VANQUISH YACHTS / WELCOME

WELCOME TO THIS THIRD EDITION OF

VANQUISH LIFESTYLE

MAGAZINE.

L

ooking back on the last two issues, you can see what tremendous progress Vanquish Yachts is making within the unique driver’s boats sector of the market that we serve. There are more models available in more different formats and a wider range of sizes than ever. As I write this we’re working on two stunning new models, both sold to Vanquish clients looking to push the window of innovation and take full advantage of our unrivalled ability to customise. You can read more about the thinking behind and attributes of the VQ65 and VQ58 in this magazine, but the fact that we are creating a 65-footer capable of 70 knots of speed speaks volumes for our ambitious approach. I have to add here that it is the incredible creativity and love of pleasure that we see among Vanquish clients which inspires us to keep taking this brand to the next level. Their desire to have the best aluminium powerboat money can buy – and the maximum possible pleasure out on the water – drives myself and my team to constantly up the ante in terms of added value. Teamwork is at the heart of Vanquish Yachts. Our network of specialised dealers continues to expand, with the latest additions being in bour, Menorca and Antibes. Another example is the close cooperation with Guido de Groot and his expert designers, allowing us to bring superyacht standards of style, comfort and looks to our latest boats. I would like to express my thanks to Guido for his commitment and skills. Teamwork of a different kind is happening behind the scenes thanks to the partnership we signed in early 2018 with the TransEquity Network. This agreement has enabled us to significantly enhance our financial, commercial and management capacity. Our company and brand has grown quickly over the past five years and I saw that we could use some extra capacity in terms of management. Additional investment is useful too and has allowed Vanquish to focus on further optimising our designs, technology and production. We have already built our all-aluminium speed machines for demanding individuals in many European sailing hotspots, with the Balearics being a particular favourite haunt of Vanquish owners. We’ve also taken an impressive number of orders from the United States over recent times. As the article on page 12 explains, the new partnership with TransEquity enables us to further develop our proposition and expand into larger motoryachts and new parts of the world. I hope you too will become part of the Vanquish family… Please read this magazine, let your imagination soar and give me a call!

U

NIQUE Building on dedicated market research, the Vanqraft 16 places next-generation technology at the service of its owners. Integrating elegant lines from Guido de Groot Design and naval architecture from Studio Delta, it has the same elegant appearance as its larger siblings, naturally fitting within the Vanquish family in terms of look & feel. It makes the most of all the trademark characteristics of Vanquish – excellent manoeuvrability, unprecedented comfort (especially when compared to other water scooters), advanced Dutch workmanship and state-of-the-art technology – while thoroughly embodying its own unique charisma. DYNAMIC Tom Steentjes’ inspired brief was realised in the form of a remarkable craft and the market was quick to show interest: we sold six Vanqraft 16s before the first one was even launched. The buyers saw that their trust in the model’s uncompromising concept and execution was well deserved during test drives, and the publicity tour during the following spring in the south of France and the Balearic Islands, which saw the Vanqraft 16 turn heads in every port.

VANQUISH

AS YOU LIKE IT As our customers know, customisation is the name of the game at Vanquish Yachts, and the Vanqraft 16 is no exception – quite the contrary. Despite its relatively small size, the model can be tailored to suit anything your heart desires. The interior can be built with a wide range of elements and the colour can be adapted to suit that of the mothership if used as a tender. And the Vanqraft 16 can sail in reverse, optimising flexibility. FUN AND GAMES Integrated flat into the hull, the Vanqraft 16’s jet drive makes it ideal as a tender for a superyacht. We can build a dedicated tender garage with special mounts on any of our models from the VQ75 and above. Moreover, the Vanqraft 16 is a perfect complement for a wide range of watersports toys, such as wakeboards, banana boats and water skis. NEXT-LEVEL POWER The standard Vanqraft 16 is propelled by a powerful 200 hp Yamaha 1.8 L jet engine, which lets it develop an impressive 40 knots of speed. Famous for unsurpassed reliability and convenience, this super successful engine has already sold in the tens of thousands. The universal availability of Yamaha service points across the world means that parts can be received and repairs easily carried out anywhere. The Vanqraft 16 is also available in a Veloce configuration, which delivers an imposing tempo of more than 50 knots. 

HOTEL / MENORCA

Torralbenc

Torralbenc; Menorca’s hide away

Scan this code to see the website.

Menorca, the second largest of the Balearic Islands, has long been overshadowed by its larger sister island, Mallorca, and the much smaller Ibiza which has a notorious party-town reputation. However, in recent years, Menorca’s tourism has been undergoing a renaissance. Menorca’s large number of beaches with turquoise-coloured water -- more than the number of beaches in Mallorca and Ibiza combined -- is the number-one appeal for those who want nothing but to unwind.

B

outique hotel Torralbenc is a couple of miles inland in the south-east of the island, a 10-minute drive from the airport and 20 minutes from the capital Mahón. The location feels properly rural, however, as this former farm is surrounded by fields and newly-planted vineyards. You can drive anywhere on the island in less than an hour, or borrow bikes to cycle down to the beach and explore the coast. Traditional Menorcan dry-stone walls and olive trees set the tone for a series of white buildings dressed in natural tones and floaty fabrics. Stylishly smooth rather than full-on rustic, and on the smart side of the boho-ometer, Torralbenc is a masterclass in modern Mediterranean good taste. There is a 25-metre unchlorinated outdoor pool, and also a small gym and Natura Bissé spa. Yoga and Pilates classes are also available. There are 27 rooms distributed around the main house and several former stables or outhouses, all now transformed into light, airy spaces with beamed ceilings, chestnut furniture and sandstone floors. Paco Morales, one of Spain’s most interesting young chefs, is overseeing things and is present on a regular basis. At Torralbenc, guests can choose between his innovative creations or more traditional Menorcan dishes, or just go for a salad or locally-caught fish.

