ROLLING WITH THE PUNCHES Fresno State won an instant classic against Boise State at Bulldog Stadium last year, 41-40. But the series, which will take a two-year regular-season hiatus, hasn’t always been competitive. Both teams are fighting to keep their Mountain West championship hopes alive.

By Daniel Leon | @DanLeon25 n Friday, the Bulldogs will have an interesting challenge ahead of them, as they travel to a place where they haven’t won in 30

years. Fresno State (3-4, 2-1 Mountain West) will look to retain the Milk Can Friday when it goes on the road to square off against longtime rival Boise State (4-2, 2-1 MW) on the famous blue turf. Last year’s meeting between the two featured a thriller that came down to the last play, resulting in the Bulldogs edging the Broncos 41-40 at Bulldog Stadium. That put an end to Fresno State’s seven-game losing streak against Boise State. It will also mark the 17th matchup in

the rivalry. Boise State leads the series 11-5 and is 6-1 when hosting. Friday’s meeting will also be the last time the Bulldogs and Broncos meet until the 2017 season. “Boise Week is always a big week around here,” Fresno State head coach Tim DeRuyter said, “with [Boise State] being a conference opponent and being picked to win its side of the conference. We know it’s going to be a difficult chore going up against a very well-coached and very talented team. We have to play more efficiently than we did last week in order to get it done against a really good Boise State team.”

Local and national Hispanic leaders, including California Congressman David Valadao, spoke to students Thursday morning in

the Fresno State’s Satellite Student Union as part of aCongressional Hispanic Leadership Institute (CHLI) hosted conference. The discussions focused on jobs, immigration and other topics affecting the Latino community.

CHLI, founded in 2003 in Washington, D.C., is committed to “fostering a broad awareness of the diversity of thought, heritage, interests and views of Americans of Hispanic and Portuguese descent,” according to its website. The organization invited re-

gional leaders to speak to Central Valley students – including politicians, business-owners and corporate managers. Valadao, who is running for re-election in the 21st Congres-

A tentative contract agreement has been reached that would increase salaries and address workload concerns for California State University faculty. The agreement with the California Faculty Association, the union that represents more than 23,000 within the CSU system, was announced Thursday in a news release. “As we approach the next year with limited resources and increased expectations at state and federal levels for increased outcomes, we have this agreement as the foundation on which to build a bright future for our students who deserve the highest-quality education programs in the state,” said CSU Chancellor Timothy White in a news release. The agreement, which would replace the current contract that expired in June, would be in effect through 2017. Although the agreement faces two votes before it can be implemented – from the CFA membership and CSU board of trustees – it addresses several of the union’s sticking points involving salary and workload.
