Campus Connection

1950s

From Your Class Agent Paul Boles patsyb@pld.com

To start out with, I thought I would tell you about a visit we had in November. It was pheasant hunting season and my old friend Beryl Cline, G’52, came and hunted on our place. What a nice time we had. Sara and James Pierce, both graduates of the class of 1951, celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary Aug. 28. They are retired teachers at Frostburg State University, Frostburg, Md., where they taught for 32 years. They now live in Fort Davis, Texas. Nelda (Pickett) Coleman, G’56, wrote in to say that no less than 12 of her family members attended Friends University. Now that is tradition! Florence (Peterson) Walter, G’56, retired after 37 years. She has moved to Weeping Water, Neb., to be near her daughter. Joe Boyd, G’54, and his wife Wilda live in Lebanon, Ind. Joe had a 40-year career as a teacher and administrator in Kansas public schools, plus he was a minister. Joe celebrated his 80th birthday in June 2010. They have three children, seven grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren. Nadine (Peterson) Brotemarkle, G’56, passed away Sept. 30, 2010. She taught for 34 years in Derby, Kan. Benjamin, “Benny” Mevey, G’53, died Oct. 1, 2010. He was a 38-year veteran educator in the Wichita public school. His wife Earlene, G’54,

son Zane and daughter Vinene survive. He had four grandchildren and two great-grandchilden. He served 10 years on the Friends University board of trustees. Maxine (Harris) Brooks, G’50, died Dec. 1, 2010. She was a home economics teacher and the sister of Kenton “Mutt” Harris, G’55, of Friendswood, Texas. Raymond D. Wamsley, G’53, passed away Oct. 24, 2010, in Springfield, Mo. Bud (as we knew him) was from Conway Springs, Kan., and was an outstanding football player. He was a lifetime educator and had earned a doctorate in education. Dean Conant, G’54, passed away Sept. 7, 2010. He sold real estate for many years. He and his wife of 57 years, Shirley, have two sons and two daughters. Glenda Rae Allen, FS’56, died Sept. 1, 2010 in Trenton, Mich. She was an English major and had an amazing gift for words. She hosted “The June Day Show” at KWBB in Wichita. Bill P. Stanhope, FS’50, of Colwich, Kan. died Aug. 29, 2010. He retired from STAR Manufacturing in 1989. He is survived by nine children, 22 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Search Underway for 13th University President

December Seniors Honored at Special Luncheon

As you may have heard, Dr. Biff Green, president of Friends University, will be retiring June 30, 2011. The Board of Trustees has launched a national search for the 13th president of Friends University which is expected to conclude by March 1, 2011. To find out more about the presidential search, please visit www.friends.edu/presidential-search.

With the help of the Wichita Alumni Advisory Board, the Friends University Alumni Association honored those traditionalundergraduate seniors who graduated in December with a special luncheon Dec. 8.

Friends University Offers Hometown Advantage Grant Do you know a high-school senior from Sedgwick County, Andover, Augusta or Rose Hill who is exploring college options? Friends University is offering students from these areas a $5,000 grant toward tuition at Friends University starting in fall 2011. The $5,000 grant is renewable, is available in addition to other scholarships and does not need to be paid back. It is designed to make it more affordable for new students who demonstrate financial need to get an independent college education.

Members of the Wichita Alumni Advisory Board, University President Dr. Biff Green and his wife, Binnie, and Board of Trustees Chairman Rodney Pitts, G’82, served a tasty Mexican buffet of steak and chicken fajitas, Spanish rice, refried beans, cinnamon chips and all the fixins! Students received words of encouragement from Dr. Green, Mr. Pitts and Wichita Alumni Advisory Board members Marvin Connet, G’82/’84, and Lisa Kraemer, G’10. As they prepared to enter the world as representatives of Friends University, the seniors were urged to remember the time they spent with their classmates and friends. Congratulations once again to this group of graduating seniors!

From the Executive Director of Alumni and Annual Fund You may recall that the Alumni Office has been working with the State of Kansas to create a Friends University license plate. On Jan. 4, 2011, the director of vehicles informed us that while they have all the necessary documents to move forward, they would need additional monies from the state budget to produce the plates. At the time of the printing of this newsletter, the director of vehicles stated that they would be meeting with the secretary of revenue in mid-January to work on adding our plate costs to their agency budget.

The Alumni Office anticipates re-grouping with the director of vehicles in mid-February to determine where funding is with our plate request. More information will be posted online at www. friends.edu/kansas-license-plates.
