Happy New Year from your class agent! I trust this letter finds you in great spirits as we welcome the blessings of a New Year. December brought the annual lighting of the Davis Administration Building clock tower and the Candlelight Concert (which replaced the Bach Oratorio). Those two events are now part of our family tradition as we prepare for the Advent season. There is something about spending time on campus which reminds us of the many friends and fond memories of our time as students. To then see those same memories being made by current students and shared by a new University president, there was an air of excitement!
As you can see by the second issue of the new format, you all voted and said, “WE LOVE THE NEW FORMAT!” Of course with that new change come new responsibilities. Updates! See all of this space? If you don’t send in updates, you’ll have to suffer through my writing! Speaking of updates, I am happy to share the following classmates’ news. •
Diane Ferrell, G’81, writes that she and her husband, Dennis, have become firsttime grandparents. They also own and operate ESI Insurance in Cherokee with their son-in-law, Josh Bellamy.
•
Rick Hayes, G’80, oversees sales in the Pacific northwest for New York Life Insurance Company. In addition, he has coached football for 25 years. He, his wife, Louanne, and their two sons make their home in Salem, Ore.
•
Kipp Clark, G’88, has recently been named the boy’s head basketball coach at Horizon High School in Scottsdale, Ariz., where he and his wife, Jill, live with their three children.
•
Finally, it is with much sadness that I report the passing of Edward Schmotzer, G’82. After a ten-year battle with leukemia, Ed passed away June 1, 2010. Our condolences to Ed’s family.
Other highlights since the last newsletter include noting that the Friends University Cross Country teams won the KCAC conference championship for the first time in University history. This ended a 31-year run of Southwestern College’s winning streak. And the State of Kansas is anticipating the release of the Friends license plate in spring 2012. The most recent news can be found at www.friends.edu/kansas-license-plates.