VANQUISH YACHTS / TRANSEQUITY NETWORK

Interview

Meet our new partners Q&A WITH JURGEN VAN OLPHEN FROM TRANSEQUITY NETWORK

I

n the spring of 2018, Vanquish Yachts entered a new partnership with the Dutch investment company TransEquity Network. This enables us to take our growing success in the market for bespoke driver’s boats to the next level, increasing our financial, commercial and management capacity. Vanquish director Tom Steentjes remains firmly at the helm of the yard as TransEquity Network managing partner Jurgen van Olphen explains in this exclusive interview. TELL US MORE ABOUT TRANSEQUITY NETWORK: WHAT SETS IT APART FROM OTHER INVESTORS? We are hands-on investors active since 2002. Our focus is on mid-sized companies with significant growth potential who are actively looking to accelerate that

VANQUISH

growth. While most of the companies we partner with are based in the Netherlands, they are all internationally active. Our role is to practically support the executive team in their strategy, marketing, financial and operational management. WHAT GIVES YOU THE ABILITY TO OFFER SUCH SUPPORT? The TransEquity Network team has extensive management experience in various companies. We are not ex-bankers – we are entrepreneurs with a rich understanding of how business works. Many companies encounter the same issues and the in-house expertise at TransEquity Network helps our partners grow.

| 12.

VANQUISH YACHTS / TRANSEQUITY NETWORK

WHY WERE YOU ATTRACTED TO WORKING WITH VANQUISH YACHTS? We look for companies that have the right fundamentals for the acceleration of growth. This relates to the company itself as well as the market in which it is operating. That’s what we see in Vanquish: the yard is only five years old and yet doing very well in growing its business. What’s really impressive is how Vanquish Yachts has established a strong position in the top segment of the sports boat market in a relatively short period. The company needed support for the next growth step, and that’s exactly what we can provide. THIS MUST BE A SOMEWHAT DIFFERENT PRODUCT THAN YOU ARE USED TO? Yes, that was another big attraction for us to invest in Vanquish Yachts. These spectacular driver’s boats are genuinely unique in the way that they combine awesome agility, supreme comfort and Dutch quality. The motoryacht market is constantly changing and always challenging – but when you see the results in their purest form, as is the case with a Vanquish boat, it is certainly an exciting proposition. This partnership with Vanquish Yachts allows TransEquity Network to be part of a luxury market with style. HOW DO YOU SEE THE FUTURE OF VANQUISH YACHTS? We hope to help make Vanquish a market leader in its segment worldwide. While Vanquish boats have been mainly sold in Europe since the yard opened in 2013, a successful start was made in the US at the end of 2017. We aim to expand sales via existing and new dealers in Europe and the US. Vanquish already has a number of dealers in Asia, Australia and New Zealand,

VANQUISH

and we expect to expand the business in those regions too. The initial focus in 2018 will be on expansion in Europe and the States, with the rest following in 2019. TO WHAT EXTENT WILL VANQUISH DIRECTOR TOM STEENTJES BE INVOLVED? Tom is the founder and inventor of the Vanquish brand. He is a true entrepreneur and had the vision to create the driver’s boats which have achieved so much recognition already. Because Tom is always looking for improvement and seeking innovations and development models, having him in place was a condition for the investment by TransEquity Network. He remains the sole director of Vanquish – we support him on the basis of added value, but Tom is the one running the company. IN WHAT WAYS ARE YOU ADDING VALUE? While Tom and his team are busy building boats and liaising with buyers and (prospective) dealers, we will work on a different level. TransEquity Network is currently responsible for the financial management and legal issues, and we will also support the company in terms of marketing, strategy and business planning. Managing growth requires more people and enhanced IT processes. By further professionalising the organisation, we will be able to expand the number of Vanquish boats which are sold and produced. ANY FINAL THOUGHTS? I recently travelled to the South of France with Tom to conclude business talks with a new dealer in that part of Europe. This is what we mean by hands-on support – TransEquity Network is not a faceless investor but a partner that is actively involved in taking Vanquish Yachts to the next level of success. 

VANQUISH YACHTS / VQ32 CUSTOM TENDER

VQ32 Custom Tender

A SUPERYACHT TENDER

LIKE NO OTHER. The capacity of Vanquish Yachts to build a superyacht tender to match our superb range of driver’s boats has been thoroughly proven with the launch of the first VQ32 Custom Tender. Built for a 58-metre yacht in Miami and launched in the spring of 2018, she is a test case example of a bespoke and perfectly fitting tender. Who’s next?

I

f you’re looking for the ultimate tender for your superyacht, you need look no further than the all-aluminium VQ32. As the first bespoke Custom Tender illustrates, this powerful people carrier is easy to customise in terms of on board facilities and to fit to the specifics of each particular garage. The tender perfectly suits the dimensions of the garage and the capacity of the lifting crane on the mothership, featuring a windscreen that can be lowered to reduce her profile. She has also been built in a way that permits her to be launched and docked both sideways and aft, and with more speed and convenience than any comparable tender. Up to 15 people can fit in the boat, which offers plenty of space, cosiness and freedom of movement in its

VANQUISH

layout. Her size and power make her perfectly suited to swimming and diving expeditions as well as comfortable trips to shore, and the handy swimming platform with stowable ladder and deck shower with hot water on board are ideal for the owners of the mothership, who are keen divers. The striking design unmistakeably marks her as a member of the Vanquish family, as do her incredible top speed of 44 knots made possible by twin 260 hp twin V6 diesel engines and her unrivalled agility, enhanced by a joystick for precise manoeuvring. As the VQ32 is built in aluminium, the most diverse owners’ needs can be met and the very latest gadgets installed on board. These kinds of smart solutions additionally demonstrate the flexibility and excellence of the Vanquish concept. 

