Tobacco-Free Parks

The Fridley Parks and Recreation Commission approved a policy in 2011 prohibiting the use of tobacco products in City parks and parking lots. They believe that tobacco use is unhealthy and has unhealthy impacts on others. Since City parks are established to allow opportunity for healthy activities, they concluded that tobacco usage in parks is inconsistent with this purpose.

Park Shelter Permits

The Parks & Recreation Department issues park facility permits to groups wishing to use picnic shelters at Flanery Park, Commons Park or Moore Lake Beach. To reserve a park shelter, please request a Rental Application form from the Recreation office. Upon approval of the request, a park permit will be issued. For fee information call 763-572-3570.

Recreational fires also have the following requirements: • Burning shall be prohibited between the hours of 12:00 (midnight) and 9:00 a.m. during any day of the week. • Only clean wood or charcoal may be burned. No burning of trash, leaves or brush is allowed. "Wood" means dry clean fuel only such as twigs, branches, limbs, commercially made logs for heating, charcoal, cord wood or untreated lumber. • The fire shall not exceed three feet in diameter and a flame height of approximately two feet and has had the ground five feet from the base of the fire cleared of all combustible material. • The fire must not be conducted within twenty-five feet of a structure or combustible material. This distance may be reduced to within fifteen feet of a structure or combustible material when contained in an outdoor fireplace* or container approved by the Fire Chief. • Recreational fires are not permitted on windy days when smoke may create a nuisance. • The fire should be constantly attended by an adult person knowledgeable in the use of fire extinguishing equipment and an adult attendant supervises the fire until the fire has been totally extinguished. • Fire extinguishing equipment such as a fire extinguisher, garden hose, water filled buckets, shovel or similar means to smother the fire must be readily available. • Be a good neighbor. Ask your neighbor if they have any objection to your recreation fire, and let them know you won't have a fire if any smoke would go into their property. A Message from Springbrook Nature Center Director Hundreds of Springbrook supporters gathered together on July 30th to celebrate the grand opening of the Nature Center’s all new interpretive center. This beautiful new facility is now open 7 days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is the perfect place for the Fridley community to learn, gather and explore nature.

We are thrilled to be back open to the public, serving all of you with engaging events and programs. In addition to an all new offering of school field trips, we look forward to expanding our public programs and services over time and strive to offer something for everyone in our community. Feel free to reach out to me at Mike.Maher@FridleyMN. gov at any time with questions, comments or suggestions. - Mike Maher

I would like to extend an invitation to everyone in Fridley to visit the Nature Center. The new facility features exciting exhibits, wonderful amenities, incredible views into nature and a versatile multipurpose space that serves as classrooms and a community gathering room suitable for events and receptions. In addition to the opening of the new interpretive center, we have made many improvements to our park and trails. A new bridge was installed this spring in the northwest corner of the park to replace a badly deteriorated boardwalk. Our well-known floating boardwalk was also replaced and provides a unique experience to walk atop the water and get close to frogs, turtles, red-winged blackbirds and much more.

Thursday October 6 What better place to go exploring for ghosts than in the city of Anoka, Halloween Capital of the World? Stories abound in Anoka of odd happenings and eerie encounters. There is a house where the rocking chair rocks with no one sitting in it. Our costumed tour guides will take you on a walk through historic neighborhoods of Anoka. You’ll view (from the outside) homes and businesses that have been privy to some unexplained events, while your guide shares real stories that have been brought to the Anoka county historical society by the people who live and work in these buildings. Sixty percent history, forty percent folklore; these stories are just part of the fun you will experience on your ghosts of Anoka tour. Pick-up and drop-off at the Fridley community center patio. Senior Health & Wellness Activities Did you know

Exercise and physical activity are among the healthiest things you can do for yourself, but some older adults are reluctant to exercise. They may be afraid that exercise will be too strenuous, or that physical activity will harm them. Research from the NIH shows that actually the opposite is true: Exercise is safe for people of all age groups. Older adults hurt their health far more by not exercising than by exercising.

Did You Know

Hopefully you noticed something new in this edition of the Parks and Recreation brochure. We have provided information that demonstrates the benefits of the Parks and Recreation services offered to the residents of Fridley. These benefits could range from addressing health and wellness to increasing economic activity, or from ensuring environmental sustainability to fostering community development. This information is identified with the Did You Know? logo throughout the brochure. Here are a couple examples to get you started: • Recreation and leisure activities can help alleviate depression. Participating in recreation activities provides experiences to look forward to and enjoy. Recreation activities also reduce alienation, loneliness and isolation, all of which contribute to depression. • Stress reduction through recreation can come from group activities that strengthen social ties and the calming effects of desirable outdoor settings. All-inall, being more relaxed promotes improved work performance, better social interactions, and a general sense of well being, all of which reduce stress. • Positive self-esteem and self-image can be achieved through lifestyle choices by selecting recreation activities that contribute to a feeling of control over one’s life. Increasing our skill levels and success at a recreation activity builds our self-confidence and esteem which in turn affects other facets of our lives, such as family and work. Studies have shown that active participation in recreational activities helps to improve our self-worth.

• Self-expression and identity affirmation is positively reinforced through participation in recreation activities. Recreation helps us explore our inner spirit and sense of self, creating new behaviors and a new identity. It is becoming more common to identify with the activities we participate in, seeing ourselves as ‘hikers’, ‘swimmers’ or ‘soccer players’, rather than with the positions we hold at work. • Recreation brings neighbors together, encourages safer, cleaner neighborhoods and creates a livelier community atmosphere. Parks and recreational facilities also help improve a community’s image, socioeconomic status and enhance the area’s desirability. • Well maintained parks and recreation facilities help reduce crime in a community. The presence of park users in and around the facilities is an excellent deterrent. Low crime rates increase property values and help residents feel secure.

The Fridley Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to delivering parks and recreation services that improve the quality of life in our city. We offer enrichment programs, social opportunities and instructional classes for all ages. Need a good workout? Try out the fitness programs held at the Fridley Community Center (pages 16-17). Need something for your child to do after-school? See what we offer elementary kids (pages 5-6) or kids in grades 5-8 (pages 9-10). Finally, our recreation opportunities include programs for kids as young as 3 (page 4) to adults 55+ (pages 19-24).
