Lightning bugs flitting, cicadas chirping, mosquitoes buzzing, chiggers, outdoor concerts, baseball games with the grandkids, ice cold lemonade, fresh tomatoes, barbeque hamburgers and hot dogs, zucchini from the garden, to name a few.
Ah, summer in Kansas and the living is easy. Well, most of the time. New aches and pains continue to hit us and you never know for sure that when you bend over you can straighten back up. Aging is certainly not for sissies - but it sure beats the alternative. Activities are picking up on campus at Friends University. New professors, new deans, new students, President Arant’s second year, Homecoming around the corner, etc. Also, two buildings in the Delano Historic District will be the new home for the Art Department with anticipated occupancy by the 2013 fall semester. There will be plenty of room for an on-site gallery, offices and lecture hall. Won’t they be thrilled to have their own building? The second annual President’s Run will be held on the campus and surrounding area on Saturday, April 6, 2013. Now I realize that is still some time from now, but this is your first notice. This past spring’s President’s
Inaugural Run was a great hit. The runners loved the course around the Friends campus and on University Avenue and there were many mascots from surrounding area businesses cheering everyone along - even the walkers - which might include a number of us 60s grads next year who have left running behind. Whew!! Homecoming is coming again and it will be the 50th reunion for the class of 1962. WOW! Mark your calendars for Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012. More information will be coming in your mail. Hey, I’ll be there and I graduated in 1968. It’s a fun place to be on a Saturday in October. Here are some great updates from y’all: •
Carolyn Gilmore, FS‘59-‘60, writes that she has just published a new book titled “Nourishing Your Newborn.” As an obstetric nurse, she helped many new Moms learn the art of breastfeeding.
•
Jerry Watters, G‘69, sends information that he is the minister of music and education at First Baptist Church in Neches, Texas.

President’s Inauguration brings Friends community together Friends University celebrated the inauguration of its 13th president, Dr. T.J. Arant, March 30, 2012. The ceremony took place at 2 p.m. in Garvey Gymnasium in the Garvey Physical Education Center. Approximately 600 students, alumni, parents, friends and members from the local community were in attendance, along with nearly 50 delegates from visiting colleges who showed their support. Rodney Pitts, G’82, chair of Friends University Board of Trustees, presided over the installation of the president, followed by Dr. Arant’s inaugural address. Music was provided by the Friends University student brass quintet, the University Concert Band and the Singing Quakers. A cocktail-style reception in McKay Gymnasium at the Casado Campus Center followed the ceremony, with music provided by the Friends University jazz ensemble and string ensemble.