THE VQ43 Mk2

CONTINUES TO BREAK RECORDS. The VQ43 Mk2, which we originally unveiled in the beginning of 2017, has been an unreserved success and we have sold many to a wide range of sailing hotspots around the world. While they all share the graceful look, raw power and refined aluminium construction that is the hallmark of Vanquish, each has been customised with her own particular style and feel.

A

L FRESCO DELIGHTS Guido de Groot’s daring design work on the VQ43 Mk2 methodically reflects the Vanquish philosophy in each of the VQ43 Mk2s. The remarkable interior comprises lots of luxury woods, furnishings, fabrics, leathers, upholstery and Corian worktops with designer taps. The large lounge area forward is a great place to relax and the spacious interior provides full standing headroom in both the cabin and bathroom/head. Each of the boats has been fully tailored to the tastes and requirements of her owners. We know that fun out on the water is a key component of the overall Vanquish experience, and the VQ43 Mk2 provides a wealth of al fresco delights for up to 16 people. The aft cockpit is a fabulous place to chill

VANQUISH

| 16.

while the boat is underway, and the foredeck offers tonnes of sunbathing, seating and lounging options at lower speeds and at anchor. Safety for kids – or adults who have already had a few! – is ensured by deep walkaround gangways. STATE-OF-THE-ART Other amazing features of this impressive boat include a smart joystick steering system which facilitates flexible manoeuvring when in harbour. A domotics system developed in close cooperation with the electronics experts at Raymarine permits easy digital switching between the many onboard facilities. But that’s not all – the double spray rail enhances the model’s streamlined appearance while also making it exceptionally dry considering its speed. We think the VQ43 Mk2

will keep you drier while underway than any comparable open boat on the market today. We also added a smart soft-top arrangement to provide shade at all speeds and a bimini that corresponds to the boat’s overall look and feel, making it an integral part of the design. The VQ43 Mk2 provides the best sailing characteristics in its class thanks to an ingenious underwater section, and can develop a top speed of around 40 knots – 50 knots in the Veloce version. It fully embodies everything the Vanquish brand stands for in terms of agility, acceleration and manoeuvring, as well as comfort, customisation options, quality and design. It is as well suited to long and leisurely sailing weekends as it is for adventurous day trips to secluded coves and islands. >>

EVOKING A LEGEND We helped bring a bit of history back to life with an owner in Monaco who requested a stunning Gulf Racing livery for his VQ43 Mk2. This iconic colour scheme dates back to the 1960s, when Henry Ford II tried and failed to buy Ferrari, and then decided he would do everything to break the Italian carmaker’s dominance of the Le Mans race instead. He succeeded in 1966 with the legendary Ford GT40 model, which took the top three spots. This was followed with huge successes in 1968 and 1969, now with the sponsorship of Gulf Oil. Gulf Oil’s iconic light blue and orange remains one of the most famous colour combinations in classic car racing, and we were proud to integrate it in a VQ43 Mk2 Gulf Racing model. It wasn’t as easy as you might think, however, due to the discreet presence of a third colour – a thin navy-blue stripe that separates the light blue and orange. But we managed just fine – and if you’re curious, the exact colour codes are Powder blue (PPG 12163), Topaz orange (PPG 60812) and Royal Blue (PPG 13126).

EXCLUSIVE BRANDING Another customised look we created for a VQ43 Mk2 represented BALR, a luxury lifestyle brand established in 2013 by football players Eljero Elia, Gregory van der Wiel and Demy de Zeeuw. To reflect this unique brand, the owners picked a special jet-black varnish in BALR style and a unique coating which helps the characteristic BALR brand logo stand out. The fabulous boat has her home in Ibiza – keep an eye out next time you go! 

BELLY TANKS / SPEED MACHINE

Speed machine

Belly Tanks:

The making of a legend and the need for speed A

nyone who has ever seen a belly tank vehicle will instantly recognise it as a dedicated speed machine. Ironically, the shapes were not initially designed for racing – as their name indicates, they were originally spare fuel tanks attached to the underside of aircraft. Having been extensively used during the Second World War, they were just the low-cost, easily available raw material to feed the post-war passion for speed that soon emerged on the dry lakes of California and Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats. Since many of the hot rodders who started setting new land speed records in the post-war period were returning GIs, they were familiar with belly tanks. Moreover, war surplus tanks were plentiful, cheap and aerodynamically ideal for the job. The first car made from a belly tank soon made its appearance on the dry lakes in California where the hot rodders initially converged, and it duly came to be called a lakester – a name that would stick for all cars made of a simple chassis with the wheels on the outside. Lakesters today mostly compete at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, another dry lake area.

SIMPLICITY AND INGENUITY The first lakester was made by Bill Burke of the legendary So-Cal Speed Shop during the late 1940s. Bill first had the idea of using a belly tank as an aerodynamic car body when he saw them on a barge on Guadalcanal in the Pacific during the war. He measured one of the tanks and could tell right away that an engine block would fit. “They’re a great example of hot rod ingenuity, to think that you could take a gas tank from an airplane and make a car out of it,” historian and NHRA Motorsports Museum curator Greg Sharp points out. Of course, a big part of the belly tank’s iconic nature is its simplicity. This is a torpedo dedicated entirely to speed, a blank canvas for the speed demon that lives within many of us. In a sense the belly tank is also a great leveller – as the shape cannot really be changed without creating something entirely different, the speed of the vehicle therefore depends largely on the engine and the skills of the driver. Although interest in belly tanks ebbed over the years following the 1950s, it has been enjoying something of a renaissance in the past decade. And it looks set to stay – after all, it’s hard to imagine a purer, more iconic and unadulterated monument to the need for speed. 

