The Department of Agriculture through the Philippine Rural Development Project (DA-PRDP) recently turned over the 1 km farm-tomarket road (FMR) project amounting to PhP 9 million pesos to the Local Government Unit of Kitcharao, Agusan del Norte. The concrete farm-to-market road from Barangay Gamoton to Lake Mainit covers 280 hectares of influence area would benefit at least 900 farmers or more than 2000 residents including the indigenous people in the area.

“We’ve been waiting and hoping for this road. Now, our dream is already a reality. This will surely open more opportunities for our people especially to our rice farmers,” said Mayor Aristotle Montante. Rice covers most of the area which is its main commodity. “Our place cannot be accessed through any motorized vehicle before. We were having a hard time incurring a bigger cost for transferring our commodity. Now, we are encouraged to plant more rice and cultivate our

idle land since there’s already a concrete road”, said Emma Alvarez, a rice farmer. The FMR in the locality not just eases the transportation of goods, but it also improves the mobility of people and services. The concrete road also provides smooth access to basic social services such as schools and health centers. PRDP aims to put in place climate resilient FMRs, bridges, communal irrigation and potable water systems.

Aggie Reviews Its Modernization Plan

by Fretcher Magatao

The Department of Agriculture Caraga headed by Regional Director Renato Manantan reviews its Agriculture and Fisheries Modernization Plan (AFMP) for 2011– 2017 with agricultural stakeholders in the region to prepare for the formulation of next AFMP. “All of us must coordinate to create a profound AFMP. Making a review of the current plan would guide us on the things that needed to be improved,” said Manantan. “Our plan should not only be limited for six years, but we should also plan beyond,” he added. Manantan highlighted that the plans for the region should be a direction and a guide for the actions to be taken in the LGUs and the regional office. “The President has given his commitment to agriculture which is also the commitment of the vSecretary, let’s work hand in hand for these things to be realized,” he added. The results of the assessment will be used as inputs to the formulation of new AFMP planning, programming and budgeting process which would serve as a blueprint for the future of agriculture and fishery sector.

The stakeholders’ consultation which was facilitated by Philippine Rural Development Project (PRDP) in the region also aims to assess the targets against its results with the help of the Department’s Banner Program focal persons. “The interventions given by the Department has been helpful for the achievement of sustainable agriculture in the region, some of the desired results have been reached, but there are still others that need to

improve,” said Jodel Tabada, OIC Deputy Project Director. AFMP has been created to increase the resilience of agriculture communities through the development of climatesensitive technologies, establishment of climate-resilient agricultural infrastructure and climate-responsive food production systems, and provision of support services to the most vulnerable communities.
