“The really frightening thing about middle age is that you know you’ll grow out of it.” –Doris Day Winter greetings to everyone,

The art of Karyl Barbosa (above) will be on display at Riney Fine Arts Center Gallery March 18 to April 21.

Yes, we have outgrown the time in our lives when we were considered “middle age.” However, since we all are living longer and feeling better, maybe the middle age has moved into the spread from 60 - 70 especially since 60 is the new 50. Where am I going with this? Nowhere, it’s just food for thought. Are you feeling better to know that you are still a middle-ager? Did you know: On Dec. 13, 2010, the students, faculty and staff of Friends University worked tirelessly at a warehouse near the campus to sort, wrap, assemble, and decorate for the Salvation Army’s distribution day to the needy of Wichita and the surrounding area. What a task they took on, and have been doing for 18 years. The Wichita Alumni Advisory Board was invited to help this year and I came away so impressed with the work everybody was doing. The women’s basketball team was busy decorating Christmas trees (as pictured to the right), the men’s basketball team was unloading trucks, assembling bikes with President Biff Green and carrying heavy loads to the proper place. The Salvation Army, via their Angel Trees, provide requested gifts for the needy of Wichita, which includes children and adults. All of the items handled that day were donated by the citizens of Wichita. In 2009, the Salvation Army assisted approximately 8,500 people. This year, they served more than 11,000. Back on campus,

another group was baking cookies and preparing snacks to be available at the warehouse when the people came to pick up the gifts. Friends University has been an integral part of this program for many years and we were asking: “If it weren’t for Friends, who would take on such a task?” It was a wonderful experience to watch and work with everybody. Coming in March, there will be a reception and art show for one of our classmates, Karyl Barbosa, G’69, at the Riney Fine Arts Center Gallery. The dates for Karyl’s show are March 18 through April 21 with a Final Friday Reception being held March 25, at which Karyl will be present. Our lives can be hectic and time slips away so stay in touch with those you love and us.

Sherrie (Lindstrom) Andersen, G’68