FLS MICROJET / SMALLEST JET

Jet aeroplane

A miniature miracle:

The world’s smallest jet Y

ou hear a lot about the world’s largest this and the world’s largest that – but, while big is beautiful, it can also be brash. None of the most impressive vehicles in the world are the largest in their category – a typical Vanquish yacht is rarely the largest boat in the marina. We wanted to think a step further and ask ourselves: What is the smallest, most elegant version of a vehicle? A jet aeroplane, for instance? The answer is the astounding FLS. The story of the smallest jet plane in the world started during the homebuilt aeroplane craze of the late 1960s. Entrepreneurial engineer Jim Bede designed the propeller-driven BD-5 as an affordable, easyto-build aircraft kit that would democratise flying among the masses. The jet-powered BD-5J followed in the 1970s, and quickly became iconic in the popular imagination thanks to several high-profile marketing campaigns and – not least – its appearance in 1983’s runaway hit Octopussy featuring the world’s favourite spy. This success did not suffice to save the company that built the BD-5, which was too far ahead of its time to thrive – most BD-5 kits were abandoned in hangars and garages by owners who found them too complex to build or too scary to fly. But the aircraft lost none of its appeal to hardcore fans,

VANQUISH

and in 1992 the concept was picked up by Ed & Richard Skeeter. They set up a company called BMT to update the model and start production again with the latest technology and safest construction principles. A COMPACT HEAVY-HITTER After several years of hard work and research, BMT came up with an improved model entitled FLS, which included several major improvements such as enhanced pitch stability, decreased air-frame fatigue, a lower stall speed, and an update of the flight instruments. Squeezed into an elegant frame with a length of 4 m and height of 1.75 m, and a wingspan of 5.1 metres, the FLS is powered by a Quantum Turbine System that offers a maximum speed of 515 km/h, a range of 370 km and a carrying capacity of 200 kg – not bad, considering the aeroplane itself weighs a mere 188 kg. Today, the FLS is used by the US army to practice targeting of guided cruise missiles, and is a much-loved guest at air shows all over the world. People are captivated by its miniature size and plucky appearance, and no one can resist the thrill of seeing this tiny one-person jet whizz overhead. A true triumph of the imagination, its intrepid spirit and elegant packaging prove that less is, without a doubt, often more. 

VQ45 OUTBOARD

ESPECIALLY FOR THE AMERICAN MARKET

Customisation is king… And for Vanquish that applies not only to building boats for individual clients but also when adapting our models for different parts of the world. The latest example of this philosophy in practice is the new VQ45 Outboard, which has been especially designed for the American market.

VANQUISH

| 30.

VANQUISH YACHTS / VQ45 OUTBOARD

W

e had received requests from a number of stateside clients to develop a version of our highly successful VQ43 Mk2 model that could be equipped with outboard engines. Taking this as our inspiration, the new VQ45 Outboard is a striking 13.6-metre sportsboat. You can choose between three or four outboard engines comprised of the brand of your choice.

VANQUISH

Whichever power package you choose for your driver’s boat, ease of manoeuvring is guaranteed by the smart joystick system. Simple access to the vessel is equally assured thanks to a smart side boarding system, and the VQ45 Outboard also comes with the many other attributes in terms of style and comfort that make each Vanquish boat a one-of-a-kind beauty. 

A PHENOMENAL OPEN SPORTS YACHT:

THE VQ48 Created in partnership with Guido de Groot Design, Wester Naval Architecture and Studio Delta, the 14.75-metre VQ48 has a characteristic look and feel which especially appeals to lovers of elegant cars. Launched a few years ago, this superlative model has been realised in many exemplars which have turned heads and inspired fantasies in many places around the world ever since.

G

RACE AND COMFORT With bold lines from the drawing tables of designer Guido de Groot, the VQ48 integrates the typical Vanquish Yachts luxury and feel: its lines and layout are inspired by previous models while retaining a distinctive and unique character of their own. The sensation of elegant comfort pervades every aspect of the boat and is evident among other things in the abundance of quality materials on board: most elements are handmade in aluminium, and there is very little plastic. The design resolutely focuses on useful space for socialising, such as parties, with 19 seating places in the standard configuration. Highlights include a large lounge sofa, bimini screens on carbon awnings and two

VANQUISH

specially developed helm seats. These features mean that the VQ48 is the consummate boat for day trips with a full party of guests. CLEVER DETAILS The VQ48 features many other brilliant innovations that are uncommon on similar boats. One is a submarine folding anchor system, which fits within the lines of the underwater hull so that no chain or winch are visible when at anchor. Lots of attention has also been given to limiting noise and vibrations. And the VQ48’s convenient, wellequipped galley was designed personally by famous Swiss TV chef RenÊ Schudel, who translated all his combined experience as a cook and boat owner into splendid function and layout. >>

POWER AND AGILITY Like all models in our range of driver’s boats, the VQ48 has a power and agility that are second to none – incredible speed and acceleration merge impeccably with superb responsiveness and fantastic seakeeping. The underwater segment and engine meet and surpass the most exacting contemporary standards. And as with other Vanquish models, the low weight places the VQ48 head and shoulders above similar boats in terms of manoeuvrability, fuel consumption and an extraordinary top speed in excess of 40 knots. The Veloce version boosts this to an even more impressive 50 knots.

