Read about Homecoming 2011 inside!

Jacob Donald Tjaden II, G’70, lost his battle with cancer June 30, 2011. Jake was a cowboy his whole life, working for the Great Plains Cattle Company for about 15 years. He later retired from the fuel co-op in Iuka, Kan.

“Big Jake” was a very good defensive tackle for the Falcons for three seasons. Looking at the 1968 media guide, Jake was listed at 6-foot-6 and 260 pounds. He had a handlebar mustache that stuck out of his facemask on each end, which made him very intimidating to his opponents. His baby brother, Rick Tjaden, G’72, was the other starting defensive tackle. Jake had two brothers and one sister. All the kids worked on the family farm near Clearwater, Kan., during their youth. Their father, Donald, passed away in 1952, leaving their mom, Mardelle, to raise the family. She worked at the Clearwater bank for many years and never remarried. Mrs. Tjaden made sure the kids had the basic necessities while growing up, but also made it clear that they would go to college. That college turned out to be Friends University. All four attended and three graduated. Their sister, Vick (Tjaden)

Waldschmidt, was a Friends student before getting married and leaving early to raise her family. The three brothers, Jake, Rick and Randy, G’74, all played football at Friends and graduated with their degrees. Rick went on to coach football for nine seasons at Friends. Randy went to the University of Oregon and received his Ph.D. The Tjaden family has three college degrees and many fond memories of their time at Friends University. Congratulations to Mrs. Tjaden for a job well done. Rest in peace, “Big Jake,” your Falcon teammates will miss you.

Fall 2011 • The (1970s)

Class updates I received an email from Mary Kay Whitaker, G’78. She just recently completed her doctorial studies in organization management and leadership from Capella University. She currently lives in San Tan Valley, Ariz., and works for Xcelogic. She hopes to rejoin the Friends family in the near future by teaching online. Congratulations Dr. Whitaker! Arden Sanders, G’74, is teaching Bible translation as part of the masters degree program at the Graduate Institute of Applied Linguistics (GIAL). GIAL’s role in Bible translation is to train language specialists who can correctly translate the scripture into foreign languages. Arden lives in Duncanville, Texas. Thanks to all of you who have responded with emails and letters. Please continue to let us know what you have been doing since you attended Friends in the 1970s. If you did not make this issue of Campus Connection, do not give up as I intend to include everyone who responds in future issues.

KEEPING TIME Once again, Wichita students at Friends University can tell the time by sound at the beginning of the hour and at each half hour. After more than two years of silence, the Davis Administration Building clock tower bell received a much-needed repair and began ringing again June 23, 2011. Funded by money set aside by the Student Government Association starting 2009, the repair included a digital device that bypasses the original gears, keeping the clock on time while preserving the historical components of the 80-year-old clock. As an additional bonus, the digital component adjusts automatically for daylight saving time and standard time. The project experienced a few setbacks, but fortunately, the clock tower repair cost around $8,000, which was less than the amount that SGA planned for in 2009.
