Health and Fitness One of the most obvious benefits children will acquire from their youth group is a good amount of healthy exercise due to the style of games that are frequently played. In a society where children are often not given the opportunity to participate in sports, the opportunity to let off steam and to get regular exercise is undoubtedly a real and important benefit.

Soccer

Grades K-3 M/W 6:00 – 6:45 p.m. This program teaches all the basics of soccer — dribbling, passing, receiving, shooting and everything in between. It is well-suited to the first-time player, while still being fun and engaging for kids who already have soccer experience. Kids will begin playing small-sided scrimmages where they will learn more about teamwork and playing as part of a group. Our instructors keep the atmosphere fun, friendly and noncompetitive. Activity # Dates Fee 382203-1 Jun 20 – Jul 13 $34 382203-2 Jul 25– Aug 17 $39 No class on Monday, July 4th.

W

Youth activities have been part of the fabric of many communities for decades and listed below are just a few of the benefits.

Beginning Tennis Lessons Grades 1-6 Tuesdays 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. Join us on Tuesday evenings at the Commons Park tennis courts to get a jump on summer and learn the rules and skills of this life-long sport. Hitting the ball, volleys, forehand, backhand strokes and game rules will be taught. Lessons are held on the lower courts at the north end of Commons Park. Min/max: 4/8. Activity # Dates Fee 382302-1 Jun 21 – Jul 12 $30 382302-2 Jul 26– Aug 16 $35 No class on Tuesday, July 5th.

Teamwork Another of the benefits children can acquire is the ability to work in a team. Many youth activities will include team games or events where older and younger children mix, and there is a need for each child to work as part of the team in some capacity. Again, this is an important skill to learn, as it stands children in good stead for future life, whether in education, sports or an office-based situation. A related benefit is the responsibility children can be given in youth groups, which teaches them the skill of leadership; again, this can be put to use in any number of contexts later in life.

2016 Spring/Summer Programs Springbrook Nature Center is Building a Brighter Future - Mike Maher

Construction of an all new Springbrook Nature Center building is well underway and is expected to open to the public on July 30th. The nature center features complete renovation of the existing 5,000 square foot building and an 8,000 square foot addition. The completed education center will feature all new exhibits, expanded classrooms, beautiful rental spaces, modern visitor amenities and inviting areas with stunning views into nature. The building will serve as a model of sustainable design and includes a number of features to reduce energy consumption and reduce environmental impact: • Patterned glass specially designed to reduce bird strikes • A geothermal heating and cooling system that uses deep underground wells to moderate air temperature • LED lighting throughout the building that uses about 15% as much energy as traditional incandescent lighting • High quality insulation and triple pane glass in much of the building • Rain gardens and permeable pavement to reduce storm water runoff • A comprehensive recycling and organics collection program to reduce waste. As we begin operation of the new nature center building, we are thrilled to launch all new programs for visiting schools, expanded public programming and innovative ways to engage visitors with interactive learning experiences. Planning is also underway to fund and construct future improvements such as a nature-based play space, community amphitheater and picnic pavilion. We are excited to offer our popular summer camp program for students ages 5-12. These day-long camps provide an immersive environment where kids will feel a sense of adventure and discovery as they begin a life-long journey of appreciation for nature. Our camp schedule has been planned to offer a convenient option for working parents looking for enriching summer camps for their children. I offer my sincere thanks to all of our City of Fridley residents for supporting Springbrook Nature Center to create a world class education and recreation site available for all to enjoy. Please visit springbrooknaturecenter.org for the latest updates on construction, upcoming programs or to find out how to help us build a brighter future for our community.