UP TO YOU In good Vanquish tradition, the VQ48 can be tailored to a wide range of needs. One of the boats we have built was made for clients who had previously owned a VQ43, and who had the interior formed in a way that would allow the master cabin to be closed off from the head and galley when guests would be visiting over the day. They also had a rain shower installed into the ceiling to optimise the headroom in the cabin. What can we do for you with your VQ48? 

Using American console boats as a starting point, we created a new category of vessel that merges several distinct characteristics from a range of different types of boats suited to a variety of uses.

A

THRILLING HYBRID The VQ48 CC first saw the light of day when an American Vanquish fan chose to dispense with the movable outboard engines of a previous Vanquish model while retaining its overall look and feel. The new model was expanded to make space for a specially designed large swimming platform and 2x Volvo IPS 500 or 600 engines. Outboard engines naturally remain an option for the model. Suited equally to sports fishing trips and social sailing with family and friends, the 14.75-metre VQ48 CC is a dual-purpose, dual-console yacht. Its individual style is perfect for customers looking for waterborne adventure. The boat is characterised by the traditional Vanquish qualities of first-rate manoeuvrability, stunning design, and an almost infinite capacity for customisation. FUN AND COMFORT Fun on the water is the name of the game with the VQ48 CC. Ideal for nautical excursions with friends and family, its speed and stability make it a superb fast commuter to quickly move between fishing and diving locations. The underwater section of the vessel is designed especially with comfort and manoeuvrability in mind, and produces very little spray.

VANQUISH

The VQ48 CC features plenty of room for fishing gear and diving equipment, and extensive state-of-the-art equipment for snorkelling, diving, wakeboarding or sport fishing, such as two delightful sea bobs in a dedicated garage aft. It is also very well suited to cosy socialising: comfort on deck is assured throughout the day thanks to a protective T-top sunroof that extends both forward and aft with sun awnings over carbon tubes. ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES Those who prefer to chill rather than play will be equally at home on the VQ48 CC – it has space for up to 18 people on its spacious deck, which includes a wide walkaround deck for optimal accessibility, three sunbathing spots and gorgeous settees for hanging out, as well as a well-equipped galley and two fridges. The interior includes a luxurious cabin for two as well as a head with shower. The first VQ48 CC was enhanced through the addition of one of our extraordinary VQ16s outfitted in the same style, colours and materials. This illustrates the unlimited possibilities of customising Vanquish yachts. No matter what your wishes or preferences for appearance, function or layout, we will be happy to sit down and discuss them with you. One thing is certain: the end result will be sensational! 

he latest VQ54 will be superbly suited to longer trips. This model boat can be equipped with a wide range of drives and engines, and will provide luxurious seating or lying space for at least 23 people. UNPRECEDENTED The 16.56-metre VQ54 has a beam of 4.90 metres, creating an unprecedented wealth of open deck space. This has been used to great effect by the current owners, who have installed refrigerators, wine coolers, icemakers and various dining options, as well as a range of bimini systems for different levels of shade – two of them are used in the Caribbean while another is based in New York. Moreover, the model

is available with two or three cabins and can therefore meet a wide range of sailing needs. ULTIMATE Described by one owner as the ultimate party boat, the VQ54 is partly designed specifically to have lots of storage space, as evidenced by the Williams tender present on all four existing models, as well as the ample room for water scooters, diving equipment or water toys. The tender in particular is very handy for wakeboarding within safe reach of the mothership or conveniently getting to a quayside bistro or quiet cove. The doors of the tender garage open aft, making fora quick and easy launch and return.

EXHILARATING Equipped with twin engines and surface drives of your choice, the VQ54 has an exhilarating top speed of 45 knots – 50 in the Veloce version. Despite its length, the aluminium hull is very nimble and can accelerate at an impressive clip. The double spray rail keeps the occupants dry even at very high speeds, and the hull guarantees incomparable cruising comfort. Customisable to suit any owner’s needs in any port and any clime, the all-aluminium VQ54 fully embodies our philosophy of flexibility, stylishness, extravagance and power on the water. 

lage Keller beach is an attractive beach in one of the most beautiful areas of the French Riviera and a popular spot for wealthy yacht owners and celebrities. The private beach here in the Baie de la Garoupe offers a sheltered spot to enjoy the crystal clear turquoise water and the pristine white sand of the Côte d’Azur. Plage Keller, with its iconic yellow and white colour scheme, is one of a few private beaches in this area of Antibes, but remains the best beach for peoplewatching and mingling with the rich and famous.

VANQUISH

Loungers and umbrellas can be rented on the beach and, for those who want a bit more privacy, spots can be purchased on the pontoon which sits away from the main beach on the sea. From here, beach-goers can dive straight off the pontoon into the inviting Mediterranean waters, and are protected by the occasional visiting jellyfish by special floating nets. This is a very safe swimming spot and suitable for children. The attached beach restaurant (Le César) is one of the most popular nearby eateries with both locals and tourists. Serving fish, seafood and Provençale specialities, it is frequently praised for the high-quality food and service. Le César has a proper restaurant kitchen above its stunning beach-front location, allowing the chefs to offer gourmet cuisine rather than just beach bar food. It is busy at lunchtime, and also has a wonderful night time ambiance.

