, through small business owners, family, friends — so many people around California,” she said. “Every major newspaper around the state — almost every major newspaper has endorsed our candidacy. It’s been a very rewarding experience and I’m grateful to be at this stage.”
