Jayneen Hammons, M’00 MSQM/MTQM Class Agent jayneen@gmail.com You are invited to the inauguration of President Dr. T.J. Arant.
One of the great things about this class newsletter is that it gives us an opportunity to network as professionals, reconnect as former classmates, celebrate each other’s successes and even offer words of encouragement or prayer for those who may need it. The world is not so big of a place as it once was, and our paths cross more often than we probably know. With that said, I encourage you to let me know what you have been doing since you earned your graduate degree. I would love to be able to share your news with all our fellow MSQSM/MTQM alumni. You are always welcome to send me an email or you can even fill out the form on the top of page 2 and send it to the Alumni Office. They will make sure I receive your news. Exciting things are happening at Friends University this spring! For those of you who reside in the Wichita area, mark your calendars for the 14th Annual Chili Cookoff. This year’s event takes place from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012. It’s a fun time to come back to campus, enjoy some free food and vote for your favorite chili and booth theme. Be sure to stick around for the basketball games later that same night.
Speaking of Falcon athletics, for a list of upcoming games and locations (both on campus and abroad), please feel free to visit www.friendsathletics.com. If you live in the northeast part of Kansas, be sure to check out the 13th annual Easter Egg Hunt in Topeka on March 31, 2012, or the Alumni Day at the T-Bones Baseball Game in Kansas City (date to be announced later this spring). And no matter where you live in Kansas, if you’d like information about obtaining a Friends University license plate, visit www.friends.edu/kansas-license-plates. Best wishes for a blessed new year and I look forward to hearing from you in 2012!

Spring 2012 • (MSQM/MTQM)
Alumni Spotlight In this issue of the Campus Connection class newsletter, we are pleased to spotlight Master of Science in Family Therapy (MSFT) alumna Kim Norwood, M’98.
CAMPUS (CONNECTION)
Kim opened Stepping Stones Counseling Center in July 2011. She has provided individual, couples and family therapy to more than 30 families in the Hutchinson area since then, and has had the opportunity to reach out to the disabled community. Kim’s experience and education have led her to this point. Early on, she worked as a court probation officer, but soon grew disillusioned with holding people accountable but not providing the help they needed to change. After taking a break in 1985 to raise her children, she was inspired by her pastor to learn about family therapy. “When I found out about the Friends program, I thought that would be a perfect fit,” Kim said. She said the coursework gave her a broad exposure to the skills she would need later on. After graduating, she worked 13 years for St. Francis Community Services. Then legislature passed that allowed Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas to recognize and reimburse Marriage and Family Therapists through major insurance companies starting October 2010. Kim and her husband Randy, a district level administrator in Hutchinson schools, have three grown children and a two-year-old granddaughter. Kim enjoys being able to set her own deadlines so that she can spend time with her family, while also fulfilling her passion of helping people in need. “I’m loving it,” Kim said.
25 YEARS of GRADUATE EDUCATION Since 1986, Friends University has offered graduate education for professionals ready to take their careers to the next level. Friends University’s graduate offerings have grown from two programs and 41 students to 12 programs and more than 700 students. Currently, graduate students account for more than one-third of enrollment. Looking to the future, “the Graduate school’s next big step is to begin considering doctoral degree programs, as well as adding additional master’s degrees,” said Dr. Evelyn Hume, dean of the Graduate School. As Friends University’s new president, Dr. T.J. Arant’s engaging nature and passion for excellence make him an ideal fit to take the University to the next level.
While the role of teacher is among the most fulfilling for Dr. Arant, he describes his family as his great joy: his two grown daughters and his wife, Susan, a fundraiser and former director of alumni affairs at a small, private college.
In this issue of the Campus Connection class newsletter, we are pleased to spotlight Friends University graduate faculty member Dr. Chris Kettler, G’77, and his book titled, “The God who Rejoices: Joy, Despair and the Vicarious Humanity of Christ.” In this book, Dr. Kettler explores the implications of Christ’s humanity, investigating the paradigms of joy and despair in his experience and ours. Drawing on wide-ranging resources from Augustine and John Calvin to Bob Dylan, Kettler seeks to bring the meaning of incarnational theology to us by explaining how similar our Christ is to his Christians: filled with real despair and with real joy.
About Dr. Arant
Dr. Arant hails from the east with a doctorate in English from Duke University; a master’s in English from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; and a bachelor’s from Vanderbilt University.