Traveling

A LUXURY SUITCASE

LIKE NO OTHER. I

n a world of conformity and mass production, it’s rare to find the kind of unique product that reflects your personality while embodying truly transcendent quality. A Dutch businessman dissatisfied with the briefcases and suitcases used during his frequent business trips decided to create what he couldn’t find, and gave the resulting luxury travel goods line his name. Henk luxury travel goods were born. The founder of the company brought together the finest designers and engineers in the world to create the finest hand baggage, with no expense spared in terms of effort, material or production technique. Ten years of research and development led to the creation of exceptionally light yet incredibly strong cases with an unrivalled appeal in terms of both functionality and aesthetics. Launched in Cannes in June 2004 by His Royal Highness Prince Albert of Monaco, Henk cases represent the ultimate in luxury travel. They are built in superb materials, including titanium, carbon fibre, select leathers and fine wood veneers, to quality standards that ensure they can last for generations. Designed in California by the world-famous agency frog design, Henk cases can be customised to an extraordinary degree to respond to the exacting needs of the hardest-to-please clients. Colours, company logos or family crests, or something as simple as initials, can all be integrated into the design.

Henk cases comprise many truly unique benefits. Four small integrated side wheels let them slide easily through crowded aisles, while the low centre of gravity, made possible by an advanced ergonomic study, gives an almost weightless feel. Raise the telescopic handle and two large wheels extend out of the case to enable easy mobility. The titanium wheels are smooth and silent when in use, retracting when the handle is lowered and the case needs to be stored or carried, keeping users clean. This patented system is only available with Henk products. Other nifty components include a central locking system which operates the anti-theft cable and top & side locks and can only be opened with a personal code. The 180 cm anti-theft cable is made of liquid crystal polymer, which is remarkably strong and yet allowed in aircraft cabins, unlike steel. Finally, Henk provides 24/7 service covering sales, service and repairs to suit the exceptional value of its cases Henk products are available from select luxury retailers all over the world. Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc

The eternal home of Old World glamour. Nestled near the Cap d’Antibes on the stunning Côte d’Azur, the marvellous Hôtel du Cap is far enough from the crowds of Cannes and Saint-Tropez to be a peaceful oasis, close enough to be a handy base, and luxurious enough to have been a favourite haunt of the world’s glitterati for more than a century. Few places can boast quite such a list of patrons over the years. And as a $67 million renovation in 2011 underlines, the venerable institution is keeping up with the times.

T

he main building of the Hôtel du Cap was built in 1869 by the founder of Le Figaro newspaper for writers seeking inspiration, and was converted to a luxury hotel in 1887. It comprises 117 suites and two villas, each totally different from the next, as well as two world-class restaurants with a spectacular view

of the surrounding coast. One of the restaurants is open to the public, and the hotel has its own jetty, making it easy to access for the impressive yachts anchored off the coast. Another highlight is the heated saltwater infinity swimming pool cut from the cliff edge in 1914. The hotel’s claim to immortal fame dates to the 1920s, when Gerald and Sara Murphy, a young American couple of art patrons living in France, rented the hotel for an entire summer. They were among the first to ever do so – the Riviera had until then been seen as a winter destination (nowadays the hotel is not even open in winter). They brought several famous writers and artists of America’s Lost Generation, including Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald, who would go on to use the hotel as the model for the Hôtel des Étrangers in Tender Is the Night. The Kennedys spent a summer here

in 1938 when JFK was 21 years old – this is where Marlene Dietrich started her affair with Joe Senior. And it was at the swimming pool that Rita Hayworth met with Prince Aly Khan after she had stood up the Shah of Iran for a lunch date. Other guests have included Marlene Dietrich, Orson Welles, Winston Churchill, Charles de Gaulle and Ernest Hemingway. The Duke and Duchess of Windsor and Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton honeymooned there, Picasso drew the restaurant’s menu in 1955 and Marc Chagall made sketches in one of the beachside cabanas after they were built in the 1960s. More recently, the hotel has hosted the likes of Madonna, Nicole Kidman, Jessica Chastain, George Clooney, Johnny Depp and Matt Damon. Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc has pointedly maintained an air of conservative class over the years – it did not accept payments by credit card until 2006, and there were no hightech devices in the rooms, like TV screens, until the renovation in 2011. Now boasting the latest mod cons, the hotel still sets fire to the imagination, as innumerable artists and movie stars continue to grace its halls today. 

VANQUISH YACHTS / VQ58

A

t the heart of the VQ58 concept is a flexible boat that combines the best of the best when it comes to speed, comfort and layout. In developing the hardtop VQ58 for the launch client, we decided to design a hull that would be equally suited for an open-top or T-top model in the future. There are also different options in terms of the engines and drives, while the interior has lots of leeway for customisation because a side garage frees up space that the garage would otherwise occupy aft. It has also entailed designing the boat with a little extra height: the design lessons learned in the development of the super-sleek VQ65 have borne further fruit here with this project. FUN AND GAMES The VQ58 is superbly suited to longer trips thanks to its hardtop but still has a very open feel, one which is further increased by the enormous sunroof that opens and closes automatically. The design was created specifically for an owner who wished to have an aft section that resembled the VQ50, including the garage bay for a Williams tender on the starboard side. The tender in particular is very handy for wakeboarding within safe reach of the mothership or conveniently getting to a quayside bistro or quiet cove. The VQ58 also has lots of storage space for diving equipment or water toys. The forward section of the boat is based on the successful VQ54. Overall the open deck spaces of the VQ58 offer luxurious seats and sunbeds to at least 23 people. They will have access to refrigerators, wine coolers, icemakers and various dining options, as well as a range of bimini systems for different levels of shade. BEAUTIFUL IN BLUE The first VQ58 will be fitted with the 1200 hp MAN engines and surfacepiercing propellers, ensuring a pretty serious turn of speed. Its double spray rail will keep the occupants dry even at very high speeds, while the hull ensures incomparable cruising comfort. The exterior of the launch model for the VQ58 range will be painted in a gorgeous dark blue colour and embody the Vanquish philosophy of flexibility, stylishness, extravagance and power on the water. 

aving celebrated its 60th birthday in 2017, De Valk is one of Europe’s longest established yacht brokers. The company is the largest brokerage firm in its home country of the Netherlands where it has its own marinas. It also has a network of offices across the Mediterranean region, with branches in various key locations in Spain, France and Portugal. The office in Antibes has decades of experience behind it as well as the best possible location at the entrance of Port Vauban. It has also enjoyed a comprehensive renovation this year and, as the images show, is an impressive meeting place for the boating community. ENORMOUS POTENTIAL “Although De Valk Antibes primarily works in the market for superyachts above 24 metres, we are very impressed with the Vanquish brand and the potential it offers De Valk clients in this part of the world,” says the office’s director Constantin Capsis. “Vanquish is a superb example of a premium Dutch-quality product which perfectly fits our segment of the market in and around the Med. Its boats are ideal for the owners of fine homes along the coast who love to drive themselves out on the water.” Constantin says that the market is very competitive within the size range of Vanquish boats but says they can more than hold their own. “Vanquish is at the high

end in terms of quality and luxury. The figures for sales of similar boats make impressive reading. To give an idea, other brands have sold over 100 vessels in this category over the past six years. “Vanquish offers even higher levels of quality and – crucially for potential buyers in this part of the world – the fact that the boats are made in aluminium offers the kind of customisation opportunities that they demand. We’re not just talking about having a different colour or cool looking cushions – a Vanquish can be a metre longer, have a different layout… Clients can genuinely create a boat that accommodates their specific wishes. What’s more, there is an impressive choice of sizes, ranging from a fabulous 16-foot waterscooter right up to a 90-foot superyacht. I genuinely believe that the Vanquish brand has an exceptionally bright future.” GENUINE PARTNERSHIP Constantin also adds that Vanquish is a family company and, as such, is an excellent match for the culture at De Valk. “We are forming a genuine partnership here so that people recognise that the De Valk office in Antibes is also the Vanquish office in Antibes. As well as sales, De Valk covers all aspects of yachting, including management, maintenance and chartering – and we will now be pleased to do the same for Vanquish owners.” 

THE NEW VQ65.

VANQUISH YACHTS / VQ65

Vanquish Yachts has worked closely with the renowned Dutch designer Guido de Groot for three years now. This extraordinary partnership has helped give Vanquish boats a distinctive look & feel which matches and accentuates the power, comfort and performance which first brought the brand to the attention of our clients. The latest new innovations include the awesome VQ65, which is capable of an astonishing 70 knots of speed and a great deal more besides. We asked Guido to describe how this unique new project came to pass and to explain the ongoing evolution of the Vanquish fleet.

VANQUISH

| 65.

SPECS. Lenght overall: 19.75 m / 65.5 ft Beam max: 5.15 m / 16.9 ft Draught: 1.45 m / 4.75 ft Displacement: 32.5 tonnes Fuel: 3000 L / 785 US gal Engine: 3 x 1900 hp MAN V12 Max speed: 70 knots

T

he initial brief for the VQ65 was based on a straightforward request by a client: Can you design and build me the fastest 65-foot yacht in the world while keeping the archetypal Vanquish look? This was our deceptively simple brief, and we chose a spine-tingling maximum speed of 70 knots as our starting point. Even for Vanquish, this would turn out to be no mean feat. SLEEK SOLUTIONS Speed and solidity are the very essence of Vanquish boats, but to reach such uncanny speeds and incorporate the engine layout required to do so the VQ65 also had to be uncommonly sleek. The solution we implemented was to place three engines in a unique V-shaped alignment within a specially designed, ultra-slender hull. It’s relatively easy to make something sleek if the interior is no object, but the VQ65 also had to meet the client’s desire to have his own cabin, a bathroom and a crew berth. This meant we had to leave enough beam and height forward of the engine room to accommodate these spaces. Moreover, as the boat is intended to sail with at least 20 people onboard, we had to allow room for some nice seating areas on the decks where they can socialise. These guests must also be safe when the boat is roaring along at full speed. We therefore opted for high bulwarks which offer excellent protection against the elements, and a hardtop canopy, so that people are relatively enclosed on the wheelhouse side but open from the aft. Good visibility has been assured, too, so that everyone would have a splendid panoramic view all around while enjoying the VQ65’s unprecedented power and velocity.

VANQUISH

SPECTACULAR LOOKS Another very important factor for the owner of this first VQ65 was her looks. He came to Vanquish because he likes the spectacular aesthetic which is one of the brand’s hallmarks. But he also then asked us to push the envelope further and use dark grey, almost black, hues combined with vivid red cushions. She may be incredibly fast but you will certainly see this beauty coming. Creating this distinctive design involved playing a lot with the air intakes on the sides. We also spent a lot of time designing a new wheelhouse in order to ensure that the VQ65 has sufficient standing height, and we added fins to the sides to make her look wider. While the Vanquish look is unmistakeable, its signature hull lines are also continuously evolving and improving. As new details are brought into new designs, like the VQ65, they are then often translated back into other models such as, most recently, the VQ58. There is also a constant evolution in our approach to changing requirements. This launch model for the VQ65 is a hardtop and we expect demand for this type of yacht to increase. Starting with a closed version enables us to more easily offer an open version or a T-top model later, should clients request that, without having to redesign the hull. GETTING THE HEIGHT RIGHT With both the VQ58 and VQ65, we have dedicated a great deal of time to getting the heights right so that they are magnificent-looking hardtop boats yet have sufficient interior space for good sleeping accommodations. To be honest, I think a lot of our competitors have neglected to optimise their proportions on closed designs, resulting

| 66.

in boats with excessive heights. We can offer spectacular, well-proportioned yachts in hardtop versions that still look every inch like a real Vanquish. Why is this so important? Because one of the key success factors for Vanquish – and one of the things that clients love – is that their boats are so iconic. When I show people a picture they immediately say: ‘hey, that’s a Vanquish’. This is exactly the effect we’re looking to create, of course, and one of the main reasons why I am so committed to continuing with the other models. The reverse bow is not in itself unique, but the way we have incorporated strong feature lines on a simple surface is very characteristic for Vanquish. And the fact that the bulwark is high enough to dispense with railings also makes the boats appear elegant and minimalistic. The archetypal Vanquish look is strong and, at the same time, swift and sleek. COLOURFUL LIVES In addition to being elegantly robust (or should that be robustly elegant?), Vanquish boats actually look like you will have a lot of fun onboard because of all the seating areas fore and aft. There is something about the shape that attracts people – and it also makes it easier to use different colours for the exterior. A Vanquish looks just as good in a white livery as it does in black, and for that matter every part of the colour spectrum in-between. Few if any other boats are so ripe for customisation in this respect. Overall, I am very pleased with how this partnership is going and the way we never stop developing new boats and seeking out fresh ideas. The clients play their role too – like the owner of this new VQ65… Which is why I am so looking forward to seeing her in action! 

We have therefore signed a contract to create new cushions which would do justice to the overall Vanquish design language and make a harmonious whole with the product design of all Vanquish boats. The design brief also called for cushions that invite guests to sit or lie down, with rounded shapes that are pleasing to the eye of as many passengers as possible – knowing that Vanquish boats often welcome more than 15 at a time.

Working together with experts, we came up with several new 3D designs. Each of the candidates focused especially on sitting and lying comfort, but the designers were also invited to come up with distinctive forms and concepts. The eventual result was an innovative design language that has ensured each new Vanquish boat will feature cushions which perfectly match the Vanquish style. This recently delivered VQ45 SAL is currently blazing a trail in Ibiza for the unique new look. 

VANQUISH YACHTS / NEW YORK

Sag Harbor, New York:

An ideal location for Vanquish Q

uaint and timeless, the tiny village of Sag Harbor captures the essence of the New England region of the United States. Full of history and character, the small town has a rich maritime past and remains a great place for nautical activities today. Centrally located, Sag Harbor is the jumping-off point for many yacht charters and is also home to a new Vanquish Yachts dealership, run by Boomer Jousma. Head over to 50 West Water Street and Boomer will be pleased to share the latest news from Vanquish and explore how we might be of service. HERITAGE Once a bustling whaler’s port and former writers’ colony, Sag Harbor takes great pride in its heritage, boasting

cultural activities, preserved historic homes and gourmet restaurants at every turn. Take a guided tour of the Marine Park with its WWII Memorial or visit the Sag Harbor Whaling and Historical Museum to learn more about Sag Harbor’s history as the first commercial port in the United States. Stroll down Main Street with its shops, artisan boutiques and hidden inns, or sip rosé at any of the charming restaurants and bars that line the pristine beaches and lend a St. Tropez feel. Indoor entertainment is also available with regular comedy shows, musicals and special performances at Bay Street Theater, a playhouse which rivals Broadway in its productions. boomer@yacht.blue 

TIME TO CHARTER AND FEEL THE POWER. If you don’t own a Vanquish – or have a friend who does – the best way to experience their power, style and comfort in person is to charter one. Our boats are available to rent on Ibiza and in St. Tropez and Miami, so why not treat yourself and your family & friends to a day they will never forget.

A

Vanquish is ideal for chartering as it offers plenty of space and can accommodate 15+ people on comfortable sofas and daybeds. Each has a shower and toilet on board, plus many features for cooling beverages and/or preparing snacks on deck. A top-notch sound system creates an exclusive sailing party venue with lots of space for dancing. When the sun is high, the bimini facilitates cool and relaxed al fresco lunches. With their high cruising speeds, Vanquish yachts can travel relatively long distances quickly, such as St. Tropez to Monaco in two hours and Ibiza to Formentera in only 20 minutes. Passengers can enjoy the many watersports facilities such as seabobs, wakeboards, skis and more, while the swim ladder gives easy access to the swimming platform. Our dedicated Vanquish Charter Service division will respond to all your requests, such as a chef on board to prepare the delicious food, a DJ including booth and an experienced captain to take you anywhere. We can also include an extra deck-hand for on-board service and a time-saving pick-up & drop-off option. Belmond La Residencia

Secluded luxury. Tucked between the blue Mediterranean and Mallorca’s spectacular Tramuntana mountains is Belmond La Residencia. Hide away at one of Spain’s most elegant, yet relaxed luxury hotels.

L

ocated in the small, timeless village of Deià, the secluded Belmond La Residencia contains two 16th and 17th-century manor houses hewn from local stone. The 35 rooms and 32 suites, plus one deluxe stand-alone villa, feature natural colours, crisp linens, and shuttered windows overlooking the lush gardens, which supply the hotel with fresh herbs, olive oil, fruit, and flowers. Some suites boast private pools and terraces.

VANQUISH

Explore the island’s gorgeous, remote countryside: cruise on a hotel bicycle, discover a hidden beach, or take a long mountain hike. Ask to tour local wineries, learn about Mallorcan art, or even take a sunset cruise. But with Belmond La Residencia’s beautiful 30 acres of gardens, plus two outdoor pools and deluxe spa, you may not want to step foot off the property. In the evening, enjoy sumptuous fine dining at El Olivo, a refurbished 16th-century olive press, or taste typical Mallorcan tapas at the renewed Café Mirò. 
